Hagee Retracts Katrina Comment: ‘I Should Not Have Suggested’ I Knew God’s Intent

mccain_hageeweb.jpgEarlier this week, ThinkProgress reported that controversial Pastor John Hagee had reiterated his long-held contention that Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment to New Orleans for hosting a gay pride parade. Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — who had recently said he was “glad” to have Hagee’s endorsement — distanced himself from Hagee’s comments, calling them “nonsense” nine times.

Now, Hagee has put out a statement saying that he “should not have suggested” that he knew “the mind of God concerning Hurricane Katrina”:

“As a believing Christian, I see the hand of God in everything that happens here on earth, both the blessings and the curses,” Hagee said in a statement issued through his public relations firm. “But ultimately neither I nor any other person can know the mind of God concerning Hurricane Katrina. I should not have suggested otherwise. No matter what the cause of the storm, my heart goes out to all who suffered in this terrible tragedy. There but for the grace of God go any one of us.

If hagee knew god’s intent he would know he’s destined for hell.

  2. Nevar says:

Hagee: “No matter what the cause of the storm…”

Even if it’s climate change, and nothing to do whatsoever with a fantasy sky daddy?

May Odin bless thee and smite thee, Hagee!

  3. fletc3her says:

I too see the hand of God guiding same sex couples into holy matrimony so they can raise their children in loving families. The blessings of a loving relationship is truly God’s gift to humanity. In His wisdom he saw fit not to constrain love to just a man and a woman, but also gave the gift of love to men and to women. If only we could overcome our bigotry and love all God’s creations.

Unfortunately, Hagee is dissembling here. He knows that he is a distraction for John McCain. Rather than forcing McCain to distance himself from Hagee, he is going to lay low for a while. Keep the bigotry on the back burner until after the election. A savvy move, but I don’t feel the hand of God has anything do with it.

  4. Red Pill says:

Whatever. This is noise for media consumption to cover McCain’s ass.

“And you shall know them by their fruits,” and Hagee’s works are rotten to the core.

  5. McWars says:

No worry. We have a residential expert here to communicate that intent.

What’s his name? (Hint: Hall and Oates)

  6. joe cantwell says:

“… and there goes my donations for the week.”

  7. Robt says:

Does Hagee consider lying a sin?

  8. Nevar says:

    Is hagee getting haggard?

  9. Mr. Ed says:

Is this what could be called a non-apology apology?

  10. stjack says:

    Mr. Ed Says:

Is this what could be called a non-apology apology?

clearly. and a political apology. he doesn’t apologize for insulting new orleans and the people who, for example, became homeless because of it. he apologizes for assuming he knew the will of God. he’s not saying it wasn’t the will of God, or that he recognizes the suffering that resulted from it. that’s barely an apology to his own congregation. and he’s certainly not saying that he doesn’t, in his heart, believe it just as much as rev. phelps probably does.

  12. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

What a twit. I’m surprised he didn’t just say that he “misspoke”. That seems to be the mantra for Republicans who get caught with their pants down. What’s he going to do about the Catholics?

I suppose he thinks this will make it all go away. But it won’t.

  13. stjack says:

it’s like mcsame saying he shouldn’t have accepted hagee’s endorsement, but in the next breath saying he’s glad to have it. After having sought it in the first place.

  14. Shayne says:

  15. pete says:

    O.K. I’m better now.

Is Pastor Haggis really trying to claim he has not spent his entire life elaborating on how he personally, and uniquely, “knows the mind of God”? Is he really trying to tell us that every sermon, every book, every hateful comment, he has ever produced is now, suddenly, a “mistake”?

    HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa!

  16. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >“should not have suggested” that he knew “the mind of God”

tell that to closeted fudge packer daryll..

  17. Max-1 says:

    .

And yet, Hagee feels content in KNOWING what God’s intent is and isn’t when classifying what is a sin. That IS why Hagee originally thought God damned NOLA… NO? … Because of their sinful ways and parades?

    .

  18. flex says:

Hagee, the lying hateful bigot, is worshiping the god of Power, Greed and Fear. You can easily tell who has the God of Love in their heart and it ain’t him.

  19. Exit Stage Left says:

Has Hagee set the stage for coming out of the closet?

  20. questioneverything says:

Snakes always lay down. Hagee is one of the richest, greediest pigs in American religious circles. And they are all frauds. I want real questions from real reporters everywhere. Are there any? How about you, Charlie Gibson?

  21. pete says:

On a related note. Bill Moyers interviewed Rev. Jeremiah Wright. It provides an interesting contrast to his earlier report on John Hagee. Links below lead to transcripts and video of both shows.

  22. pluege says:

wow, that john mccain sure is a reformer: he got a scumbag to lie in public to help mccain get elected. that thar is sum pacil full of reformin’.

  23. vat694848 says:

Hagee can see the hand of God in everything that happens on earth? I wonder who guides his hand when he stuffs food in his fat face. Hagee’s endorsement is not worth the paper it’s printed on, this quack will be quacking long after the election. The important fact is, McCain sought-out this “End of times” wacko.

  24. 5th Estate says:

Okay…that’s allright, then! So …moral relativism is still the exclusive province of godless liberals, right? RIGHT?!!

  25. Bluestocking says:

Fine words from Hagee, certainly…but talk is cheap and actions speak far louder than words. Call me a cynic if you must…but at least according to the way in which I was raised, saying that you’re sorry is not some sort of “get out of jail free” card in Monopoly — it’s not an excuse to simply go and do exactly the same thing all over again. That’s not genuine remorse or anything else of the kind — that’s nothing but a CYA policy. Only time will tell whether Hagee’s alleged remorse is genuine or not — and unless or until he demonstrates that it is (such as by avoiding such reprehensible remarks in the future), then I see no particular reason why I should believe him.

  26. Roket says:

Is this a 12 step program or what? Next thing you know he’ll be denying that he supports Israel and that he doesn’t believe he can influence Gods will thereby ushering in the blessed end times or something. Nothing I hate worse than a flip-flopping preacher.

  27. Daddy-O says:

This bag of dog dip suggests that he doesn’t know the mind of God? Now?

Somebody tell his followers. The ones who’ve been sending him millions of dollars for the last several decades. Because he KNOWS what the Baby Jesus is thinking. Because he PRAYS.

Damn all these religious blowhards to hell and back. They’ll get what’s coming to them. Not one of them can actually believe what they say. They’re all hardcore atheists who think they’ll never have to pay for their egregious sins.

It’s the only answer. Oh, I almost forgot…denial. The strongest bond in the human mind.

  28. rastaman says:

bbut bb bbut bbut if he so wrong about this…..what else is Hagee wrong about?

  29. Zooey says:

Shorter Hagee: “I still hate the icky gays.”

  30. christopher wiwi says:

“my heart goes out to all who suffered in this terrible tragedy. There but for the grace of God go any one of us”.

    I`m thinking, not!!!!!!

  31. Cal Malenky says:

Pull that thread and the whole thing unravels.

  32. Chocolate Jesus says:

Shorter Hagee: “I still hate the icky gays.”

dont you mean “I still gay the icky hate?”

I’ve always thought that almost anyone who cares what going on in other peoples bedroom is dealing with serious demons of thier own..

  33. Doc Rock says:

He should have a rubber stamp made up that says, “I should not have suggested that I know the mind of God concerning . . .”!

  34. galmud says:

    Thanks for the links pete

The more I hear and read of Jeremiah Wright the more I respect him. Hes a great example of how you combine faith, education and reason to do good in this world.
Hagee is the exact opposite and its sad and frightening that the American media treats Wright not Hagee as the crazy dangerous fanatic.

  35. Bobwurst says:

    yeah Zooey,

If he’s not just repeating what god said, then he’s saying what he thinks, that new orleans deserved to be destroyed because of the gays. why is this not a bad thing? why does this make it ok for mcain to stand next to the good rev jabba the hut?

  36. artmann11 says:

Get bent you loudmouth blowhard charlatan. It’s scumbags like you that tarnish all Christians.

  37. moondancer says:

The semi-albino McAncient loves his Hagee. The above picture has four hands behind the back with crossed fingers.
Oh and I did talk to God and he told me if he was going to wipe out a sinful city he would: A)do a complete job of eliminating the true sinners. B) target a city with the highest density of hypocritical sinners. Only one city qualifies. Washington DC(Although he wouldn’t rule out Minneapolis during the GOP convention).

  38. backup says:

But ultimately neither I nor any other person can know the mind of God concerning Hurricane Katrina.

Hagee, try this: neither I nor any other person can know the mind of God. period.

You trying to intimate that some can know the mind of God on any issue, is blasphemous.

It’s your attempt to subjugate people that are willing to believe you have some special communications link to God, in order to further your own personal agenda.

I don’t believe in God, but if God exists, this kind of manipulative behavior would surely land you in hell.

  39. Exit Stage Left says:

I wonder who hears god first, hagee or dumbya.

  40. DallasNE says:

Hagee did not retract the views expressed. Only the part attributing them to God. Hagee still apparently believes that Katrina was revenge for scheduling a gay pride parade. Does McCain support Hagee’s current view on gays being punished by Katrina. Is McCain a homophobia like Hagee?

  41. shoeless says:

God Rejects Katrina Comment: ‘Hagee Should Not Have Suggested’ He Knew My Intent

  42. shoeless says:

A storm which fills nearly the entire Gulf of Mexico seems a rather blunt instrument to stop a parade on Decatur St.

The hurricane didn’t even make it’s landfall in New Orleans.

What about all those white Republicans in Mississippi on the Redneck Riviera? You know, where the hurricane hit dead center and wiped everything out?

Does God just have bad aim?

  43. Robt says:

It is not good enought that Hagee confesses he doesn’t know God’s intent.

He needs to admit he doesn’t know GOD !

Only Robertson has the privilege of having conversations with GOD.

  44. osage says:

If Hagee knew the mind of “god”, he wouldn’t be such a hateful homo-phobe. He’s not sorry for being a bigot, but he’s sorry for claiming he knew god’s mind concerning hurricane Katrina striking New Orleans. Since he admits he doesn’t know the mind of god concerning hurricane Katrina, he should also admit he doesn’t know the mind of god concerning god’s creation of gay people. Not to put to fine a point on it, but if Hagee doesn’t know god’s mind about one thing, he can’t know it about anything!

  45. republicanSScareme says:

Hagee is not a Christian. He is a false prophet. His love of the Zionists is an insult to all Christians.

  46. The Capitol Dome says:

If only Rev. Wright could show as much humility as Hagee and admit his mistakes. Alas!
