Cheney: If U.S. Withdraws From Iraq, Al Qaeda Would ‘Acquire Control’ Of Country’s Oil Resources»

cheneydar.jpg Yesterday, Vice President Cheney appeared on Sean Hannity’s radio show and fear-mongered about the consequences of withdrawing from Iraq. He told Hannity that al Qaeda may take over Iraq’s oil reserves:

HANNITY: If we pull out too early, what do you believe the consequences would be? […]

CHENEY: For us to walk away from Iraq I think would have at least that bad an effect, probably worse, because if al Qaeda were to take over big parts of Iraq, among other things, they would acquire control of a significant oil resource. Iraq has almost 100 billion barrel reserves, producing 2.5-3 million barrels of oil a day. If you take a terrorist organization like al Qaeda and give it that kind of revenue, there’s no telling the amount of trouble they could get into.

Listen here:

This claim appears to be emerging as an administration talking point about the dangers of withdrawal. On March 19, President Bush also warned that out of “chaos in Iraq” could emerge an “emboldened al Qaeda with access to Iraq’s oil resources.” When a reporter asked White House spokeswoman Perino about Bush’s statement, even she couldn’t believe Bush would make this claim, alleging that the reporter was misrepresenting the President’s comments. (He wasn’t.)

It’s highly unlikely that al Qaeda would take control of Iraq’s oil if the United States redeployed. First, the vast majority of Iraqis are Shi’ites, who want nothing to do with a fringe Sunni group like Al Qaeda. Second, 70 percent of the country’s oil is in southern Iraq — e.g. Basra — where there are strong Shi’ite strongholds.

Despite Cheney and Bush’s claims, U.S. withdrawal would not mean that al Qaeda would suddenly be able to defeat at least three different powerful Shi’ite militias (Mahdi Army, Badr Organization, and Fadhila’s gangs) to seize control over Iraq’s oil.

Digg It!

Great. Now the Vice-President is making the same arguments as our trolls for a continued occupation.

I apologize for not being able to cite which TP poster eviscerated this argument when one of the trolls pushed it a few weeks ago, but trajan. or whichever troll it was, couldn’t even make a counter-attack. Just slunk away.

  5. tombaker Says:

yet, when it’s convenient, he says that al qaeda is “defeated”.

    which is it, Dick

that’s a pretty convenient enemy - one that you can beat all day long, that nonetheless “poses a serious threat” and demands that billions of dollars be spent fighting it.

  8. Erroll Says:

Cheney states that “… if al Qaeda were to take over big parts of Iraq…” What Cheney conveniently neglects to mention is what independent journalist Nir Rosen had reported in The Atlantic a while back, which is that both the Sunnis and the Shia despise and loathe the terrorists. As Rosen reported, Iraqis have been placing burning tires around the necks of the foreign jihadists. If and when the U.S. were to finally leave Iraq, the Sunnis and the Shia would unofficially join forces to drive those members of al Qaeda out of their country. Of course, what Cheney has said will receive substantially more coverage than the factual reporting of a Nir Rosen or a Patrick Cockburn.

  15. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

If the reich-wingers were concerned about Al-Qaeda, they shouldn’t have invaded Iraq.

  16. WaltinTexas Says:

Sounds like something this incompetent administration should have considered BEFORE going in. But then again, if you lie in order to gain the support for invading in the first place, there is no consideration of the outcome. Their only consideration was how to direct our national treasury into the pockets of themselves and their friends.

  17. kdoug Says:

Imagine if an imperialist state that invades and occupies other countries were to capture Iraq’s oil reserves and turn them over to their corporate overlords

Chickenlittles - AQ represents less than 5% of the insurgent forces in Iraq. They are hated by the Shiites, the Sunnis have turned on them. And why should we listen to you. There was no AQI until you guys bungled the invasion. No wonder why Cheney skipped out of Vietnam on his deferments. He knew how incompetent he was.

  22. Dumb_Hussein_Fox Says:

That’s odd; when Cheney were planning to go in there, it was emphatically NOT about the oil. So now we’d better not leave because it IS?

  24. Marie Says:

In the first place, Cheney is never right in his predictions.
In the second place, Al Qaeda is Sunni - a minority in Iraq. The Shiites run the government and are the majority population - how Al Qaeda would gain control of Iraqi oil is a fantasy in his own corrupted mind.
In the third place, Iran is the closest ally to Iraq, Maliki, and the government of Iraq - they are also persians whose religion is Shiite muslim.
Cheney is again fearmongering, and lying.

  25. pluege Says:

  28. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

What a dick. According to our military there are maybe 1,000 AQ in Iraq. How are 1,000 AQ going to take over Iraq (because that’s what they would have to do to gain control over the oil) when our 160,000 soldiers can’t do it? Anyone who buys this BS is a hopeless case.

Finally we hear from Cheney it was all about the oil. Our soldiers have died for Cheney’s greed for oil. If we stay we die and still we wont get control of Iraq’s oil. Iraq will have control of their own oil. Now Bush/Cheney said when they illegally invaded Iraq the US oil would be reduced. That didn’t happen as here in Southern Cal. the gas price is above 4 dollars for regular gas. A visitor from Iraq was shocked as he said gas in Iraq is 50 cent a gallon. I must admit the Iraq leaders are smart they get to keep their oil and get 12 billion dollars a month from the US.

Cheney’s need to bathe in the blood of younger people (not necessarily virgins; that’s a myth) will not end in nine months; it’s a daily requirement. Along with shielding himself from sunlight, avoiding mirrors and hanging upside down for ten hours a day in his man-sized safe.

I don’t even think Cheney cares who believes him anymore. He’s as much as admitting that the whole reason for this huge foreign policy blunder is OIL. He doesn’t care who dies, he doesn’t care how deep in debt our government goes, he doesn’t matter how much we trash our standing in the world — as long as he gets his OIL.

Cheney isn’t about to walk away from the black gold without a fight. Only his weapons are getting more and more pathetic. He can’t serious believe that Americans are going to buy his little fantasy that a bunch of disorganized rag-tag terrorists are going to somehow wrest all this oil away from the Iraqis? The Iraqis so far have been doing a pretty decent job of keeping the oil away from US. I can’t imagine AQI will be much of a problem for them.

Because when you shorten it ‘for brevity’s sake’ it has the convenient added benefit of conflating a rag-tag groups of Iraqis that want the US out of their country with the people that committed the crimes of 9/11.

We need to stop calling this group by the wrong name. Until we use the write words we can’t ahve a reasonable discussion.

    Black gold. Texas tea.

It is and always was about oil, blood for oil. Don’t put in enough troops, we don’t want to oiverthrow Saddam Hussein and hand a freed country over to the Iraqis. We need a “continuous presence” while we build a massive “embassy complex” for ourselves, and the only way to guarantee that is another Vietnam, only better, a truly losing proposition that we can’t withdraw from (and agent Michael Ware to back us up on that, disguised as a virile “real person” scud stud). The result: Obscenely juicy, yummy, international defense contracts, while we get control of the oil, and keep anyone else from getting it. (By “we” I mean “them.” We are just the means to that end.)

I’m an Obama supporter and my heart is sick every time he utters those words, “Protect our interests in Iraq.” Hillary says it too, of course. All the candidates who DIDN’T say it are long gone, weeded out by the voters months ago.

shoeless is having a rough day.

Yea, and I carelessly pounced on shoe too. Sorry, but when one is enraged as we are, it’s sometimes hard to feel the snark.

That’s OK. I don’t mind. I’ve just got my snark waders on today.

  90. DieNowForPeace Says:

“I think I will still fill up at Citgo instead.”

It’s still the cheapest gas in Dallas.

Besides, what difference does it make as to which “dealer” you get your fix from? They’re all crooks anyway.

  91. robertoroberto Says:

But Shoeless, Bin Laden isn’t Al Queda and vica verca. I once heard from an Egyptian friend of mine that Bin Laden himself hasnt even heard of anything called Al Queda.

  92. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Was listening to Ed WSchultz this morning who said USGS has discovered huge reserves in western North Dakota/Eastern Montana. I am sure that plans are being made for immediate invasion/occupation of this area.

No, what will happen is that we (meaning our government) will give the oil reserves to our major oil companies, then we will subsidize their pumping the oil out of the ground and getting it to the gas stations, then we will have the privilege of paying $4.00 a gallon for the gasoline that really belongs to us in the first place. What a sweet deal for the oil companies.

  93. Carly Corday Says:

    “Who is this “we” ?

I’m not in Iraq , slaughtering civilians …………..”

Your point extremely well-taken. Bugs the crap out of me when people comment to the effect that “we” and “Americans” are killing people in Iraq, etc. Makes me furious.

That’s why I said (typed clearly, in English) that “By ‘we’ I mean ‘they’– because we are just the means to that end–” meaning Americans are bearing the entire burden and blame for what Cheney is doing. We are paying. Dearly.

Come on, McMetal, don’t fight with me, we’re on the same side (for now). Let’s just arm wrestle. LOL.

“I think I will still fill up at Citgo instead.”

Is that the one owned by Venezuela’s government?

Yes. It’s the only place I buy gas. The profits go to build schools and hospitals, not only in Venezuela, but also in other poor Latin American countries.

I would rather push my car than buy gas at Shell, Exxon, or BP.

We are no longer on the same side, McMetal. I have no interest in who you are or what you think. You are a nasally hateful sociopath who has never even stubbed a toe. An un-person incapable of thinking a thought through to its sane, rational, logical conclusion. A getter of the wavering republican vote for McCain, a taker away of wavering Republican votes from Obama. A self-pleased ruiner of things. A smug, stupid hater, as small as they come.

No, what will happen is that we (meaning our government) will give the oil reserves to our major oil companies,

Who will then sell it on the open market to the highest bidder.

There’s absolutely NO guarantee that it would be used for domestic gasoline consumption.

When did I ever claim to be on the “same side” as your imbecilic self ?

I make the decision(s) of whom and what I side with and for ; not a banshee-like delusional lunatic who believes themself to be some sort of “all-seeing” being when they are actually a moronic ignoramus…………

  100. DieNowForPeace Says:

    U.S., Iraq Negotiating Security Agreements

The first is a “status of forces agreement,” or SOFA, defining and protecting the legal status of U.S. military personnel and property in Iraq. Negotiated and signed under executive authority, it is a binding commitment but does not require congressional approval.

Among aspects unique to the proposed SOFA, Senate Democrats said, are that it would allow U.S. forces to unilaterally initiate military operations and to detain Iraqis, and would immunize civilian U.S. contractors from prosecution in Iraq.

The second agreement is a long-term “strategic framework” the administration has said will establish “cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and security fields.” A “statement of principles” that Bush and Maliki signed in December said the framework, which they plan to sign by July 31 to take effect Jan. 1, included “security assurances and commitments to the Republic of Iraq to deter foreign aggression against Iraq that violates its sovereignty and integrity of its territories, waters, or airspace.”

I wondered how long it would take this week before Cheney would be sent out by the incapable Bush to counterattack the questioning by the dems of Petraeus’ during the hearings.
We don’t have a president or a commander-in-chief. America has a sniveling, arrogant, posturing fool who sends out others to do what he is incapable of doing.

He uses AQ as a bugaboo so he can equate Iraq with 9/11 and tap into the reptilian brains of the last 25% who still believe him.

Shoeless has written, perhaps the greatest, most intelligent come back comment to a troll I’ve read.

It was a thread where people (regulars) were saying “plus one” to mean that they were in favor of some issue (can’t remember). Then good golly enters the scene by saying: “minus one”. And shoeless says: “I overestimated you. I think you were a zero” Pure genius.

I guess that shoeless, dbadass and badmoodman have the best satire here.

  112. MCMetal Says:

    BTW Carly

I was laughing so hard at your idiotic and ignorant post , I completely missed this comment by you :

A getter of the wavering republican vote for McCain, a taker away of wavering Republican votes from Obama.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I’m one of the biggest opponents of McStupid here ; anyone and everyone here could tell you that.

And you’re a bigger idiot than I 1st believed ; you’re actually under the laughable impression that any Republicans are going to vote for Obama ?

Wow ……….You’re so gullible , I wouldn’t be surprised if gypsies and snake-oil salesmen start camping out at your door-step……

  113. pete Says:

To be fair, MCMetal, lots of “republicans” will vote for Obama. Of course, over the last 7 years, they have changed their affiliation to Independant or Democrat. Personally, though once a republican, when I’m asked what party I support I say, “the opposition”.

And did or could I , in any way , change your mind as to whom to vote for as Carly so stupidly and lyingly claims ?

  115. Marie Says:

    #93 Bilbo,
I have always been of the mind that certain things like minerals and oil and so forth should belong to the people of a country, I recognize and accept that corporate expertise is allowed to process the natural resource AND they should be allowed to make a profit doing so, but they must be regulated by the federal government.
IF there is a new source of oil in ND (and I am somewhat suspicious of the timing of this news) it will be an uphill battle should this be determined to be regulated as I prefer, because precedent has been set. The oil companies will set up shop there and the taxpayer will subsidize their efforts but get nothing in return except, as you say, increased prices at the pump and elsewhere.

I’ll reserve comment on Carly’s comments. It’s not my pissing contest.

But, the words and deeds of Bushco have resulted in my unflagging opposition. No power on earth could make me vote for ANY candidate, with an (R) after their name, in the foreseeable future. If I live another 30 years, the neocons are a bitter memory, and persons of high moral fiber reclaim the party? I’ll still think twice. I would probably have to meet them in person to convince me they are worthy of my vote. I’m not holding my breath.

Wow..I just wonder if there will be a way to indict bush and darth after they leave office for all the “stuff” the dems will find about torture and the run up to war.

I still firmly believe that cheney should be immediately arrested to await trial for plame outing. i feel gitmo would be appropriate place alongside some al-qaeda type who will whisper bin laden’s name into his ear every 5 seconds. then, mercifully, darth will have his 5th heart attack and be as brain dead as he is now.

we are living history and we don’t know it.
