Last October, conservatives, led by David Horowitz, held Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week “to educate students and other Americans about the ‘cadre of Islamic terrorists‘ who ‘have declared Holy War on the U.S.’” The week of events was widely mocked, but that hasn’t stopped it from making an early return. As Josh Marshall notes today, “October’s IAW was such a good fundraising tool” that Horowitz has “decided to make this week Islamofascism Awareness Week too.”
That’s fine.
I’ve officially designated the entire year of 2008 as XianFascist Awareness Year.

Not to be confused with:

If this week’s the official “islamofascism week” then next week needs to be “christofascism week”, right???
April 9th, 2008 at 11:42 amIf only every week could be Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week what a wonderfully hate-filled world it would be.

April 9th, 2008 at 11:44 am1. There is NO such thing as “islamo-fascism”
2. It is a figment of the ferved imagination of the neo-con Nazis at the AEI- a modern “boogeyman” made up to scare the bejeebus out of Americans in order to get public support for their neo-Nazi agenda.

April 9th, 2008 at 12:01 pmSomebody should tell these right-wing knuckleheads that all self-proclaimed fascists throughout history have been Christians. I doubt there are many Muslims who have ever even heard of, or understand the concept of fascism.

Well, you do understand that this is simply a fundraising event to promote the killing of brown people. They aren’t selling the shirts, but a donation to the RNC or to your favorite bloodthirsty, right-wing extremist authoritarian Republican candidate is appreciated.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:13 pmI guess because O’Reilly didn’t do his usual “they’re waging a war against the Easter bunny” shtick this spring they needed something to make the season more “festive”.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:14 pmIslamo-Fascism Awareness Week seems to come earlier every year. If this keeps up, it’s going to start to interfere with the War on Christmas.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:21 pmQuestion: How do you say “boo” to a neocon?
Answer: Fascism.
I’d love to see a survey of the average Republican on the street giving a definition of “fascism”. I’d bet most would give an definition that is synonymous with “terrorism”. “Fascism” sounds scary, forget about what it atually means.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:26 pmIf there’s to be an “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week” and we then have a “Christo-Fascism Awareness Week” should we then follow that up with a “Zionist-Fascism Awareness Week”? We wouldn’t want them to feel left out! (Oh no – she didn’t go there, did she?)
Doug Feith’s father:
April 9th, 2008 at 12:27 pm“Before he immigrated to the United States during World War II, Dalck Feith was a militant member of Betar, a Zionist youth movement founded by Ze’ev Jabotinsky, an admirer of Mussolini. Betar, whose members wore dark brown uniforms and spouted militaristic slogans modeled after other fascistic movements, was associated with the Revisionist Movement, which evolved in Poland to become the Herut Party, which later became the Likud Party.”
What does one buy their significant other for Islamo-Facism Awareness week? Perhaps a copy of Fitna? Man, Islamo-Facism Awareness week has become so commercialized recently.

April 9th, 2008 at 12:30 pmIf Mussolini were still alive, he would have both Jonah Goldberg and David Horowitz shot for misusing the term for the ideology and the form of government he invented.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:30 pmI’m sick and tired of all of these “Put Israel first” Jews attack us for not wanting to give all of our hard earned money to them. What’s they people like Horowitz are such right wing nuts. They care about one thing and one thing only, and this Israel. I have nothing personal against Jews or Israel, in fact I’d personally fight to defend it. But I’m an American first and no country’s best interest comes before my own. These so called conservative Jews are saying this garbage because they feel it helps Israel.
This man and other Jews like Jonah Goldberg and Bernard Goldberg of HBO like to use scare tactics to bull_hit us into giving even more money that we already to to Isreal and Jewish causes there. They would sell America out for the sake of Israel even thought they are supposedly Americans. I’m glad that they have pride in Israel, but we don’t need each ethnic group trying to get money for their ancestrial homeland. That would mean that people whose family came from Ireland, Poland, Germany, France, England, Africa, Mexico, would all try to create some scare tactic to get America to give money and support based on crap.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pmI believe that the United States should defend Israel and provide it with the military assistance they need to fight against their enemies. But I’m not about to put our best interest on hold to do it. It’s time we stood up and said NO to this facist.

I agree. Most Israelis are not warmongering Likudniks. According to recent surveys, a majority of Israelis want dialogue with Hamas. Unfortunately, the Rapture-Ready crowd of Christian Zionists only sees Israel/Palestine as the setting for their Left Behind fantasies. They don’t care about the actual people who live there.

fascism n a philosophy or system of government that advocates or exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with an ideology of beliigerent nationalism

Well I want to hear all the names of other organization’s not related to the Islamic faith that threaten this country.
How about the various right-wing militias.
The Militia Movement
Origins: Mid-to-late 1993
Prominent leaders: John Trochmann (Montana), Ron Gaydosh (Michigan), Randy Miller (Texas), Charlie Puckett (Kentucky), Mark Koernke (Michigan), Carl Worden (Oregon), Gib Ingwer (Ohio)
Prominent groups: Kentucky State Militia, Ohio Unorganized Militia Assistance and Advisory Committee, Southeastern Ohio Defense Force, Michigan Militia (two factions using the same name), Southern Indiana Regional Militia, Southern California High Desert Militia-and many others
Outreach: Gun shows, shortwave radio, newsletters, the Internet
Ideology: Anti-government and conspiracy-oriented in nature; prominent focus on firearms
Prominent militia arrests: Multiple members of the following groups have been arrested and convicted, usually on weapons, explosives, or conspiracy charges: Oklahoma Constitutional Militia, Georgia Republic Militia, Arizona Viper Militia, Washington State Militia, West Virginia Mountaineer Militia, Twin Cities Free Militia, North American Militia, San Joaquin County Militia.
The militia movement is a relatively new right-wing extremist movement consisting of armed paramilitary groups, both formal and informal, with an anti-government, conspiracy-oriented ideology. Militia groups began to form not long after the deadly standoff at Waco, Texas, in 1993; by the spring of 1995, they had spread to almost every state. Many members of militia groups have been arrested since then, usually on weapons, explosives and conspiracy charges. Although the militia movement has declined in strength from its peak in early 1996, it remains an active movement, especially in the Midwest, and continues to cause a number of problems for law enforcement and the communities in which militia groups are active.

What the tighty-righties are trying to tell us is simply that everything bad is fascist.
Those old, specific definitions of “fascism” that delineate characteristic points of fascism (many of which, coincidentally, line up quite well with right-wing ideology), those are out. They’re outdated. Pre-9/11 thinking, you might say.
Nope, if we’re going to defeat this new type of enemy, we have to be able to label it. How can we whip up support for jingoism if we can’t slap wicked labels on those we disagree with?
In the face of these propagandistic needs, “fascism” demands to be redefined.
