Judge rules against Bush Administration in polar bear protection case.
In a major victory against Bush’s failure to admit the threat of climate change, a “federal judge has found the Bush administration guilty of violating the Endangered Species Act and ordered the administration to issue a final listing decision for the polar bear by May 15, 2008.” The district court ruling against Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne found:
Defendants have been in violation of the law requiring them to publish the listing determination for nearly 120 days. Other than the general complexity of finalizing the rule, Defendants offer no specific facts that would justify the existing delay, much less further delay. To allow Defendants more time would violate the mandated listing deadlines under the ESA and congressional intent that time is of the essence in listing threatened species.
The administration has been fighting to avoid protecting the polar bear since 2005.

I realize this was a snark post (at least, I HOPE you aren’t serious), but there are many who can’t see that protecting the polar bear is that big a deal.
There’s a bit more to the story than that. The polar bear happens to be the top of the food chain for the entire arctic ecosystem — they feed on ringed seals, which feed on polar cod and other fish, which feed on plankton and krill, which feed on bacteria and provide balance to the oxygen and carbon dioxide in our oceans. Killing off one link in that chain can throw the whole chain out of whack with other species either dying off or becoming too abundant. And yes, what happens to a large ecosystem on one part of our planet can affect the rest of the planet through a domino effect.
However, this is pretty much lost on Bushco. And even if Bush and his merry men did understand the consequences of upsetting ecological balance, he probably wouldn’t be concerned, because after all, The Rapture is right around the corner (snark).
