Today during the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) couldn’t contain his excitement over the progress in Iraq. In a moment reminiscent of President Bush’s overblown war rhetoric, Graham declared:
If you put a list of people who wanted us to leave, the number one group would be Al Qaida, because you’ve been kicking them all over Iraq.

Earlier in the day, Graham similarly told a Vets for Freedom rally: “You want to know who wants you to come home more than anybody? Al Qaeda because you’re kicking their ass.”

GRAHAM: If I could promote you to five stars, I would. And if I could — I don’t know where to send you. You’ve been to every bad place there is to go, so I’d send you to a good place, Ambassador Crocker.
I cannot tell you how proud I am of both of you.
GRAHAM: And let’s start this with kind of a 30,000-foot assessment.
The surge, General Petraeus, was a corrective action — is that fair to say?
PETRAEUS: That’s correct, Senator.
GRAHAM: The reason it was a corrective action is between the fall of Baghdad and January of 2007, all of the trend lines were going in the wrong way. Economic stagnation. Political stagnation. Increased proliferation of violence. Therefore, something had to be done, and that something was called a surge.
Now, I would just ask the American people and my colleagues to evaluate fairly from January 2007 to July 2008, and see what’s happened: The challenges are real, but there are things that have happened in that period of time that need to be understood as being beneficial to this country, that came at a heavy price. And Al Qaida cannot stand the surge.

Since 1995, Graham has continued to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and is the only U.S. Senator currently serving in the Guard or Reserves. He is a colonel and is assigned as a Senior Instructor at the Air Force JAG School.

However, they make up the largest “fear” factor to the US population, especially when used by the Republicans as a political device. We can stay in Iraq indefinitely. It will cost us in terms of treasure, military preparedness and propaganda to build up radical Islam in other areas. This is what AQ wants. This was the purpose of the 9/11 attack, i.e. to cause us to act blindly and stupidly so that we become stuck in a quagmire. If we leave, AQ will brag about beating us in Iraq. This is the fault of Bush. He defined this as the central front in the war on terror. He is the one who put us into this no win situation. Here is how it plays out:
1. Stay in Iraq with ever mounting debt and popular unrest. Our economy weakened, our prestige diminished and our enemy emboldened. Eventually, we do leave and it will be precipitous.
2. We start a measured withdrawl doing the best that we can to shore up the Iraqi’s. We cut our losses and redistribute our military to clean up AQ in Afghanistan. Short term publicity and recruiting benefit to AQ. Long term, AQ destroyed in Afghanistan allowing us to go after the disperate cells around the world. We use a judicious use of intelligence, diplomacy and military action to roll up the cells.

The story everytime is that we’re doing just spectacular, but we can never leave. If the violence goes up, we can’t leave or Iraq will descend into chaos. If the violence goes down, we can’t leave because we’d give up our gains. Regardless, it’s more “stay the course”/”surge is working”/”can’t cut and run”. We get new slogans for the same failed strategy.
The big picture is that Iraq has still diverted away from fighting Al Qaeda. The reality is still that we’ve converted Iraq from having a secular, non-Islamic government to a Shia Islam dominated government with close ties to Iran. The big picture is still that Iraq was never even a threat with WMD stockpiles. Saddam’s ties to Al Qaeda still have never existed.
The neo-cons don’t want you to look at the big picture. They want you to only focus on US casualty statistics from 2007 and ignore the uptick in violence in 2008. If they narrow it down to that level, they can fool about 20% of Americans into thinking we are “winning”.
