The Crypt reports:
Former Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), under investigation by Justice Dept., transferred $70,000 from his campaign account to a legal defense fund, according to a filing on Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission.
The existence of a legal defense fund for Weldon, who was defeated in his bid for re-election in 2006 following disclosure of the DOJ probe, has not previously been reported. [...]
Weldon has attracted Justice Dept. scrutiny on several fronts. Following media reports about Weldon’s interaction with his daughter’s lobbying firm, her house was raided by FBI agents in October 2006, just weeks before the election.
no conviction, ever.

April 16th, 2008 at 11:54 amIs this legal? If so, it shouldn’t be.
April 16th, 2008 at 11:55 amWeldon had all sorts of shady family connection deals going on. Russian deals, Serbian deals.
His daughters were trying to get the Serb war criminal Karic family passage into the USA. The Karics are very wealthy, and many are in Canada. But the two brothers are still stuck only in Europe.
Anyway, the daughters were trying to bring the Karic Foundation, USA to the states. They went so far as to buy a residential townhouse on Capitol Hill in DC (2 6th St, NE). It was occupied by someone until the Weldon family connections to the Karics were exposed. Then it was quickly abandoned.
The house has been languishing on the for sale market for about a year and a half. Wonder who was living there.

April 16th, 2008 at 12:11 pmMr. Weldon’s relationship with the Italians has been mutually beneficial. His daughter Kim, 29, a former social worker, was hired by AgustaWestland, the Finmeccanica subsidiary that won the Marine One contract, shortly after her father’s speech in Portofino. Kim Weldon’s work is to set up booths at trade shows and perform public relations.
This is what Finmeccanica gave to Weldon after he made sure the pentagon awarded them a $1.7 Billion contract. He had been pushing this for two years.
Not sure if what he did was illegal with the transfer. But the issue is that the legal defense fund has not previously been reported. What a shock. Of that nearly $280,000 in funds that the Pennsylvania Republican had access to in 2007, Weldon has spent more than $244,000 on criminal-defense attorneys.
It sounds like he is going to need alot more donations to his legal defense fund. Oh so sad..

April 16th, 2008 at 12:33 pmI’m sure this is what the people who contributed to his campaign had in mind for that money.
**eyes rolling**
April 16th, 2008 at 2:36 pmWhat else is new Republicans have been stealing for 7 years and Americans don’t do anything but watch American Idol. Look the US is in a recession and when you ask why this story helps you see what’s going on. Every Bush staffer and GOP Law Makers are stealing as much and as fast as they can before Jan. 20th. Don’t look for the Democratic Lawmakers to do anything or the DOJ both are just in the job for a pay check.
