Yesterday, Jackie Speier was sworn in as Congress’s newest Democratic member from California, succeeding the deceased Tom Lantos. During her opening speech, Speier was loudly booed by House conservatives when she began speaking about Iraq. “The process to bring the troops home must begin immediately,” she said. “The President wants to stay the course, and a man who wants to replace him suggests we could be in Iraq for 100 years.” Watch it:
MyDD has more on Speier.
Transcript:
SPEIER: Recently, I was introduced as having been elected to replace Tom Lantos. I had to laugh. I was elected to succeed Congressman Lantos. No one will ever replace him. […]
Madam Speaker, I was struck with something while campaigning for this seat. A public servant is never more in tune with her constituents than when she is first running for the office. While holding over 60 community meetings across my district this year, the most common question was — when will we get out of iraq?
It was asked by voters across the spectrum, veterans, students, parents, the prosperous, middle class, those still working towards their piece of the American dream. The process to bring the troops home must begin immediately.
The President wants to stay the course, and a man who wants to replace him suggests we could be in Iraq for 100 years.
But, Madam Speaker, history —
(BOOS)
PELOSI: The House will be in order.
SPEIER: — will not judge us kindly if we sacrifice four generations of Americans because of the folly of one. And, Madam Speaker, as a passionate as people are of getting out of Iraq, they’re also worried.
PELOSI: The house is not in order. Will the gentlemen please take their conversations outside the chamber.

Wait. Isn’t it always the “conservatives” complaining that liberals stifle dissent? Isn’t it always the “conservatives” that complain about the rude behavior of students and liberals when “conservatives” come to speak at campus events?
April 11th, 2008 at 12:31 pmLeave it to the Right to infantilize the workings of Congress.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:31 pmAnd she hits the ground running!
April 11th, 2008 at 12:33 pmNothing compared to the boo’s Bush gets. A drop in the bucket.

April 11th, 2008 at 12:35 pmFCUK EM. KEEP TELLING IT LIKE IT IS.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:35 pmTypical bully behavior. Demand respect when they are in charge but show distain for anyone else’s opinion.

“barely audible”!
April 11th, 2008 at 12:39 pmI agree, eff these hypocritical a-holes. Glad to see someone tell it like it is, right off the bat. I didn’t know Congress people booed like that.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:39 pmYou have to understand that booing is about all the neocons can do with Jackie at the moment. She only just got there, so there’s nothing to blackmail her on. She hasn’t been seduced or corrupted by the system yet, so she still has the ideals and convictions that she ran on for this seat.
She’s also capable of speaking her mind, and doesn’t mind doing so. She’s not likely to be put off by a little booing, and that’s all the Bush puppets have in their toolbox against her.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:41 pmThe Reichwing care not how many people die or are injured in this mis-adventure.

April 11th, 2008 at 12:42 pmThis shows exactly what Republicans are all about. They can’t argue about the merits of a point, they have to attack the messenger when they disagree with you. They are supposedly the party of “family values”, but they welcome a lady by booing her. Nice you bunch of cowards! The only good republican is a former Republican. They make me sick with this bullzhit.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:42 pmI meant they make me sick with this “bullchit”. Since I can’t spell it the right way on this site.

April 11th, 2008 at 12:43 pmConservatives boo new congresswoman’s Iraq remarks.
Yet they cheer wildly like they’re at a sporting event when an unintelligible imbecile lies incessantly through mangled English during a State of the Union addy , while also applauding like wind-up toy monkeys…………..
April 11th, 2008 at 12:44 pmCopnservatives want to kill your kids and spend all your money for Bush’s War and they get pissed when anyone suggests that maybe the kids are ok with two arms, two legs and a complete skull.
Send your own kids to die you miserable fcks.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:45 pm“Will the a55holes please take their conversations outside the chamber and don’t come back, ever!”
There, fixed that.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:47 pmTP is still trying to peddle this discredited Speier received “a resounding chorus of boos” story, eh?
Amusing…
From one of the Washington Post’s “Grounds Crew” bloggers:
“How loud were the boos for Speier?”
Just a few morons booing. Most of the people acted civilized.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:47 pmJackie Speier you go. Whenever you hear booing from the conservatives you know you are on the right track.
Keep the faith and never back down, fight the good fight with all your might. The majority of the conservatives won’t have a job come the next election.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:50 pmshoeless,
Thanks for the laugh ;-)
Good one.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:50 pm“How loud were the boos for Speier?”
Well, most of us actually watched the accompanying video and are able to draw our own conclusions. But feel free to only listen to whose drivel you chose.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:51 pmFunnier still; it was really just a few morons booing, and most acted civilized.
Where is everyone’s favorite booing denier when you need him?
April 11th, 2008 at 12:52 pmIt was a very irresponsible comment. We have to maintain a presence in Iraq until we stabilize it. Were in to deep at this point to just recklessly withdraw our troops. We need to immediately take control of the oil wells so we can repay our treasury back for the cost of liberation.

April 11th, 2008 at 12:59 pmOn the off-chance that this poster is a well-meaning contrarian and not another troll disguise:
It was not at all irresponsible for a Congresswoman to make such a comment. Just because you and some boorish GOP Representatives see things differently, Rep. Speier has every right to speak her mind, and to represent the views of her constituents.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:59 pmGood for her. If she was being booed by the idiot warmongers in Congress - that means she’s saying the right things.
Screw them.
April 11th, 2008 at 1:00 pmHere is another example of patriotism and dissent on display. As Howard Zinn has wisely noted, Dissent is the Highest Form of Patriotism. This begs the question of why the mass media has not reported extensively on this event.

I see…so we need to steal the Iraqi resources to pay ourselves back for invading their country and killing and injuring many of their non-combatant citizens, including many children. And this is what you would define as “liberation?” Of course, there is an acknowledgement here of the real reason we went into Iraq (see Cheney Energy Task Force meetings with large Iraq map spread out on table).
I’m not familiar with this poster and I don’t believe this is snark…I think this individual is absolutely sincere in his/her misguided beliefs.

April 11th, 2008 at 1:18 pmAt the time, it was said that “Rep. Darrell Issa, a Vista Republican, bolted from his seat and left the floor.” during her speech.

That took courage, and the majority response from the crowd was more positive than I would have expected, seeing as their were capitol police all over the place. Even the woman at the end of the video stated they were stating their beliefs which they had the right to do….even though she hated what they had to say. Don’t expect the MSM to cover any of this kind of activity until it becomes a nationwide phenomena. That’s what it took to get the Vietnam war protests covered by both the papers and the broadcasters. They started out small, and just grew and grew. The American people saying ENOUGH!!!!

April 11th, 2008 at 1:50 pmSome Republicans booed. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, walked out of the chamber. Speier, an 18-year state legislator known for taking on tough issues and interests, was nonplussed at the mini-controversy.
“The truth is, I think it was a minority of Republicans that were booing - and they represent a minority of Americans who still support the war,” Speier said by phone Thursday.

The guy probably went home and beat his wife (and the 14 year old vietnamese boy he probably keeps in his basement). Nothing more amusing in this world by watching an assertive woman put her boot up the azz of some man who thinks he owns the world..
