In a new interview with NBC News set to air tonight, Gen. David Petraeus rules out a run for elected office:
WILLIAMS: General, will you ever hold political office in this country?
PETRAEUS: Never. And I’ve tried to say that on a number of occasions. Some folks have reminded me of a country western song that says “what part of no, don’t you understand?”
Hear that? It’s the sound of K-Lo and Bill Kristol’s hearts breaking.

However, when asked if he’d accept the nomination for the Supreme Court, he shouted “How’d you find out! That’s supposed to be a goddamn secret!”
April 10th, 2008 at 6:42 pmI wonder what part of honesty and integrity he does understand.
Right. None.
April 10th, 2008 at 6:45 pmat least he and convicted fraudster chalabi will always be “BFF’s”
April 10th, 2008 at 6:45 pmIf he did run for Preznit, I bet he would still wear his uniform. I’m looking at you Hayden!
April 10th, 2008 at 6:46 pmWhy on earth would anybody think Petraeus could be President. He got his job after others started telling the truth and wouldn’t lie anymore. Petraeus is doing what he’s told by the White House and could care less about the troops. Even the troops call him a sell out. I guess Gates will be the next choice or bring back Tentet or even lying Powell.
April 10th, 2008 at 6:51 pmYeah, but… he’s a Republican. So you can’t trust a thing he says.
April 10th, 2008 at 6:59 pmsorry O/T:
Cheney, others OK’d harsh interrogations
WASHINGTON - Bush administration officials from Vice President Dick Cheney on down signed off on using harsh interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists after asking the Justice Department to endorse their legality, The Associated Press has learned.
The officials also took care to insulate President Bush from a series of meetings where CIA interrogation methods, including waterboarding, which simulates drowning, were discussed and ultimately approved.
A former senior U.S. intelligence official familiar with the meetings described them Thursday to the AP to confirm details first reported by ABC News on Wednesday. The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the issue.

April 10th, 2008 at 7:04 pmIndeed, what has Petreaus done that is presidential? He moved up into a position of notoriety because he would say what the administration wanted when all the officers in front of him wouldn’t.
That makes him presidential?
I guess to wingnuts it would, them always searching for a big, strong authoritarian daddy figure, and all.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:04 pmWe all seem to agree here - Petraeus is where he is because he was willing to be a Bush boot-licker. He spent two years in a failed attempt to train Iraqis. He came to the states for two years and was returned to Iraq when several other generals quit or were relieved of duty because they couldn’t take Bush&Co any more. I think that’s how he earned his fourth star.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:10 pmThat could last until, say, 2010.
Or, he could be serious because he knows that Iraq will most likely turn out poorly and sink whatever chances he may have had.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:10 pmWell thank heavens for that. Can you imagine the country being ran as terribly as this war is being handled? Oh, umm, yeah, I guess you just have to look around. It ain’t pretty.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:15 pmOur commander on the ground in Iraq must have been an ardent student and supporter of General Westmoreland his stewardship of Vietnam. I expect he’ll be remembered in the same light
April 10th, 2008 at 7:18 pmIf we only had six more months we cud lik’em.

Whew! That’s one nightmare we don’t have to look forward to.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:05 pmbetter save those quotes so you can pull them out in 8 years.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:09 pm.
a little less than threadworthy, this.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:12 pmEisenhower tended to be a decent president. Of course, he had been the Supreme Commander of allied forces in Europe during WWII. He learned to balance difficult multi-national alliances often taking positions contrary to US wishes to strengthen that alliance. Petraeus would be more in the mold of Grant as president considering the amount of corruption that he has presided over.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:14 pmHe should be jail! Surge my-ass, PETRAEUS the “yes” man of the Iraq war. I served in Vietnam, we surged for 18 years, and 58,000 brave souls, this Iraqi war is starting to smell, just like Vietnam.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:38 pmPatraeus? For president?! Who’s the stupid idiot who thought of that disaster?
April 10th, 2008 at 8:41 pmGeneral Betrayus: “What part of this IS a political office I am currently holding do you not understand?”

sorry O/T:
Cheney, others OK’d harsh interrogations
There is no better way to make some friends.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:53 pmOh, goodness. We dodged a bullet here, didn’t we? (snark off)
April 10th, 2008 at 10:08 pm…He wouldn’t have a chance! No body likes to be lied to!
April 10th, 2008 at 11:13 pmOh, darn.
April 10th, 2008 at 11:58 pmHis army career takes a sharp turn jan 20 of next year. Without the chimp as his patron the brass at the pentagon are going to promote the disliked Betrayus to emperor of Greenland until he retires.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:00 amFew would actually vote for a dude that looks like he does. Myself I wouldn’t vote for him for other more cerebral reasons but I am sorry but a lot of folks are less inclined and this dude just doesn’t have the “look”.
April 11th, 2008 at 1:02 amSince when is an active general considered a candidate for partisan office? This goes completely against the grain of military tradition.
April 11th, 2008 at 4:01 amI repeatedly noted that we haven’t turned any corners, we haven’t seen any lights at the end of the tunnel. The champagne bottle has been pushed to the back of the refrigerator.
- General P, 4/7/08
Doesn’t look good on a resume when running for President.
April 11th, 2008 at 6:25 amBill Kristol has a heart? You sure about that?
