Randi Rhodes to reportedly move to Clear Channel.

After a recent disagreement over her comments about Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), host Randi Rhodes resigned from Air America. According to an e-mail received by Hot Air, Rhodes is about to sign a deal to broadcast on Clear Channel:

randirhodes.jpg She’s going to be signing a deal with Nova M Radio in the next few hours for about the same money Air America was paying her. She will broadcast Monday afternoon on all Clear Channel affiliates and several other stations. The folks at Air America don’t miss her one bit… She has moved from New York City to West Palm Beach, FL…

They’ve been planning since she was suspended but the deal is solid now…

FishbowlLA is reporting that Rhodes may join Green960 AM in San Francisco.

Will she be appearing on the Howard Stern show?

Hmmmm. Interesting. I’d love to fly this one by all the eejits who insist that liberal/progressive radio doesn’t make any money.

If progressive radio is a losing proposition, why on earth would Clear Channel (that bastion of conservative sensibility) hire Randi…?

Out of the goodness of their little hearts? I don’t think so!!

  3. PeterW says:

Randi Rhodes, I think, embodies the worst instincts of a progressive talker – to act like a conservative talker.

She’s less informed than her rivals, she’s abrasive, she talks over and shouts down her callers.

I think Clear Channel is a perfect home for her.

  4. Ike_Skelton says:

I used to listen to her and enjoy her (before Bush won the second election) but I’ve grown and come to realize she’s an idiot. I liked Air America when Al Franken was on it.

I don’t think Rhodes is poorly informed at all. On the contrary, she’s very well informed and able to piece things together. The rest, though, absolutely. I can’t listen to her.

I don’t find Randi uninformed, but I do find her often abrasive. About as close to a righty talker as we’ve got. I can’t listen to her for too long.

  9. PeterW says:

I should have said “less informed than her colleagues”.

“Rivals” would imply she’s less informed than Savage or O’Reilly, and I wouldn’t want to imply that.

  11. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Randi: you go girl! Randi Rhodes actually has some in-depth understanding of our political system and how perverted it has become under the Bush gangster regime in the 21st century. Nova M already has the brilliant Mike Malloy on the air (at 9 PM on 960 AM out in the SF Bay Area), so Randi would be a great addition. Air America Radio Network seems to have a lot of trouble with truly progressive radio hosts, so it ends up firing them. Air America’s loss is Nova M’s gain.

Maybe it’s just coming down from Thom Hartmann. I hope Seder sticks around as her replacement – he’s combative, but he’s far better than Rhodes at weaving threads together.

  14. RUCerious says:

Randi is fairly well informed, as a talk radio personality she is of course incredibly opinionated (a requirement), but that NY nasal razor voice drives me off the road after 14.6 seconds of exposure.

I listened to Randi, and enjoyed her show for about a week…. After that it’s just all the same thing all the time. Now, with any luck, our local Air America affiliate (KPOJ, Portland OR) will move Rachel Maddow to here rightful place at 3-6pm weekdays, instead of delaying Rachel until 6pm to play a delayed Randi show, which gets preempted by Ed Schultz in the noon-3 time slot. This would be a good thing, and I imagine would greatly increase KPOJ’s drivetime market share.

  17. jpopphan says:

I’m pretty much done with Air America. I bought an XM Radio subscription for the sole purpose of being able to listen to AA since there isn’t any longer an AA affiliate in Atlanta.

I loved Marc Maron, and they gave him the boot. I loved Rachael Maddow’s old morning show, which was dropped and replaced with Jerry Springer – a huge mistake. Then they took off Jerry and put Sam Seder on in the same time slot with this own fantastic show… only to drop Seder in favor of the UNLISTENABLE Lionel. Seder got shoved into one weekly show on Sundays and filling in for hosts when they are out; and to be sure, he’ll get kicked again when the AA execs find another mediocre talent like Lionel to replace the BRILLIANT Sam Seder. Now maybe Sam has another chance, but without Randi there isn’t really anything left for me at AA.

Some people accuse Randi of being “poorly informed” yet that is laughable; she’s more knowledgeable than practically any other radio host, on either side of the political divide. Sure, she’s bombastic and talks over some of her callers, but she is a TREASURE for the progressive movement and I hope that her departure from AA opens the doors for her in many other places. If she opens the door for progressive talk on some of these Clear Channel stations then good for her. She will be an asset to any network that hires her.

So, goodbye AA. Have fun with your new host, whoever it may be. Condolences to Sam Seder – who is so talented and deserves his own, daily show – because I just know that AA will screw him over again the first chance they get.

Apparently you have not spent any time listening to Randi Rhodes. I agree she can be abrasive and that sometimes she talks over her callers, but she is definitely the best informed and most knowledgeable talk show host on progressive radio other than, perhaps, Thom Hartmann.

Why don’t you just admit you don’t like Randi Rhodes. Because your saying she is the least informed shows that you don’t know what you are talking about.

  20. PeterW says:

#17, tell me with a straight face she’s more informed than Hartmann or Maddow. Seriously. Or the late-night hosts. Or even the TYT crowd (back when they were on AAR).

But in the spirit of coming together, we can both agree that Lionel is atrocious. Just godawful.

I don’t know what AAR was thinking ditching Seder for him. I didn’t catch Seder often (because that’s Stephanie Miller’s slot, and I need my daily dose of fart jokes before settling in to some Hartmann), but he was a very good host, which is why I hope he replaces Rhodes.

  24. nycbassist says:

Randi is definitely informed, and passionate. There’s no denying that.. but I stopped listening to her, on any regular basis a while ago. Her tone, when people call in is ugly and insulting. Even the liberal callers would get bashed and insulted. The most frustrating part of her show was when she’d get great guests on, and they couldn’t get two words in edgewise. Go to any archive of her show, and time how much the interviewee gets, in comparison to Randi. Why have guests on at all.

I really miss Marc Maron. I truly think that was the best show Air America ever had. So consistently funny and informative at the same time. You’d think with the new ownership, they’d find a way to get him back. Oh.. and please, Randi.. Take Lionel with you. What an ass!

  25. IALib says:

I have been an Air America listener since the beginning. It is too bad how poorly AAR management treats the on air talent. But, as a management person, I cannot imagine how challenging it might be to manage a group of independent thinking, opinionated individuals like Rhodes, Malloy and Seder.

I will continue to listen to progressive talk, whatever network it comes from. I hope Clear Channel broadcasts Randi all over the country so people can get a view beyond Limbaugh. This could be a very good thing for liberal talk radio.

It is concerning, if the Clinton machine has enough pull to get Randi (like David Schuster) off the air.

  26. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I expect that will happen and I agree about Sam. The three best assets that Air America has are Sam and Rachael Maddow and Thom Hartmann. I don’t listen to Air America, I do listen to KPOJ in Portland (an AA affiliate). But other than listening to Thom Hartmann daily, I will not be listening to anything that comes out of Air America except for some Saturday shows I like such as Laura Flanders and Ring of Fire.

Mark Green, President of Air America has been after Randi for quite some time because, like TP, he is a Hillary supporter. He apparently has encouraged his talk show hosts to remain neutral in the race (kind of like TP ignoring anything about Obama or Clinton) but Randi didn’t play along. I think Randi is much better off without Air America.

Air America is not living up to it’s potential. Hopefully some other form of organized progressive radio fills the breech that is being left by Air America. Perhaps L. Hussein Annie is correct. Stations like Clear Channel are realizing that there is money to be made out of Progressive talk and that audience is only going to get bigger once Obama is President and the Democrats control congress.

I guess you are not aware that many Clear Channel stations carry Air America and other liberal talk show hosts. This was from 2005:

WXDX-AM – now known as WDTW-AM – is one of 22 stations owned by Clear Channel Communications Inc. that have switched to a liberal talk format in the last year. This month, KTLK-AM in Los Angeles became the latest Clear Channel station to adopt the format.

But, Clear Channel had been cutting back on the number of stations that carried AA recently. I see the fact that they have signed up Randi as a signal that they are changing course once again. Hopefully they have seen the financial handwriting on the wall and will be hosting more liberal talk shows in the future.

And to answer “how does someone know that the Clinton Machine got her pulled”, well no one can no for sure. But we know for sure that Hillary’s lies and misdeeds or Obama’s achievements are not mentioned on TP because the people who own TP are Hillary supporters. That’s wielding their power undoubtedly at the behest of Hillary.

You can listen to Thom Hartmann on the internet through these radio stations:

I don’t know what I would do without my daily fix of Thom Hartmann. The only other talk show person I like as much as Thom is Jim Hightower. I used to be able to listen to him on the radio, but he got bumped and I haven’t been able to find him again.

I so agree. I was very disappointed when MSNBC gave Tucker’s spot to David Gregory. I think Rachael would have been a much better choice. Did anyone catch her substituting for Keith Olbermann last Friday? I usually don’t watch Countdown when there is a substitute host, but I watched the whole show with Rachael and I thought she was terrific.

Johnson has said as bad or worse about Obama as Rhodes said of Clinton, which is why he’s persona non grata at a number of places.

That said, I still think RR was totally over the line, she was acting as an AAR rep at an event run by an affiliate, and the suspension was IMO appropriate.

True, I definitely should have thrown in some modifiers and made it clear it was purely my opinion. Consider me abashed. And my opinion was undoubtedly colored by the other opinion that she’s had it coming.

Where I was definitely wrong was in commenting recently that she’d be back on the air at AAR after a suspension. Whoever I was responding to was more probably right, suggesting that she’d give the network a hearty “Up yours!”

You know RHF, you would be well served if you were to take an anger management class. Because you are going to be very angry for the next 8 years with Obama as President. Do you think you will be able to survive it with all that anger and hostility you keep spewing here and I suspect elsewhere.

But I do think that if she called Obama a n*gger I would not have been fine with it. And I have never said I was fine with Randi calling Hillary a whore. I think she should have apologized but it’s her right not to. That still does not make me a fan of Hillary. I do not like what she has become and I do not like what she is doing to the country and the party she says she loves. From what I can see Hillary only loves Hillary.

it was quite a show, streaming and watching the sammy cam today,
as sam was doing randi’s show, and has the whold time of her “suspension”…
during the first break, he found out the story about richard belzer taking over
the time slot next week… a real kick in the gut, low blow by AAR to sam…
i don’t know how he kept his cool to get back on the air, a real pro sam is!

the bloggers and IMers wondered if HE was getting fired as one of the suits was
in the booth with him a couple of times… sam answered that no, he was not
“being fired by hillary clinton”… ha.

one thing’s for sure – leftist radio will not die… and it’s only getting better…
more venues and sources… and that’s GOOD.

damn… her webpage was chock full of homework too… but found this:

Which for now is a back door into her sight .

    interesting reading there…

Although I don’t post very often, I have flagged RHF several times for the foul things that have been posted. I don’t mind people disagreeing with each other and having a heated exchange of ideas, but RHF’s comments do not qualify as an exhange of ideas.

    definitely flag worthy… done.

    folks – we just witnessed
Submitted by rctowns on Thu, 04/10/2008 – 7:20pm.
    a paradigm-shift.

corporate radio is finished – long live blog-casting.

sam seder (whether he knows it or not) was showing us the future, when he was holding up his i-phone with the simulated vid-cast of the sammycam.

with enough servers in his spare bedroom at home, samsedershow.com can run round-the-clock programming, maron v seder with sam in upstate ny and maron in australia or whereever – video set-pieces with jon benjamin, kent jones, jim earl, lizz winstead or whomever the hell steps up (brian from everett – even you, buddy). this is going to be way cheaper and way bigger than broadcast radio or television ever could be. and we can pay for it directly – fck the advertisers forever more.

marc maron was subbing for malloy tonight… guess randi was on for a bit too:

-AA wanted to ammend her contract. She said no.

    -She was willing to apologize

-They wanted to see how the public reacted to a controversy

-They found out she is an asset to AA and her support remained even after the controversy.

-They wanted to make her contract so they could fire her anytime for anything. Of course she didn’t agree to that.

-She indicated that her criticism of Hillary was a factor in their displeasure with her. She said people at the network have a lot riding on Hillary becoming president

-That a radio wannabe wanted her job (Taylor Marsh??)

Mark mentioned that he had talked to Sam today.

    My Son’s War
Submitted by davelikesfish on Fri, 04/11/2008 – 12:37am.
My son is in Sadr City. He is going thru shit I wish he never had to go thru. Five from his platoon have been killed in the last couple weeks. He joined the Army because he didn’t have a good job. His best friend since childhood was an army recruiter and talked him into joining up as an infantry soldier for the $20,000 bonus. I was a soldier for thirteen years before getting a medical discharge three years ago. I didn’t want him to join. I don’t think he thought he would end up in combat. I knew as soon as he told me he joined as an infantry soldier. He says it scks and things are getting really bad over there. Two of his friends were hit by morter fire. They were rushed out by a medevac vehicle. He had to clean up all the blood before going to the hospital to see how they were. He was told they died before they even got there. It scks Dad.
After worrying about my sons safety I think about how this is fcking him up. Then I think about the 4000+ Americans and the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi human being killed. The millions of people fcked up by all this. It scks. I hear George Bush sleeps like a baby. I wonder what he thinks about?

    and, with that, g’nite…

(hope i got all the appropriate u’s out of there and it posts this time)
    .

  79. And the beat goes on says:

Looks like I got some of it wrong at #64…he didn’t edit the bleeps- he edited it for “sound bites”. I am shocked by the rabid attacks that Hillary supporters feel are fair and justified to get their candidate elected. Many feel that you are judged by the company you keep. She should take a close look at those who say they support her and decide if this is really how she wants to be represented.

I am assuming that Johnson and friends’ escapades are what Randi referred to tonight on Mike Malloy as “marketing” survey. She did say he has done some strange things but never went any further. Can’t wait to hear her show on Monday.

  80. bratboy says:

Well, I for one, enjoyed listening to Randi. Sure she was abrasive at times, but then so are the right-winger talk show hosts. The difference was that Randi spoke the truth and the right-wingers didn’t.
Three cheers for Ms. Rhodes and best wishes in her next endeavor.

so don’t listen, hanshiro… like preachin’ to the choir anyway…
but think of all the NEW ears that will be exposed to the truth…

…and all it took for Tokyo Rose ClearChannel to get listeners like you back was to pander to you a little, gull you into believing there’s some grand awakening, (when actually it’s simply the pendulum of excess swinging inevitably back after the neocons) and keep raking in profits with no consequences.

I guess you’d be okay with the Rwandan hate radio stations if, after inciting the genocide, they started broadcasting some progressive peace message, all without skipping a beat in profits (but hey, think of all the new listeners…after the old ones were dead, of course…) I guess some people are more forgiving of propaganda monstrosities that cost lives, advocate destroying the Constitution and support torture in the name of profits.

Hey, rather than shut down Pravda, they shoulda just changed advertisers and hired Armstrong Williams and a few other whores to apply appropriate lipstick.

And people wonder why politicians treat the American public like gullible simps who don’t possess the inner fortitude to actually hold responsible the corporate accessories to war crimes. All Halliburton has to do is sell Colbert DVDs and *poof* all is forgiven, right?

  82. prabhata says:

I live in the Green960 area, but I stopped listening to the radio. The only person worth listening is Tom Hartmann. Randi is a talker, but often demonstrates she is ill informed about current issues and historical facts. For example, I happen to catch her one day saying that HRC imitated southern accents when in front of black audiences. She was referring to the instance when HRC spoke at the memorial of Ms. King and recited a poem by a black poet that was written in a manner displaying black English. Randi repeated Fox News misinformation. Stunning, because most progressive do not use Fox News as a source.
