Iteration, the “Papa was a rolling stone” argument like the song will get a lot of airplay. The Marxist problem is more serious than I had realised, because what Obama said was paraphasing Marx’s view on why people turn to religion, as Kristol pointed out. People disillusioned economically turn to religion, and while this may be true to some degree people don’t want Marxist ideology explaining why they go to church. Especially since Marxism failed so badly itself.
I agree that the left needs some kind of progressive candidate. Most democracies in the world seem to have no trouble finding good quality candidates and getting national health care, welfare gains, consumer protection, and minimum wage rises for their base. The US is the exception here which is why this Obama problem is so frustrating. If this blows up into another swiftboating it will humiliate Democrats for a long time. The Republicans will say Democrats know how to criticise from the back seat but as soon as they want to drive they produce all these flawed candidates.
Of course this was the problem with Marx himself, he had a lot of valid criticisms of capitalism, Brad DeLong is even quoting Marx on his blog to explain the current housing bubble. However Marx had nothing to substitute for capitalism that worked, which is why a presidential candidate talking to poor whites like a Marxist is so toxic. In the same way bloggers have made all these criticisms of Bush’s policies but when it comes to offering an alternate vision they usually have no ideas.
I think one of the main problems Democrats have is that somehow winning the cold war is supposed to have discredited socialism itself, but socialism in the mixed economy works well on other democratic countries like Europe. I think to some degree Obama was trying to point this out, that socialist subsidies of poor whites (and whoever) can help depressed areas like PA more than laissez faire capitalism will. That’s a good point and it is well proven to help in Europe for example where PA would be showered in money like Ireland was, and most of these people are probably originally Irish. Because of this Ireland is doing very well now.
So people like in PA have been turned against economic aid that has helped people like them elsewhere. Some people say that’s what Obama meant but what he actually said was Marxist reasoning on religion and his father was a radical Marxist.
Calling Lieberman and Kristol names is satisfying but it doesn’t solve the problem because they are just the messengers, and there are plenty to replace them with the same message.
Democrats should be calling for a kind of Marshall plan for these depressed areas, to shower them with money for retraining, public works and try and build new industries. That will get their votes and win the election. But Democrats have the limousine liberal disease now, and really don’t want to help the poor any more, because white Democrats don’t want to pay higher taxes to do so.
I think Obama supporters need to look very clearly at what is happening now, and whether Obama has much chance of surviving this swiftboating. I know they want a progressive candidate, but having one that is doomed is not going to help progressive issues. People can have nay sayer like arguments against that, or resort to slandering Lieberman and others, but this is a serious problem here. Obama should have been happy with VP where he could make all these inspiring speeches and since the VP has no real power he would be shielded from swiftboating. Then if he did well he could run for president later with experience to prove he can do the job. I know progressives don’t like that because they want “teh change” and want it now, but one has to be practical about it.

The was I think it will happen will be from the US warships off of Iran firing conventional warhead missles into Israel, probably into unpopulated areas. Note the coincidence of policy between AIPAC, the Neocons, Lieberman, Bill Kristol, and Senator Hillary Clinton. Clinton and Lieberman are quick to agree with AIPAC on the necessity to invade Iran. They are all puppets of AIPAC and not independent thinking representatives of their constituents. They can not be counted on to speak the truth but they will speak policy dictated by AIPAC, hence the comments of Lieberman on Obama.
Recently, Senator Hillary Clinton addressed an AIPAC gathering in New York City where she was not shy about threatening Iran.

As our economy tanks, the foreclosure rates rise and people get wind of multi trillion in military spending to protect Israel as they are put out of their own homes, history could start to repeat itself.
I do not wish for that, I wish for dialog to diffuse a potentially explosiveness of situation.

In some ways, hasn’t the entire existence of the Obama campaign been built on the premise: this guy has an unconventional (and what would have historically been damning) background, but his stunning rhetoric, record of sound judgment, and desire to “transcend” typical stale political paradigms are so obvious that REJOICE! he can still win in the heartland? In some ways the whole thing relies on his dialectical, nuanced manner of participating in the national political discourse. Of course you could say that any campaign, local or national, that relies on nuanced arguments is doomed. But a lot of us really believe that this one could be the exception. And that possibility- of defeating the Republicans and their dastardly politics once and for all with a candidate who is in many ways the perfect target for exploiting irrational American prejudices- is what has made this presidential campaign so thrilling to so many of us.
The reasons this campaign can be different? For one, just by virtue of being the furthest ahead in the course of history, we are in some ways as a society more progressive than we ever have been. Yes, I understand that it might seem otherwise in less urban (and, in some cases, even urban) corners of the country. But, really, even people in Peoria, or in Greensville, or Scranton, have the internet (for example). They are less prejudiced than the last generation. And, of course, most importantly, they know about the current President and will vote with there pocketbook. People are really coming to understand that the neocons aren’t too far from Fascists (not withstanding the Nazi’s economic competence), or at least they understand that this is a more reasonable thing to assert than that Obama is a Marxist (he lectured at the University of Chicago for over a decade, for goodness sakes).
And by the way, I think Lieberman is a scary and treacherous politician as much as the next guy, but I don’t think he was responding to “is obama a marxist” when he said “it’s a good question”. I think that was about the elitist remarks of Clinton. Let’s not attack the man for inciting the marxist claim: the Times and FoxNews are responsible for that.

Joe Liberman disappoints me really. His views on Iraq has totally clouded his professionalism, and I think it has also impaired his judgment. To implicitly accuse Obama of being a communist, and an elitist, when Obama is far from it are all low blows, unbecoming of a senator.

So yeah, if the Democrats do win a larger majority and manages to break the 60 seat majority in the Senate and the equivalent percentage in the House, Liberman will be gone, and he will have to turn into a GOP guy, whom he really is these days.

Keith you are missing my point. Gore spent most of the election trying to convince people he wasn’t a wimp for wearing earth tones and a flip flopper for changing suit colors. He was instrumental in developing the internet but all it got him was mockery. I happen to think Gore would have done a far better job than Bush did. I even think Kerry would have done a far better job, not compared to all Republicans but better than Bush.

Gore’s supporters talked just like you at the time, and couldn’t understand why he lost. Perceptions are everything, facts are unimportant. Having a Marxist father looks bad which is enough. They will take comments he made about looking up to his father in other ways and ask why he didn’t look up to Marxism as well. Your reply doesn’t address smearing and swiftboating. Like most Democrats your plan seems to be hope swiftboating won’t happen then look like a deer in the headlights when it does. Democrats will never be on top until they develop comprehensive plans to beat swiftboating.

Bill Clinton did it so it can be done. I’m not sure just how he did which is why I’m asking people. If you look at all the blogs over the last 6 months I don’t think you will find one serious discussion as to how Obama will overcome swiftboating. Yet the odds are overwhelming he will lose to it unless he has the audacity of a plan not just the audacity of hope.

McCain lost to Bush in the primaries from rumours of having a black baby. The baby was adopted but the smear was impossible to fight against. It’s possible McCain may be too decent to use the same tactics, but I wouldn’t bet on it if he starts losing, besides most swiftboating is independantly funded.

Bittergate was the second swiftboat attack, his pastor was the first. In both cases he folded like a cheap tent. People are very disturbed by his refusal to wear a flag pin. They won’t like the explanation of hardly knowing his father because most voters want a candidate who has a strong familly background, so Obama has to point that out to distance himself from his bad father, like his bad mass murdering cousin and his bad Muslim half sister. So maybe they will ask does the apple fall so far from the tree? Bill Clinton had to overcome a similar stigma with his family so it can be done, but how?

I think they will call him the Manchurian Candidate, or perhaps the Kenyan Candidate. He looks ok but is he a secret Marxist, along with his cousin the dictator and his sister will be made to look like a terrorist.

I really find it hard to believe this is a serious candidate for president. Hillary might not be that great but at least she can demonstrate they survived swiftboating. She’ll probably be impeached as well, they’ll find something.
