Appearing on Hardball’s “College Tour” today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was asked about the recent offensive led by the Iraqi government in Basra. Admitting that the performance of Iraqi soldiers was poor (at least 1,000 deserted), McCain claimed the rest of the forces did “pretty good”:
In full disclosure and frankness and candor and straight talk, the Maliki movement to Basra had a very big downside to it. As you know, we saw a thousand police and military desert their posts. But the rest of the military did a pretty good job, did a pretty good job. We did secure the port of Basra. Maybe I’m digging for the pony here.
Watch it:
Reuters reported that Maliki’s “crackdown on militias in the southern oil port of Basra appears to have backfired, exposing the weakness of his army and strengthening his political foes ahead of elections.”
McCain has been “digging for the pony” in Iraq for a quite a while. When asked in April 2007 by conservative bloggers about efforts by Sadr to oppose the surge, McCain predicted Sadr wouldn’t end up opposing U.S. forces — but admitted he may be “digging for the pony.” At the same time, Sadr released a statement urging Iraqis to consider the U.S. their “archenemy” and to “turn all their efforts on American forces.” Subsequently, “hundreds of thousands of Shia protesters…burned and trampled on US flags in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf.”
McCain’s constant “digging for the pony” has only created one giant hole.

April 15th, 2008 at 6:02 pmHe is a horses ass so he should recognize a pony when he sees one, huh.
April 15th, 2008 at 6:03 pmDoes McCain even know what that phrase means?
April 15th, 2008 at 6:09 pmI admit I had no clue what that phrase meant until I looked it up (I got to the same place Wiscoman is linked to). Figures it would be a Reaganism — this must be why I was out of the loop.
That said — McCain has been using this phrase for quite awhile now. At what point will he finally admit there’s no pony in the crap pile?
April 15th, 2008 at 6:16 pmMcCain: ‘Maybe I’m Digging For The Pony’ In Iraq
Did you lose your pony from your childhood during the Crusades , McDipshit ?
April 15th, 2008 at 6:17 pmNever heard that McCain phase, ““digging for the pony” before today. Maybe McCain is referring to “beating a dead horse.” The Bush puppet regime imposed on Iraq by the presence of three hundred thousand armed occupiers has virtually no popular public support, by that little fact doesn’t seem to bother the Bush gangster regime and the corrupt complicit corporate media.
McCain’s latest stupid clueless idea is to drop federal gasoline taxes for the summer season. Thus running up the federal deficit even further… (what then is going to pay for rebuilding our bridges and highways, John?) What an idiot. How about asking the greedy oil companies to cut some of their obscenely high profit levels and thus lower the retail gas prices instead? Oh, that wouldn’t help the ruling class, would it, John?
April 15th, 2008 at 6:18 pmNothing but GOP horse$hit….no pony here.
April 15th, 2008 at 6:18 pmmore like “humping the unicorn” johnny
April 15th, 2008 at 6:22 pmHillary told the pony story last week. She and McCrazy are two peas in a pod.
April 15th, 2008 at 6:22 pmI talked about how McCain is using myspace and youtube to get elected on my radio show sunday night. you guys shoulda tuned in.

That old lying stupid sack of shit has as much chance of being elected as Chimpy does receiving a Nobel Prize ; for either literature or peace……….
April 15th, 2008 at 6:24 pmMcCain is definitely “digging for the pony” running for President.

Hate to break this to you , but Ronnie Retard is dead , and Chimpy is ineligible (thankfully) , shithead……..
April 15th, 2008 at 6:28 pmWhat about the violence against U.S. troops because of the occupation ? Regardless of who is funding or aiding , it’s pretty obvious McCain’s definition of ’stability” requires that Iraqis except U.S. military domination . Of course every dictator , every South American General who was supported by U.S. foreign policy , wanted ” stability ” and WHY hasn’t any JOURNALIST ask why he (McCain ) never shows any concern what IRAQIS want , i.e. end to the occupation .
April 15th, 2008 at 6:29 pmSo if the U.S. can kill enough resistance , sit in their air conditioned mega forts and ignore the FACT , the Iraqis want the U.S. military to LEAVE , everything is fine ?
The main issue with Al Sadr is not the MYTH he is Anti-American , it’s that he and his political allies refuse to vote to sell off Iraq’s oil reserves or privatize Their OIL industry to foreign (U.S. & U.K. ) companies .
The only reason Malaki is an ally , is he is a puppet that endorses long term military occupation and the selling off of Iraqis assets .
Maybe Johnny was looking for a “pony” keg.
April 15th, 2008 at 6:29 pmMcLyingstupidoldass repeated the lie that Iran is still attempting to develop nukes ; the same wrinkled old dummy who doesn’t know what sect al Qaeda is , is now claiming to know more than the entire intelligence community of the US.
What a typically delusional GOP d-bag …………
April 15th, 2008 at 6:33 pmDIGGING FOR THE PONY? IS THAT OLD PROSPECTOR TALK? TELL US MORE GRANDPA…MAYBE ABOUT THE INTERNETS AND HOW IT’S SERIES OF TUBES
THAT’S GOING TO WIN OVER THE YOUTH IN THE COUNTRY
April 15th, 2008 at 6:35 pmDigging for the pony?
Sounds like something my grandfather, a Canadian WWI vet, would have said. He survived the war but came home a different person. His lungs were permanently damaged by mustard gas and he had to deal with the sight of unspeakable horrors for the rest of his life. He died in 1965.
Sound familiar? History really does repeat itself.
April 15th, 2008 at 6:38 pmNo no, it’s “I Dig a Pony”.
You can celebrate anything you want, John.
April 15th, 2008 at 6:54 pmMaybe McMaverick’s pony is buried in the same hole as Dubbie’s WMD’s, huh?
April 15th, 2008 at 6:56 pm‘McCain:”….We Did Secure The Port Of Basra”.
We have been five years already in this war, over 700 billion dollars spent, thousands of soldiers killed , hundreds of thousands of civliians killed…and now we are trying to secure port of Basra, the second largest city in Iraq.
April 15th, 2008 at 6:58 pmWe still unable to secure City of Baghdad, and city of Mosel the third largest city in the north, yet McCain talks in length of great succeses…
No wonder McWar plans to stay in Iraq another 100 years.
Sorry John, but your jocular “digging for a pony” translates into dead and wounded soldiers and civilians. And over $2 billion per week added to our deficit.
April 15th, 2008 at 7:02 pmMore “pony digging”
BAGHDAD — In two Iraqi cities that American forces say they have largely taken back from Sunni insurgents, deadly suicide bombs exploded within hours of each other on Tuesday, killing at least 53 people.

April 15th, 2008 at 7:04 pmAnd he knows the pony’s somewhere in there because he’s stepping in it’s fecal material with each speech and faux pas!
April 15th, 2008 at 7:24 pmCan a Candidate running for president be impeached in advance - just in case? This guy’s a certified nut and will tank this country into dementia-land if he’s ever elected.
Impeach McSame before he has a chance to get in and immediately be impeached.
April 15th, 2008 at 7:25 pmIf someone gives him a pony, will he go away?
I have a friend the has the meanest dang pony I have ever seen in my life. More like a guard dog, a Doberman on steroids. LOL
Those miniature horses seem to try to make up for their small size in attitude, kinda like trolls.
April 15th, 2008 at 7:27 pm=)
From NPR’s Morning Edition today:
“There are nearly 3 million internally displaced people in Iraq ,and the government has done little to help them. A new report by Refugees International indicates militias, like the one loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, are stepping in to help displaced communities. The militias also find this a fertile recruiting field.”
Maybe the Iraqi Govt. should “pony up” for a little help to those 3 million desperate Iraqi’s before they change horses in Midstream.
Thanks to NPR’s Lourdes Garcia-Navarro for some EXCELLENT reporting from the ground in IRAQ.
April 15th, 2008 at 7:43 pmI’m 61 years old and I heard that phase when I was about 6 years old. An elder friend of my GrandMothers used it so I asked what it meant my GrandMother said it’s an old phase and even she didn’t know what it meant, she had to ask the elder lady. Just how old is Teflon John McCain anyway?
April 15th, 2008 at 7:51 pmNo, not digging for the pony. Just making the pile deeper where a pony is supposedly concealed.
April 15th, 2008 at 8:10 pmDigging for the rotted corpse of the ‘pony’ named ‘occupation’. How does he stand the smell>?
April 15th, 2008 at 8:15 pmThe pony story may very well be quite old but it’s far from dead. I’ve come across it at least twice in the last 10 years.
For anyone unfamiliar with it, here’s the Wikipedia explanation: Positive outcome. Personally, though, I suspect the last (Cockney rhyming slang) version may apply an awful lot better than McCain seems to realize.
April 15th, 2008 at 8:18 pmJohn Cheney McSame can’t find that pony ‘cuz he’s the back half of the pantomime horse. (Python ref alert!)
April 15th, 2008 at 8:40 pm>There’s only 2 other people with a shot at the Whitehouse >that are dumber than this moron.
Wow, mista JDC, let me once again thank you for avoiding the easy trollish way to participate here by playing another game of “how many different ways can I monosylabalically express my displeasure with the lack of a viable fascist dictator running for office?” and instead taking the high road and addressing the substantiative issues raised in this article. Are you happy shia militias are running the show in Iraq? and the government of Iraq is giving royal welcomes to Iranian heads of state?
>How Did This Happen!
People like you don’t see the benefits of birth control.
April 15th, 2008 at 8:41 pmIs “digging for the pony” something only very, very old people will recognize?
April 15th, 2008 at 8:46 pm“Digging for the pony” is an old old joke about a mother and her twin sons, one was an extreme optimist the other an extreme pessimist. It was driving her crazy so she went to a head shrink to find a way to balance them out a little. The shrink told her at their next birthday to buy pessimist a roomful of wonderful toys and for the optimist - put a large box of horse manure in his room. He said, “that should do the trick”. She did so and watched for the results. She went into the pessimist’s room and has he tore open the packages he continually complained these were not the toys he wanted, there were not enough etc. etc. She was dismayed so she went into the optimist’s and there he was with a big smile on this face and joyously digging through all that horse manure saying, “with all this horse shit there must be a pony in here someplace”!
April 15th, 2008 at 8:51 pmI hope this clears up “bullshit Mac’s” comment.
Otto
Ummm . . what was McOldtimer doing to the pony again ?
April 15th, 2008 at 9:23 pm“There’s only 2 other people with a shot at the Whitehouse that are dumber than this moron.”
#3: Would you care to say who is paying you to make this statement? No? Neither Democratic candidate would say anything as stupid as this (let alone, recognizable, discernible). I guess you have to be a member of the neocon club to have a clue about this junk. So, Karl, is that you? And by the way, White House is two words, capitalized in this case. Shot at the White House? My guess is a 49 state landslide that you and your fellow war criminals can’t stop.
April 15th, 2008 at 9:43 pmThe push into Sadr City a month or so ago has completely stalled. Sadly, one needs to go to the foreign press to even hear about current events in Iraq. http://www.iht.com/ articles/ 2008/ 04/ 16/ africa/ 16sadr.php
Another story by Yahoo News tell how the Medhi Army is growing in size and that the Sadr organization is now the one that is providing services similar to what Hezbolla is doing elsewhere.
It seems from these reports that al Sadr is consolidating his political power in Iraq. Why is there no discussion on this issue in the American press. Instead we hear about how successful the surge has been and how that means that an increase American troop presence is need in Iraq as a show of that success. Yes, double and triple speak is what passes for news coming from MSM. And speaking of double and triple speak, did anyone catch McCain’s proposal for the economy. Wait, it was so prepostrous that it doesn’t deserve to be discussed; just dismissed.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:06 am>Another story by Yahoo News tell how the Medhi Army is >growing in size
Yeah, boy, too bad that Saddam guy is dead, from what I hear he was pretty good at keeping these guys in line..
