Lott: ‘I haven’t paid for lunch in 30 years.’

In an interview with the Washington Post’s Mary Anne Akers yesterday, former Republican Sen. Trent Lott (MS) discusses his new career as a lobbyist, saying the private sector “isn’t as cushy” as his gig in the Senate, where he had “free lunches” and a “taxpayer-funded car and driver.” “I took the Metro for the first time,” said Lott. Apparently joking, Lott told Akers, “I haven’t paid for lunch in 30 years,” to which his lobbying partner former Sen. John Breaux (D-LA) added, “he’s learning how to pay for lunch.”

As a senator, Lott was such a fan of lobbyist-funded lunches that when the Senate was considering ethics reform, he complained: “Now we’re going to say you can’t have a meal for more than 20 bucks. Where are you going, to McDonald’s?”

As a citizen of Mississippi, I can assure everyone that Lott no longer represented the people of our State in his last years in office, he represented the Republican Party and the Bush Administration as a total and complete lapdog of the President. Was absolutely disgusting, and the same continues today, our Congressional delegation cannot even think on their own, they do the bidding of the Republican party.

    Hey Trent Clott

Why in the hell would you need a daily lunch that costs over $20 ; especially when the only ‘meaningful’ thing you ever said or did was to try and stupidly defend Strom Thurmond’s racism ?

No embarrassment, no shame. One of the simplest and best arguments I’ve seen for term limits yet. I don’t believe that anyone in either the House or Senate should serve longer than 12 years total. For example, a Rep. who serves three terms in the House (2 years each term), would be allowed a single term in the Senate (6 years) if they were elected to such a seat.

And the system that not only allows this mentality, but begets it, nurtures it, rewards it, is seriously broken.

A Senate career has the best benefits — those that the Senators themselves don’t care for their constituents to fully enjoy.

  16. Bluestocking says:

Perhaps the free lunches and the taxpayer-funded cars and drivers are part of the problem that we see with Congress, hmmm? These people are supposed to be in our service, after all — not us in theirs. As far as we can tell, the Founding Fathers never really intended Congress to be something that one could turn into a lifetime career — and it seems to me that many Congresscritters, especially those who have been in office for a long time, have become so accustomed to holding power that they’ve started to forget and neglect their duty to the people.

If it’s not possible for us to have Congressional term limits — a law which we all know Congress would never willingly pass! — then perhaps we should at least consider limiting some Congressional perks to remind the Congresscritters of what life is really like for most of the rest of us. Perhaps requiring Congresscritters to pay for at least some of their own lunches and their own gasoline would given them incentive to address some of the more important issues facing the common people.

    Poor widdle Lott :(
    – boo-frickin-hoo — he has to pay for lunch now, after having had free $20 lunches for 30 years — if I ate a $20 lunch every day, I sure wouldn’t need dinner. People like Lott have been pigging out at the trough for so many years, they don’t have a clue about average people — you know, those of us who brownbag a sandwich, or who (horrors) trot down to the nearest burger outlet.

MC, yes I remember the great Clinton years and I believe Lott was Senate majority leader and passed all that great legislation during the era…oh those were great times indeed. Thank you Bill and Trent.

Clinton’s approval rating reached its highest point at 73% approval in the aftermath of the impeachment proceedings in 1998 and 1999 ; that was while Trent Clott was Senate Majority Leader.

Thank you , Mr Clott , you revealed yourself as a true Republican ; a total piece of shit hypocrite………

Is there anything that usurious deer-tick p.o.s. HAS paid for in 30 years?

  29. misshusseinmolly says:

You know, I am aware that our elected representatives get a lot of perks that we common folk will never see. I can live with that because we have far more important issues to worry about, and the amount of money we are spending on this insane occupation of Iraq far outweighs the money we spend providing free lunches, health care, and other goodies for the folks in Washington.

But what really GALLS me is when they complain about it! Lott wanted to be a well-paid lobbyist so bad that he ditched the rest of his Senate term (thereby ditching the people who voted for him) — just so he could start his new line of work right away instead of having to wait, as he would have had to do under the new rules he squeaked out of. So Trent, with his new fat paycheck that he wanted so badly now finds that his life isn’t as “cushy” as it once was?

I’ve taken the Metro in Washington. It’s clean, it’s efficient, and it’s a great way to get around. There are many places in DC where you can get a very nice lunch for $20 or less. Lott still lives larger than most of us. His kvetching doesn’t get any sympathy from here.

“Trent Lott in gay prostitute scandal”

billinexile.com — Word is leaking out that the retirement of Senator Lott is due to his frequenting a young male prostitute – pictured above – who has been connected with the senator. Not only does the good senator like a little boi butt from time to time but he also used to be seen frequenting D.C. area gay bars.

This way we get rid of career politicians. The longer they are in office the more problems you end up having with them. Too many end up corrupt. Most have sold their soul to a lobbyist. Easy money……
