Even After Listening To ‘Rousing’ Cheney Speech, Troops Back Pro-Withdrawal Candidates»

Last month, Vice President Dick Cheney visited Iraq, where he vowed the U.S. would keep “a long-term military presence in Iraq until al-Qaida is defeated” there. The same day, a bomb killed two American soldiers outside of Bagdad, and a suicide bomber killed 43 Iraqis in Karbala.

Just after his visit, ABC correspondent Martha Raddatz spoke with soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan about their political preferences, and found that most of the soldiers she spoke to favored candidates who supported withdrawal from Iraq:

Only moments before speaking with ABC News, the troops had been listening to Vice President Dick Cheney give a rousing speech, but it didn’t change their political preference. […]

Though the military is generally a more conservative group, soldiers like Sgt. Justin Sarbaum are just as eager for a pull-out as the Democratic candidates. Sarbaum said he wondered which presidential candidate would be able to better the U.S. relationship with rogue nations, such as Iran, so that soldiers are not sent off to another war.

Watch Raddatz’s report:

One soldier, Spc. Imus Loto, explained he supported the presidential candidacy of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) because of his plan to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq:

REPORTER: But he [Obama] wants to pull out of Iraq.

LOTO: Pull me out too.

In 2006, 72 percent of U.S. soldiers favored withdrawal within one year. Apparently, all Cheney has to say to them now is, “So?

UpdatePrivate First Class Jeremy Slate had a "so" of his own to offer:
RADDATZ: He wants to pull out of Iraq right away.
SLATE: Yes, so?

RADDATZ: You do, too?

SLATE: Well, that would be nice. I'd like to be home.Yes.

How long before Fat Bastard Limpballs claims those quoted are “phony soldiers” ?

  2. misshusseinmolly Says:

Here in North Carolina (home of Fort Bragg, Camp Lejeune, Pope AFB, etc.), military families are as weary of this occupation as the soldiers themselves are. They are proud of their loved ones who are serving, but many of these loved ones are on their third, fourth, and even fifth deployments to Iraq. And for what? They’re not buying the “romance and glory” angle.

It might be enough to turn this red state blue.

George Bush and Dick Cheney often use troops as backdrops for their speeches because they can count on them to cheer on demand. This should not be interpreted as support for their policies.

  6. nanlichi Says:

So? According to Cheney they volunteered and they should STFU and follow orders.

Proud Americans, strong family tradition, good people who were lied to and sold down the river by a warmongering evil bastard and his coke snorting lying fratboy puppet.

Cheney is going to need SS protection for as long as he lives when these kids get back and find out who the real enemy is.

  9. Kay Says:

The Corporate CONtrolled Media will keep us in Iraq. Too many of the law makers in DC are making money in this Military Industrial Complex to pull out of Iraq. The seeds for an invasion of Iran are being sewn today as Betrayus recited Cheney’s words on Capitol Hill.

What this post also doesn’t say is that there are increasingly radicalized Military members who blame the Leftists for stabbing them in the back and supporting the Jihadists. This bears watching. My cousin who fought in Iraq said this group will start to form a political movement. They will target the Left, whom they feel stabbed them in the back.

He told me that some of the Computers they seized from AQI or the Mahdi Army has websites like Think Progress and Daily Kos on them. This shows that read and get encouragement from the Leftists.

I salute the Left, you have enabled Islam to achieve it’s biggest victory since Mohacs in 1526. I salute and respect the Left’s power.

You should be proud, but beware, an anti-Leftist movement is growing with many in the military stabbed in the back. Just giving you guys a heads up. Celebrate your victory, but something will be coming your way. You guys will soon be dealing with a New Rightwing that is is more ruthless and vicious than you guys.

You will deal with a new Rightwing that is for higher Minimun Wage, Universal Healthcare, Energy Indepence, anti-Free Trade and anti-Globalization. We will neutralize the Left’s advantage on economic issues.
It will come down to the Left’s support of Sharia Law and Ilamization of America. The new Right is opposed to this so we will defeat you!

    _____

So let me get this straight. You’ll defeat the Left by becoming the Left. And then you’ll defeat a nonexistent Leftist policy of Islamization that only exists in your twisted little brain.

So do you plan to start with our Islamization policy, or start by defeating Bigfoot and the Tooth Fairy and Charybdis and other mythical creatures first? I’d suggest you start small - the Tooth Fairy looks like a pushover.

I wonder what someone like “Felipe” makes for derailing a message board. Are they paid hourly or by the post. I’d guess by the post, but given that he is probably our Pentagon assigned psy-ops disrupter, he is probably just making grade. Do their superiors send a weekly report to Robert Gates about how many blogs were disrupted. Sir, yes sir, we disrupted one hundred Think Progress discussions this week. Good job soldier.

  95. DRxJ Says:

Of course, Operation Flag and Delete also works nicely!

    Zooey,
Yes you’re a coward! I guess your pinmp slapped you too much when you ran tricks.

Only a troll has to resort to name calling and slander. Progressive thinkers do not.

If you have any facts that you would like to share in a dignified debate, bring um on… We are waiting…

Your rhetoric is getting boring and is accomplishing nothing.

  97. Alejandro Says:

Is it really true that Obama wants to pull ALL troops out of Iraq the way Kucinich, Gravel, or Paul would have?

    That’s a big HELL NO.

Someone needs to pin Obama down on this. “Senator Obama, do you pledge to have ALL US troops and private military contractors from Iraq by the end of your term?”

    Watch him say no.

  98. tombaker Says:

dang! I seem to have missed the fun, and a “rousing”!?WTF speech by lil’ Dick.

I like him best on the show “Lil’ Bush”: “rah rah rah-rah rah”

  99. John Kerry Says:

I’m glad all of the soldiers were polled!!

The bad nws for you wacked out libs is that Hill and Hussein will actually KEEP the soldiers there as evidenced by admissions recently from their campaign people!!

    Sorry!

  100. fletc3her Says:

Slapping myself on the head. Robert Gates wouldn’t hire soldiers to do something he could outsource. Felipe probably works for a direct mail firm or a call center. When he is not fielding calls about the exterminator racket he is assigned to this blog. He sits there, alone in his cubicle, cackling gleefully when he posts a particularly good zing. And, then the war profiteer who runs the defense contractor sends the report on to Robert Gates.

  101. RUCerious Says:

Seems like our troll has an Hispanic name affinity this morning. Right Al?

  102. hussein toasterhead Says:

Whew! He’s gone. Now I can finish sending my usual coded messages to Muqtada as-Sadr:

    _____

Amy Goodman did two weeks ago. He said no.

I don’t expect him to have all troops and contractors out by the end of his term, either, but I do expect them to have a VERY different mission - guarding the Embassy, not playing political games with al-Maliki.

should really read the title of the thread before posting.

Felipe would imply that the right is going to attack even members of our military who don’t support the right’s mission.

Alejandro, you really should be paying more attention before posting……everyone wants out of Iraq asap except the bush blood for money warmongers.

Our soldiers are saying that we should come home too. Are you guys questioning thier patriotism too now?

  105. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

I think our troll was making what would be considered “terrorist threats.” In that case, TP should report him to the proper authorities. There have been other incidents of ex-military, far right wing violence in the U.S. before, i.e., Oklahoma City.

  106. Fred Says:

Alejandro, It is possible that I misunderstood the point you were making. If that is so then I apologize.

  107. Buckie Boy Says:

Hehehe, just read all the comments here, man, that troll was…what…like 15 years old with the mentality of an 8 year old? Funny, you guys did have some fun with Whack-a-troll with that idiot. Hehehe, very cute.

  108. Jackie Says:

Soldier Cheney would know all about War and the Military. Our troops are listening to a Leader who was so scared he got 5 deferments rather then serve the USA when needed. As a Mother of a Military soldier what the Captains call Bush/Cheney should never be repeated to decent people. If you think Cheney’s language is bad the soldiers are worse. They know they were lied to by the drunk drug wacko Liar-in-Chief. While visiting the base behind closed doors all the talk was about who they would vote for President. Hillary or Obama and for some reason they laughed when I said McCain was a candidate.

  109. L. Hussein Annie Says:

Heh. Those must be the PHONY SOLDIERS.

    /snark off

  110. pete Says:

Aw dang! I missed the fun. But, on a serious note, I wonder how many of our brave soldiers will have their ballots disqualified through caging?

  111. L. Hussein Annie Says:

Oh my. Felipe El Flatullo Hapsburgerollo!! A troll with a flair for melodrama.

    How entertaining!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

  112. pete Says:

Maybe it isn’t fun? I’ve perused some other threads and it looks like a slack-jawed yokel exploded. When is TP going to start banning by IP address? It seems like it would be easier on everyone.

  113. Chocolate Jesus Says:

    >Jesus, you are funny.

    thank you

I’m questioning their knowledge of the candidates.
There is no “pro-withdrawal” candidate, including Obama.

There were a few, but none are left.

    Felipe II Hapsburgo Says:

    1) Smells like The Joker/Rodan/whatever, the far righter “latino” paladin, or maybe Mr. P, who had a penchant for history, and tends to embrace absolutist models.

    2) If you’re going to use the name of a 16th Century Spanish monarch, name it correctly: It’s spelled “Habsburgo” in Castilian.
