Thomas Breaks Press’s 14 Day Silence On Bush’s Torture Approval, Chides Colleagues: ‘Where Is Everybody?’

On April 9, ABC News reported that in 2002, President Bush’s most senior advisers approved the use of harsh interrogation tactics. Days later, Bush confirmed to ABC he “approved” of the tactics. Sadly, the media have largely ignored the story since it was first reported. Moreover, not one White House press corps reporter has raised the issue with the Bush administration…until today.

During this afternoon’s White House press briefing, reporter Helen Thomas noted that Bush “has admitted that he did sign off on torture” saying it damages “the credibility of this country.” But press secretary Dana Perino denied that the United States has ever tortured detainees and referred to testimony from CIA Director Michael Hayden as evidence:

THOMAS: The president has said [...] we do not torture. Now he has admitted that he did sign off on torture, he did know about it. So how do you reconcile this credibility gap? [...]

PERINO: The United States has not, is not torturing any detainees in the global war on terror. And General Hayden, amongst others, have spoken on Capitol Hill fully in this regard. [...] And you can go back through all the public record.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/04/thomaswhereis.320.240.flv]

In fact, during a February 5 Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Hayden said outright that “waterboarding has been used” on three detainees in U.S. custody. But Hayden has refused to label waterboarding “torture,” calling it a “legal term” which seems to fit nicely with the Bush administration’s self-serving narrowed legal definition.

But waterboarding is torture and illegal under both U.S. and international law – with experts, government officials and those who have been subject to the harsh treatment all agreeing.

Seeming to acknowledge her colleagues’ absence on this story, an exasperated Thomas said out loud after her exchange with Perino: “Where is everybody? For God’s sakes.”

Digg It!

I second that motion, although I think the posters here have declared this already many times…oh well, it can’t hurt to do it again right? GO HELEN! You give us all hope!

  5. Shayne says:

We have ONE actual reporter left in this whole pathetic country. If we ever get our country back we should run all these actors playing the part of news people out of town on a rail straight to Gitmo.

  7. raynman says:

The problem is that Helen Thomas represents what the media used to be, and always was supposed to be, asking the tough questions. But, today’s media is about ratings and looking good and laughing it up with the people you’re supposed to be investigating.

I don’t think the current regime created this mess, but they surely have taken advantage of it….

  8. robbez_92107 says:

Keep turning the screws on this lying airhead mouthpiece, Helen!
The American people DO want to know the truth, and we sure won’t get it from Dana Purina.

  9. moondancer says:

That smug cunt. Perrino stands there and lies through her capped teeth, and acts condescendingly to Thomas who as more character in one toe than Dana does in her whole body.

  10. RUCerious says:

Obama’s first duty as the 44th President? Give Helen Thomas the Freedom Medal for standing up to this Hole in the Head gang.

  11. leftcoast says:

There goes Helen’s WH Press Pass.
The WH Press corps, for the most part, worry about access, therefore they don’t go for the jugular. But, what good is access if there is nothing to report but the WH Bushit line?
Thank god for Helen, and for all the years of service she’s given this country.

  12. lokidog says:

An 87 year old woman is defending this country and the US Constitution with more courage than the gutless f***s and criminals in the WH.

Helen Thomas makes me remember what it used to be like when the press actually had patriots working the “wires” and who understood what our founding fathers intended with the 1st Amendment.

Thank you Helen for being the REAL patriot in the White House!

  13. galmud says:

    “Where is everybody?”

    Indeed. Where are the journalists?

  14. misshusseinmolly says:

It’s a pity that Helen Thomas is one of the few real journalists we have left. All the newbies in the field seem to be ratings whores who would much rather report on Obama’s pastor or Hillary’s “cackling laugh” than about the United States’ use of torture.

Journalism is dead. Seducing the audience with shiny, sparkly objects in order to make a profit has replaced it.

  15. Leporello says:

We’re talking about Bushworld, where lies are truth and truths are irrelevent. For two weeks the Entire White House press corps kept looking at shiny objects. Hellen Thomas Finally showed the World what a Reporter’s supposed to do! I’m afraid that it won’t make much of an impression with the neophytes that try to pass themselves of as real reporters, but at least Somebody spoke the truth to power.
Impeach Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

OOH they’re around, waiting to see who the next POTUS is, and if its a Dem they will ALL OF A SUDDEN find their collective spines and become the investigative and hard hitting people they should be. But if John McSame becomes the POTUS, they’ll be at the White House Cookouts “lapping” it up.

What has happened to responsible journalism?

    Never mind.

    Helen is a noble instituion.

  20. Jane E. Schneider says:

This maladministration probably feels that, at age 87, Helen probably won’t be annoying them much longer. As long as they can keep lying and denying, and as long as the rest of the gaggle of geese otherwise known as the White House Press Corps stays mute, these criminals can just ride out the next several months of their crime spree.

  21. TheToonGuy says:

“Where is everybody? For God’s sakes.”

They’re eating ribs at McCain’s or at Duncan Donuts ordering a dozen with sprinkles for the man they love so much they cannot hear a word he says or see a single thing he does.

  22. celtic cynic says:

I’m sure we’ll see complete coverage of the exchange between Thomas and Perino on the network news tonight.

  23. MCMetal says:

Ya know , it goes much deeper than “Journalism”.

Where the fu(king hell is everyone to tell an empty-headed bimbo who doesn’t know the difference between the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis that her imbecilic boss did indeed sign off on torture and ADMITTED TO IT and that she is looking foolish and treating an elderly woman with severe disrespect ?

If they are too cowardly to question the Chimpy administration themselves , at least have the damn decency to treat an elderly woman properly ………Sheesh.

  24. Freedom Rebel says:

A real question?? The other journalist were stumped by that. That is not in the current playbook for the White House Press Corps. A real question requires an honest answer. We can’t have that now in the Bush Administration were everyday we deceive, lie, prevaricate, cover up and manipulate.

Congratulations Helen for not succumbing to business as usual on Capital Hill!!!

  25. Buckie Boy says:

You are the only real Jouranlist there Helen, the rest are suck ups and stenographers for the Bush Corrupt Whitehouse.

Water Torture is a WAR CRIME, do not use the term “Water boarding”, this is Bush speak to make it sound like a game or something.

The only reporter there with some balls…go figure.

  26. LividLib says:

“Where is everybody? For God’s sakes.”

Oh come on, Helen! They have far more important matters to concern themselves with than the president authorizing torture! Lapel pins, for example.
    Geesh!

Helen Thomas – a true dedicated reporter not afraid of this Administration, have followed her work for years, we should all appreciate her stance………….Perino continues to push the lies of the Whitehouse – May God Help the United States………………………our Constitution continues to be scorned.

Sorry, I’m a littlet late to the picnic here, but after reading the story, this was my very first thought! Absolutely a NATIONAL TREASURE! And the other stenographers in the press corps are a national tragedy!

They should all hang their collective heads in shame and then pull themselves up by the bootstraps and DO THE RIGHT THING!

  30. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

God I love Helen Thomas. It seems like she is the only reporter left in the world. Where is everybody? They are all serving their corporate lords and masters and attending McBush BBQ’s.

The problem is that Barbie Dana rarely calls on her. I really do wish that some of the other reporters would occasionally say “I defer this question to Helen”.

  34. MJP says:

God Bless you, Helen! Your patriotism is above reproach.

  39. Evergreen2U says:

    Helen Thomas is my hero.

But don’t be fooled. The remainder are not journalists, they are hacks. Complicit in the selling out of America and the American people.

I get so mad I could spiiiit!

  40. ennealogic says:

I guess it all depends on what the definition of Torture is.

Man, I long for the days when we could debate the definition of the word IS. Now, we have a bimbo at the podium who artfully denies that we have ever tortured, are torturing, or will torture, thanks to the re-definition of the word.

This is not the country I grew up in, nor the country I believe in. Makes me sick, sick, sick.

  41. pete says:

I’ve said it before, and Helen Thomas is probably too much the lady, but I would love to see her hock a giant loogie in Dana Perino’s face. What a smug, condescending, little tart (NOTE: Tart was not my first choice).

  42. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Hey, TP, how about setting up a Pay-Pal account for donations to and in honor of Helen Thomas. She deserves a statue somewhere in Washington, D.C. or at least a great vacation anywhere out of Washington, D.C. on us.

  43. questioneverything says:

    “Screw that

  44. celtic cynic says:

Is it true that Dana Perino has to go through decontamination before being allowed into her family’s house at the end of the day?
She must stink really bad after telling all those lies.

  45. whiteyfresh says:

I want Helen Thomas to stand up, turn around at the next briefing, and hand a ROYAL ASS WHUPPIN to that wobbly,weak-kneed ,pathetic group of spineless jellyfish call the white house press corp!!!

  46. whiteyfresh says:

I second PLC!!!! somebody start a moneybomb for Helen. We owe that lady more than we can ever offer.

  47. scytherius says:

She is SO correct. however, America is a horrible, terrorist nation. It cares about no one except it’s major corporations and the slaves they employ (99% of this country). This is a Government without morals. it could give two hoots in Hell that it tortures. All empires fall and this is the end of the American Empire. Be sure and thank your local Dem AND Republican. Those who took impeachment “off the table” are just as guilty as those who should be impeached. What a useless country we have become.

  48. SP Biloxi says:

Bubblehead Barbie Perino is full of it. Go Helen!

  49. Marie says:

Helen Thomasd is the last of the journalists as they once were — what we have now are paid lapdogs, preening fools, an incarnate cadre of Tom Grunicks.

  50. Nevar says:

The rest of the cowering press corps is afraid of being extraordinarily renditioned.

  51. Marie says:

My recent letter to the Daily newspaper on this very topic was finally printed today. This was my humble and small effort to rouse some attention to this matter — because the press is brain-dead!!

  52. G.W.SuperChrist says:

    Which is saddest?
    a. An administration that tortures

    c. A democratic congress that refuses to do anything about it

  57. Loonie says:

THOMAS: The president has said […] we do not torture. Now he has admitted that he did sign off on torture, he did know about it. So how do you reconcile this credibility gap? […]

    By lying.

  58. Marie says:

    #58 –
    Great list.
    Copied and printed.

  59. Zooey says:

Let me guess. After this great woman said, “Where is everybody? For God’s sakes.”

    This was the sound….**crickets**

  60. sacopenapa says:

How can Perino deny what everybody knows???? How can she mantain her ugly face despite the facts????? Everyone from this criminal administration lies everytime the open their mouths. Bimbo Perino should get a year in prison for giving the American people LIES! Thank you Helen Thomas!!!!!!! Perino, go to hell!

  61. Brain From Planet Arous says:

  62. Max-1 says:

    I’m with Helen…

Where is everybody else? And why does this story, if covered at all, relegated to a post script buried behind the headlines as if it’s an afterthought? When the headline is, plain and simple… The Bush Administration are War Criminals.

  63. frenchfries says:

It’s heartbreaking how sad she’s looking here. To her it must be like one of these nightmares where you cry out loud and nobody hears you. Nobody even notices you.

Man, she’s earned her place in history. (You hear that, Dubya?!) An 87-year old woman! You couldn’t invent a story like that.

  64. jaramilr says:

Out of the litany of horrible things that the Bush administration has done, authorizing torture is, in my opinion, the very worst. I am continuously amazed that the press and the American people are not outraged by the actions of the President. If torture doesn’t get people’s attention, is there anything that will?

Perino is quick to dismiss Ms. Thomas’s questions as if she were her old crazy grandma. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if she were dismissed instead because there were too many others asking similar questions?

Helen Thomas is great and has a long list of accomplishments, but it doesn’t take all that to accomplish the same thing in a press conference. Any one of those jokers could ask the same things.

  65. Evergreen says:

I used the above contact list and emailed the first 20. I received almost all back as undeliverable. What’s up?

Helen Thomas is truly a patriot! A patriot is someone who questions the way the 3 branches of government are administering the Constitution. Counter to dubya’s efforts to demonize all who criticize, Helen’s questions have been a voice of reason in the dark. She’s right – where are all the other voices, you know, the ones who call themselves journalists. She should have a day named for her.

  66. Howl says:

Helen Thomas stands up to power! More power to Helen!

The problem is that our media are run by the corporate entities that own them. Open worldwide communication is our ally in all that we wish to change and accomplish. Economics and the protection of bottom-line profits rule global economics and governments around the world. Media around the world are owned by the same mega-entities that push the global economic agenda.

    Conflict of interest?

Awareness and communication can change the world. The fight for independent media is worth every moment of the effort. And the establishment of alternative forms of open global communication is our most powerful tool to prevent complete shroud.

  67. Doremus_Jessup says:

Helen Thomas has more courage than the other press corp. Her clarity of mind at 87 is refreshing to witness. Keep fighting for the rest of your fellow citizens Helen. Even if things are uncomfortable, we need a freedom of the press and expression.

  68. joshuamckenty says:

There are a bunch of folks raising money for “Flowers for Truth”, sending bouquets of flowers to Helen, delivered to the White House Press Room. You can contribute at:

    http://www.bountyup.com/bounty/Flowers+for+Helen+Thomas%2C+White+House+Reporter

    or the ChipIn site:

    http://flowersforhelenthomas.chipin.com/helen-thomas-deserves-some-flowers

Please tell your friends as well – if it’s a ridiculous-enough number of flowers, it’ll draw some media attention to this whole mess.

  69. BigCynicDotCom says:

One of the last of a generation of journalists who actually do the job of a journalist — as opposed to today’s media conglomerate employees who are an extension of the White House press secretary’s office. She works for the people, they work for the shareholders. That’s the difference between a healthy democracy and a nation slowly sliding down the slope to fascism.
