During today’s hearing with Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) questioned Petraeus on what he called “the major threat” of al Qaeda in Iraq. Coming on the heels of his recent confusion over the nature of al Qaeda, McCain today seemed to refer to al Qaeda as a “sect of Shi’ites”:
MCCAIN: Do you still view al Qaeda in Iraq as a major threat?
PETRAEUS: It is still a major threat, though it is certainly not as major a threat as it was say 15 months ago.
MCCAIN: Certainly not an obscure sect of the Shi’ites overall?
PETREAUS: No.
MCCAIN: Or Sunnis or anybody else.
Watch it:
CQ’s Jeff Stein wrote, “Al Qaeda is profoundly Sunni. If a Shiite showed up at an al Qaeda club house, they’d slice off his head and use it for a soccer ball.” McCain seemed to catch himself and correctly note that al Qaeda is a sect of Sunnis.
In the course of having a serious dialogue with our military leadership in Iraq about how Americans can formulate success going forward, John McCain stumbled on his words and corrected them immediately.
confused?

Oh lord. He really *is* senile.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:20 amOk, not only is McCain older than dirt, he is dumber than dirt.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:23 amShi’ites, Sunnis…McCain covered his butt and lumped them all in. He’s like the kid in the FedEx commercial who can’t locate China on a world map so he “accidentally” falls and tears it off the wall.
Btw, Petraeus might just need that parachute when this is said and done.

A fact of which both McCain and Bush are equally oblivious (or willfully ignorant, as the case may be).

April 8th, 2008 at 11:30 amTime for your nap Grampa. You’ll feel better if you wake up.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:30 amNow, will McCain’s complete lack of even basic understanding of the Al Qaeda threat and Middle East religious conflict in general get even half as much time as the sermon by Reverend Wright? or Hillary’s sniper fire claim?
I highly doubt it.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:30 amI honestly don’t think this is so “accidental.” He is simply trying to connect AQI to Iran, just as the Bush administration tried to connect Saddam to AQ and 911. Both McCain and Lieberman talked about Iran backing the Shite militias, but I’m still waiting for someone to talk about the President of Iran’s recent visit to see Maliki in Iraq and the extremely friendly relationship between them. In addition, Sadr appears to be an “Iraqi nationalist,” while Maliki’s ties to Iran are far stronger than his apparent ties to his own country.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:32 amWe should all be concerned by McCain’s mental condition. The press has always had a soft spot for McCain. This is something that McCain has seized upon and exploited. However, we have all seen what has happened to any president, one or two terms, from the stress of the experience. This has to be a factor in this election. Regan made it through his presidency, however, there were already signs of a declining mental process. Those signs are far more pronounced in McCain as he starts the campaign.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:32 amBULLSHIT ALERT!
Inhofe says the Iraqi detainee HE spoke to had NO COMPLAINTS about how they were being treated. Hmmm…
Petraeus responds to Inhofe’s questions about detainees that they have separated the “irreconcilables” from the “reconcilables”.
The detainees get “good food and healthcare”.
WE don’t get free healthcare!
Detainees also get FREE EDUCATION! Apparently some of the detainese have preferred to STAY INCARCERATED so that they can complete their courses!
Everyone gets a pony!
April 8th, 2008 at 11:32 amThe sad thing is that I think he really does know the difference and is willfully conflating any resistance or insurgence in Iraq with those blamed for 9/11.
It’s that simple really.

.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:37 amExactly #14,
The so-called government of Iraq (more like the protectorate of the green zone) is both backed by the US and Iran. The nationalist Shiites are the ones that don’t want foreigners ruling them. That applies to both the US AND Iran. So the enemies of the US in this case happen to also be the enemies of Iran. Funny, huh?
April 8th, 2008 at 11:37 amI didn’t think anyone was as stupid as Bush.

April 8th, 2008 at 11:42 amNot a bad summation, Alejandro.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:42 amThese GOP partisans are dead set on stirring up another raid on the treasury (war) with Iran. They are twisting facts and stretching the truth to fit their preconceived notions. McCain”s one truly lucid moment was when he sang, “Bomb, bomb, bomb. GOP wants more war, more debt, more foreclosures, more people desperate for healthcare, more people desperate to work for whatever crumbs the elite are willing to let fall to the floor. If you aren’t making a million dollars a year and you are voting Repub, then you are a sucker.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:42 amClearly McWars is too old to be president, he can’t remember things from day to day. He needs to do a cheat sheet, like write it on his arm or his palm, something like that.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:42 amIs McCain a doddering fool, or are his constant Sunni/Shia mix-ups part of a calculated attempt to mislead Americans into believing Iran and AQ are one and the same (and thereby support bombing Iran)?
I suspect that McCain may be playing the doddering fool to his advantage. This way, he won’t have the same problem Hillary has. Hillary is known for doing her homework and being very prepared for everything she does. When she says she “misspoke” when she talked about the “danger” she faced in Bosnia, everybody knew this was shorthand for “Darn - I didn’t know I was going to get caught in that lie.”
McCain will do everything he can to get us stuck in a quagmire in Iran. This means he will conflate, mislead, and just outright make stuff up. And he’s hoping that when he “misspeaks”, people will believe him.

April 8th, 2008 at 11:50 amHmm, gas prices wouldn’t be so high if it weren’t for the war in Iraq.
1st off, the production coming out of Iraq is way down.
Second, war consumes more petroleum than any other activity by a long shot.
Third, the war has driven the dollar down so far that it takes more to buy a barrel of oil. Remember, the Euro started out in parity with the dollar in 2000. Right now oil is US$108/bl and Eur68/bl.
It’s the war that made oil so high. You think that drilling for a few extra barrels in Texas or Alaska will change that?

April 8th, 2008 at 12:30 pmThe reviews are in:
“Carlos I Hapsburgo is a disappointing sequel” — Russ Gerach, Arts Weekly
“That the producers rushed this follow-up into production is painfully obvious. Weak script, lame jokes… tarnishes the good name of Felipe”. — Michael Medvedev, Country Bulletin
“Another cynical attempt to cash in on an earlier success.” — Hugh Jorgan, Stamp Collector’s Weekly
I predict an early closing for this production.

Well my aunt Sally’s sisters son’s brother told me that the troops are finally getting the truth through the fog of war and that is the only real progaganda going on here.
Why don’t you just admit that all you are really all about is “HATE”. That’s what oozes from between the lines of each of your posts.

He just proved it by repeatedly asserting it. See, if you say the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again it automatically becomes true.
They’ve said it so many times that I figure it has to be true by now. I say we just accept our Islamist alliance and move on.

I think your revolution of right wing killers of left wingers is just a figment of your drug crazed, vidio game warped mind.
If I were you I would be getting some therapy because people who continue to walk around saying things like you are saying will soon be considered mentally deficient.
Your bellicose anger has only been allowed because we have lost control temporarily to the right wing extreemists. That will soon end.
April 8th, 2008 at 12:40 pmwow - this one’s a real ranter - a genuine bull-goose lunatic.
It’s especially funny, given we have so many vets who are regulars here, including some from the Gulf War and the current invasion/occupation.
But for a simpleton, it will never matter how many of our troops come home and run for office as Democrats, or how many of them start organizations like VoteVets, or how many participate in programs like Winter Soldiers. Just understand, all of you who’ve contributed to the Yellow Ribbon Fund - you are the backstabbers, according to the lunatic fringe.

Petraeus was General of the 101st Airborne Division. Every member of Airborne, including officers have to be certified, ready to jump.
In 2000, he had an accident on a 60 foot jump and shattered his pelvis.
April 8th, 2008 at 1:39 pm“I could play Stairway to Heaven when I was twelve. Jimmy Page didn’t actually write it until he was twenty-two. I think that says quite a lot.”

April 8th, 2008 at 1:39 pmYou silly people, of course Al Qaeda is Shi’ite. Iran is the bad guy and the Saudis give us our oil and our bestest friends, Al Qaeda has to be Shi’ite no matter what the reality is.
HTF to expect to maintain a professional level of demagoguery and American exceptionalism without lying through your teeth about it.
April 8th, 2008 at 1:49 pmMcCain looks and sounds very Presidential. Yes this is actually what the American people want in a President, a man not not woman, who doesn’t know anything and is senile white man to make sure the US goes into a depression. But there might be a chance for a black man with a great speech to sit in the Oval Office as John Kerry runs the White House. Finally America will have what they want a White Male President with a black man just giving the State of the Union Speeches and giving photo ops around the world. Just Obama will be doing just as Bush has been doing for pass 7 years.
April 8th, 2008 at 2:10 pmsunni and shia and the rest of the islamic world all read the same book(Qur’an) and have the same basic beliefs.
and we still dont know the extent of al-qaida’s reach so how can one speculate as to whether or not (they) are a sect at all let alone shia or sunni.
April 8th, 2008 at 2:56 pmDon’t forget Biden’s confusion:
The link to the testimony I found requires a subscription.
But Maureen Dowd references it too.
April 9th, 2008 at 3:07 amTo clarify, the confusion from Biden is that the (almost 80% Sunni) Awakening would certainly not go to war against Sunnis in Iraq. They may combat a particular group like al Qaeda, which is Sunni, but they would not generally fight Sunnis, and the complaint against them is that they may wind up at war with Shi’a on a broad basis. Biden’s wrong and I didn’t notice a correction.
He did, however, correct another mistatement:
Well, I guess he’s not running for president, and even though he chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Cmte., it’s no biggie, right?

April 10th, 2008 at 9:29 pmHere’s the part that I simply do not understand: I’m a busy person. I work 50-60 hours a week, I spend time maintaining my home and other property, I invest time to relate to my wife and children, I keep up my golf game, and I have no problem in understanding and maintaining the distinction between religious sects in general. That is, I also invest time to understand what’s going on by examining different sources and forming (and maintaining) my own opinion. Specifically, I completely get the origin and the history of the Sunni/Shi’ite divide.
How is it that politicians can’t get this? I’ll allow a little slack–say, five years since 9/11/2001–to cover any paradigm problems. It’s been more than 7.5 years, and it’s not just McCain that doesn’t get it.
I conclude that there exists a deliberate and intentional effort to obscure the understanding and internalization of this vital distinction, e.g., terms like islamofascism.
