Echoing Kristol, Rove Says Obama’s ‘Bitter’ Comments Were ‘Almost Marxian’

Yesterday, the Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol claimed that Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) now-infamous “bitter” remarks were Marxist in nature. On Fox News’s Hannity And Colmes last night, former Bush adviser Karl Rove echoed Kristol’s over-the-top characterization, saying “it was almost Marxian“:

ROVE: I don’t find a lot of people in rural America, I certainly don’t find the dominant view to be — “I’m so bitter that I’m going to hold on to my gun or I’m gonna” — You know, it was almost Marxian in this they cling to their religion. I mean, you know, it’s sort of like it’s the opiate of the masses.

Even before Obama’s poorly worded comments last week, many on the right have been making a concerted effort to cast Obama as a socialist and a Marxist. For months now, right-wing talker Glenn Beck, who also hosts a show on CNN Headline News, has been referring to Obama as a “socialist“:

I hope it doesn’t matter to Barack. But he has heard the message of Jesus that shared prosperity is the thing to do. Hope, change, Marxism. This guy is a socialist and all you have to do is listen to his words.

On Fox News Radio yesterday, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) said that it was “a good question” to ask if Obama is “a Marxist,” though he said he would “hesitate” to call him one himself.

Digg It!

UPDATE: As Newshounds notes, Fox News’s Brit Hume and Charles Krauthammer made similar charges on Fox’s Special Report last night. Watch it:

That's rich. The USA hasn't seen a marxist political representative/senator/presidential candidate/major/whatever in almost 100 years, but is the most flung adjective when someone from the right wants to discredit a Democratic Party candidate (who as much as the left as center-right).

This is what our elections have degenerated to. Instead of focusing on what the candidates are saying, they focus on how its being said.

The sad part is that these ad hom attacks are effective. So what if he is Marxist/Socialist/Black/White/Green whatever, the question is: is he right?

  22. Shayne Says:

They smear Obama in every way possible and then when he fights back they cry that he said he was going to wage a different kind of campaign. The nerve!

  26. Shayne Says:

You do that Reist. Obama is never going to sound dumb enough to appeal to neocon kooks. You have to start in the bottom of your class like Bush and McCain to know how to relate to you idiots. Same goes here, I would never vote for Hillary but I'll vote against McCrazy if I have to.

Religion is the opiate of the masses and flourishes where these poor shits don't have hope or education. Some snake oil salesman sold them a bill of goods that the meek shall inherit the earth and they cling to that straw to explain why they don't have a pot to piss in but still ante up when the collection plate is passed.

Rove understands this more than most. Religion is a club the right wing use to beat the masses into submission, the ones who crave a father figure, an authoritarian who will tell them what to do, how to vote, and promise them an afterlife.

Rove is a fcking liar and hypocrite.

  29. Reist Says:

    RantingTommy Says:

Explnation, please. Extreme socialism and big government is indeed something to be scared about. But then again, liberals are petrified of the free markets. What does Government create? Nothing. What does Government want to control? Everything that private citizens create.

Huff Po headline "Obama Would "Immediately Review" Potential Of Crimes In Bush White House". Each candidate needs to state where they stand on this.

Finally, a real reason to vote for someone. These crimes are linked to all failed policies like healthcare, energy policy, rampant cronyism, food & oil prices. Let’s hope review means prosecution. Not that pardoning of Nixon BS that Ford did. Only to pave the way for our current crop of domestic spying torture loving war criminals.

Ford never should of pardoned Nixon. Did that pardon really heal our partisan divide? Did Scooter Libby’s pardon? Going after crime is not partisan; it’s the right thing to do. Maybe all those dead and maimed coalition soldiers and Iraqi’s will feel a sense of justice and closure. Maybe future gov’t executives will give thought before commiting more crimes. Maybe.

You know, Bush being the crowned head of the Repubic Party and all. I'd be interested to hear it, indeed.

And perhaps you have an explanation for us to explain why it is that Mr. Chertoff wants to use satellites to spy on Americans now...?

We all believe at times we won't vote for the "other Democrat" but when the general election comes and we're looking at McCrazy we'll take care of it. And you people are too dumb to decipher that from the polls. And if you're looking into digging up dirt it will be much easier if you start digging on "Hot Pants McSleazy". 55. JMOHR Says:

Beck really nailed it as a perfect definition of Republicans and conservatives. They are against shared prosperity, against hope and against change. This is the world that the Republican elite and the conservatives want. It is a world in which every person fights for themselves. There is no second place, no compassion and no charity. Each person will accept that you are to do anything that it takes. Of course, those who already control power and wealth will always come out on top under such a system. Yes, that is what the Massa's want: people without hope who desire no change and believe in the inherent inequality of people and the rightness of only the few obtaining the benefits of society.

Not that there is any problem being a socialist or a marxist, but what strike me most is these word are coming out from a criminal, a traitor, a lier, a war criminal who should be behind barrs, not speaking freely on TV. A right-wing TV, a FACIST TV, a neocon criminal speaking about a social doctrine that is just. Acording to them. socialism is bad and NEOCOCERVATISM is good... Rove is trying to manipulate the ignorant masses by spreading the FEAR amongst rural and low income masses. Hey Rove, remeber the SUPERDOME IN NEW ORLEANS? The low income masses there do remeber NEOCON FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. When time to vote comes, they will not think about 'the comunists are comming' type of fear propaganda... they will remember the misery, the neglection, the irresponsability and crimes of the current criminals in the WH. Rove included! As per Rove, if he manages to scape prison, I sincerely hope he get cancer and suffer with it very slowly.

I'm all for free markets, with rules and referees. Your side just wants to eliminate the rules so you can cheat.

Walmart promotes competition. If it weren't for Walmart, those alternative places you shop on the government's dime would cost much more.

  154. Shayne Says:

Oops I did it again. No Reist other stores just aren't crap pits. Some of us aren't poor or pathetic enough to shop at a scum hole like Walmart, we can afford to pay a little extra and stay away from the bottom feeders that frequent Walmart. There, now THAT is elitist. True, but elitist.

Reist is the poster boy for reproductive choice (and what happens when the wrong choice is made)

They absolutely do. But you wouldn’t know anything about competition and free markets. Notice how they’re not big on mergers. It means they’re competing and not afraid of it. It makes other stores reconsider their own prices.
    _____

"Bullying" is not "competition." Just ask Vlasic how they liked Wal-Mart "making them reconsider" their prices:

Screw Walmart, I have never set foot in one. Well there was that one time when I wanted to see why anybody else would but other than that, I have yet to spend a dime in one of those places. We have plenty of Mom and Pops actually in our communities and not build on the former wetlands on the outskirts of towns

  159. RantingTommy Says:

I would rather pay double than enter a WalMart. People like Reist shop there. eww. -shudder-

I LOVE America, and I'm sick and tired of you Bushites turning us into the new fascist state resembling Nazi Germany. Bunch of crazies blaming somebody else for your failures. It's everybody else's fault your a loser, spy on them and figure out why. Bitter, bitter, bitter.

  161. Shayne Says:

Um, Karl, the word is "Marxist" not "Marxian". At least get your terms correct when you're smearing someone, ok?

Now that Obama has been called a socialist, a Marxist, a Muslim, etc. it is clear to me that the right is in great fear of him. By that logic, he must be the best candidate in the running. If the GOP hates him, then you know he's the one to vote for.

  164. Reist Says:

    Shayne Says:

Sorry Reist but I own my own business, nobody gives me anything. And why should anybody be required to report their income to the government. That’s right roads build themselves. Schools build themselves.

Now it owns its own business. You sound out of touch to run a business. Let me guess, it's you staying home on an expensive internet connection (a private innovation) while hubby runs it. But the sob story of the IRA counts, right? You're *that* type of democrat. "I need help, to hell with everyone else." Tell me, do you expect the government to put back into the IRA off our tax dollars. Because it isn't going to happen. Get responsible and pay your bills.

Same rhetoric, different post. The Government doesn't build roads and schools, they contract that work to *GASP* the private sector.

I live in a big city, it doesn't matter whether they're here or not, but it matters in small towns. You like the neoNazi you are only care about issues that concern you. I pay less as I walk, carpool, and bike more. I happily pay more for most foods, products, and services so long as I can get them from local producers. You obviously DON'T want to know, and simply want to DENY the TREASON of the Bush WAR CRIMINALS.

The Guardian, WELL RESPECTED in England and beyond, did a major publishing of Prescott Bush and the Nazis.

And if it were FALSE, England has a MUCH HARSHER standard for LIBEL, and the Guardian WOULD HAVE BEEN SUED.

Since they were NOT, the story about Bush's granddaddy Prescott laundering Nazi money are TRUE.

The US government SEIZED PROPERTY from Prescott Bush in 1942 for TRADING WITH THE ENEMY.

There you go, RapeNazi "reist". YOU are a supporter of unamerikkkan TRAITORS like the Bushes, who have

  238. misshusseinmolly Says:

I haven't read through this entire thread, so somebody else may have made these observations. If I'm duplicating anyone else's post, I apologize.

    1) Why does TP dutifully report the aftermath of Obama's gaffes but is curiously quiet when Hillary talks about being "under fire" in Bosnia? There have been plenty of "misspeaks" and "bad phraseology" from all three candidates. Every word that comes out of McCain's mouth these days seems to be documented here, as is all reaction to Obama's gaffes. Are we to believe that Hillary never missteps?

    2) Why can nobody criticize Obama on actual issues? So far, I guess I'm supposed to vote against him because he's a Muslim (false), because he attended a "madrassa" (debunked), because he had an association with a nefarious person (cleared), because of a couple of cherry-picked snippets from 20 years worth of sermons from his pastor (puhlease!), because he made comments about a "typical white person" and "bitter" people in small towns (admittedly badly articulated, but also spun wildly out of context), he doesn't wear a flag pin (BFD -- neither do I, nor do most people I know), and now I'm supposed to vote against him because he's "Marxist"? When any of these talking pinheads want to criticize his plans in any kind of intelligent manner, I'll listen. But the smear machine is just getting more pathetic all the time.

  239. DRxJ Says:

That is the rights only hope. To permanently scar the "on the fence" voters from voting "left".

Since corporations want to have the same rights as humans, shouldn't they pay their fair share? Just asking.

I wonder if Reist knows what the British use the word "corporation" as slang for?

    Prolly not.

"Criminal enterprise", as in the usage, "the legitimization of your corporation (gang)"... or "round up the all the corporation's (gang's) members..."

Provide the link that Bush “inherited” his fortune.

Actually, you have a point. Bush didn't inherit his fortune. He stole it from the taxpayers of Arlington Texas.

From ESPN:The sequence of events related to the purchase and sale of the Texas Rangers by George W. Bush and his partners:

    1989
April: Bush helps arrange a syndicate to purchase controlling interest in the Texas Rangers for $89 million. He borrows $500,000 to buy a small stake in the team and convinces the investor group to make him managing general partner. Bush becomes the public face of the team, while co-general partner Rusty Rose assumes control over the financial side. He receives a reported salary of $200,000 and begins lobbying for a new stadium for the club, which plays in a renovated minor-league facility, Arlington Stadium.

    1990
April: Bush buys an additional $100,000 ownership stake in the Rangers.

October: Arlington Mayor Richard Greene crafts a deal that will go before voters and devote $135 million toward a new stadium for the Rangers by raising the sales tax by a half-cent. At the time, Greene is among a group of former executives being sued by federal regulators for his role in the widespread savings-and-loan scandal.

    1991
January: Arlington citizens, by a 2-to-1 margin, approve public funds for the new $191 million ballpark. Two weeks before the vote, federal regulators dismiss their lawsuit against Greene after he pays a $40,000 penalty.

    1998
June: Tom Hicks purchases the Rangers for $250 million, the second-most ever paid for a Major League Baseball team. With his 10 percent escalator bonus, Bush receives $14.9 million for investment.

You didn't have to put in a hard day's work because others paid your way. And stocking shelves is a typical starter job. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/nah
    Seems to be a word.

Beyond this, does it convey meaning? Is it appropiate for the intended audience and medium? Yes, yes and yes. Yet Jason is too stupid to understand that words are symbolic representations and only work if they convey meaning.

  309. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

    Evidence of hatred???????

    WTF?????????

Anybody have any idea what this twit is muttering about?

  310. Reist Says:

Shayne -- ..might I say that YOU should NEVER accuse somebody else of being a racist. White trash is the absolute lowest life form in a country with this much opportunity

This post contains elitism and it contains racism.

And opportunity is something you didn't create, the free markets did, something of which you're unqualified and unworthy of taking advantage of.

Every time you hype the word 'opportunity' you hype a free-market, private, conservative initiative. Again, get out of our markets.

  311. Bobwurst Says:

Hillary said it herself in private: Obama. Can’t. Win.
    Jason

Hillary also said that she had to run for cover in Taluza because of snipers. I guess you believe that too.

Macain said he wants hillary to win because she'll be easier to beat in the fall. I guess yo believe that too.

Bush said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. i guess you believe that too.

Your mom said she loves you. I guess you believe that too.

  312. DRxJ Says:

Why is it that Jason "3rd Reich" Hendler continues to bully Shayne, a woman (albeit a strong one), yet consistently ignores my challenges.
Because, the ones who are the first to attack a woman, are always the first to back down from a man.
Jason, this is why I will never ever let you slide, my boy.
You're a coward. Plain and simple.
A 41 year old, mentally disturbed, lonely non sex having, coward. Period.
    You.
    Are.
    Dismissed.
    COWARD!

  313. dbadass Says:

    Reist is still here?
I don't mean that in any disrespectful way only in that you claimed to have to get going. You seem to continue to be pretty subjective in your thinking and with a slant toward aggressive posturing. To what do you attribute this? It is unlikely that your opinions will sway anyone if they seem motivated by less than objective thought which is cogent and data driven

The next time you intend to fool someone into thinking you're intelligent, try not post random words out of the dictionary. Too obvious.

This is the same twit who posted "You type stupid" who didn't know that "nah" is a "real" word, and just posted "This post contains elitism and it contains racism."

I know it's wrong to mock the infirmed, but I can't help it, this twit is such a prebumsickle.

See this is exactly what I mean. I am assuming that you have some reasonable level of education and understand a thing or two about dialogue, yet given the benefit and respect of the doubt, you continue to blow it due to what appears to the reader to be nothing but irrational aggression

Please explain how this is random? There are no sentence fragments, no run on sentences, the verbs, predicates, articles are all in the correct place, what is random about it? Or do you not know the definition of random?

  323. Reist Says:

drxj (catchy?) -- ...Shayne, a woman (albeit a strong one)

Strong women earn a living. It doesn't take a strong woman to sit behind the computer with the high-connection, one it doesn't pay for, and ramble on against the world and advocate government control over what it doesn't like. This is an example of a person who wants to use government to force its views on the people.

  324. Bobwurst Says:

    dbadass,

I'm getting the impression that jason really is mentally challenged. that would explain his republican leanings, his lack of social graces, and his fixation on the lone woman willing to reply to him.

And yet, here you are, sitting behind the computer and rambling on against the world and advocating government control over what it doesn't like.

WOW! 307 posts. Thank you reeses for proving what a simpleton you are. "blah, blah, Barack racist, blah ,blah, rush limpballs said blah, blah, mooslims, blah, blah, love it or leave it" Can we please have our ability to flag refuse like this???

  328. nanlichi Says:

Reist reminds of an dog I had once that just showed up at the house. Poor scrawny mutt was so insecure it would do anything for attention. It would eat grass and shit on the back step just so someone would yell at it.

It had a horrible black hole where the psyche should have been. I can see Reist's black, oozing hole where its soul should be.

And just like that dog, Reist will move on to somewhere else to be hated anew. Soon please.

  329. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Anyone here besides me resent this post? Think Progress has spent the last two months ignoring every lie told by Hillary and every dirty trick she has done. Now, in a sly back door way they bring up the one slip of the tongue that Obama has done this whole campaign.

    TP, your bias is showing.

  330. DRxJ Says:

    nanlichi,
If you have had zero success with the opposite (or hell, the same) sex, you'd crave attention anyway you could get.
Thankfully, this is Jason's outlet. We are actually doing him a favor.
Otherwise, Jason would probably snap one day.
You know, where the reporter asks the neighbor of a bloody crime, to which he/she responds "Well, he was always quiet. Kept to himself at his mother's trailer. Never really saw much of him, 'cept when he was renting porn and buying Cheet-Os."

  331. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I am not even going to bother reading this thread. Since TP has taken down the flag button and stopped banning trolls, this site has turned into a real troll-fest and is no longer worth visiting. Off to Huffington Post and Daily Kos to engage in some intelligent dialogue with people who have some mastry of the English language.

See you all later once TP gets rid of the current troll infestation.

  332. Shayne Says:

They did this to Obama yesterday on the Lieberman thread too Bilbo.

  333. nanlichi Says:

    DRxJ,

If I had Reist's anger and hatred issues I would spoil the pelt. Poor thing probably could evolve into a human if it could get past the self hate thing. I bet not though.

Do us a favor Reist. When you leave the note, identify yourself as Reist so we can send flowers.

  334. RUCerious Says:

Bilbo, I am re-reading The Audacity of Hope, and on page 123 he states:

"Still, I was reminded of what my veteran colleagues already knew -- that every statement I made would be subject to scrutiny, dissected by every manner of pundit, interpreted in ways over which I had no control, and combed through for a petential error, misstatement, omission, or contradiction that might be filed away by the opposition party an dappear in an unplesant TV ad somewhere down the road..."

Instead of examining the issues, and taking part in a democratic process, we get this from our effing corporate sellout media....

  335. RUCerious Says:

correction "potential error" ... how ironic!

  336. shoeless Says:

    Xisithrus Says:

Oddly, I dont see Krauthammer or Rove wearing a flag lapel [made in ROC] pin.

Haven't you heard? Republicans don't actually have to wear their flag pins anymore. If you are a Republican the pin is automatically implied.

I believe Jefferson, Washington , Monroe and other intelligent men who we consider our founding fathers were the elites, one would think that we would want the best for our top job in this country to go to an elite, smart and intellgent person.

  339. MOONBAT Says:

Reist is a school kid because he disappeared around 2:30. He probably just likes to jerk our chains. Just a game with him. Probably doesn't really believe anything he says. Enjoy him anyway.

  340. Bluestocking Says:

In my opinion, if you have to choose one or the other, it's far better to be a socialist than a Social Darwinist such as Rove and Kristol and the rest of the neoconservatives!!!! At least socialists are capable of having consideration for other people, perceiving that someone's worth as an individual encompasses more than simply their net worth, and recognizing that just because someone may be worth less in financial terms does not make him worthless!

  341. EvilPoet Says:

Window on Washington: Karl’s kid: Thanks to a morning speech to the National Federation of Independent Business, we now know what Karl Rove does not want his soon to do for a living. “Now frankly,” Rove said during a riff on the temporary worker part of President Bush’s immigration reform plan, “I don’t want my kid digging ditches. I don’t want my kid slinging tar. But I know somebody’s got to do it. And we ought to have a system that allows people who want to come here to work to do jobs for which Americans are not lining up.” What are those tasks that foreigners are more willing to do than Americans are (other than watching soccer)? “I don’t know where you’re from,” said Rove, “but in Austin, Texas in August if you see some guy on top of a roof slinging tar odds are he is not a U.S. citizen.” -Ken Herman, Cox News, June 20, 2006

  342. spd Says:

Congratulations Barack Obama on attracting ludicrous criticism from two of the most despicable public figures to ever assail our sensibilities, and our intelligence.
It is to your credit that these 2 amoral figures (Rove and Kristol) take exception to you.

  343. blue coyote Says:

"Oh Bill Kristol" are you ever not wrong?" Well Billy K maybe you can ask your own daddy Irving if he can remember back to his neo-marxist days what the phrase "opiate of the masses" really meant. Opium was used in our own Civil War as a medicinal wonder drug to relieve the suffering of soldiers wounded in the field of battle. One of own President's, William Henry Harrison was treated with the substance. Hence the phrase Religion is the opiate of the masses wasn't exactly pejorative if you consider that it was being equated with the one relief that ill people of that time had to ease their pain. Religion is often a place where people go to seek solace and relief from our troubled world. The problem is when politicians and pundits swoop in with their wedge issues and try to pit people against each other. Maybe they can find a clip of Obama saying Happy Holidays and declare him an enemy combatant in the War against Christmas?

  344. batteries Says:

This is what our elections have degenerated to. Instead of focusing on what the candidates are saying, they focus on how its being said.

Semantics have become more important than content.

Of course, we have toshiba portege m400 battery, toshiba pa3209u battery Bill Clinton to blame for increasing the ‘importance’ of semantics (there, I beat all the right wingers to that one).
