Hundreds of Iraqis flee Baghdad.

By Amanda Terkel on Apr 7th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Hundreds of Iraqis flee Baghdad.

At least 14 Iraqi civilians were killed in clashes in Baghdad today; nine of the casualties occurred in Sadr City, the Mahdi Militia’s stronghold that “has been under siege since last week by about 1,000 U.S. and Iraqi troops.” Three American troops were also killed, and hundreds of Iraqis fled Baghdad “as U.S. and Iraqi forces increased pressure on anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who faces an ultimatum to either disband his Mahdi Army or give up politics.”

If Iraqis want to be really safe they ought to stick to strolling through outdoor. carpet bazaars.

  2. Nashoba nowa Says:

Today it seems that we have now turned from a War of Occupation to fighting in the Civil War among the Iraqi Peoples on behalf of the puppet government supported by the Bush Administration. Absolutely sickening to keep hearing their spin placed on this debacle. This farce will continue with us spending 12 billion dollars a month to keep it going, as well as more deaths and wounding of American soldiers, not counting many many more dead Iraqi people. The lies, arrogance, and deceit continue unbated out of Washington.

  3. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

That only means there will be more room to vacation in Iraq this summer for America's reich-wing GOPigs.

  5. judyinnm Says:

An intelligent tactic would be to back al-Sadr, instead of fighting him. He's got the best chance of anyone, to bring Iraqis together.

....But then, we'd have to leave.

  6. nanlichi Says:

But wait, wasn't last week's offensive by Maliki the "Defining Moment" for Iraq and a chance to show the world that the government was able to defend itself from a gang of thugs? That's what Boy George said. Why are American soldiers dying this week? And why did thousands of Iraqi soldiers strip off their uniforms and turn to the dark side?

And the biggest why of all, why does anyone on the face of the earth still support Bush's War?

Keep in mind that the troll claimed, on another thread, to have been a Navy pilot that attacked any Soviet nuclear sub trying to get out of port -- and that he'd been "irradiated". Oh, yeah, and that his dear old Dad lost 10 B-52s in WWII.

Juan C. I'm sure you must be wrong on that figure -- and I'm sure wintermd will back me up on this -- I've heard that the true number of Iraqi dead over the past five years is maybe fifteen or twenty. Definitely less than a hundred.

Not sure where that number comes from but who cares? It says what we want it to say, right, wintermd?

Oh, yeah, baby! Someone's got to run off a few hundred thousand units, and put them everywhere, with a reminder which party wore them at the convention.

The question they asked was who are you voting for and why. Not one said they were voting for mccain. They all said Obama or Hillary and the reason was that we need to get out of Iraq.......

So now it looks like you are making disparaging remarks about our soldiers in the field as well as the democrats. Maybe you should re-evaluate the realities that surround you.

Not very patriotic of you really.

  47. barfly Says:

Thinking about it, Purple Heart bandaids are passe'.

We need a symbol; something to represent the callous disregard which republicans show the troops, and bring home the cost of this war to our soldiers. Something... like shoe taps. The Righties can stay home and tap dance around with reasons for not serving, or with tales of fictional past service - but it's a dance many returning servicemen won't be able to perform, with only one good leg.

It would be an easy thing to do, simply nail some taps to an old pair of combat boots, and encourage young war supporters to try them on, outside political rallies.

  48. barfly Says:

And I'm sure the chickenhawk cheerleaders would be able to put a new spin on the "buckwing."

Stop all this nonsense about how heroic it is to go around killing. It's the 21st century. A new millenium. A time to reach out to build an earth community not an empire.

Don't any of you see how ridiculous it is to continue arguing about how combat is somehow to be lauded and praised. We throw people in jail in this country for violence at a level that harms others.....Domestic violence, child abuse, murder. It is time to break our chains to the military industrial empire. They are enriching themselves and bleeding America dry.

Wintermd, does it occur to you that it was the capitulation and apathy of the German people to question the methods and techniques of Hitler that brought Germany to its knees. Does any part of that sound familiar? We invade a sovereign nation based on lines and then make excuses as to why we need to continue to occupy it?

Stupid foolish Americans who continue to romanticize the military. It's time for some major attitude adjustments. How many bombs and guns will it take to win their hearts and minds huh?

Three American troops were also killed, and hundreds of Iraqis fled Baghdad “as U.S. and Iraqi forces increased pressure on anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who faces an ultimatum to either disband his Mahdi Army or give up politics.”

And they think this kind of bullying tactics are going to work. They obviously haven't learned anything about the Iraqi people. This is just going to make al Sadr stronger and more popular. The Iraqi's don't respond positively to being threatened or bullied.

  57. mary Says:

At one point they were talking about how the Dems both are saying to leave by summer 2010 and how the pro-war people are saying that that's reckless. So Chris basically challenged the guy to say, if two years is reckless, how many years would be okay with him? The dweeb responded with something like, "Hopefully not much longer than that." Okay, so, again, how many years would be okay?

I guess they think they can get away with saying, "Between 2 years and 100 years".

  63. bogtrotters Says:

    From the USA Today article:

Facing broad political opposition, key al-Sadr aides went on the defensive Monday, insisting that banning them from politics would be unconstitutional. They proposed talks to resolve the standoff.

"We are calling for dialogue as a way to solve problems among Iraqi groups," al-Sadr aide Salah al-Obeidi told AP Television News in the holy city of Najaf. "Al-Sadr's office affirms that the door is open to reach an understanding regarding these problems."

Another al-Sadr aide, Hassan al-Zarqani, told The Associated Press by telephone from Iran that the Sadrists would consult Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani and other top Shiite clerics in Iraq. If they "recommend he disband the Mahdi Army, he will obey," al-Zarqani said.

You liberal folks don't even know the right metric. How can you say that Bush's War and the Surge are failing when you don't even know how to measure?

There are over 4,000 american soldiers dead and tens of thousands who will sufer for the rest of their lives for Bush's ego. We will have pissed away several trillion dollars and squandered any honor our country had.

    So the fck what?

How many Muslims are dying? How many non Christians are maimed and will suffer for the rest of their lives? Many, many more Muslims are suffering than Christians. Check.

And that, my friends, is the proper metric. Jesus approves of Bush's War, and so shall wintermd.

  66. Merlin Says:

    "Bring 'em on" said Bush...

History News Network’s poll of 109 historians found that 61 percent of them rank Bush as “worst ever” among U.S. presidents. Bush’s key competition comes from Buchanan, apparently, and a further 2 percent of the sample puts Bush right behind Buchanan as runner-up for “worst ever.” 96 percent of the respondents place the Bush presidency in the bottom tier of American presidencies. And was his presidency (it’s a bit wishful to speak of his presidency in the past tense–after all there are several more months left to go) a success or failure? On that score the numbers are still more resounding: 98 percent label it a “failure.”

And so they "came on." And on, and on and on. And the surge is working. And the moon is made of green cheese. And the legacy is already in the books. The historians "came on" too.

Wow. The trolls just keep getting more stupid and disingenuous. Even if the mistakes of a previous administration were justification for the misdeeds of the current administration (Hint: Such is not the case.), even PNAC isn't silly enough to conflate Bosnia and Iraq. Why? Because the U.S. forces were used in the former Yugoslavia, under U.N. control, in hopes of stopping an ongoing genocide.

Iraq on the other hand, no matter how vile the Hussein regime, was a stable, prosperous, nation. And Bushco forbade ANY U.N. involvement. In fact, that was the first red flag I saw.

I asked myself, "If this is legit why is the U.N. being cut out of the loop"? The answer, of course, is that there was nothing legit about our invasion of Iraq. Colin Powell was sent to deliberately lie to the U.N, and force a hands off policy, to the detriment of all involved.

If anyone is too stupid to see the difference I humbly suggest you take a deep breath and count to a thousand. Since you are obviously too stupid to manage such a task, and remember to breathe, we will no longer be plagued by your idiocy.

  77. pete Says:

BTW. I'm quite sure that Iran doesn't feel "surrounded". Our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, however, ARE surrounded, pinned down, and cut off. That might be why at least a quarter of them are suffering from serious stress induced maladies.
