Introducing Attackerman

Today, ThinkProgress is launching Attackerman, a new blog site featuring the insight, commentary, and analysis of Spencer Ackerman.

As a journalist, Spencer has written for The New Republic, the American Prospect, and Talking Points Memo, and is currently employed at the Washington Independent as a reporter covering national security issues. He will undoubtedly offer a unique and distinctive voice from ThinkProgress and The Wonk Room. Bookmark it and check back frequently.

Also, we’ve rolled out quite a few upgrades to ThinkProgress today. After receiving your feedback about our new redesign, we’ve made a few tweaks to make this site more user-friendly. Among some of the key changes:

1) We’ve enhanced the font to make it more readable. (If you don’t see it, make sure to clear your cache. On a PC, hit control-F5).

2) When you click on “comments” now, it will take you directly to the comments section, rather than the permalink.

3) The comments in the comments section have been reformatted to make them more reader-friendly.

4) PC users will notice that the blog has been centered on your screen.

5) We’ve added the “most linked” option into the “view most popular” box on the right hand sidebar.

We’re still making ongoing enhancements. Please continue to let us know what changes you’d like to see us make. As always, thanks for reading.

    Good moves, all!

Well done! I like the cut of this Ackerman guy’s gib!

How about blocking trolls by IP address?

    Otherwise I like the enhancements!

  4. katy says:

    EVERYthing’s a LINK! … still…

i read ackerman last night, thought he sounded a bit too full of himself,
but i could get used to it…

and i LIKE the comments on the LEFT… on my MAC… don’t change it!

good job, for the most part!

  5. aquarius2 says:

Wow! I love the enhancements to the comment section. It is much easier to read. Thanks!

  6. Luis M says:

Good changes, now it’s far more readable (at least in my Firefox). Keep up the good work!

  7. katy says:

thought of something i DON”T like at all… makes the search too difficult…

sometimes i search for something that i remember was in the daily FAST thread… now, there are many “think fast” tags…

i’m not positive, but it seems it would be simpler if there were just one, daily…

  8. katy says:

about ackerman – what i read last night was the initial post of “Speech!”…
the subsequent threads are very good…
no offense, spencer… pay no attention to this bitter, pissed off old lady…
    heh…

Psst. It’s “jib”, like the small sail in front of the mast.

  10. RUCerious says:

gummitch, I think toasterhead was referring to gib as in giblets. Was he snarking him for a ‘turkey’???

  11. RUCerious says:

Welcome to the fray, Spencer. Only one question. How come you get to use the f word, and we aren’t allowed?

  12. katy says:

also – and DO, please, pay attention to this:

is it on MY end? the tabs do not show the title of the thread…

  13. 5th Estate says:

    Very legible.

‘Quote this comment’ AND/OR the ability to quickly apply a link to an upstream comment for quick reference would be nice for thread discussions.

Ahh, yes. You may be right, but I was in fact referring to his site metaphorically, as a sort of metal and/or wooden plate used as a point of attachment for other parts. In this case, the “gib” is the blog itself and the “other parts” are the various and sundry snarkisms to be supplied by posters such as yourself. This stems, of course, from the turn-of-the-century usage of the word “gib.”

    Gib \Gib\, n. [Etymol. uncertain.]

A piece or slip of metal or wood, notched or otherwise, in a machine or structure, to hold other parts in place or bind them together, or to afford a bearing surface; — usually held or adjusted by means of a wedge, key, or screw.

Source: Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

    So you see…

  15. ucathinker says:

Most of the changes are great but I really don’t like the dark background. It doesn’t improve readability and just gives the site a gloomy look. Please go back to a lighter background, there’s enough gloom around these days.

And keep up the good work!! :)

  16. katy says:

wow, toaster… you surprise me… that’s some spin!
“cut of the jib” has been around forever…

    “oops” works great! :-)

  17. Parrotlover77 says:

I wish TP would just have ONE blog, where Attackerman and Wonk Room etc were just new topics in the blog, instead of separate blogs. Just my opinion…

  18. katy says:

ucathinker – think there are still bugs in the works…
my background is white/light, except for a few odd times…
try to refresh or reload the page, and it should be “normal” again…

  19. Zooey says:

It’s easier to read — that’s all I need. The other commenters have great ideas, but this was my “biggie.”

  20. Zooey says:

Is it just my screen, or do we no longer have the ability to flag the idiot trolls?

  21. Gregor Samsa says:

I noticed the “Recommend” and “Report Abuse” links are gone.

if it was intentional, I do think it’s a bad decision: It’s going to be difficult to keep the trolls away.

  22. Max-1 says:

    Where’d the pretty FLAGS go?

  23. Zooey says:

I like “recommending” particularly insightful comments, and it’s nice to be able to flag the halfwit trolls — I think it gives TP a heads-up about what’s happening on the threads.

  24. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I like the changes, but we need the flag and recommend back. I have another suggestion. I have seen, lately, a “featured comment” at the bottom of some posts. How about that comment be automatic and refresh itself depending on how many “recommends” it has gained. Like, after the second “recommend”, post that comment. Then if a different comment gets 3 “recommends”, post that one, and so on. That way we get to see the featured comments we choose rather than you choose.

  25. Keith H. says:

I appreciate the changes, it looks great and is much easier to read.
I agree with Zooey at no. 24.

  26. Marie says:

This morning there were rate and flag tags — now they are gone.
What happened while I was gone?

  27. TheToonGuy says:

There are some abusive posters that need to be dealt with. I hope you guys fix this problem soon!

  28. J says:

I’m missing the “recommend” and “report abuse” tabs.

  29. stormy says:

It is more readable. I like it. Suggestion: I’d like to see a third “flag”. Recommend and Report Abuse is too binary. I’d like to see a “REALLY STUPID” button for the folks (think exely). They don’t normally rise to “abuse” status but are definitely “STUPID SPIN”.
