Conservative House Candidate In Indiana Defends Speaking To Nazi Group On Hitler’s Birthday

On Sunday, Tony Zirkle — who is seeking the Republican nomination in Indiana’s 2nd Congressional district — delivered a speech to the American National Socialist Workers Party (ANSWP) on the 119th anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s birth. At the event, Zirkle “stood in front of a painting of Hitler, next to people wearing swastika armbands and with a swastika flag in the background.”

Asked by reporters why he spoke to a group like ANSWP, which refers to itself as “the largest and most active pro-white organization in America,” Zirkle said he’ll “speak before any group that invites me,” adding that he’s even “spoken on an African-American radio station in Atlanta.”

Zirkle told The News-Dispatch that he doesn’t “know enough about the group” to say whether he agrees with it’s ideology or not:

When asked if he was a Nazi or sympathized with Nazis or white supremacists, Zirkle replied he didn’t know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it.

Watch a local CBS affiliate’s report on Zirkle’s speech:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/04/ZirkleGOPNazi.320.240.flv]

2008 is not the first time Zirkle has sought the 2nd district seat. In both 2004 and 2006, he challenged then-incumbent Chris Chocola. In 2006, Zirkle pulled in 30% of the Republican primary vote, despite calling for a return of the guillotine.

Since at least this past March, when Zirkle suggested that “the United States should debate segregating by race,” the local Republican Party has been trying to distance itself from Zirkle.” “The ‘R’ next to Tony Zirkle’s name does not stand for ‘Republican,’” said St. Joseph County Republican Chairman Chris Riley. “It stands for ‘repulsive.’”

Update Earlier this year, Zirkle tried to officially make “Hvfvgpd” his middle name, but filed his candidacy under just "Tony Zirkle" because the GOP had tried to throw him "off the ballot" in two previous elections.

Wow — an African-American radio station in Atlanta is a bigger eyebrow-raiser than a group like ANSWP?

Zirkle, you have some really bizarre values. And to say that you “don’t know enough about the group” to form an opinion tells us that you are either lying and covering up an extreme racist ideology, or you’re a complete idiot. Either way, you’re not fit to hold office. I just hope the good folks from South Bend to Kokomo and the surrounding area realize that.

But this is different because it is a republican.

So what “group of people” is Obama associating himself with that is offensive to you? The only thing I see the Republicans harping on is individuals that Obama associates himself with (like Wright and Ayres), not a group which is the case with this nut job.

Obama has a pastor who said maybe three things people find offensive in a 30 year career of preaching and that makes Obama somehow unpatriotic. Obama sits on a charity board with Ayres who 20 years ago was associated with the Weather Underground, so that means that Obama agrees with the stated purpose of that group (which no longer exists).

Now, if Obama had spoken to a group who support white supremacy, or a group that supported black supremacy, that would be a different story and no one here would support him for doing so.

People had to go back thru several years of sermons to find that one sound bite of Wright they’re now using to try and clobber Obama with, and Obama has already said, publicly, he doesn’t agree w/ everything Wright says. I can’t but feel if Wright had made other such comments, repeatedly, that the folks who found that one sound bite wouldn’t have told us by now, loudly and repeatedly.

Zirckle, on the other hand, had the bad taste and gall to have his picture taken speaking in front of a rather LARGE picture of Hitler, and then claim, he “doesn’t know enough about the group”??? That is so f-in’ ridiculous…

  75. nellieh says:

Isn’t 30%, the amount he had in a primary bid, about the apogee of the republican core? Bush barely fell below 30% although he should have been in single digits. Make no mistake this is a bigoted, prejudiced country. That’s why Obama will have a difficult time, not only winning the primary but the general election. Pa. was more of a barometer than the pundits are saying. It seems every time bigotry or prejudice is brought up it is sidelined and not discussed. Those Nazi MFer’s in Indiana are not the only ones. Alright you can do that, it might start smelling around here if you didn’t….

it seems everything i would have said about this guy has been said already, and probably more ably. however…

i am very curious about his nickname. Did someone figure it out already? The only hint I’ve seen is:

Thanks for the free press coverage. My “middle” name is a riddle wrapped in an enigma. The middle “v” stands for vs., so it 3 letters versus 3 letters.

So far I’m stumped, but it couldn’t be better than speaking at a Nazi gathering on Hitler’s birthday or lobbying for the return of the guillotine. Anyone have a guess? It’s HVP v. GPD.

HPV v. GDP would have made more sense, particularly with a repugnican, but that’s not it.

There are pockets of like-thinking people all over this country. Zirkle is not only an arch-racist — he appeals to his base in Indiana.
There is a reason why Indiana is a red state, and this is one example.
The area to the north nearer to the Lake is urban and democratic — the rest of the state is red with a large population of red-necks.

  91. stjack says:

A source not connected to the Zirkle campaign, but who has confirmed with Mr. Zirkle the meaning of the letters, has revealed that they stand for “Homeless Vet Fluke Versus The Great Porn Dragon.” No word on how that phrase applies to the campaign or the issues that are of meaningful importance to 2nd District citizens.

    From this fine publication.

I’m posting naked links, ’cause they’re so funny to behold. This is apparently Zirkle’s site and blog, though there’s no content to the blog.

I just checked my calendar again. Today is not April 1st so this can’t be a bad April Fool’s joke and I’m not currently logged into BBSpot (a tech humor site). I’m not sure which is stupider: that the guy goes to speak to a bunch of nazis or that he has the unmitigated gall to say that he doesn’t know enough about the group to know if he agrees with their ideology. Puh-leeze! I know I was born in the morning but not this morning. Zirkle, please do us all a favor and kill yourself now. God, please tell me he doesn’t have any children.

This didn’t seem to have any bearing for the legions of Ron Paul supporters here…
    _______________

    WTF?????? Ron Paul supporters? LEGIONS?

This is a bizarre comment, even by YOUR standards.

Are you counting all your multiple personalities in… ’cause you’ve always struck me as being a closet Ron Paul supporter… or maybe just an athletic supporter… or maybe just a closet case…??????
