During his questioning of Gen. Petraeus and Amb. Crocker, Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) said that, because of the Iraq war, “we’re at a point where we’re really strained and stressed out.” “I hate to agree with Sen. Feingold,” he added, “but I think Osama bin Laden is sitting back right now looking at this thing [and saying] in effect, ‘We’re kinda bankrupting this country.’ We are eating our seed corn. We’ve got some really big problems today, and we are in a recession, and God only knows how long we’re gonna be in it.” Watch it:
Voinovich argued that the course in Iraq should consist of the U.S. telling its Middle East allies, “Hey guys, we’re on our way out.” We need “a surge in diplomacy,” he added. “The American people have had it up to here.”

Out of the left side of his mouth comes criticism of the Bush administration and policies. Out of the right side of his mouth comes the “aye” vote for those same policies. This is one Ohioan that Voinovich does NOT represent.
April 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pmno no no, certainly spending a million billion gazillion dollars in iraq so the iraqis can have the freedumb to throw parades for iranian heads of state is somethign that very important for our national security.
there are some things where no good outcome is possible. dousing yourself in napalm and lighting a match is one. invading iraq is another..
April 8th, 2008 at 7:48 pmI wonder. Tomorrow, will he announce he’s retiring to “spend time with his family”?
April 8th, 2008 at 7:49 pmWas it just me, or did he also seem to imply that Obama will be our next President? He seemed to be saying the American people are no longer buying the Iraq propaganda, so it makes no sense to continue to spread it. The people are about to elect a President who will withdraw our forces regardless of any success Petraeus tries to claim.
At least that was how I interpreted his comments…
April 8th, 2008 at 7:49 pmI don’t understand why people in this country are so bent on doing the ‘perfect,’ when you have something that is good and makes sense from a cost-benefit point of view.
-George Voinovich
Liberating Iraq from a legacy of violence and putting it on the path to peace and prosperity will take time.
-George Voinovich
The economy is showing encouraging signs of recovery.
April 8th, 2008 at 7:50 pm-George Voinovich
“I hate to agree with Sen. Feingold,”
Yeah, him being a Democrat and all that…
April 8th, 2008 at 7:54 pmKnock me over with a feather! Did he just say he agreed with Feingold?!?!?
April 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pmIgnoring the mouthpiece, the postulation put forth finally shows some semblance of reality.
April 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pmThe whole aim of OBL and his brand of terrorism is succeeding famously.
He has an entire nation in fear and bankruptcy.
he and his ilk attacked the World Trade Center. Twice.
World Trade Center. Repeat as many times as it takes for it to sink in.
Send Condi over for a little “surge in diplomacy.” She’s rested and ready. She hasn’t done anything in years.
April 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pm‘We’re kinda bankrupting this country.’
No $hit Sherlock. Even the Republicans are starting to see the handwriting on the wall. I thought that perhaps he is up for re-election, but he’s not until 2010. So, good on you Voinovich for finally seeing the truth.
April 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pmMaybe he’s seen the light, after Ohio dumped idiot Taft and sleazoid Blackwell.
April 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pmHmm… invading Iraq is bankrupting the country? Just like bin Laden did to the Soviets???
Someone shoulda seen this coming.
OH YEAH! SOMEONE DID!
THE LEFT!!!
April 8th, 2008 at 7:59 pmOr maybe he went back to Ohio, and his city was gone…
April 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pmOBL is sitting back playing video games on his newest Sony Playstation, laughing his ass off, while sitting on a stack of millions of our lost money, thinking what dopes Bush and Cheney are.
OBL: Hey, Abu, throw another stack of hundreds on the fire, it’s getting chilly in here.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pmGreat. Now we need a “surge in diplomacy”. Something tells me BushCo ain’t the Go-to Guys for that. They’re great at starting wars, invading nations that aren’t a threat, even saber rattling they’re pretty good at.
Diplomacy? Not so much.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:01 pmWow. Sen Voinovich gets it. You know how this goes. The Republicans all will hold their tongues until after the day after the election is decided and then you watch–this is the most delicious part–how much the Republicans will rage at Bush for having cost them everything.
Bush’s war may have helped to kill off “America”. We could be in for a ten year depression, folks. I have never seen economists so scared before. And I’ve never seen Republicans like Sen. Voinovich stepping out of the grumbling sidelines and actually speaking truth.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pmThere are going to be a great number of the “Lesser” Republicans jumping off that dead horse in the middle of the stream. Republicans have written off McSame and any hope for the Presidency or 34% of the House. They are now just trying to maintain greater than 33 Senate seats so they can filibuster any bill that comes to a vote. Hillary and Obama should forget about campaigning against each other and forget about McCain as the major thrust of their efforts. They should be campaigning against every local Republican fron senator on down to the School Board where ever they are. The Dems have a chance to put the Repukes away for the forseeable future. It is the Media that insists a Democratic party split is inevitable if Hillary and Obama continue their own sparring. The only problem the media does not recognize is that their insistance upon a Party Split may just lead to a new two Party System where instead of democrats and Rethuglicans we will have Democrats and Democrats Too.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pmAnyone that looks at the history of the United States knows that this country is a war looking for a place to happen.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pmAs the curtain raises, there stands the ‘pearl harbor event’.
Unfortunately, this country is bankrupt in more ways than monetarily, and you helped put it there, Voinovich.

Awww, c’mon BH. You know Condi’s been really busy. Really busy trying to have a bigger shoe collection than Imelda Marcos.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:31 pmIt’s not surprising to me that a republican (or any republican for that matter) is in complete agreement with Osama bin Laden.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pmIs he up for re-election this year? ‘Cause that’s the only reason he would agree with a (shudder) Democrat.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:50 pmI love listening to Frightwing radio. THEY ARE SCARED SHIITLESS OF EVERYTHING:
April 8th, 2008 at 9:55 pmPresident Obama
The Shiites
AL Kieda
The left, OHHH the left
The glorious future as laid out in the PNAC
The blowback that will include their necks in nooses come nov.
It is GREAT to call and just play into their fear.
Ramp it up, and up, and up, to the point that they are so ridiculous that it is evident to even a painting on a wall.
I say make ALL rethugnikkkans retake their oaths to the country, and RENOUNCE their allegiances to the GOP. And then stick a FCUKING fork in the GOP because IT IS DONE. PERIOD.
Our bankruptsy is whats got us into this mess in the first place !
April 8th, 2008 at 10:00 pmWhat else can you call the condition of a country willing to trade decadent comforts for human misery . Witness 50 years of AMerican policy in the 3rd world , dictatorships , death squads , assassination of democratically elected leaders , toppling other democracies in this hemisphere as well as globally , and profitting handsomely as the largest supplier of military hardware whereever violence has gained momentum .
The sovereign government of Chile was overthrown on september 11 ,911 1973 , it’s president murdered by American foreign policy and 30 000 of it’s citizens tortured to death with the help of Henry Kisssinger and the CIA’ds acting director H W bush our presidents father .Has the US ever officially apologized for destroying Chile on 911 ?
The irony of 911 will be ENDLESSLY remembered in the future, if we are still around to scribble in history books and there is one .
Look inside the answer will not come from a politician !
April 8th, 2008 at 10:04 pm911 is the day the USA overthrew the government of Chile .
April 8th, 2008 at 10:23 pmAfter Petraeus and Crocker finshed their testimony, Senator Voinovich got a phone call from Bush :
April 8th, 2008 at 10:24 pm“Voinovich, either you are with us or against us”…
Kinda depends on your definition of kinda–or bankrupting. Isn’t he a Senator? Like, shouldn’t he know the facts at this point? You are either part of the solution or part of the problem and too many of our great elected class are a big part of the problem. Why do people keep voting for these idiots? Because they spend huge money to lie to us on the TV and most people believe it.

Now you know why I never voted for this nutcase. Dewine is no better, he has been on Voinvich’s coattails for years.
We had to listen to that rethoric the entire time he was governor. Made me want to leave OHIO. But we currently have a great Democrat Governor now. Everything is back to normal now.

April 8th, 2008 at 11:08 pmThe quote I didn’t hear was “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings”….But, it clearly was being said by the General.

For those who missed todays trollfest, it seems that the stakes are going up. Multiple threats of violence, porn links and plenty of other despicable shenanigans. I strongly urge you all to be VERY selective about links from “non-regulars”. There’s no telling what kind of infections the punks might try to unleash.
G’night good people.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:40 pmYou too trolls.
Is it possible that the dead Bin Laden is playing the West like a fiddle, from his grave?
April 9th, 2008 at 12:20 am>I strongly urge you all to be VERY selective about links >from “non-regulars”.
on a PC running explorer (sorry, Jesus loves macs but he doesnt lay his clumsy hands on them), right click on the linked text, and scroll down to “properties” in the box that pops up and you can see the url they are directing you to without actually going there..
April 9th, 2008 at 1:42 am>”We’re kinda bankrupting”
Jesus H Christ…”kinda”? Is it too much to ask the people who are supposed to be representing our country to speak well? It truly pains me to think that my tax dollars are going to fund the paycheck of someone who says things that would be more fittingly used by a 15 year old girl explaining how much she likes the guy down the block. Whats he going to do next, push a resolution that says Ben Ladeln is “totally” gay?
April 9th, 2008 at 1:48 amVoinovich: I think bin Laden is saying, ‘We’re kinda bankrupting this country.’
April 9th, 2008 at 2:54 amBin Laden only????!!!!!! Is he the only one saying that??? Look around Sir!!!! I think you are missing some of the american people and the rest of the World population!
Chocolate Jesus… thanks for the ‘property right click tip’!
April 9th, 2008 at 2:57 amOsama bin Laden stated that his goal was to bankrupt the United States. This was the strategy and outcome of engaging the Russians in Afghanistan. I wonder if we saw the truth of the real front we fight on whether we would all come together to get out.
April 9th, 2008 at 9:18 amVoinovich unfortunately is Ohio’s version of Arlen Specter. He sometimes talks like he knows what is going on then usually votes in lockstep with the party. His term ends in ‘10 I believe and word is he wants to run one more time. I suspect that has a lot to do with his comments. By the way northern Ohioans, please remember that George was mayor of Cleveland before moving on the governor then the senate. Can’t blame the southern part of the state for this one (unlike Taft, Dewine, etc.).
April 9th, 2008 at 9:28 amOsama Bin Laden released a tape shortly before 9-11 where he stated that his goal was to bankrupt the US. He told our leaders what he intended to do and they ignored it. I blame the Republicans for the mess we are in today. They let the neocons run the show, and look what we have to show for it. The neocons want war with Iran next.
I caucased for Kucinich. He continues to be proven correct. Thank God (if there is one) for Kucinch and Feingold.
April 9th, 2008 at 11:08 amBin Laden knows he’s bankrupting the USA, all togheter with his family’s best pal, GWB.
April 9th, 2008 at 11:38 amIraq invasion and occupation has played right into the hands of Osama. Thanks GOPigs.

well, it worked before against the Soviet Union. Lightning CAN strike twice.
