In last September’s hearing, Gen. Petraeus was asked whether the Iraq war makes the U.S. safer. “I don’t know,” Petraeus responded. Today, Sen. John Warner (R-VA) pressed Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker again. “Is all this sacrifice bringing about a more secure America?” he asked.
But Petraeus — seemingly glancing at his notes — did not directly answer. “There is no longer a ruthless dictator in Iraq,” he said. “Ultimately, it can only be answered by history, once the outcome in Iraq has been determined. … I believe the more important question is at this point how to achieve our our important interests in Iraq.”
Warner, noticing Petraeus’s hedge, pressed again:
WARNER: It was a fairly simple question: does that translate into a greater security for those of us at home? … Can you now just tell us in simple language tell us yes it is worth it, and it is making us safer here at home?
PETRAEUS: Senator, I do believe it is worth it, otherwise I would have not accepted. … I took on the task of, the privilege of command of MNF-Iraq because I do believe that it is worth, and I do believe the interests there are of enormous importance, again, to our country, not just to the people of Iraq and the people of that region and the world.
When Warner asked Crocker the same question, Crocker praised efforts against al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), saying AQI has been “lessened.” “I do believe that makes America safer,” Crocker said. Watch it:
Petraeus and Crocker refused to admit that fighting in Iraq does nothing to decrease the threat from the global al Qaeda terrorist network. FBI Director Robert Mueller recently cited the “three-tiered threat” that al Qaeda poses to the West, but Iraq is not referenced in that analysis:
The top tier was the core of the organisation which had established new sanctuaries in Pakistan’s tribal areas. The middle tier was the most complex, consisting of small, self-directed groups like the London bombers of 7/7 who had some ties to al-Qaeda’s leadership. The bottom tier, said Mr Mueller, was made up of homegrown extremists who met on the internet instead of in foreign training camps.
Similarly, the New York Times reported today that fears of Iraq becoming a terrorist incubator “appear to be overblown,” as “the number of fighters going to Iraq [from Europe] has been extremely small,” according to French intelligence. But the longer the U.S. occupies Iraq, the danger that Iraq may become an incubator will increase.

_______________________________________________
It’s true that I have not been affected by a recent terrorist attack. I also haven’t been personally bonked on the head by a falling meteorite. Who do I thank for that?
Contrary to the belief of some, terrorism is not the biggest threat to us. I run a much bigger risk of being killed by a drunk driver or getting caught in the crossfire of a robbery gone wrong than I do of getting killed by a terrorist. Yet what are our leaders doing about that? Where’s the “war on drunk driving”?
Now, as far as keeping America safe from terrorists — not even Petraeus can confidently and unequivocally say that we are more secure for our efforts in Iraq. Maybe that’s because while we are making little bits of progress against AQI, AQI wouldn’t have even been an issue if we had just left Iraq alone and focused on the true perpetrators of 9/11.
Oh, and your use of the words “patriot” and “traitor” just demonstrates you have no clue what either of them means.

Grab yer pitchfork and go on a little crusade! Yeeehaww! We won’t buy your bull, still, but at least it’ll be entertained.
I’m noticing that the hardcore republicans are desparate now. My Dad just tried to link H-1B Visas to Illegal Immigration. I laughed behind my hand. He then said that Republicans would be tough on illegal immigration. I then asked: “Oh, you mean Republicans like George ‘Let’s Make Them Legal Then Build a Fence…what do you mean closing the barn doors after the horse has already gotten out….horse?! ACK!’ Bush and John ‘We’ll come down on Illegals like a ton of bricks but won’t go after the businesses that hire them because that’s free market’ McCain? And what does Illegal Immigration have to do with big IT companies deliberately disqualifying American workers so they can get H1Bs? Those people are on _VISAs_…making them LEGAL, until they return to India and China, and take our work because they work for 1/5th our wages and even their wages + long-distance connections is cheaper than hiring one of us, customer satisfaction be damned.” He gave up after that.
I’m gonna address the Troll directly here. We’re not buying your crap. Go somewhere where you can sell your crap. You’ll find that there are fewer people who wish to buy your crap than there are people who don’t wish to buy your crap. You and your fellow 20%ers will remain just that, lamers caught in an echo-chamber filled with a handful of voices all screaming the same thing. McCain may win (thanks to Dem infighting in the Primary…if Hillary and Obama were to team up on McCain, his ass would be grass), but it’s almost a foregone conclusion…the Congress is going SHARPLY blue, possibly to the point of McCain being powerless, facing a Veto-Proof Majority in the House and a Filibuster-Proof Majority, if not a Veto Proof Majority, in the Senate. I’ll take those results, though I’d rather Obama for Pres and your goons all second-string has-beens lamenting about “We were so close! Victory was within our grasp!” Much like Gul Dukat and the Cardassian Union and Dominion, your days are numbered. Soon you’ll be going for whackier and whackier fringe Christian derived religions searching for power from On High much like Gul Dukat in DS9 searched for the Pagh Wraiths after the ‘inevitable victory’ of the Dominion was broken by hard work and dedication. I wonder if you’ll find your Pagh Wraith? Hint: They gave their worshippers power over fire. Perhaps you might know them by another name…and remember that that particular Fallen Angel who fell through his Pride that he was right and everyone else, including the Almighty itself, was wrong, loves to seduce Christians who lust for power. :)

to try to render the results of the disaster in Iraq to subjective or opinion is just dishonest. Nothing positive has resulted from this mistake.
Our own troops are supporting candidates who want to find a way out of this “QUAGMIRE”. Are their opinions subjective?
April 8th, 2008 at 2:16 pmSay, Daryll - as you’ve noticed, I need a LOT of prayer. A whole HELL of a LOT. In fact, I think you should make me your full-time prayer project. You know, pray for me every single day, 24/7/365…?

So - how ’bout it, D? Get busy!! What are you doing still here, Daryll?? God’s waiting to hear from you on my behalf!
April 8th, 2008 at 2:17 pmThe problem with this whole line of questioning is that these questions are above Petraeus’ pay grade. Petraeus is responsible for implementing a strategy, not for making that strategy. George Bush should be addressing the questions which are being asked of Petraeus. Unfortunately, George Bush is just running out the clock.
Congress needs to take control of this situation. When the Commander in Chief absolves himself of his responsibilities then the Congress needs to step forward to fill the leadership vacuum.

April 8th, 2008 at 2:22 pmSaying that we haven’t been attacked in six and a half years is a great success reminds me of a sports team who touts their win/loss record for the second half of a season after losing every game in the first half of the season. Sure, we haven’t been attacked … since one of the worst attacks on United States soil in history. The current administration was “on watch” during that attack, did nothing useful to stop it, and has even botched our revenge for the attack. In other words, “…even though there has been little to no actual success, I believe in it and will lie my ass off to you and the rest of America so I can further my career. Even though my superiors are constantly telling me that the troops are wearing thin and the focus should be in Afghanistan and Pakistan, I’m in charge of Iraq and will defend endless war over here despite the hard facts.”

Mere deception and deflection. You, Daryll, said that God told you Mike Huckabee would be our next President. You offered no qualifying statements. You passed on a lie. This can’t be disputed. However, we don’t know the source of that lie. Was it you? Was it God? There are no other options.
Perhaps it would be more fair if I explain why I care? You see, even though I’m an atheist, I study religion and philosophy. If nothing else I have learned that alleged deities HATE liars. So, I would like to know your opinion.
Does your God hate you? Or. Does your God hate himself? Because one (both?) of you lied to all of us. I have plenty of reasons to dislike both of you, but, I prefer to make determinations based on an individuals own words/actions. I don’t approve of assigning guilt by association. But one of you is deserving of a little more of my contempt. So, which will it be.

April 8th, 2008 at 2:39 pmUltimately, it can only be answered by history, once the outcome in Iraq has been determined
Actually, I think that’s the first answer he got correct. It’s not his job to tell anyone whether the particular war he’s been given is good or bad for the country. It’s his job to prosecute it, or if in his “expert military opinion” it is not winnable, to advise another strategy. He’s not the leader of the country, and I refuse to blame him for the consequences of the Iraq war, whether we ‘win’ or not. His job is to fight it, and we have no business asking him to answer a political question.
That having been said, he’s a pin-head.

There! Sorry gang, I’m done bashing Daryll, for now. Back on topic.
There is a very good reason why there have been no recent attacks within the U.S. That being, Bushco has provided 140,000 (at any given moment) targets in exposed positions. If one studies the words of various terrorists one will learn that Bushco has given them exactly what they wanted. A vast U.S. military adventure which leaves our fine soldiers in harm’s way.
Surrounded. Pinned down. Cut off. No relief in site.
Also. Have you noticed that the Reichwingers cite attacks on U.S. military targets before the invasion (U.S.S Cole, Lebanon barracks etc.) while they don’t count the thousands attacked in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Whenever one of the bottom feeders tries to claim we are “safer” I urge you all to remind them that we have been attacked, on a daily basis, since the beginning of this mad adventure.
