McCain seems confused about al Qaeda again, suggests it’s a ’sect of Shi’ites.’

During today’s hearing with Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) questioned Petraeus on what he called “the major threat” of al Qaeda in Iraq. Coming on the heels of his recent confusion over the nature of al Qaeda, McCain today seemed to refer to al Qaeda as a “sect of Shi’ites”:

MCCAIN: Do you still view al Qaeda in Iraq as a major threat?

PETRAEUS: It is still a major threat, though it is certainly not as major a threat as it was say 15 months ago.

MCCAIN: Certainly not an obscure sect of the Shi’ites overall?

PETREAUS: No.

MCCAIN: Or Sunnis or anybody else.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/04/mccainshiites.320.240.flv]

CQ’s Jeff Stein wrote, “Al Qaeda is profoundly Sunni. If a Shiite showed up at an al Qaeda club house, they’d slice off his head and use it for a soccer ball.” McCain seemed to catch himself and correctly note that al Qaeda is a sect of Sunnis.

Digg It!

Update Ilan Goldenberg has more.
Update Frank James at The Swamp writes, "McCain may want to work on this obvious weakness in his Iraq fund of knowledge. Maybe flash cards would help."
Update A McCain spokesman acknowledges McCain "stumbled":

In the course of having a serious dialogue with our military leadership in Iraq about how Americans can formulate success going forward, John McCain stumbled on his words and corrected them immediately.

  14. impeachcheneythenbush says:

I honestly don’t think this is so “accidental.” He is simply trying to connect AQI to Iran, just as the Bush administration tried to connect Saddam to AQ and 911. Both McCain and Lieberman talked about Iran backing the Shite militias, but I’m still waiting for someone to talk about the President of Iran’s recent visit to see Maliki in Iraq and the extremely friendly relationship between them. In addition, Sadr appears to be an “Iraqi nationalist,” while Maliki’s ties to Iran are far stronger than his apparent ties to his own country.

  15. JMOHR says:

We should all be concerned by McCain’s mental condition. The press has always had a soft spot for McCain. This is something that McCain has seized upon and exploited. However, we have all seen what has happened to any president, one or two terms, from the stress of the experience. This has to be a factor in this election. Regan made it through his presidency, however, there were already signs of a declining mental process. Those signs are far more pronounced in McCain as he starts the campaign.

    BULLSHIT ALERT!

Inhofe says the Iraqi detainee HE spoke to had NO COMPLAINTS about how they were being treated. Hmmm…

Petraeus responds to Inhofe’s questions about detainees that they have separated the “irreconcilables” from the “reconcilables”.
The detainees get “good food and healthcare”.

    WE don’t get free healthcare!

Detainees also get FREE EDUCATION! Apparently some of the detainese have preferred to STAY INCARCERATED so that they can complete their courses!

The so-called government of Iraq (more like the protectorate of the green zone) is both backed by the US and Iran. The nationalist Shiites are the ones that don’t want foreigners ruling them. That applies to both the US AND Iran. So the enemies of the US in this case happen to also be the enemies of Iran. Funny, huh?

Is McCain a doddering fool, or are his constant Sunni/Shia mix-ups part of a calculated attempt to mislead Americans into believing Iran and AQ are one and the same (and thereby support bombing Iran)?

I suspect that McCain may be playing the doddering fool to his advantage. This way, he won’t have the same problem Hillary has. Hillary is known for doing her homework and being very prepared for everything she does. When she says she “misspoke” when she talked about the “danger” she faced in Bosnia, everybody knew this was shorthand for “Darn – I didn’t know I was going to get caught in that lie.”

McCain will do everything he can to get us stuck in a quagmire in Iran. This means he will conflate, mislead, and just outright make stuff up. And he’s hoping that when he “misspeaks”, people will believe him.

  45. Alejandro says:

Hmm, gas prices wouldn’t be so high if it weren’t for the war in Iraq.

1st off, the production coming out of Iraq is way down.
Second, war consumes more petroleum than any other activity by a long shot.
Third, the war has driven the dollar down so far that it takes more to buy a barrel of oil. Remember, the Euro started out in parity with the dollar in 2000. Right now oil is US$108/bl and Eur68/bl.

It’s the war that made oil so high. You think that drilling for a few extra barrels in Texas or Alaska will change that?

    Don’t forget Biden’s confusion:

Is there any conditions in which those charts you showed us, if this time in November or October, the American deaths have spiked back up to 2006 levels; if in fact, the Awakening has decided it’s awake and it’s not going to be integrated and it’s better to go to war with the Sunnis, the civil war becomes more a reality

The link to the testimony I found requires a subscription.

But Maureen Dowd references it too.

  142. thirdparty says:

To clarify, the confusion from Biden is that the (almost 80% Sunni) Awakening would certainly not go to war against Sunnis in Iraq. They may combat a particular group like al Qaeda, which is Sunni, but they would not generally fight Sunnis, and the complaint against them is that they may wind up at war with Shi’a on a broad basis. Biden’s wrong and I didn’t notice a correction.

He did, however, correct another mistatement:

    BIDEN:
Let me give you specifics. Ninety thousand 90,000 Shia say, we’re not getting dealt in, and the same kind of exchange in violence between Sunni and Shia is reignited in September, from Anbar province into Basra — I mean, excuse me, Anbar province into Baghdad. And that same level of ethno-sectarian violence is once again established. That’s a condition. What do you do?

Well, I guess he’s not running for president, and even though he chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Cmte., it’s no biggie, right?

I work 50-60 hours a week, I spend time maintaining my home and other property, I invest time to relate to my wife and children, I keep up my golf game, and I have no problem in understanding and maintaining the distinction between religious sects in general. That is, I also invest time to understand what’s going on by examining different sources and forming (and maintaining) my own opinion. Specifically, I completely get the origin and the history of the Sunni/Shi’ite divide.

How is it that politicians can’t get this? I’ll allow a little slack–say, five years since 9/11/2001–to cover any paradigm problems. It’s been more than 7.5 years, and it’s not just McCain that doesn’t get it.

I conclude that there exists a deliberate and intentional effort to obscure the understanding and internalization of this vital distinction, e.g., terms like islamofascism.
