Last month, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) repeatedly and falsely claimed that Iran brought Sunni militants into Iran for training in order to launch attacks in Iraq. The Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire notes that at a recent press conference, Petraeus “gently” refuted this assertion:
[A] reporter asked the commander if he believed Iran was supporting Sunni militants inside Iraq or had any evidence establishing such a link.
“I’m not aware of – it doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened,” Petraeus replied, choosing his words carefully.
He said that some Sunni extremists had weapons that were made in Iran, but said that it was unclear if the weapons were provided by Tehran.
“It is a good bit more difficult to connect all the dots directly,” he said.

April 10th, 2008 at 2:38 pmSome of al-Sadr’s militia members were using American made Humvees in Basra a week or so ago. Can Peaches say with any certainty that the US is not training Shiite insurgents?
April 10th, 2008 at 2:39 pmHe said that some Sunni extremists had weapons that were made in Iran, but said that it was unclear if the weapons were provided by Tehran.
Many extremists have weapons that were made in America. It is unclear if they were provided by Washington or just left lying around somewhere for anyone to pick up.
April 10th, 2008 at 2:41 pmMy goodness. Isn’t it obvious? The US is trianing the shiite militias and arming them to the teeth so they can keep the population in check. Then, they will claim that these same militias are being armed by Iran. This will give pretense for the Iranian invasion. Why on Micheal Moore’s green earth would Shiite Iran be arming a Sunni insurgency group? What you can say is that Saudi Arabia IS arming Al Queda. Albeit with weapons transferred over under the arms deals put in place last year for among others Saudi Arabia, Israel and Egypt.

April 10th, 2008 at 2:56 pmI don’t find it believable that our top brass knows so very little about the situation. If one gives full credit to our capabilities militarily and technologically it is impossible that we could be there so long and have so little knowledge of the theater and the players. There is no legitimate excuse for it.
Bushco would have us believe that despite our unmatched supremacy on Earth, we are just not quite able to get a handle on the situation. Either Bushco is lying or we have pissed away every dollar ever budgeted to the DoD, and I for one, would never insult our military and national security professionals by suggesting that.

3)Was the reporter looking for a confirmation or denial from Petraeus to support McCain’s repeated claims?.
4)Haven’t the claims been utterly debunked already? Why continue with the line of questioning?
5) For over a year Petraeus has done NOTHING to dissuade senior subordinates from claiming Iran-AQ and Iran-Sunni links and support.

Wingnut blogosphere: The moon truly IS made of green cheese, which we can prove in a kind of Kevin Bacon six degrees of separation way.
Reporter to Petraeus: Do you believe the moon is made of green cheese?

Following the heavy media coverage of the sermons, a CBS poll found that sixty-five percent of registered voters said it didn’t make a difference in their view of Obama, while thirty percent said it made them have a less favorable view.[15] The polling occurred prior to Obama’s speech on the subject.

April 10th, 2008 at 4:33 pmI think a majority of Americans are also that stupid and we’ll find out when the Swift Boat captains set sail in the general election.
Dream on stupid troll. They can swift boat all they want. Problem is that Obama isn’t going to allow them to get away with it the way that Kerry did. I do believe that Americans are voting that they really don’t care that Obama’s pastor said maybe five stupid things in 30 years of preaching.
So, suck it up and plan on being very unhappy for the next 8 years because if Obama lives long enough, he will be the next President of the United States. The only thing he has to fear is nut cases like you.

The host, a certifiable Reichwing psycho-Christian, was not amused.
Now, I have things to do. Fight the good fight people. Later.
April 10th, 2008 at 4:39 pmThat was Jan. 3, 2008 – so why the new story line now?
Because Bush is getting ready to “bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”. Now that Bush has gotten rid of Fallon who had vowed to stop Bush from invading Iran, Bush is ready to do the unthinkable.
Personally, if there ever was a time in history where Congress needed to act and start impeachment proceedings, now is it. If they don’t impeach Chaney and Bush, this country is going to be in an even bigger world of hurt come January, 2009.
April 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pmwe’ll all just conveniently disregard John McCain himself calling his own Wife a “c*nt” in public, in front of reporters

April 10th, 2008 at 5:09 pm>if there ever was a time in history where Congress needed to >act and start impeachment proceedings.
hey man…im in total agreement that this dude deserves impeachment 1000 times over, but keep in mind, we had to fight like h3ll (and its still not over for sure) just to keep telecom immunity from getting passed, and the lockstep republican congress is supposedly in the majority.
you have to remember, at least half the democrats are paid off, blackmailed, or spineless. the fact our dear senator leader reid simply rolled over and agreed to require 60 votes for everything, without forcing the republicans to actually fillibuster ANYTHING, is proof of this.. chris i would LOVE to see the republicans dare to actually fillibuster the bill to give GI’s college money..
while there are some dems in congress that will stand up and do the right thing, unforunately there isnt even enough of them to sucessfully filibuster, let alone a majority
i think the democrats are going with the “lets give bush enough rope to hang himself” strategy, which, arguably, isnt the worst of ideas, given how much of an idiot the guy is. only problem right now is that bushies are doing a decent job of damage control such that i believe they will, unfortuately, largely succeed in putting the majority of the blame for the last 8 years on the shoulders of the new president..
