During a hearing Tuesday on an aid bill for sick New Yorkers, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) callously dismissed the 9/11 attacks as “simply” a plane crash. The New York Daily News reports:
The California congressman who called the Sept. 11 attacks “simply” a plane crash ran for cover Wednesday under a barrage of ridicule from fellow Republicans, first responders and victims’ families.
San Diego GOP Rep. Darrell Issa was under siege for suggesting the federal government had already done enough to help New York cope with “a fire” that “simply was an aircraft” hitting the World Trade Center.
Rep. Peter King (R-NY) sharply criticized his fellow conservative’s remarks, stating, “New York was attacked by Al Qaeda. It doesn’t have to be attacked by Congress.” In his statement yesterday, Issa tried to insist that he only “asked tough questions about the expenditures” during the hearing.
Issa knows “simple”, that’s for sure.
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:42 pmJust one question.
Was Issa wearing his flag pin in lapel
SNARK!
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:43 pmThat’s hilarious. Next we’ll learn that Katrina was simply a rain storm. Even if a plane had struck the World Trade Center on accident it wouldn’t forgive the shameful efforts by the EPA and others to cover up the significant health risks to area resident, survivors, and first responders.
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:46 pmI posted this on the ThinkFast thread half-and-hour ago. Thank you for passing it along, ThinkProgress.
Disgusting, idiotic comments by Issa.
Good for Rep. King.
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:47 pmYou, sir, just emboldened the terrorists. And I’m not kidding.
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:47 pmThen why the need for trashing the Constitution and having a “Patriot Act”? Issa?
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:47 pmDarrell Issa Idiot.
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:51 pm9-11 was an inside job…. only the tin-foil crowd believes the “bush” version…

Thanks for posting this Ex…Issa is in my neighborhood (San Diego) so I know lots about him. How is it that all the ‘warmongers’ seem to minimize the events which caused them to become warmongers? 9/11 was ‘just a fire’? Katrina was ‘just a rainstorm’? Heartless thugs, is all they are.

My thoughts exactly. If it was just a simple plane crash then why the need to usurp the Constitution, international laws and institute other laws that infringe upon Americans freedoms and liberties WHILE offending the world by insisting that America Reign supreme in other Nations as the occupier of all occupiers?
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:54 pmCan TP strike Moondat’s hideous “joke?”
Not only is it horribly inappropriate, it derogates the memory of the heroes of United Flight 93, who successfully fought to prevent just such a tragedy.

In Iraq 1993, it was just Depleted Uranium.

PEACE
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:00 pm#StratRat,
I think Rep. Fossella from Staten Island has it right about Issa’s moronic comments:
“It seems that with the passage of time, something happened along the way where the scope of the problem and the real extent of the problem has not drifted out to California,” fumed Staten Island GOP Rep. Vito Fossella.
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:01 pmI never saw a plane crash into the Pentagon. Have you?
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:02 pmIssa makes Reps. Dana Rohrbacher and Jack Kingston look like Mensa material.
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:03 pmI agree….flagged. TP should ban this one by IP. He is using TP as propaganda machine….

April 3rd, 2008 at 2:06 pmMr.Issa does have some criminal charges in his past that would lead one to believe he is of the thuggery mind-set.
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 pmthe only reason this is still in question is because the bush administration keeps it from being known…..if they don’t have anything to hide then why is it a secret?
You can see why people question what really happened when the answer from bush is “trust us”. That has been proven to be a fatal path for any fool to follow.

April 3rd, 2008 at 2:09 pmIssa’s past criminal charges include threatening business partner with gun and profiting from burning his own business. He made his fortune in car alarms. He’s partially responsible for giving us Gov. Ahnulld.

April 3rd, 2008 at 2:10 pmThanks a lot, StratRat. :)
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:10 pmNo, 9/11 wasn’t *just* a plane crash, but it was a relatively insignificant criminal act (murder and destruction of private property). More Americans are killed by Americans every year than Al-Q killed on 9/11. More people die of treatable illnesses that could be prevented with universal healthcare. The list goes on people. Oh, and the majority of these needless deaths could be prevented with a fraction of the money that has been squandered by this war.
The difference? 9/11 was spectacular to watch. Thousands of insurance-less people succumbing to illness over the course of a year just doesn’t make for good TV. 9/11 was only significant because people like GWB want you to think its significant so they can push their greedy agendas.

April 3rd, 2008 at 2:12 pmDon’t be too impressed with Peter King, folks, just because he criticized Issa.
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:13 pmI think what Issa meant to say is that it was only *apparently* a plane crash.

April 3rd, 2008 at 2:17 pmDoes the Rep in front of his name stand for REPREHENSIBLE???
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:17 pmThe results of the exposure to multiple toxins on those who cleaned up the mess caused by the exploding towers are heartbreaking. Read their stories. Many hundreds of people were contaminated, inside and out, by the flour-fine dust made of powdered concrete, glass, fiberglass, computers, office furnishings, bodies, and laced with who knows what else (since the REAL cause for that disintegration has yet to be satisfactorily explained).
This was no “simple plane crash.” There was never an FAA investigation, no reconstruction, as there would have been in a “simple plane crash.” This was no ordinary “fire” that needed to be coped with. There was never a forensic investigation of the debris.
Rep. Issa, you are truly out of touch with what happened that day and in the days, months and years following, aren’t you?
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:19 pmIssa in so much trouble for speaking before engaging my brain.

Once upon a time, it was a “fringe” group that believed that our own government had something to do with 911. Last poll I saw (don’t know the exact date on it), 36% of the American people believed that the U.S. government (specifically the present administration) were either directly responsible or were complicit.
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:41 pmI’m 30 miles south of Atascadero.

April 3rd, 2008 at 2:54 pmApril 3rd, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Irresponsibility: No single raindrop believes it is to blame for the flood.
April 3rd, 2008 at 2:59 pmAny Congressman who even gives the appearance of tossing off 9/11 as a trivial event is committing political suicide. If Issa’s objective was to argue against giving New York any more federal money to deal with the illnesses of the 9/11 rescue and clean-up workers, he certainly could have found a less inflammatory way to express that.
That said, I wonder if Issa could explain that if 9/11 was “just a plane crash” why he has always supported and continues to support the “War on Terror?” He really can’t have this both ways.
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:00 pmThat’s OK Keith. It gave me the opportunity to bring up the insanity of Karl Rove.

April 3rd, 2008 at 3:14 pmI expect this’ll make Keith’s Worsts tonight. Good grief.
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:19 pm#68 OMG! Right down the street from Bob’s Big Boy!
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:24 pmWell, ignoring the schmuck is done at one’s own peril. He needs to be put down, politically, like a rabid dog.
The only good thing about Arnie running for Governor was watching Issa weep like a baby that he didn’t get to win his little coup. Prick.
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:25 pmKeith, that would put you in the tri-cities, let me guess…
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:27 pmPismo or Grover City??
There was an E4-B plane flying over Washington on 9/11 prior to the Pentagon “alledged” attack. I would like an explanation for what this military operation plane flying on that day. I also would like to see the footage of a 757 hitting the Pantagon. Afetr they do that, they can try to explain how two plane hit two towers, but three twoers came down, having TOTAL COLLAPSE in less than 10 seconds each!!!! Physics do not lie. Bush and Chenney do, and do it constanly!
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:29 pmApril 3rd, 2008 at 3:31 pm
HE SAID WHAT????
Where the hell were you, Rep. Issa, on 9/11? Sure, a plane crashed into the WTC – THAT WAS HIJACKED AND INTENTIONALLY FLOWN INTO THE BUILDINGS!!!
If it were “just a plane crash”, then why have our lives been turned upside down over it? Why do we have “no fly” lists? Why do we have a “Department of Homeland Security”? Why do I have to take of my freaking shoes in order to get onto a plane?
I am all for asking the tough questions; I just object to STUPID ones.
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:34 pmAnother seat for the Democrats to challenge.
Will Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) survive re-election?

April 3rd, 2008 at 3:45 pmIsn’t Issa’s district near where that simple Boy Scout campfire got a bit out of hand last year?
(Before anyone gets upset, I’m just being snarky.)
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:01 pmIssa is mentally gone.
Memo to Issa: 9/11 was a inside job. Go look at the asset portfolios of George and Dick.
April 3rd, 2008 at 5:13 pmI keep waiting for the conservative compassion that bush campaigned on as the new party mantle. But a fish rots from the head down. Sure wish someone would take this fish out to the trash.
April 3rd, 2008 at 5:42 pmSouthernman, do some research on other steel buildings and how long it takes to burn without EVER disintegrating. Do I think it was an inside job, no. However, Ashcroft for one stopped riding on commercial jets two months before. I think bush and cheney knew alot more than we will ever find out. They needed something to take the heat off the phoney election that journalists were looking into. They wanted a war with Iraq to control oil. As in any crime see who benefitted. Condi and the rest ignored Richard Clarke instead of listening. That alone was a travesty to Americans that died.
April 3rd, 2008 at 6:10 pmAmazes me that there are still people so stupid that they think 9-11 was bad for Bush.. best thing that ever happened to him..nice big made for hollywood boom and everything…all it takes is 19 boxcutters to shred the constitution apparently
April 3rd, 2008 at 7:42 pm>Disgusting, idiotic comments by Issa.
blink! blink! exlexlia bothered by something a republican did? shocking..
April 3rd, 2008 at 7:43 pmRUCerious, Arroyo Grande, it’s much nicer than Grover Beach (ha, ha). Were you asking if I was interned in the Atascadero State Hospital? :(
April 3rd, 2008 at 7:50 pm9/11 gave Bush everything he wanted. Popularity shot from about 45% to 90% overnight and if anyone ever objected to his wishes, he could say “you’re either with us or you’re with the terrorists!” Got to say cool stuff like “wanted dead or alive” and “bring ‘em on!”.
I ain’t saying they did it, mind you—even if brother Marvin’s Saudi company was in charge of security for the WTC, United Air, and Reagan Airport.
Pakistani Intelligence probably did it.
April 3rd, 2008 at 7:56 pmKilo, it’s called “freedom of speech”. Look under Bill of Rights, inside Constitution.
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:19 pmDidn’t Issa cry _ I mean literally cry _ when he basically decided not to run for California governor after he masterminded Gray’s recall several years ago. I mean this guy cried because he knew he couldn’t win the governorship. The man is a freakin idiot and egomaniac. He has no business being in the human race.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:11 pmYeah kilo and southern….There is a lot of doubt and confusion surrounding 911 still. That could be easily addressed by this administration but they for some odd reason choose to not share what they know. Wonder why?
So I would say that at this point that just about any thought, theory or observation is just as valid as the next.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:45 pmIf you guys are tired of seeing this ass-clown in Congress, then check out the Democratic candidate challenging him in the CA-49th this November. Robert Hamilton has a multi-cultural, bi-lingual background, and also has a background in the military and business.
He will be a good Democrat to have on our side in Washington. I had the opportunity to meet him at the last gathering of Temecula’s Drinking Liberally and he seems like a really great guy.
Our district is definitely gerrymandered to be a safe one for Issa… although the challenger last year was kind of a kook (in my opinion) and got nearly 40% of the vote. Bob Hamilton is a much stronger candidate… he’s a good Democrat in republican-friendly dressing! He will definitely be able to run a competitive race by getting many republicans and independents to leave Issa.
Please learn more about Robert Hamilton and donate what you can to his campaign!!!
