A new Washington Post/ABC News poll found that 70 percent of Americans disapprove of President Bush’s handling of the economy, an all-time high for that poll. “Bush’s overall rating stands at 33 percent, a percentage point above his all-time low in Post-ABC polling.”

“At 39 months in the doghouse,” President Bush has surpassed Harry Truman’s record as “the postwar president to linger longest without majority public approval. Bush hasn’t received majority approval for his work in office in ABC News/Washington Post polls since Jan. 16, 2005 — three years and three months ago. The previous record was Truman’s during his last 38 months in office.”

Democrats charge that controversial lawyer Steven Bradbury is illegally running the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel because has been acting head of the office for three years without Senate approval. Under a 1998 law, “a nominee can serve as an acting head of an office for only 210 days after a nomination is returned to the president for a second time,” which happened to Bradbury on Sept. 29, 2006.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld “is working on a memoir to be published by Penguin Group (USA) in 2010″ and will donate proceeds to a non-for-profit foundation he founded. “His memoir will be released by Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin.” “This will be a story that will span my lifetime,” Rumsfeld said.

Refugees International reports today that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government has “failed to support millions” of “internally displaced persons who are instead being aided by militias.” The study found that, “with many displaced Iraqis living in poverty,” Moqtada al-Sadr’s militia group has become Iraq’s “largest ‘humanitarian’ organization.’”

Eighty-three percent of Arabs have “an unfavorable view of the United States and 70 percent had no confidence in the superpower,” according to a poll of six Arab countries, which also found that only “6 percent believed the US troop buildup in Iraq in the last year has worked.”

“Some of the country’s most prominent Jewish liberals are forming a political action committee and lobbying group aimed at dislodging what they consider the excessive hold of neoconservatives and evangelical Christians on U.S. policy toward Israel.” The group “will fill a void” as a counterweight to the right-leaning American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Home foreclosure filings surged 57 percent in the 12 month-period ended in March and bank repossessions soared 129 percent from a year ago,” according to real estate data firm RealtyTrac. “For the month of March, foreclosure filings, default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions rose 5 percent.”

And finally: On a section of John McCain’s campaign website site called “Cindy’s Recipes,” you can find seven recipes attributed to Cindy McCain, each with the heading “McCain Family Recipe.” The Huffington Post reports that at least three of the recipes are “word-for-word copies of recipes on the Food Network site.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

My personal thank you to Katie Couric and Brian Williams of CBS and NBC news respectively.

Thank you for your complete, intelligent, dissective and non-stop coverage of the torture planning sessions that were recently revealed taking place in the White House. You’re like a pit-bull with this story, you won’t let go.

This alleged horrendous war crime is the most urgent issue threatening to tear our democracy apart. You and your networks are doing a courageous and professional job keeping us informed as new information breaks.

I never have any reservations about CBS or NBC using the public airwaves as you prove time and again you’re working in the public’s interest. You may literally be saving democracy as you refuse to let this story slip away. You’re a credit to the 4th estate and functioning exactly as the framers of the Constitution predicted. It’s nice to know that the “check” they envisioned the press would perform on elected officials is doing just that!

It’s heartening to see that corporate news no longer bows to an authoritarian administration. All the members of your news staff, including upper management and ownership, should be congratulated for asking the tough questions and not stopping until they have complete answers.

I especially liked the segments both your networks ran on how to explain torture to our children. It’s very difficult to explain to youngsters how human beings could be so cruel as to torture one another. But then again, you are the networks that explained to kids what Mr. Clinton did in his office with that intern. Thanks for caring about the little ones!

I know you had to interrupt some of your profitable reality programming to bring us update after update. I’m glad your network put civic responsibility before profits.

You’re a credit to democracy. That flag lapel pin looks damn good on you fine Americans! Hopefully you don’t mind if I throw you a salute right now, it just feels right!

    Thanks – 2mil

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll found that 70 percent of Americans disapprove of President Bush’s handling of the economy…

And this is why McCain has no hope of winning in November. McCain has no more clue about the economy than Bush does. When the pinch is so tight that many Americans, even small town Americans, can’t afford to drive to work or put a meal on the table, they are NOT going to vote for McCain. If small town America would just listen to what Obama is saying, not the 30 second cherry picked sound bytes, they will see that he does know what they are going through and he will be there to help them recover financially. Then, maybe, they can give up their obsessions with voting according to gays, guns and abortion.

That’s no surprise. The Iraq occupation has now gone on longer than WWI, WWII and Vietnam.

So…you really don’t expect to see Bush starting to follow the law now, do you? One thing the Bush Administration has made clear is how toothless many laws that affect our government are.

IMF: The Times They Are A-Changin’
    by Robert Weissman

There is overwhelming evidence of the failure of the IMF’s policy agenda. Mass privatization has led to enormous concentrations of wealth and encouraged corruption. Deregulation has contributed to financial crises, including those that foreshadowed the current global crisis centered in the United States. The overall economic model had impoverished tens of millions and left developing countries poorer. And government budget ceilings and inflation targets have prevented countries from expanding desperately needed investments in healthcare and education. Indeed, the IMF’s own Independent Evaluation Office has found that the Fund requires poor countries not meeting Fund inflation targets to divert most new donor aid. Instead of spending additional donor money on healthcare, for example, countries must use it to build up foreign reserves or pay down domestic debt.

    http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/04/14/8289/

**Mass privatization has led to enormous concentrations of wealth and encouraged corruption.
They are just now figuring that out? Yet, even with all of the evidence to the contrary, neocons contiue to find other public trust and government agencies to privatize and gouge the public with excessive profit and pretty well complete lack of regulation.

“His memoir will be released by Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin.” “This will be a story that will span my lifetime,” Rumsfeld said.

Now, that’s guaranteed to be a best seller…only with the NEOcons. Another book that the NEOcons will buy pallets of and then when they can’t give them away, will destroy rather than return. Because if they return them, the book will no longer look like a best seller.

I love it that the proceeds will go to a “non-profit” he controls. Sounds a little slimy to me.

Maliki is profoundly stupid that he doesn’t see what is going on there. His government is sitting on billions of oil revenues and is not using it to help the citizens of Iraq. If he thinks that’s how to “make friends and influence people”, he certainly doesn’t get it.

  14. barfly says:

Perhaps this is what democracy is supposed to look like in a country as factionalized as Iraq, and our interference is slowing the real thing from taking form.

Bush has compared himself to Truman in the past — now he has surpassed him in sustained unpopularity. But Bush believes he will eventually be vindicated, as Truman was.

One president Bush hasn’t compared himself to is Hoover. And that may be the best parallel.

  22. barfly says:

    From Raw Story:

A growing number of bankruptcies among US retailers is set to prompt thousands of store closings, the New York Times will report on the front page of its Tuesday edition.

“The consumer spending slump and tightening credit markets are triggering a wave of bankruptcies in American retailing,” with ensuing store closures “expected to remake suburban malls and downtown shopping districts across the country,” writes Michael Barbaro for the Times.

Barbaro notes that over half a dozen store chains have filed for bankruptcy in recent months amidst “mounting debt and plummeting sales” and warns that financial troubles are “quickly spreading to bigger national companies.”

The Times articles comes amid a slew of reports underscoring America’s economic woes. Even presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, who only months ago panned talk of a recession, admitted today that he thought the country was now in one.

Even relatively well-off retailers face troubles. Added Barbaro in the article, such store chains who can avoid bankruptcy “are shutting down stores to preserve cash through what could be a long economic downturn.”

Obama Would “Immediately Review” Potential Of Crimes In Bush White House
Tonight I had an opportunity to ask Barack Obama a question that is on the minds of many Americans, yet rarely rises to the surface in the great ruckus of the 2008 presidential race — and that is whether an Obama administration would seek to prosecute officials of a former Bush administration on the revelations that they greenlighted torture, or for other potential crimes that took place in the White House.

Obama said that as president he would indeed ask his new Attorney General and his deputies to “immediately review the information that’s already there” and determine if an inquiry is warranted — but he also tread carefully on the issue, in line with his reputation for seeking to bridge the partisan divide. He worried that such a probe could be spun as “a partisan witch hunt.” However, he said that equation changes if there was willful criminality, because “nobody is above the law.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/15/obama-would-immediately-r_n_96690.html

Ok, just what we have been waiting for. A little equivocating about “tread carefully”, but at least Obama is saying he will investigate the crimes committed by the Bush Crime Family. Go Obama!

Now, just wait for Hillary to say something similar.

Evidence is Growing: Continuity of Government Plan is CURRENTLY in Effect
“it seems to me that this administration has justified its crimes by NOT suspending the state of emergency that went up on September 11, 2001. They are using emergency powers if you look at the whole of the spying, military actions inside the US, etc. I would wager that if asked, this administration will admit that we have been in a state of emergency for their tenure in office.”

If we are in a state of emergency and COG plans are in effect, then Congress even more obviously like corporate and military lapdogs than normal and totally ignoring the will of the people would make sense. It would make sense that “impeachment is off the table”, because Congress would not even be sitting at the table under a non-constitututional COG form of government. If we are in a state of emergency and COG plans are in effect, then the corporate media’s acting even more obviously like the disinformation arm of the government than usual would make sense.

    ____________________________________________

I suspect you are confusing the Islam (the religion) with some cultural and political aspects of some predominately Muslim societies.

Women are no more repressed in Islam than they are in orthodox Judaism or fundamental Christianity. Most of what we see from our media regarding women in Muslim countries (must wear a burqa, not allowed to drive, not allowed to attend school, etc.) is not mandated by the Quran, but springs from local cultural practices. Furthermore, if you look beyond Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan, you will see that Muslim women have as much freedom as anyone else in any modern society. Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, and even Iraq do not repress women.

As far as killing gays — this also doesn’t happen everywhere. And the places where it does happen are places that deal out equally harsh punishment for adulterers and other “sinners” — not just gays.

I’m no fan of the way Saudi Arabian society operates. But I refuse to condemn a religion encompassing a fifth of the world because of it. But seriously, I recommend you finding out a little something about Islam itself. And you will see that it’s not the boogeyman here. No more than Christianity is bad just because of people like Robertson, Dobson, and Wildmon.

I agree with you that we need to reduce our dependence on oil. We are way behind in developing alternative energy sources that we will need to survive before long. This has nothing to do with making others “go broke” — it has more to do with sustaining ourselves.

As far as focusing on home and not overseas — yes, that should be our priority. However, we should not become isolationists. Getting along and interfacing with the rest of the world is necessary for survival. I made a trip to the Soviet Union before it collapsed, and I was able to see first-hand what cutting off from the rest of the world could do. It wasn’t pretty.

Republicans love of Ronald Reagan makes absolutely no sense. Reagan was for raising taxes and amnesty; these are issues that the Rupublican Party does not embrace at all now.

Ronald Reagan quote “Entrepreneurs and their small enterprises are responsible for almost all the economic growth in the United States. If he were alive today and said this; the RNC would be putting out political ads against him.

That’s no surprise. The Iraq occupation has now gone on longer than WWI, WWII and Vietnam.

Actually, the U.S. was involved in Vietnam for 15 years. We began providing military equipment and advisors in 1961, (16,000 advisors by 1963); escalation to ground troops by Johnson in 1964 and the war finally ended (for the U.S.) in 1975 when we withdrew our troops. U.S.: 58,000 dead and 153,000 wounded (my husband was one of them), no civilians killed. Vietnamese, both sides: 1.3 million combatants and 2.2 million civilians (est.)

The Iraq war has lasted nearly 6 years, and we’ve lost over 4,000 troops with 30,000 injured. We’ve been told that if an injury results in death once the troop is out of Iraq, they are not counted as deaths, and neither are suicides, so the total dead is unknown. We also don’t know how many Iraqi combatants have been killed and have very inaccurate estimates of the number of civilians killed, nor do we have numbers of injured among Iraqis. Thanks to medical advances, many of the injured, who would have died during the Vietnam era, survive. If that were not the case, we’d probably have reached 20,000 dead troops by now. If we were to stay in Iraq for 15 years, we’d end up with close to the same number of dead and wounded as in the Vietnam war. Only God knows how many civilians will die in this unnecessary Holocaust.

The only reason Vietnam went on as long as it did was due to the draft…so fight it, or we’ll be in Iraq for many more years and probably in Iran as well.

Deadly shootings have earned the state’s largest city the ominous nickname: “Killadelphia.” One of the strongest antigun control groups, the National Rifle Association, has 250,000 members in Pennsylvania, more than in any other state. This month the Pennsylvania House soundly defeated a bill to require handgun owners to report the theft or loss of their guns to police.
