An audit from Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Stuart Bowen reveals that “of 47,321 reconstruction projects worth billions of dollars found that at least 855 contracts were terminated by U.S. officials before their completion, primarily because of unforeseen factors such as violence and excessive costs.” But “many reconstruction projects were being described as complete” when they were not.

U.S. and Iraqi security forces in Baghdad “have been targeted with 251 improvised bombs this month — nearly double the monthly average — as fighting in and around Sadr City intensified.” U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mike Milano said that “[s]ome of the attacks involved deadly armor-piercing bombs that the U.S. military has linked to Iran.”

In a letter issued Friday to Time Warner Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Bewkes, Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairmen Rep. Joe Baca (D-CA) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) contended that CNN “is skewed in favor of anti-immigration efforts.” Many of CNN’s news programs have adopted “the language Lou Dobbs uses,” Menendez said, referring to Dobbs’ heavy anti-illegal immigration rhetoric.

Across the country, “lawyers who represent suspects in terrorism-related investigations complain that their ability to do their jobs is being hindered by the suspicion that the government is listening in, using the eavesdropping authority it obtained — or granted itself — after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.” The Justice Department “does not deny” that such monitoring has taken place.

With Americans facing record levels of credit card debt, “financial institutions have sharply raised rates for credit card customers — even those who pay on time — as they grapple with losses from other bad consumer loans.” Banks are also imposing higher fees for late payments and ATM withdrawals to boost profits.

“As the Federal Reserve completes work on rules to root out abuses” by mortgage lenders, the mortgage industry “has begun an intensive campaign to fight back.” “[T]he industry’s criticism has already prompted the Fed to consider narrowing the scope of the plan so it applies to fewer loans.”

Afghan President Hamid Karzai “escaped unhurt” yesterday from an assassination attempt by suspected Taliban insurgents at the Afghan national day military parade in central Kabul. “The ability of the attackers to get so close” to Karzai has turned the failed assassination attempt “into a moment of national embarrassment” for the Afghan government.

Oil prices “hit an all-time high near $120 a barrel” today after a refinery strike closed a British pipeline system. At the same time, U.S. retail gas prices “also hit a record for the 13th straight time” with the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded costing $3.603, according to AAA. Gas prices are up four-tenths of a cent from yesterday.

The Air Force will call this week “for the world’s top scientists to come together in a 21st-century Apollo-style programme to develop greener fuels and tackle global warming.” The project aims “to calculate the overall carbon footprint of the world’s energy sources, rather than merely measure their direct emissions.”

And finally: At his final White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday, President Bush poked fun at his potential successors. Explaining why none had attended the dinner, Bush said Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “probably wanted to distance himself from me,” adding that “Hillary Clinton couldn’t get in because of sniper fire and Senator Obama’s at church.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Nancy Pelosi MUST Be Removed from Congress
Help Support Cindy Sheehan Unseat Bush’s Top Enabler

    from Cindy Sheehan (edited):

On May 1st, 2006, Nancy Pelosi made the pronouncement that gave BushCo carte blanche to commit their high crimes and misdemeanors and crimes against humanity by taking Impeachment “off the table”. Moreover, it was in 2002, as reported by the Washington Post, that Ms. Pelosi was briefed on torture and did not object to the inhumane and ineffectual path that our nation was stepping off on.

She has not called for the restoration of habeas corpus, Kyoto or FISA and has not called for the repeal of the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, Protect America Act or the authorization for BushCo to unilaterally attack any country that they unilaterally perceive as a threat to, not Americans, but American interests abroad.

There are probably many “day jobs” that Nancy Pelosi qualifies for, but representing the people of San Francisco is not one of them. She opposes universal, single-payer health care and has promoted and voted for “free” trade agreements that are the major contributing factors to environmental degradation, job loss, or job insufficiency, and to the food riots happening all over the globe today: coming next to a community near you.

    Global Food Crisis Hits U.S.
Restaurants stockpile to guard against soaring costs.

New York and Caracas – The global food crisis reached the United States yesterday as big retailers began to ration sales of rice in response to bulk purchases by customers alarmed by rocketing prices of staples.

Wal-Mart’s cash and carry division, Sam’s Club, announced it would sell a maximum of four bags of rice per person to prevent supplies from running short. Its decision followed caps placed on purchases of rice and flour by some store managers at a rival bulk chain, Costco, in parts of California. The world price of rice has risen 68% since the start of 2008, but in some US shops the price has doubled in weeks.

“What you’re seeing is people who buy in larger quantities, who have a restaurant or a corner store, stocking up because of media reports that prices could go higher,” said Dave Heylen, a spokesman for the California Grocers Association.

    Information from:
    http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/042408N.shtml

** The price of staple foods has been rising due to a “perfect storm” of issues including massive increases in crops grown specifically for bio-fuels, tens of millions of new meat-eaters in countries like China and India, destructive “free-trade” policies, increased crude-oil prices, underperforming Genetically Modified Crops, financial speculation and climate change.

Here is a great and uplifting story about a medical breakthrough!! (Happy News)

The blind man who was given the gift of sight by gene therapy

A pioneering gene therapy trial has helped a blind man to see in a breakthrough that brings hope to millions affected by eye diseases. British scientists have claimed a world first for the revolutionary treatment, which involved a single injection into the retina at the back of the eye.

Steven Howarth, 18, from Bolton, who has a rare inherited eye disorder which has left him with extremely poor vision and completely unable to see in the dark, improved sufficiently after the treatment to be able to navigate a “maze” in conditions similar to street lighting at night.
Experts hailed the research, supported by £1m from the Department of Health, as a major advance in the treatment of blindness and predicted it would lead to new developments in gene therapy for other conditions.

Dawn Primarolo, the Public Health minister, said: “This is a major achievement for British science and the NHS and shows we truly are at the forefront of innovation.”

1 Million New Voters For Last 7 Primaries

RALEIGH, N.C. — They lined up shoulder to shoulder inside the gray high-rise downtown, their politics as diverse as their backgrounds. An ex-felon who needs health insurance, followed by a high school student seeking empowerment, followed by a Marine Corps veteran who wants to prevent his country from crumbling.
Like hundreds of others, their quests led them to the Wake County voter services office this month to register as Democrats for the first time. The line of newcomers that snaked across the checkered tile floor was emblematic of those that have formed across the country this year: black voters, young voters, lifelong Republicans switching parties — all registering in record numbers, and all aligning as Democrats.

They have finally seen the light… For me this story ranks right up there with new gene technology. If we can get the Republicans out of the White House; we could start some ground breaking work with stem cells.

I’m also glad to hear that lifelong Republicans are finally switching parties. It only took them losing their jobs and homes to figure out that the Republicans are not going to be there when they are down and out.

This is so disastrous, a childrens hospital only 35% complete. One in every six dollars is unaccountable to the tune of $10 billion dollars. With that kind of money, we could all have had free Health Care and a real stimulus package to boost our sagging economy. Instead, our government has dumped our money into Iraq reconstruction were we have contractors that stop work before projects are completed, contractors have been killed and projects are completed obliterated by the bombings.

    Poisoning Our Water

PA Administrator Stephen Johnson has proposed further weakening America’s drinking water protections, in ways that would most severely impact the country’s poorest communities. Under direct pressure from the White House and acting against the advice of EPA’s own scientific advisers, the EPA has cut funding for water infrastructure, opposed strong health standards for rocket fuel and other chemicals in our water supply, and decided to derail regulation of the growing levels of pharmaceuticals and chemicals from personal care products in America’s drinking water.

    Katrina Refugees

Nearly three years after Hurricane Katrina, roughly 40,000 families are still living in mobile homes and trailers throughout the Gulf Coast, many erected in their driveways next to destroyed homes. The government issue “temporary” shelters are known to be contaminated with toxic formaldehyde fumes. The urgency for action is escalating with hurricane season less than 2 months away.

    Killing Buffalo

The federal government and Montana state officials have slaughtered nearly one third of Yellowstone’s buffalo herd so far this year, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. NRDC has called for a moratorium on the unnecessary killing and hazing of buffalo that venture out of the western boundary of the park during the annual migration into the herd’s traditional calving grounds on the Horse Butte peninsula. The purported aim of the slaughter is to keep Horse Butte’s private cattle herds safe from potential disease transmission. The problem with this explanation is that there are no cattle in the Horse Butte area and local residents support the wild migration. Furthermore, NRDC reveals that “there are no documented cases of cattle contracting brucellosis from Yellowstone buffalo, and cattle in the vicinity have been vaccinated against the disease.”

    Democrats Registering In Record Numbers
    _____________________________________________

I just spend a good part of my weekend doorbelling for Obama in Raleigh. One of the things our canvassing team was informing our audience was the importance of early voting. The number of Democratic voter registrations has skyrocketed here, and we expect all polling places to be mobbed on May 6 (and, as has happened in other states, there may be a real possibility of there not being enough Democratic ballots).

Here in NC, one can vote early between April 17 and May 3. AND can register to vote at the same time (that can’t be done on May 6). By getting as many Democrats as possible to vote in the early voting, we hope to mitigate possible problems caused by chaos on Election Day.

By the way — all these new Democrats might be just enough to turn this red state blue in November.

I suspect that what will eventually happen is people will get fed up with banks. The fees will dwarf whatever piddling interest one gets. So where will people invest their money? Many will invest in gold or other commodities that basically take their money out of circulation (or they’ll use it to stuff their mattress — same thing).

So…if everyone starts getting dinged $4.50 to $6.00 for each transaction…doesn’t that add up to A LOT of dough???

How can you raise interest by as much as 100%? I guess we can consider this legal loan sharking. It doesn’t matter whether you pay your bills on time; all of us have to pay for the poor decisions made by the lending institutions issuing sub-prime mortgages.

…here’s a bank failure I can live with

    IMF’s Dwindling Fortunes
Thanks to disasters of its own making, the agency is losing money and influence.

Yoday’s IMF is not what it once was. These days, the world’s most famous deficit police force is running a whopping small-country-size $400-million annual deficit of its own and is being forced into some of the same kinds of “structural adjustments” it used to impose on indebted Third World nations. In just the last four years, the IMF’s total loan portfolio has shrunk from $105 billion to less than $10 billion. To cut costs, the agency is reducing staff and closing offices.

The IMF’s loss of influence is probably the most important change in the international financial system in more than half a century. Until just a few years ago, was one of the most powerful financial institutions in the world and the major avenue of influence for the United States in developing countries.

But the IMF lost credibility after presiding over a series of economic disasters. Latin America, for example, suffered its worst long-term growth failure in modern history under the IMF’s tutelage since 1980. The IMF’s “shock therapy” program in Russia vastly underestimated the time it would take to transition from a planned to a capitalist economy in the early ’90s. The result was a lot of shock and no therapy, and tens of millions were pushed into poverty as the economy collapsed.

The Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s was a tipping point. The IMF and the U.S. Treasury helped cause the crisis by pushing for the removal of important regulations on foreign capital flows. Jeffrey Sachs — now head of Columbia University’s Earth Institute — says that “the IMF has become the Typhoid Mary of emerging markets, spreading recessions in country after country.”

North Pole Could Be Ice Free in 2008
    By CATHERINE BRAHIC
    April 27, 2008
You know when climate change is biting hard when instead of a vast expanse of snow the North Pole is a vast expanse of water. This year, for the first time, Arctic scientists are preparing for that possibility.

A polar bear roams on the remote Svalbard archipelago between Norway’s northern tip and the North Pole, Sept. 1, 1998. The thousands of polar bears that prowl the archipelago are one of the main reason visitors venture to the frozen islands, which are as far north as one can go on a regularly scheduled airline. The huge and aggressive animals rarely come into Longyearbyen, the capital of the Svalbards, but local authorities recommend that visitors who head out of town take along high-powered rifles, which can be rented at local stores.
“The set-up for this summer is disturbing,” says Mark Serreze, of the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). A number of factors have this year led to most of the Arctic ice being thin and vulnerable as it enters its summer melting season.

In September 2007, Arctic sea ice reached a record low, opening up the fabled North-West passage that runs from Greenland to Alaska.

The ice expanded again over the winter and in March 2008 covered a greater area than it had in March 2007. Although this was billed as good news in many media sources, the trend since 1978 is on the decline.

Mr. Hartwig said oil companies and food manufacturers are behind the attempt to undercut ethanol. “There is a concerted misinformation campaign being put out there by those people who are threatened by ethanol’s growing prominence in the marketplace,” he said.”

Documents obtained by Mother Jones, which broke this explosive story, reveal the spying lasted from the late 1990s at least through 2000. The company paid private spies to collect phone records and other private information on prominent activists, to root through dumpsters and infiltrate the staffs of environmental organizations.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that Saudi Arabia and other OPEC member nations are poised to collect $1 trillion from oil exports this year, with the largest chunk of the cash flowing from the world’s biggest oil consumer, the United States. The U.S. imported 5.8 million barrels per day of OPEC oil in January, the highest level for any month since July 1977. U.S. oil demand is expected to average 20.6 million barrels a day this year.

The total cuts amount to 1 percent of the meager remaining network’s news staff.

North Pole Could Be Ice Free in 2008
    By CATHERINE BRAHIC
April 27, 2008 You know when climate change is biting hard when instead of a vast expanse of snow the North Pole is a vast expanse of water. This year, for the first time, Arctic scientists are preparing for that possibility.
    ——————————-
I don’t want to say that Climate Change is already unstoppable. But it probably is. Now many scientists are saying we have only a 3 to 5 year window to make the necessary changes in our behavior. We should pray that they’re correct. Nevertheless, this would call for a complete, sudden, life-changing way in which we lead our lives. However, there’s absolutely no indication, we’re going to do what’s necessary to hand our grandchildren a survivable planet.

I wonder if, in all of the universe, there’s another species that destroyed a 4.5 billion year old planet in under 100 years?

I’m still kind of conflicted about Obama going on Fox. He did a good job though and really didn’t leave them anything to use in a smear campaign.

But, the Hillary supporters are knocking Obama supporters because we criticized Hillary and her minions for cozying up to Fox. They say we are hypocrites because now Obama is cozying up to Fox. I disagree with their assessment. There’s a big difference between going on Fox for an interview and praising Fox News as “fair and balanced”. That’s what Hillary and her minions have done. One of her guys (I forget which one) went on Fox the day after the PA primary praising them to high heavens because they were the first to call the race for Hillary. He then went on to say that Fox is the only “fair and balanced” station and they are the only station that is treating Hillary fairly. What a crock. Fox is promoting Hillary not because they love her but because they hate her and want her to be the candidate so that they can energize their base to get out to vote.

Republic of Stupidity – you are aware, I assume, that the Renewable Fuels Association is a trade organization that mostly is comprised of manufacturers that use corn as their feedstock, and is also aligned with the U.S. Dept. of Argriculture. The Ag Dept. is pretty much the representatives of big corporate farming. Yes, there’s greed involved here. And of course, ethanol made from food stocks is not the only cause of higher food costs (and shortages in developing countries), but it is ONE of the factors. In addition, it takes a gallon of oil/gas to produce one gallon of corn-based ethanol. What we should be doing is funding research and development of ethanol using plant waste, such as sugar cane stalks, corn stalks, wood waste, etc. But instead the subsidies and research dollars are weighted toward corn-based product.

    —————————-
In my kicker in post #2 I think I included every conceivable reason why food prices are rising. Here it is again:

** The price of staple foods has been rising due to a “perfect storm” of issues including massive increases in crops grown specifically for bio-fuels, tens of millions of new meat-eaters in countries like China and India, destructive “free-trade” policies, increased crude-oil prices, underperforming Genetically Modified Crops, financial speculation and climate change.

One of the less talked about reasons is FINANCIAL SPECULATION. The traders are artifically running up the price of wheat, corn and soybeans etc. Very similar to the way that crude oil is being run up by speculation trading. I’m reading articles where farmers are now forced to engage in day-trading in the futures market to protect prices. Corn and wheat are being traded wildly like technology was in the late 1990’s. This has never happened before in these markets that used to be very stable and boring.

While you or I are not purchasing 50 lb bags, the restaurants are and that will in turn make eating out more and more expensive which will hurt more businesses. BTW, that would be 94% of American troops in Iraq.

APPROXIMATE TOTAL DEPLOYMENT AS OF 2/08
    • 166,000 troops (incl. ~10,200 non-U.S.)

Again, I ask…how Multinational is that?

    99. You jest, right?

Not because of whether the numbers include Iraqi forced or not but because you want to know if the numbers of the country we invaded are considered a part of the MNF’s?

    Why is this not computing.

Anyone else see irony here? Maybe it’s just me.

You just changed my mind as far as whether you are a troll or not.

    From my email today:

    Friends,
The information below is from a United Methodist minister colleague in Tennessee, the Rev. Steven D. Martin. It is important that United Methodists (and those of you who have United Methodist connections) who have signed our petition objecting to building a Bush partisan think tank at Southern Methodist University know that right-wing elements of our church are trying to destroy the key agency of social justice ministry in the UMC with a malicious and expensive law suit. I ask you to contact leaders in the UMC about this matter, especially during General Conference which is in session now through May 2, 2008.

    +++++++++++++

For some time we have been watching the Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD), a so-called “renewal group” that attacks and undermines the mainline churches. As a United Methodist pastor, I have been particularly concerned about the IRD’s attacks on my denomination. I have addressed these concerns in several ways, one of which is to create the video, Renewal or Ruin?, which is viewable in its entirety online.

After learning about the IRD by accident when I witnessed it attempting to manipulate events at my Annual Conference from behind the scenes, I have been watching it for several years. I have been reading everything I can find about this organization and its divisive tactics. I thought I had seen everything. However, I have just learned that the IRD has made a significant move that puts the future of the United Methodist Church (UMC) and its General Boards and Agencies at risk.

I have long believed that the IRD functions as a strategy center, not as a renewal group. While the language of its writers is often couched in terms of church renewal, it is overwhelmingly critical of denominational leaders and structures. The actions of the IRD in regard to a little-known coalition proves this point.

In 2004 an apparent victory for moderation was won when the General Conference defeated a resolution to cripple the financing and mission of the UMC’s General Board of Church and Society (GBCS), the agency tasked with interpreting the church’s social teachings to the world. However, in recognition of the minority’s concerns regarding the use of endowment funds, which provide significant funding to its ministries, in spite of over forty years of consistent legal opinions permitting their use, the Board elected to seek legal judgment from the courts on this issue. To settle this matter once and for all, the GBCS filed a request for a declaratory decision on the use of the United Methodist Building Endowment Fund with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

Five persons only peripherally related to this issue intervened in this case, turning a fairly simple matter of clarification into an expensive contested lawsuit. The Coalition for United Methodist Accountability (CUMA), an organization comprised of the IRD, Good News, and the Confessing Movement (three powerful and well-funded right-wing organizations claiming to work for the renewal of the UMC), is financing the legal expenses of the five individuals who have intervened against the GBCS’s request for a declaratory decision on the use of the United Methodist Building Endowment Fund.

It turns out that all of the interveners were recruited to join the action against the GBCS by Mark Tooley, director of the IRD’s UM Action project, or the law firm Gammon and Grange, based in Arlington, Virginia.

Why are IRD, Good News, and the Confessing Movement funding the case against GBCS? In a 2004 article published in Good News magazine, Tooley said, “If income from the Methodist Building and old Board of Temperance investments were restricted to alcohol-related work, it would be a devastating blow to Church and Society’s ability to lobby for its more favored liberal political causes.” Furthermore, Tooley gloats: “Even more devastating would be any legal finding that required Church and Society to reimburse the millions of dollars it has spent over the years from old Board of Temperance assets, in seeming violation of the 1965 trust agreement’s expectation that all income was to be reserved for alcohol-related work.”

Forty years of legal opinions have clearly allowed the Board the latitude to use these funds as it has. But how and why did the IRD get involved in this legal case?

The five interveners against the GBCS are C. Pat Curtin, Carolyn Elias, Leslie O. Fowler, John Patton Meadows, and John Stumbo. All are United Methodists and each has been a delegate to the General Conference at one time or another. The interveners testified that they do not all know one another and, when deposed, at least one of them stated he did not know the identities of the other interveners. None of them initiated his or her participation in the lawsuit against GBCS.

Only one of the interveners, Mr. Stumbo, indicated that he and his wife, Helen Rhea Stumbo, an IRD board member, anticipated being asked to contribute to the legal fees related to the intervention against the GBCS.

Ms. Elias said she thought it was Mark Tooley who asked her to be an intervener and that she had no idea who was paying her legal expenses. Mr. Fowler said he was asked to be an intervener by the law firm, Gammon and Grange, and that he had no idea who was paying for his legal expenses. Mr. Curtin said he had heard the IRD was paying his legal expenses. In a sworn deposition made public by the court, John Patton Meadows, an intervener and a Deputy U.S. Attorney, admitted he was not paying his own legal fees nor was he sure who was paying them, but he thought it was CUMA who was doing so. Meadows also acknowledged that he had sent an email to the General Secretary of the GBCS from his work computer in the North Alabama U.S. Attorney’s office, saying that he wanted to see him “muzzled” for questioning President George W. Bush’s decision to invade Iraq.

Meadows also admitted in his deposition that he had received confidential legal documents belonging to the GBCS prior to or during the 2004 General Conference, but that he did not allow that to inhibit him from reading them.

None of the interveners did any research into the background and history of the case beyond reviewing documents provided to them by Tooley, the law firm, and other individuals. Each of the interveners admitted he or she was unaware of any restrictions placed on any gifts given to the GBCS.

The IRD is involved in this case because it has long proclaimed that it would like to bring down the GBCS (as well as the Womens’ Division of the General Board of Global Ministries). Tooley’s own words in Good News magazine in 2004 assert this.

Now is the time for action. Please circulate this posting as far as you can — especially among United Methodist General Conference delegates with whom you have contact.
