During a press conference today with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon, a reporter asked President Bush “how deep and how long will the economic recession be in the United States?” “First of all, we’re not in a recession,” Bush replied, adding, “We’re in a slowdown.” Watch it:
While Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke recently said U.S. GDP “will not grow much, if at all, over the first half of 2008 and could even contract slightly,” it is also “hard to find an economist who doesn’t believe the US is either in recession or so close it’s not worth arguing about” as a recent Wall Street Journal poll of economists found.

April 22nd, 2008 at 5:40 pmHow much you wanna bet, if Obama is elected, every repub out there will be claiming that we are in a full recession by february? Of course, according to the standard repub thinking, there is nothing wrong with our economy, but the stimulus package will fix it.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm“A rose, by any other name…”
We don’t “torture,” we use “Enhanced Interrogation.”
We’re not in a “recession,” we’re in a “slow down.”
News flash, Mr. Bush. Calling a Cougar a House Cat will not keep it from disembowling you.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pmChimpy just misspoke. He thought the question was “how long will we be in recess”. Chimpy knew it wasn’t time for recess because that is when he gets to take off his tie and go clear brush.

April 22nd, 2008 at 5:43 pmIt sure would be nice if ‘a reporter’ would bring up the facts of the situation directly after his denial. Repeatedly, until he had no choice but to admit that he is either wrong or must have lied . . I mean ‘mis-spoke’.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:43 pmYes, it’s a “sustained slow down”. Just like there is a “pause” (end) in troop withdrawels and they conduct “enhanced interrogation” (torture) on “enemy combatants (brown people).
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:43 pmBush — you’re totally out of touch — just as fooolish and lame in dancing as are your assessments of the economy.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:44 pmJust shut up and slink away.
If George W. Bush were a medical doctor, he would probably inform the grieving family that their loved one was not in fact dead, but just suffering from extremely low blood pressure.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:44 pmInfamous quotes of GW:
“We are not in a recession”
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:48 pm“We are winning in Iraq”
“We do not torture”
Time to check in with an Abraham Lincoln quote:
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:48 pm“How many legs does a dog have if you call a tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it one.” Calling a recession a slowdown doesn’t make it one.
Impeach Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

Are we in a Bush Recession or a Bush Depression? You decide…
O/T, Will Rove and the Republican voting machine operatives let Obama will in Pennsylvania? Stay tuned… Check out bradblog and block box voting web sites for more information on painless invisible computerized election theft in your State.
We have a stark choice: either return to the tried-and-true tradition of hand-counted paper ballots in our elections or eles suffer Republican electronic fascism…
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:50 pmWhen posters on here have to resort to name calling when it comes to President Bush, they obviously are very emotional and hateful.
Why the negativity on this board, cant you guys have a civil discussion?
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:53 pmI can almost see the Preznit sitting in an economic meeting with his fingers in his ears saying “La La La La La La”.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:55 pmWhen did the definition of a recession change? Bush is telling the truth!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:55 pmFck Bush in the ass until he bleeds to death.
Civil enough for you?
If you don’t understand the negativity after 7 years of Bush tearing this country apart, you are not a real American.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:55 pmOf course we’re not in a recession. He’ll fudge the number to say we aren’t http://www.shadowstats.com/. More of this regime’s “creating their own reality”.

April 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 pmAfter failing the right to be on Are you smarter then a 5th grader we are to believe this idiot knows what he’s talking about. It’s his two best friends talking in his ear. Yes Mr. Jack Daniels/Mr. Weed are the ones giving Bush his information. Now the World sees we’re in a recession and Americans are feeling the recession but an idiot drunken druggie President Bush says it’s not happening. No wonder Daddy Bush is always crying over his idiot son. I wonder are Barbara/George H.W related because their kids seem messed up.
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 pmDoes this fuçk head just deny everything?
And thank you for $4.ºº a gal. gasoline, A$$hole.

That is a fact. Barbra was pleading with Dumbya to please let Jeb be the next King. When W heard that, he was gonna be Preznit even if he had to steal the election – which he did. And to think some on the right side wanted a Bush dynasty.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:00 pmBush claimed he “inhereted” a “recession”–the exact term–around June 2001, a month before he went on vacation.
Bush claimed that 9-11 added to that “recession” (and though I personally felt the economic impact of 9-11, Bush completely exagerrated its national effects–indeed ex-Mayor 9iul1iani sure profited from it and so did many others).
With no-one else to blame for the current econmic situation–record national debt, dollar at a 30 year low, unemployment rising, depressed average real wages, trade deficit at a record, housing starts at 20+ year lows, foreclosures at 20+-year highs, ALL AFTER HIS F—ING TAX CUTS, it follows that he would REFUSE to admit REALITY, now more than ever.

April 22nd, 2008 at 6:05 pmBecause I’m the DECIDER – AND I SAY SO!!!!!
Good grief.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:07 pmThe economic indicators defining recession are all retrospective in nature, ie we will not say definitively that we are in a depression until well after it has actually started. However, the statement of the President was stupid. The indicators are all pointing to a recession, probably one that has already started.

Of course, and most of us do. At the time of your post, I could only see one poster who had engaged in anything that could be remotely considered “name calling” — and that was paleolib referring to Bush as “Chimpy” in post #4. From this, you are condemning the entire board as negative, and you are accusing posters (plural) of name calling.
First, I recommend you accurately size up the situation before you over-dramatize it. Second, please understand that those of us who ARE civil (that would be most of us) are so despite the downright UNcivil conduct of our leaders who have trampled on the country and constitution we hold dear. And third, those of us who may not meet your personal standards of civility are letting off steam from our frustrations in an acceptable outlet.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:10 pmCheney hasn’t yet told him it’s ok to say it’s a recession.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:11 pmBush is delusional. Someone needs to have him under constant psychiatric observation or he might hurt himself or the country.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:15 pmZed Lefflin Says:
Things are tough here in PA. My neighbor who works for Hershys as a fudge packer just got laid off. This is good news however as he is saving a lot on gas AND with Bush’s rebate check soon to be mailed out everything will be just fine …… according to him.
And here in So Cal, gas is at $4.10 a gallon (91 octane). Unemployment is higher here (+/- 6%) and the cost of living is also higher here – so we get whacked from both sides of the ledger.
Before any multi-millionaires tell me our economy is not started into recession, I would rather ask folks who work for a living what they think.
It sure feels like a recession.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:16 pmOMFG. This has got to be the stupidest man on the face of the plant.
Even people that have no debt (or minimal debt) are feeling the effects of this recession. Who does he think he’s snowjobbing?
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:17 pmyou cut it off too soon… i heard a clip on the radio and he sounded drunk…
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:21 pmor high… i wondered if he looked that way too…
Dinkledonk is right for once if by “slowdown” he means “depression.”
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:22 pmThe increased price of gas sets off a domino effect when you consider that pretty much everything we consume gets trucked into the stores. And then we drive the stuff to our houses.
So if the price of gas rises, that is one thing – but it doesn’t stop there. Look for the fruits and veggies to increase pretty quickly (by summer), and then look for heavier food staples to increase in price (like wheat, barley, rice, oats, and other food made of grains.). Now add to that the increased electricity bills during the summer. It might be a good idea to grow your own, if you can.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:22 pmHoly Shite! I normally don’t watch the vids of the monkey in chief or the dark lord, it’s too painful. But my gawd, this one was peerice-less! Didja see the startled look on the monkey’s face and then his urgent scribbling like he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to answer the question?
Just when I thought he couldn’t possibly appear any dumber…
Wow!
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:22 pmLook at him! It is clear he mentally checked out a long time ago. It is one reason why I don’t think the US will attack Iran. It woulb be too much propaganda work for Dinkledunk to do to “justify” another war.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:24 pmWhy do we, as a nation, tolerate this?
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:27 pmI especially want to slap him each time he does that head bob thing.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:32 pmBush: “First of all, we’re not in a recession” Blame his comments on Jack Daniels. Pass the popcorn please….
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:39 pmIs our economies tankin’?
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:46 pmWell, when the raccoon outside my office window eats better than me I say were in a recession.

tony and guidedog Lido
I’m very impressed with the President’s ability to listen to what appeared to be three separate questions from the reporter without once interrupting or farting.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:53 pmOh, is he still talking? I hadn’t noticed.
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:10 pmI guess my discourse would appear more “civil” if a worthless, retarded, assnugget (and his band of thieves) were not driving my beloved country to ruin. Perhaps I would sound less “negative” if they hadn’t pissed away the credibility we spent our entire history accumulating. And I wouldn’t sound “hateful” if Bushco hadn’t done so much to earn our hate and contempt.
This pathetic excuse for a man, and his ilk, deserve no mercy or consideration from those who have been unwillingly made party to his crimes. The English language doesn’t have the words to adequately convey the disgust and loathing I feel every time a Bushite opens their lying mouth.
So, if you don’t like people saying “mean things” about Bushco, the neocons, the religious right and the GOP? KICK THE SCUM OUT OF YOUR PARTY! STOP EXCUSING THEIR CRIMES! AND HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE!
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:16 pmBush: ‘We’re not in a recession.’

April 22nd, 2008 at 7:40 pmJust like “reaganomics”, Bush will be known as the “Recession-omic” president along with all of the other horrible names he will be called.
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:45 pmBesides, what the heck is this lamedick(whoops, sorry for the typo – meant “lameduck”) president lying about now????
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:46 pmDoes anyone believe that GW Botch and Dick(head)”Smog” Chimney have been releasing reliable numbers about our economy/war/pollution/corruption/war-mongering profits/deficit and racism for the past 7 years?
Not at all! It’s much worse than you’ve been told by the MSM.
You’ve been raped by the RePugniScums! Hope you like it!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:48 pmbush can clain what he wants, but the truth is that he has presided over two recessions during his “tenure” in office. How many other presidents can make that claim? If there is one, he’s undoubtedly a republican.
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:59 pmWe’re not in a recession, we’re just experiencing economic times only a millionaire could love.
/sarcasm
April 22nd, 2008 at 8:04 pmItried to comment but ……Bush commenting on the economy is about as reliable and accurate as his ability to “lead” our country. BWTF do I know? An AWOL ass who should never have gotten a dishonorable discharge much less being even able to run for public office. Someone please tell me how ANYONE can go AWOL from our Armed Services and get away with it, it just doesn’t happen!! My Dad didn’t spend 2 years in a Korean Prison of War Camp so some worthless piece of crap can run for public office much less the Presidency. Good Grief am I the only one outraged by the abortion known as the bush Presidency??

April 22nd, 2008 at 9:12 pmThat is not a hot poker jammed up your ass. It is just a poker jammed up your ass.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:32 pmBush uses doublespeak instead of policy. That’s as hard as the stupid, hungover fool is willing to work.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:42 pmThis idiot has the nerve to say this country is not in a recession. What a feak this loser is turning out to be! Jobs keep disappearing, we’re paying almost $4 at the gas pump, airlines are failing, the same dollar we’ve so hard for is worth less and less as we speak. The weird-assed-idiot-freak keeps digging himself deeper and deeper with his lies.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:54 pmWe are very close to a major, long, depression. Bush is living in la-la land. He is a freak. He is a criminal. He must be impeached.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:01 pmthere are weapons of mass recession in the country…..
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:18 pmTsk. Drunk again.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:35 pm“First of all, we’re not in a recession,” Bush replied, adding, “We’re in a slowdown.”
I’m certain that playing semantics is going to fix the problem , you grinning , lying , stupid , brainless jackass………….
April 22nd, 2008 at 11:01 pmwell, clapping for Tinkerbell works so well in the corporate world…..
April 22nd, 2008 at 11:24 pmOne of my candidates for Great Moments in Economics:
Alfred Kahn, one of Jimmy Carter’s economic advisers, was talking publicly about the possibility of a recession. He was rebuked by Carter, who said he was scaring people with talk of a recession.
So when Kahn next spoke to the press, he said “Yes, I think we are on the verge of a serious banana.”
It’s a whole bunch of serious bananas these days.
April 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pmWhy didn’t my previous post make it? Was it because of my swearing?
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:48 amOne definition of a recession is “a decline in GDP for two or more consecutive quarters”. Insisting that this is the one and only correct definition of a recession would be just as stupid as saying (hypothetically speaking) that a cold must last at least 24 hours before it can officially be called a cold.
