University of Georgia faculty are “concerned” that having Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as this year’s graduation speaker “sends the wrong message after a year of sexual harassment scandals on campus.” The announcement of Thomas as the speaker “setting off rounds of angry and frustrated e-mails between faculty members”:
“What a slap in the face this is to everyone who has been working to bring to light the realities of sexual harassment, and to establish appropriate methods and offices for addressing this significant problem on our campus,” Chris Cuomo, director of UGA’s Institute for Women’s Studies, told The Red & Black student newspaper.
Since September, three UGA professors have resigned over sexual harassment complaints.
University offers Clarence Moron a commencement address to this year's graduates ; SMU stupidly agress to house a fictional depiction of the entire Chimpy presidency.
The only thing that could actually be any more stupid than the above is if Virginia Tech asked Dickhead Cheney to be the guest speaker at a gun safety seminar on campus.............
April 21st, 2008 at 9:00 pmThe Poster boy for Sexual Harassment good choice. No worries as Clarence sees dead people will most likely just complain about his life and how he disappointed his Grandfather and Mother. Just invite Dr. Phil to help Clarence with his mental problems.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pmOk, where is the information about who actually booked this dou*che*bag to *be* commencement speaker?
*That's* where the outrage needs to be directed.
thomas without question is a controversial figure, particularly in light of the issues being mentioned re: sexual harassment at the university. Thus, it is unlikely merely a coinicidence that this particular polarizing figure was chosen to be the graduation speaker.
Someone in the university's administration wanted to make a statement, and people are outraged, so...who was this someone, and why is such a brain-dead individual allowed to be affiliated with an institution of higher learning?
April 21st, 2008 at 9:20 pmThomas doesn't speak from the bench but has no problem accepting a handsome stipend from a university for sharing his words of "wisdom."
April 21st, 2008 at 9:20 pmGood thing Rudy wasn't the graduation speaker. Being a cross-dresser, Rudy represents both genders.
Memo to UGA: Thomas is the wrong choice for graduation speaker.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:22 pmIt is insensitive of UGA to have someone like Clarence Thomas as a graduation speaker when 3 professors have resigned because of Sexual Harassment. It sounds like they are in deep denial about the problems at their University. They need to do some major housecleaning of staff causing the harassment.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:28 pmNever a shortage of people willing to give these incompetent conservatives money.
It's astounding really.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pmThomas -- Fat Tony "The Fixer" Scalia's stooge.
What's he gonna say? "Ditto?"
April 21st, 2008 at 9:32 pmIt has been reported that he is at least competent in sexual harassment. There is no reporting that he has done anything as a justice of the supreme court.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:34 pmClarence Thomas
April 21st, 2008 at 9:38 pmThe Ghost of Supreme Court Christmas past. Like Satan's accomplice he has eternal life. And we are forever burdened with it.
This is a state university and its employees are accountable for these kinds of insensitive decisions and spending tax dollars. Who did this, why, and what possible statement can they hope to make? Anita Hill was lying? (Not my opinion, but many reich wingers think so.) Read John Dean's book Broken Government for more on the confirmation of Thomas and many other lying judges. Somebody with a lot of power to spend a lot of money invited him. More likely, a committee of such somebodies did this in a secret meeting. I want names.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:51 pmThree sexist profs resigned? Clarence the porno king of the SC will gladly grab ass on those pretty Georgia Peaches. Amazing resume: worst justice ever and sex criminal.
April 21st, 2008 at 10:03 pmWill Clarence "Uncle" Thom-ass accept any Coke Cans or "Rear his Ugly Head"
April 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pmMany years ago, I had an interview with an EEOC employee soon after the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas with Anita Hill testifying. (I was called in for a routine interview because my employer had had a checkered history.) At the end of the interview, I asked the EEOC employee, You work at EEOC, where Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill both worked. Tell me, who would your coworkers say was telling the truth, Clarence Thomas or Anita Hill?
The EEOC employee said "Anita Hill told the truth."
April 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pmI guess Pee's evil twin just doesn't remember the whole Anita Hill incident -- how convenient...
April 21st, 2008 at 11:46 pmThe insensitivity by the selection committee just boggles the mind. This probably shows why the University of Georgia has had a rash of sexual harrassment charges given the tone deafness of those running the school. The good old boys are still in charge, sadly.
April 21st, 2008 at 11:53 pmSince it'll be a short speech, there'll be time for audience members to offer their opinion -- in the form of boos/jeers.
America in action: Freedom to invite, freedom to appear, freedom to express displeasure.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:28 amPerhaps it was hoped that the local scandals would fade in the light of a visit by the luminary Long Dong Silver and his famous can of cola?
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:53 amShould be an interesting speech considering he hasn't spoken in over three years.
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:55 amI can't believe the false outrage! Could it be the objection has more to do with the conservative tilt of his opinions? Would all of you who express concern over the unproven allegations of sexual harrassment have the same opinion if it were BILL CLINTON who was asked to speak? I think not.
April 22nd, 2008 at 8:30 amLet's face it, the left would prefer to silence the right rather that compete in the arena of ideas.
>Let’s face it, the left would prefer to silence the right >rather that compete in the arena of ideas.
you call it competing, I call it appealing to the lowest common denominator. you believe its ok to lie to people and call it news, simply because its what people want to hear and thus gets ratings? fox news does, and theyve asserted their right to lie and call it "news" in court..
April 22nd, 2008 at 8:57 amOk, Johnjohn.... a few points of rebuttal:
"false outrage" nice of you to assign a level of truth to another persons opinion. (wasn't aware you'd been appointed keeper of truth)
"Unproven allegations" the allegations were, in fact, proven albeit not in a court of law, (as formal legal charges were not brought) but certainly in the court of public opinion.
And, of course....you predictably trot out Bill Clinton. What is it about the Right Wing that must ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS bring Bill Clinton into a conversation? Notably when he's not even remotely the subject?
It is as if you can't have a reasoned discussion on the merits of a point of view with out "boogie man Bill" being foisted onto the page.
I note you didn't bother to actually denounce Clarence Thomas' actions, or offer a rebuttal to the charges leveled at him. Perhaps you agree with him and his view of women? You wouldn't be the first GOP supporter who thinks women are fine, as long as they 'know their place'....
It's folks like you and your inane habit of dumbing down everyone who's view you don't agree with that made me stop supporting the GOP.
As for Thomas, the man at best is a cad, and has no business being at the UGA as a commencement speaker.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:06 amNo "false outrage" here. Mine is real.
Thomas is incompetent, a liar, mentally unstable & very bitter.
Arena of ideas? war is good, global warming is a hoax, science is bad, intelligent design is good, regulation is bad, markets will work, economy is strong, surge is working, Bush elected twice ...
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:26 amThomas has to be the dumbest person in the USSC ever.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:03 amdjk's evil b:
Thomas is a very stupid person, his stances on equal rights for woman while ON the USSC are deplorable.
He's part of the decision to tell women they only have 6 months to complain about pay differential even if then don't know it's happening.
That's asinine to the nth degree.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:08 amWhy pay thomas for his opinions ? Just invite his puppet master Scalia(?). Thomas hasn't had an opinion since he's b een on the supreme court of fools.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:19 amtake care
