Last night on his CNN Headline News show, right-wing pundit Glenn Beck hosted global warming skeptic Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK). Beck allowed Inhofe to rant about how — with “all the liberals” running the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works — he was forced to sit through hearings on “that nice white fuzzy polar bear.”
Inhofe argued that the polar bear population isn’t endangered. “[I]f anything, it’s an overpopulation problem,” said Inhofe. Beck then jumped in and claimed that, in fact, the extinction of polar bears may be a good thing:
They eat people! For the love of Pete, they’re big, angry bears. They eat people. Not that I say we go out and kill all of them, but I mean, it doesn’t seem to be a problem here. Senator, I can’t take the — I can’t take the lies anymore.
Watch it:
There is currently an estimated 20,000-25,000 polar bears worldwide who are threatened with “losing their habitat and becoming extinct over the next 50 years” because of global warming and melting sea ice. The U.S. Geological Survey predicts that without action, “11 of the 19 subpopulations will be extinct by the middle of this century, with an additional three subpopulations vanishing shortly thereafter.”
On Wednesday, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne skipped a Senate hearing on listing the polar bear as a threatened species. His agency missed a Jan. 9 deadline to decide on classifying the polar bear, in violation of the Endangered Species Act, according to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA).
Perhaps if little furry bunnies — which do not eat people — were endangered, Beck would want to save them.
Transcript:
BECK: But while pictures like this may say a thousand words, I only actually need actually 10 words to tell you the truth. The polar bear population is up over 300 percent since 1972.
So, why, may I ask, are we holding Senate committee hearings to question whether or not to add the animal to the endangered species list if they’re reproducing faster than human beings right now? Senator James Inhofe is the senator from Oklahoma, ranking Republican on that committee.
It’s a lonely, lonely place for you right now.
INHOFE: That committee is lonely. We’ve got Hillary and we’ve got all the liberals on that side and Barbara Boxer clearly controls the votes in there. So we had yesterday a hearing on that nice white fuzzy polar bear.
BECK: Now, Senator, this is a projection, a projection that someday they’ll start to go down in population. Today, the increase is 400 percent. Are we going to put them on the endangered species list?
INHOFE: Well, you know, they may go on. We can’t really control that right now. But the idea that they’d be trying to do it, I think you said it right except you’re a little bit conservative.
Since 1950, we have quadrupled the number of polar bears. The populations have gone up from the range of 5,000 to 10,000 to 20,000 to 25,000. So if anything, it’s an overpopulation problem.
But you know what they’re trying to do, Glenn. How many times have I been on your show on the global warming Al Gore stuff? What they want to do is do what they can’t do legislatively and cause the Fish and Wildlife Service to say, anywhere that you’re using — having emissions of carbon dioxide, you’re going to have to stop doing it because that’s going to make its way up to the polar cap and it’s going to kill all the bears.
I mean, you can be on my patio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with your outdoor cooker and have Fish and Wildlife say, well, you can’t do that because you might kill the polar bears. And polar bears are so pretty to look at.
BECK: They eat people! For the love of Pete, they’re big, angry bears. They eat people. Not that I say we go out and kill all of them, but I mean, it doesn’t seem to be a problem here. Senator, I can’t take the — I can’t take the lies anymore.
Why hasn’t this moron been canceled yet?
Why?
April 4th, 2008 at 1:39 pmGlennnn is the butt of Colbert’s success, and probably doesn’t even realize it.
What a picture-perfect moron posterboy for Rightyism.

April 4th, 2008 at 1:40 pmWhat a total f_ckwit.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:41 pmThey eat people? Really? If you jump into their cage at a zoo they attack you for invading their territory but they don’t EAT you. By that logic you can say that if somebody breaks into your house an you shoot them you’re eating them, I guess.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:43 pmColbert will have to run with this, given the bear hate, which may be what Beck was hoping for. Hey, free advertising!
What a tool.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:45 pmWhy is it total jerks get jobs on CNN?
April 4th, 2008 at 1:46 pmTrue Shayne, humans are not natural prey of polar bears. However, I’m so sure about sub-humans, so Beck had better be careful.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:47 pmPolar bears eat people? Really? If this is the case, seeing as how the number of people in the Arctic is rather small, why haven’t these bears migrated further south to where people are more plentiful? Don’t most species tend to go where the food supply is?
April 4th, 2008 at 1:47 pmCaption contest: I gotta go! I gotta go! I just made poopy!
April 4th, 2008 at 1:47 pmWhy does CNN promote idiots like Beck? And why interview a flat earther like Inoffe instead of the chair of the committee????? Boxer.

I’m sorry, misshusseinmolly, but you really can’t expect Beck to suss that out on his own. There’s too much thought involved there.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:49 pmOh, would that a polar bear would wander onto Ben Gleck’s set and have him for lunch.
Wishful thinking.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:50 pmBeck – “I can’t take the lies anymore.”
Then stop telling them.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pmAh, yes, nearly every morning headlines blare about another person eaten by polar bears. Beck truly is an idiot; why CNN keeps him on the air is a mystery.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:58 pmAnyone know what his ratings are right now?
I did a quick search on the Google (you know, with the tubes and all) and couldn’t find anything current.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:58 pmSo thats who Colbert is spoofing with his “Bear” skits.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:01 pmColbert is still funnier.
out of all the garbage that came spewing out of Beck’s or Ihofe’s trap, did anyone hear him dispel any “lies” that are being told?
If they want to discuss a point or even if you want to argue that the Polar Bear is not endangered, then argue that point and address the concerns of those of the opposing view. At least that is what you do if you are having an HONEST debate.
It is disgusting, but expected, that Glenn Beck uses this dishonest way of presenting his point (without counter point), but that kind of crap coming from a Senator is disgraceful, although it is also sadly expected.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:02 pmIf, as Becky says, polar bears should be allowed to die because they pose a threat to our safety; I can think of a few dozen Republicriminals who deserve the same consideration.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:04 pmWhen was the last time this idiot saw a polar bear eating a person? How many people does Beck think jump from icecap to icecap? That is if the icecap is still floating above the water. Is Glenn going to allow his children to experience the world outside his front yard?
April 4th, 2008 at 2:06 pmi’d pay good money to watch the likes of beck and inhofe transformed to polar bear shit.

Again, with a big nod to George Carlin, “it must be gooooooood shit!”
April 4th, 2008 at 2:09 pmI think that is the point. Hey this is the mentality that killed millions of bison for thier hides…..killed off the indian population because it hindered expansion….this is no big deal to these mental midgets.

April 4th, 2008 at 2:12 pmI just took the time to comment to CNN about Beck (again), I suggest that you all do the same.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:13 pmBeck is just jealous. Conservatives long for the day to literally eat people. Right now their options are limited to stripping them of their jobs, unemployment, and food stamps.
Conservatives not only want all animals dead, they won’t stop until they are the last one’s standing.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:13 pmJust saying beck’s name make’s me want to puke….What would he know about anything….Blessings
April 4th, 2008 at 2:14 pmThese propagandists miss the point about polar bears completely. The point is, if polar bears are dying off at such a high rate, and their habitat is being destroyed, it’s a clear sign that global warming is a major problem. It’s a symptom of an overall disease of global warming. The melting of the polar ice caps is accelerating. If it’s that bad at the poles, the rest of the planet will face major consequences in years to come.
The polar bears are like the canary in the mine. Their deaths are a warning sign for all of us.

April 4th, 2008 at 2:20 pmI ask myself why does CNN keep this idiot on the air? His ratings are abysmal, he constantly embarrasses himself with quotes like this, yet, CNN/HNN will not cancel him. He’s like their Tucker Carlson, in that Tucker’s shows were ratings bombs, but instead of firing Tucker outright (which they would do if a liberal talk show host had bad ratings), they just retitled his shows. It’s almost like CNN/HNN is saying to us “look, this guy is amazing. He’s one of the greatest broadcasters in the history of the world! You will watch him! We will force you to if we have to, you liberal commies!”. Well, the only ones that think Glenn Beck is amazing are the morons at CNN/HNN who give him airtime (and promote the crap out of him as well).
Bush probably likes this guy, too. I think Beck is actually dumber than Bush.

April 4th, 2008 at 2:44 pmSave the bears…Feed’em BECK!
April 4th, 2008 at 2:46 pmI hate to admit this, but Beck’s ridiculous ranting has become boring to me. There’s never any ‘there’ there. So I clicked on one of the links.
“Sen. Barbara Boxer held a hearing Wednesday…[b]ut her star witness, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, didn’t show.”
What are they going to have to do? Subpoena the SOB. Is he going to claim that state secrets would be severely threatened and therefore claim Executive Privilege? What a bunch of frigging incompetent ignorant obstructionist asshats. Gad.

Really?
When was the last human death by Polar Bear attack?
If it is such a dramatic problem, I’m sure there should be a plethora of examples to choose from… NO?
.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:54 pmI’m totally in favor of extinction – of Beck and Inhofe. This guy is up for reelection in 2008. Let’s hope to God someone (hopefully a Democrat) who is in touch with reality…and NOT funded by Big Oil….replaces this guy. As for Beck, CNN should can him. I csn’t imagine why they keep him…his ratings are in the sink.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:07 pmThese idiots are scared of EVERYTHING! … I wonder if Beck screams when he sees his own shadow.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:09 pmYou guys are expecting too much from Glenn. We are talking about the man who defended WALMART. And called all of us Terrorists and Blackmailers.
He is lower than pond scum….
Fish and Wildlife Service missed this deadline nearly three months ago despite the imminent dangers to polar bears, as demonstrated by unprecedented melting of Arctic ice in 2007.
The delay in the listing decision has raised suspicions that the Bush Administration was seeking to avoid scrutiny of oil and gas leases in polar bear habitat under the Endangered Species Act when it proceeded to sell oil and gas leases in the Chukchi Sea on February 6, 2008. The Chukchi Sea off of Alaska’s northern coast and historically frozen much of the year, is used by polar bears.
Bush is at it again. It would interfer with his oil and gas leases. Is nothing sacred….
April 4th, 2008 at 3:18 pmActually, polar bears (and black bears and grizzly bears too) have been known to eat humans. In the Arctic, where the polar bears live, you eat what you can find. If that happens to be a human, and you’re a hungry enough polar bear, you will kill and eat the human, if you don’t get killed by the human first.
Nonetheless, polar bears are incredibly beautiful animals, and it’s painful to think that someday they may be extinct or nearly so, thanks to human disregard for this planet.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:32 pmBeck has certainly overdosed on the booze on his comment.

April 4th, 2008 at 3:46 pmhere’s what Polar Bears eat:
April 4th, 2008 at 3:54 pm“What do polar bears eat?
The main part of the polar bears’ diet is ringed and bearded seals. Ringed seals, often the pups, are caught in the ice, either by smashing through the ice and grabbing newborns in the birth lair, grabbing them after waiting by their breathing hole, or by stalking the seals on the ice. Polar bears also prey on a wide variety of other marine mammals, depending on their availability, including walrus (pups), harp seals, hooded seals, white whales (belugas), narwhal, When on land they have been known to eat Svalbard reindeer, seabirds, geese, and eggs of eider ducks as well as scavenging on the occasional whale carcass. They have also been known to eat berries, grass, and dive for kelp.”
Sorry, no people. Facts have such a liberal bias.
Impeach Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution.

More re polar bears: did you know that Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, is the Polar Bear Capital of the World? Each spring and fall, the bears pass through and congregate in that area on their way to and from the Arctic pack ice (which is disappearing at an alarming rate). There are tourist expeditions to the area for people to watch the bears from the safety of tundra vehicles. People also watch the bears at the local dumps. They (the bears) sometimes become nuisances in the town, and the local human residents have to be careful about letting their kids play outside, or leaving their dogs tied up. Some bears get shot, others get removed to remoter places. Mostly the bears and the humans get along OK. Here is a link to a site about the Polar Bear Capital of the World:
And here’s a youtube video showing some of the bears playing:
There are lots of other polar bear videos there too, including bears playing with dogs, which is amazing.

April 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pmIt’s true that predation by polar bears on humans is rare, but it has happened. In Richard K. Nelson’s book “Hunters of the Northern Ice”, about the Inuit and their traditional hunting culture, the author says: “Nonwounded bears are generally quite timid. Whether they see a man from a distance or are suddenly confronted, they nearly always run away. Well-fed bears are particularly unlikely to bother with man, because they are afraid or because humans are regarded as a second-rate meal. In northwest Alaska, many stories of polar bears attacking or stalking men relate to the fact that the animals were thin and hungry. Even then they are probably only after seals or other meat that is being carried on a sled or stored in a camp.”
He also says that “… a bear is usually more curious than belligerent, and stories of bears attacking people are probably often the result of curiousity’s leading the bears to investigate what they see. Sometimes, however, a bear will risk anything in order to get food, and may even attack a man.”
So yes, the normal food of a polar bear is non-human, but they have killed and eaten people, although it is apparently a very rare occurrence. This applies as well to black and grizzly bears. Even if a human isn’t considered a prey species by the bears, attacks may occur for other reasons, like defense of their young or food or territory, or maybe even just being in a bad mood (presumably due to injury or sickness or something else, not from watching idiots like Beck and the other fools.)
It’s a good idea to respect big wild critters, and never assume you’re in Disneyworld. I know this first hand, having been charged at and bowled over by a pissed-off cow moose who thought I was too close to her and her calf.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pmUh Glen, even if you’re a vegeterian, you’ve probably killed many more animals than there are animals that have killed you.
Just compare the number of sharks killed by humans to the number of humans killed by sharks.

April 4th, 2008 at 5:29 pmWill these phuckwits never learn? Once the “lower” animals can no longer exist, neither can humans. Personally, when the worst possible case is “everything dies” it’s time to take a few precautions.
On a related note: I recently heard a gentleman on the radio who asserted that the average American cadaver should be considered toxic waste. It seems that all those persistent chemicals are collecting in our bodies. Jeez, who would have figured that eating, breathing and drinking poison results in our bodies becoming poisonous?

Wal-Mart uses the 3 day and 4 day work schedules and actually improved production with them. The 3 day work week was more productive than the 4 day with 4 less hours per day. In short, WE as American citizens should be stepping up to suggest to our employers that we would rather be on the road 3 or 4 days a week instead of sticking to “this is this way we’ve always done it.” Polar Bears will be around after we are long gone.
