Reporters press McCain over Hagee endorsement.

Reporters press McCain over Hagee endorsement.»

Yesterday, ThinkProgress highlighted a recent interview by Pastor John Hagee, in which he declared that New Orleans was struck by Hurricane Katrina because it was “planning a sinful” “homosexual rally.” We wondered, “will reporters ask whether [McCain] agrees with Hagee’s belief that the devastated city was cursed because of a gay pride parade?” Today, they did. Both NBC Nightly News and CNN aired segments on McCain’s attempts to distance himself from Hagee. But as NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell reported, “McCain did not reject the Hagee endorsement, but denounced the pastor’s words.” Watch a compilation:

Sounds like he is copying Obama with his explanation of Wright

There have been a lot of McBush threads, haven’t there.

  5. Merlin Says:

So how long will the conventional media stay with this story? As long as they have with Obama?

  6. Nevar Says:

The voters who are ignorant enough to believe what Hagee espouses; are dumb enough to believe McCain gives a rats ass about their fantasy beliefs.
This is a repeat performance of Bush and his “born again” BS to the evangelicals.

    Let us review.

Rev. Wright works within the framework of the UCC and is subject to peer review. After perusing just about everything I could find, about Rev. Wright, I came up with the same 30 seconds of, expertly and maliciously edited, video in the negative column. When the video is viewed in context it becomes far less “negative”.

Pastor Hagee formed his own church/denomination which reflects his personal interpretation of scripture. No peer review. He’s been implicated in financial scandals. He has devoted books to the subject of eliminating Islam. Repeatedly calls the Catholic Church the “great whore”. Blames Katrina on the gays. Calls for preemptive strikes on Iran and other Muslim nations. Calls unconditional military support for Israel, including attacking those who threaten Israel, “God’s foreign policy” while regretting that all the Jews are going to Hell. Tells his congregation, including young children, that they MUST accept Jesus as their Lord and Master, or, burn in Hell forever. Has been widely known for years as a hateful radical who will do everything in his power to hasten the Rapture. I have yet to see a positive comment from anyone who isn’t part of his congregation or seeking his endorsement.

Conclusion? I wouldn’t ever trust John Hagee around kids, weapons, or my wallet. On the other hand, I would trust Rev.Wright with power of attorney, or the care of children, without hesitation.

I’m tired of the candidates’ witch doctors. I really don’t care which rattles they use or whether they play with goat guts as opposed to chicken guts.

She must be behaving and not trying to committed suicide. They haven’t had to take her to the hospital lately.

I know what you mean, with McCain it is the same thing day in and day out. If anything that man is consist at being insensitive, uncompassionate, male chauvinist pig of the century. God I feel better now….

P.S. Hope you had a good day, it was beautiful in Ohio today…

Great post, pete. Offers some perspective on this topic, which is unfortunately settling into a narrow meme.

Hagee’s remarks about the Great Whore Catholicism and Katrina Wrath of God is getting all the attention now. But realistically, Hsgee and his endtime, fundamentalist group’s persistent support of AIPAC policy toward Israel is doing even more to harm to the world. If you want to see some chilling examples of this part of his ministry check out Bill Moyers website: psg.org/moyers. Moyers did an excellent story on hagee and his group - it was repeated recently and should still be accessible. Chilling, vile and loathesome.

Well, since McCain is the only part of the Presidential campaign that TP will cover, get used to it. I’m not spending a lot of time around here these days. I’m spending most of my time at Daily Kos and Huffington Post because neither of them are ignoring the Democratic race for the nomination.

I’m wondering that TP will do when Hillary loses. Do you think they will get into such a snit they will refuse to cover the presidential campaign? If so, they will certainly be shooting themselves in the foot. This is the only “progressive” blog site I have found that is ignoring Obama/Hillary.

Actually, I would be fine with the rapture, as long as they only took the “believers” and left the rest of us to hell alone. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world without all those fundie Republicans?

I had an email from Faiz, and he said due to tax reasons they were not allowed to get into coverage of the primaries, because they can’t risk appearing to endorse anyone. I’m hoping that after the nomination (or after one Dem drops out), TP will cover the elections properly.

Thanx radika. As someone who has been gravely concerned, about the machinations of the Religious Right, since the first time I saw Reagan humping Fallwell’s leg, Moyer’s piece wasn’t news. But it was very well done. And I’m pretty sure that the show is available through PBS.org.

    Chilling, vile and loathsome indeed.

I’ve been sick today, so ugh. It started out a nice day, but now it’s windy and cold — again. The tree outside my window isn’t even budding yet. :(

  21. AngryOne Says:

Still absent from the media discussion about John McCain and his supporter the End-Times Pastor Hagee is the question of conflict with Iran. Given his own tough talk toward Tehran, does John McCain agree with Pastor John Hagee that war with Iran is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy?

    For the details, see:
“McCain, Hagee and the Media’s Missing Question on War with Iran.”

  22. galmud Says:

So McCain gets away with saying “Its nonsense I dont have anything more to say” while Obama has to give a whole damn speech?

Ok so Hagee is not McCains pastor but he did seek his endorsement, and when it comes to crazy, vile, hateful, outrageous, fundamentalist, fearmongering outright scary statements Wright is not even on the same planet as Hagee.

A friend of mine is fond of the saying: “I’d be happy to buy that dumb (expletive!) a ticket on the Rapture Bus”.

On the other hand. These freaks are just crazy enough to kill several billion people to make it happen.

The Pope recently chastised America for it’s treatment of blacks and indians (I think he meant native Americans).

Is McCain going to condemn the Catholics?

  29. Max-1 Says:

    .

So, NOLA isn’t a part of America because, as it seems, Hagee knows that God damned NOLA, at least… NO?
