Bush granted Kristol advance preview of Iraq speech.

In a Weekly Standard column published today, conservative columnist William Kristol reveals that President Bush invited him over to the White House to “preview the Iraq speech he’s giving today.” Kristol breaks the rules of journalistic ethics in order to emphasize Bush’s grieving during Tuesday’s Medal of Honor ceremony and paint a hagiographic picture of the President:

I’ll violate the off-the-record rules in order to convey the tenor of the president’s lengthy response. He explained how difficult it had been for him to keep his composure. … And he had a certain amount of steel in his voice when he then reiterated his determination not to allow the sacrifices of our fighting men and women to have been made in vain.

    - - Geeze, George, all you had to do was squat down over a toilet and Kristol would have squeezed out from between your cheeks.

  4. pax Says:

Oh please!!! We the American people can see through all of his theatrics! We are not stupid. Kristol is a self-serving traitor posing as a journalist.
I have made a bumper sticker for my car that says NO MORE REPUBLICANS!

are you serious? do you REALLY believe all this is magically gonna get repaired in Jan '09? does ANYONE really believe this? I got some Bear Stearns stock I'd like to sell ya...

"reiterated his determination not to allow the sacrifices of our fighting men and women to have been made in vain."

If Bush knew invading Iraq was right he would never need to feel like there lives were given in vain.

It kind of says it all.

  8. anonymousryan Says:

The ridiculous thing about "to not allow the sacrifices of our fighting men and women to have been made in vain" is that most troops in Iraq and Afghanistan don't care about the mission anymore, they're there fighting for each other because they can't stand the thought of coming home when their brethren are dying overseas. So Bush will continue asking for sacrifices from our fighting men and women, but from no one else- because asking for a sacrifice from every American would only further turn the tide against the war. Furthermore, he surely won't ask the military contractors to sacrifice massive profits by providing cost effective, quality products, services, and aid to our fighting men and women, which I suppose is just another sacrifice our fighting men and women have to make.

Even short of bringing them home there are hundreds of measures he could pursue to make things better for our troops overseas and when they come home, but he won't. It's like a millionaire saying, "I was distraught when my grandmother died of cancer, but she didn't have the money to pay for proper treatment."

Too late. The Iraq adventure will go down in history as folly but shame will prevent a discussion of how much American blood has been shed in this vain attempt by bush to be relevant.

America will regret the compacency which allowed this to happen.

  10. Bullsmith Says:

So now the US has to stay in Iraq because the thought of leaving makes Bush cry?

  11. WaltinTexas Says:

Bush 'crying' over a soldier killed in Iraq is like the Romans crying over the Christians they just threw to the lions.

William Kristol is so brave! He violates the very rules of journalism in order to paint a loving portrait of a man he so admires. How very touching and what a load of crap. William Kristol is violating the rules of journalism, but not the ones he claims. He is acting in the role of a spokesperson for the White House rather than as a reporter covering the White House. Pathetic.

  15. rmwarnick Says:

Who made Bill Kristol a "journalist"?

    Magically??? no.
    in Jan '09 ??? no.

But I hope repairs will start. I hope we'll be going in the right direction. Taking care of the obvious is never a bad first move. Fatalism fixes nothing. It's not like the bad apples aren't obvious.

  18. robertoroberto Says:

The phonetic spelling allowed both Kristol and Bush to fully understand the words in the speech.

So what you are saying is that in 2001 this country did not "magically" change direction to get us into the nightmare we are living today?

So what you are saying is that when the democrats regain control of the presidency and both houses of congress that they will not work to restore or economy from the damage done by the malicious republicans who have been hard at work for 7 years?

So what you are saying is that the democrats will not address our domestic concerns instead of taking us to war against a drummed up evil tyrant by saying he was going to attack us "imminantly"?

So what you are saying is that the democrats will not work to improve the health care crisis that the republicans created for profit?

    etc.

I think you are a defeatist or not really paying attention to the differences between the parties......

What the difference between Monica Lewinsky and Bill Kystol?

But they HAVE died in vain; aWol's vanity.

  22. gummitch Says:

Kristol is, of course, too stupid to realize he's being played like a gong. As he left the White House, his heart filled with patriotism and pride, because the President has chosen him to open his heart up to, the Bush staff was rolling on the floor of the Oval Office, wiping away tears of laughter. Bill Kristol, tool.

  23. regular_joe Says:

[Bush] explained how difficult it had been for him to keep his composure...

This little canard would be more believable if it were about Bush admitting that he often struggles to keep a straight face...

This war has been based on lies from its conception. If Bush had the slightest regard for the sacrifices of our fighting men and women, then he would NEVER have sent them to die for a lie.

  24. RUCerious Says:

Yes, I'm dead ass serious, that I can't wait until this moron is OUT OF OFFICE and can't DO any more damage.
Where did I say anything about how FU(KING long it's going to take to repair all this shit?

  27. lokidog Says:

Kristol mentions the "steel" in Bush's voice, but I wonder if he meant to refer to a "steel" plate in Bush's head - how else to explain the lunacy of the last 7 years?

  28. pete Says:

This November the American people have an opportunity. By sweeping neocons out of office we can tell the world: "We're sorry. We won't let it happen again".

Unless, and until, we do that our fortunes will continue to plummet. It's not a cure. It's not a guarantee. But, it's the best, first, step in restoring honor to ourselves and our nation.

Ah yes, however, when it comes to their right to VOTE uh, not so much determination is given.

  32. Freedom Rebel Says:

I wonder how many people worked on that speech to help make him sound convincing?? I get it, He was method acting in front of Kristol to see if he was coming off emotional enough. "And he had a certain amount of steel in his voice" Definitely method-acting...

  37. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

tokin accuses us of magical thinking? How about the magically changing votes, magically disappeared WMD, magical success in Iraq, magical money for funding without taxes, magical terror alerts when there was political danger, etc.? Bush is probably a graduate of Hogwarts, not Harvard.

  40. GeeDubs Says:

And by all means, let's sacrifice MORE men and women on the pyre of Iraq so that the previous sacrifies won't be in vain. How long does THAT madness go on???

  41. mary Says:

Bush began planning his mis-adventure re: Iraq right after his inaugeration in January of 2001. Would it not be unreasonable to expect that whomever takes over on January of 2008 begins the process of repairing the damage Bush and friends have wrought right after THEIR inaugeration?

“From the very beginning, there was a conviction, that Saddam Hussein was a bad person and that he needed to go,” says (Paul) O’Neill, who adds that going after Saddam was topic "A" 10 days after the inauguration - eight months before Sept. 11.

“From the very first instance, it was about Iraq. It was about what we can do to change this regime,” says Suskind. “Day one, these things were laid and sealed.”
