“The new U.S. Embassy complex does not have enough fortified living quarters for hundreds of diplomats and other workers, who must remain temporarily in trailers without special rooftop protection against mortars and rockets,” government officials told the AP today. The lack of housing may “further delay moving all personnel” into the embassy, already mired in construction delays, until next year. The issue has become increasingly relevant since Shi’ite militias “resumed steady attacks on the enclave in late March as part of backlash to an Iraqi-led crackdown.”
Why is this NOT a surprise. These clowns can’t do anything right. Except incompetence, missmangement and crimminal wrongdoing. Those they do very well.
April 25th, 2008 at 10:48 pmSpecial rooftop protection?
Rockets and mortars?
But.. but.. I thought the surge was working…
Oh, that’s right: More violence means them terrorists are desperate and dead-enders. Sorry. My bad.
April 25th, 2008 at 10:52 pmThis is not incompetence. They want the embassy destroyed, the contracting company declares bankruptcy and pockets billions….
April 25th, 2008 at 11:18 pmAnd, of course, the diplomats are just so anxious to move in as soon as possible./sarcasm off
No one at the State Department wants to be posted to Iraq. Who in their right mind would?
April 25th, 2008 at 11:27 pmThere is a certain amount of irony here. BushCo rains down terror from the skies indescriminately killing thousands of Iraqis. So the “terrists” now rain down mortars on the Green Zone, the “most safe” place in Iraq.
Question:
April 25th, 2008 at 11:48 pmIf these attacks become a lot more frequent, and devastating as well, how will the conventional media deal with that issue.
More White House wordsmithery at work. It’s not an embassy when you are an occupying force. Call it what it is: an Imperial Palace. Nobody really cares about the shoddy workmanship; it will become a smoking run about 10 minutes after we leave (oh, please, soon!).

Actually places like this get passed on from one occupying power to the next. A little fixing up here, a little reconstruction there, and wala! Ready for the new despot to occupy. Wasn’t this originally one of Saddam’s palaces?
April 26th, 2008 at 12:16 am“places like this get passed on from one occupying power to the next”
I see the makings of a great SNL sketch involving a real-estate agent:
Things are a little messy because the previous occupant left in a hurry. Just patch over the blast holes, a little paint here and there works wonders. The basement features a bowling alley and two torture chambers, no waiting. The torture chambers are really the finest quality, here’s a whole wall full of signed confessions ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H testimonials.
April 26th, 2008 at 12:36 amAnd we’ll leave anytime the Iraqi gummint asks us to.

Gotta admit. That was a great line by the neocons! They knew their puppet gov’t would never ask them to. How safe is that! Brilliant, I say!

Its sort of like the line that says “We’ll stand down when they stand up.” They know full well that the Iraqi army CAN’T stand up! We destroyed all the heavy equipment they would need to fight effectively (all they have is light stuff) and they have no air force to back up their ground troops. (This in addition to disbanding Saddam’s army which could have been the basis for what they are now trying to “create.”) Soooo, BushCo will never have to stand down! Heeeyyy! That means the US will be in a perpetual war… for 100 years! (That sounds like a familiar statement, doesn’t it?)
April 26th, 2008 at 12:56 amsorry to go off topic, but how do you ask a MOD a Q here?

April 26th, 2008 at 2:46 amBut Condi said it was safe, and that these ambassadors were just blowing things out of proportion!

‘Disneyland’ comes to Baghdad with multi-million pound entertainment park (The Times Reports)
All the new rides will have the latest technology Disney has to offer including : special rooftop protection against mortars and rockets. For your Entertainment protection.
April 26th, 2008 at 6:30 amWhat a boondoggle! Glad the taxpayers are getting soaked! Condi’s managerial acumen and leadership should be in the spotlight once again! This is the housing where she planned to house the officers she wanted to fire if they refused directed assignments to Baghdad?
April 26th, 2008 at 6:57 amNot a great headline, it hints at the conditions in, and around the “Green-Zone”? Could State Department employee’s reluctance to serve in Iraq, have merit? After five plus years, not a single objective of this illegal war has been met. The war, started with lies, continues with lies every day, lie after lie, it’s stunning.
April 26th, 2008 at 7:08 amWait until they build the Baghdad Disneyland. You thought Disney Paris had troubles.
April 26th, 2008 at 7:11 amSend ‘em some FEMA trailers.

It would be so sweet if the first thing President Obama would do would be to turn over the monstrosity to the Iraqi people and say “sorry we appropriated your land and built this monstrosity, I hope you can find some use for it”. Unfortunately Obama is of the opinion, as is Clinton, that we need the embassy and people in it to “protect American interests” in Iraq. I don’t know what these interests are. We are an occupying country and we don’t own anything in Iraq that we haven’t taken against their will.
April 26th, 2008 at 11:03 amQuestion:
If these attacks become a lot more frequent, and devastating as well, how will the conventional media deal with that issue.
They will either ignore it or use it as a reason why we can’t leave Iraq.

If they won’t protect the troops with adequate armor who would expect them to protect the diplomats with adequate roofs? What do they need roofs for anyway, “mission accomplished” right?

April 26th, 2008 at 12:02 pmI don’t get it. This dumb ass president calls for budget cuts and dumps all of our money in Iraq? Not to mention the fact that a huge chunk of the money is going into the “new” Baghdad Embassy. This place looks more like a palace. What happened to government frugality? If Bush is into cutting budgets, take the cars and drivers provided to law fakers. Knock out the perks and save a few dimes. Make the congress and the administration cost effective and cost conscious. This, along with ending the Iraq debacle will cut costs. The new embassy is a boondoggle and taxpayers know it. Fix our roads and our corrupt election system, health care for everyone, and prosecute the thieves who have been raiding the treasury during Bush’s term.

April 26th, 2008 at 2:57 pmAnd I thought we were pushing diplomacy! Not like that’s gonna work either =/
April 26th, 2008 at 4:37 pmDid they forget to address mortars and rockets with the “surge?” It just breaks my heart that the diplomats have to live in trailers. Trailers were good enough for the common folk after Katrina so they’re good enough for the diplomatic swine. It’s unthinkable that they’ll make the “special people” live in trailers with formaldehyde. Gotta be different trailers…jus’ gotta be. INCOMING!!!!!!LOL!!!
April 26th, 2008 at 6:09 pmRumsfeld, Franks, Bremer, Rice, Addington, Feith, Perle, Wolfowitz, Bush and the Dick should be sentenced to live there beginning January 2009, while they await their trials for war crimes.
