The AP reports that Col. Stephen Scott “died Sunday during a mortar attack on facilities inside the protected Green Zone in Baghdad, which houses the U.S. Embassy. Only the ninth soldier of his rank to have been killed in the Iraq war, he is one of the conflict’s highest-ranking casualties.” Colonel “appears to be the highest rank of any U.S. military deaths in the Iraq war,” and “at least eight other Army or Army Reserve colonels have died in the now-5-year-old war.”
What a crying shame. All for the greed of a crime family of thugs. God Bless his family and friends.

April 10th, 2008 at 1:34 pmAn officer is killed by a mortar attack in the Green Zone.
Someone explain to me again how the Surge is Working™?
April 10th, 2008 at 1:35 pmThis war is a disgrace. What a shameful waste of life.
April 10th, 2008 at 1:35 pmYou can thank your buddies in the White House for that one and the other 4000 plus.
April 10th, 2008 at 1:39 pmWonder why more officers aren’t killed in the line of duty like the Israeli army? No wonder involved. Israeli officers are in the front. Ours are in the rear in the safest spot in Iraq getting killed.
Someone has to surge, and America’s way is to put “grunts out front” You know, cannon fodder, target practice, seek and destroy.
Our military leaders are incompetent boobs now, those are the only ones willing to work for the idiot king and his handler. Wonder what Wes Clark thinks about his former subordinates now facing war crimes tribunals? Wonder how he feels about Colin Powell being an advocate of torture and having to go to the Hague?
time to end this farce.

ask Exlexia or Kilotwatt
April 10th, 2008 at 1:42 pmAnother unquestionably terrible loss.
Seems to me that this news may have been held up until after Petraeus and Crocker’s testimony.

April 10th, 2008 at 1:43 pmAndrew Sullivan Is A Fraud
Mortar (not rocket) attacks targeting joggers (the other day) and now a high-ranking colonel. Sounds like the Green Zone is becoming more and more mapped out regarding target coordinates.
NOT a good sign . . . very similar to the base security problems in Viet Nam.
April 10th, 2008 at 1:50 pm.
I note that everyone refers to the “War” in Iraq. I think they should talk more plainly, or perhaps more honestly. Referring to acccurate definitions of terms, a “War” is engaged in between two or more ARMIES, one representing the Nation on whose territory operations are being conducted, and another, who is performing the operations. What we had in Iraq was NEVER a WAR! We committed an act of aggression contrary to INTERNATIONAL LAW AND OUR SOLEMN TREATY OBLIGATIONS, properly considered to be an INVASION. Ever since, we have had an OCCUPATION, rightly resisted by “Freedom Fighters” and “Patriots” whom we miscall “INSURGENTS.” Just because it is OUR side, it is not necessarily the RIGHT side! The whole shemozzle was contrary to International Law, and ANYONE taking part in it is IPSO FACTO a War Criminal, and prosecutable under International Law; and, by extension, the Legislative Body supplying the funds to maintain this illegal operation is guilty of being accessories before, during, and after the fact of the Criminal Act. But who is going to bring charges against the Congress of the US? Well, it’s worth thinking about.

Do not question the surge: IT is always working and therefore it is always a success.

April 10th, 2008 at 1:57 pmBut But, isn’t the Green Zone even SAFER than the markets that Johnnie Boy and the other repugs are always talking about and strolling down in their flak vests and hundreds of armed gurads around them? Why are we not surprised that the death will continue as long as we are illegally (and immorally) occupying a sovereign nation?
HMMMM!
April 10th, 2008 at 1:57 pmmy question is.
when are they going to grease some flag officers?
April 10th, 2008 at 1:59 pmOr…should that be fragged officers?
Green and red makes purple. It’s the purple zone.
April 10th, 2008 at 2:04 pmAnother life lost,what a shame!
April 10th, 2008 at 2:05 pmI wonder if that prick-,head from North Carolina, the Republican Rep.Patrick McHenry was partly responsible for the Colonels death?
After all he was showing a video to a group of his sycophants, taken inside the Green Zone, showing where he claims he was rocketed or mortared, and then telling them how brave he was!
The Pentagon ordered him not to show the video anymore, cause it might help the militias with their aiming of rockets/mortars!
What a dick-head!
anyone know how many rugs i can get for 5 dollars in iraq these days?
April 10th, 2008 at 2:05 pmWhile keeping the numbers of Colonels lost in the Iraq war fairly small we have sustained a great many losses of those ranked lower…..in addition, many of our best Generals have “Retired” and that is to be taken as a loss too because it leaves us with nothing but the bootlickers.
April 10th, 2008 at 2:11 pmHow come TP always gets saddled with the lame nonsensical trolls?

Since the death occurred on Sunday and Betrayus and CrockOf$shit ended their testimony yesterday, I think that’s a safe assumption.

He not only showed it to his friends, he had the video posted on his website for all the world to see.
April 10th, 2008 at 2:19 pmI know, it’s kind of an insult to us that we get the bottom of the barrel trolls.
The good news is that TP is getting much better at cleaning up the troll dung around here. Unfortunately as quickly as they ban them, they are back with a new ID. Until they ban trolls by their IP address, they will have their work cut out for them.
April 10th, 2008 at 2:20 pmI would imagine we’re not going to see a lot of politicians barnstorming Baghdad anytime soon. Going to be tough on Republicans, especially, if they can’t get photo ops shopping for rugs leading up to the November election.

The fact of the matter is there are no “good” trolls. The people who will sit down in front of their computer and post to blogs for pay are by definition the bottom of the barrel.
April 10th, 2008 at 2:21 pmNow that’s cute… a troll playing the victim. The sad kitten eyes with huge irises don’t really work for trolls.

April 10th, 2008 at 2:36 pm“When can we leave”?
When we win.
“How will we know we’ve won”?
We don’t know.
“Isn’t that crazy”?
Yes.
“Well then, shouldn’t we define winning”?
That would just embolden our enemies.
That’s pretty funny coming from the right, you know the guys who have the religious nuts in Texas abusing children by the hundreds.
Too bad you guys don’t have a basic understanding of what family life is about. It’s just something you say, like trying to project your evil propensities onto liberals.

I’m sorry that Col Scott was killed and I hope that his family will be ok, they are in my prayers. It’s a sad thing that he had to die for what will turn out to be nothing. In the end when we leave Iraq, the United States just as in Viet Nam will have lost thousands of troops, tens of thousand wounded, and we will not have anything to show for it. Fools who support war have never been in a war. If they had, they wouldn’t be so quick to want to go to war. People get horribly killed and wounded beyond what average civlians can understand. They don’t know what it’s like to see the top of a friends head blown off or and enemy soldier’s gut hanging out. Or what it smells like when a body has been rotting in the sun or too long and it smells like a rotting dog.
Those who have seen and smelled death know what I’m talking about. The rest of the chicken hawks who support this war are stupid idiots who would cry if they say what I’ve seen. I’ll bet they couldn’t go home and eat dinner after seeing and smell a ripe body. Just think about seeing all that blood and guts, brains, etc. The human body was just not mean to be destroyed like that. I still get sick to my stomach sometimes when I can’t stop thinking about seeing a man’s body split completely in two and the guts, bones, and other mangled parts just sitting there.
