Perino Rewrites Banner: ‘Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission’

bushbanner.jpg

Exactly five years ago tomorrow, President Bush landed aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, stood under a banner proclaiming “Mission Accomplished,” and declared, “major combat operations in Iraq have ended.” Since that day, more than 3,900 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, representing more than 97 percent of total troop deaths there.

Today, reporter Helen Thomas asked White House Press Secretary Dana Perino how the president would “commemorate” the date tomorrow. Perino said the White House had “certainly paid a price for not being more specific on that banner”:

PERINO: President Bush is well aware that the banner should have been much more specific, and said, Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission. And we have certainly paid a price for not being more specific on that banner. And I recognize that the media is going to play this up again tomorrow, as they do every single year.

Watch it:

This is only the latest tack the White House has taken to defend Bush’s 2003 remarks. Last year, Perino insisted that “we did prevail,” while former press secretary Tony Snow laughably claimed that Bush “said just the opposite” of “mission accomplished.”

In fact, regardless of Perino’s attempts to amend the banner, it’s clear what Bush meant. Just a month after his speech on the U.S.S. Lincoln, he also spoke to troops in Qatar: “America sent you on a mission to remove a grave threat and to liberate an oppressed people, and that mission has been accomplished.”

Thank goodness there are sleeping aides for these lying administration mouthpieces. How does one lie day after day and hold their head up ?

  2. misshusseinmolly says:

Still you gotta give Blondie a couple of points for creativity. Even if her attempts to spin that blunder are still pathetic and insulting.

  3. Winski says:

And the earth is still flat according to her.

It’s amazing how stupid she is….

  4. texaslady says:

I just figured it out ! The banner was too short for the whole slogan, it wasn’t bush’s fault.

  5. BillinChicago says:

Yes, if only Bush could wave a magic wand . . .

  6. L. Hussein Annie says:

Ah, yes. The lovely Neocon Barbie speaks.

  7. Above the Clouds says:

What exactly was the “mission” we accomplished?

  8. raynman says:

And the room didn’t explode in laughter????

  9. barfly says:

    The lovely Neocon Barbie speaks.

The subtitle of this thread should be “Neo-Barbie Shanks Another One Into the Weeds.”

  10. texaslady says:

Well, bush got to put on a uniform as such and pretend to fly a great distance to land on a ship. A ship that was positioned so no one can see how close to land they were. Kind of the standard of his administration, cheat, lying etc.

  11. LividLib says:

that’s pathetic. even by bimbo Dana’s standards.
a new low for the propraganda ministry.

  12. ralph the wonder llama says:

Are you people still trying to hold BushCo accountable to objective reality?

    -snort-

  13. BrianFL says:

Did this airhead not realize Bush also spoke from the carrier and declared all major combat operations over in Iraq?

My God, the attempts to rewrite history on Iraq never ends. The corporate shill media just plays along. They are too busy reporting about Obama’s pastor for the millionth time, or writing about photographs of Miley Cyrus. They’ll probably portray Helen Thomas as some kind of lunatic for even bringing up “Mission Accomplished”.

  14. Doc Rock says:

You’d think crew of liars would have all their pants burned off by now.

  15. texaslady says:

Martha Raddatz and Helen Thomas at least some journalists with a backbone…now where are the men asking hard questions? Or even pining down the lies of bush every news conference?

  16. robbez_92107 says:

    Herr Goebels, is that you?
Tariq Aziz, who goes on trial this week?

Ohh, Dana, we know you never learn (see Bay of Pigs or Cuban Missile Crisis).

  17. JMOHR says:

The corporate shill media has been bought and paid for by the Republican elite. Media concentration leads to a media leadership that has deep political/economic ties with the right wing of this country. Bush is nothing more than an incompetent and impotent little shit with delusions of grandeur. Think of anyother time when the American press would have tolerated the constant stream of law breaking, incompetence, scandal and cronyism that the Republicans have recently delivered to us.

  18. texaslady says:

Wait a minute remember when Helen Thomas asked some hard questions and was moved to the back of the room for a year? That is what everyone is afraid of but you can’t move everyone to the back, so journalists get some gonads

  19. shoeless says:

They should have just added a disclaimer in fine print at the bottom of the sign.

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED*

*Participants must be present to claim this honor.

  20. TXProgressive says:

Good lord – I thought Tony Snowjob was shameless, but Perino has him beat by a mile! Psst, Dana, everybodys laughing at you, not with you.

  21. LividLib says:

PERINO: President Bush is well aware that the banner should have been much more specific, and said, Mission Kinda Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are Like On This Huge Ship On Their Mission Somewhere to Like Blow Stuff Up and Things.

  22. shoeless says:

    Above the Clouds Says:

What exactly was the “mission” we accomplished?

We stopped Iraq from selling their oil for Euros.

  23. RUCerious says:

If destroying this nation was the mission, it certainly has been accomplished.
    Way to go, BushitCo.

  24. Peter C says:

    Poor, poor Bushie-boy!

He stages a huge publiciity show using public funds, an aircraft carrier as a prop, and surely costing a fortune, to trumpet his martial prowess, …

    and everyone remembers it …

    as a lie …

and characteristic of his entire failure of a presidency …

    and life.

Will we ever live down the shame of the past 7.5 years?

  25. texaslady says:

Remember Rumsfeldt saying you go to war with the army you have not the army you want, well this group is left with the only one who can lie with a straight face. Nobody else wants the job !

  26. galmud says:

“Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission”

ROFL much more specific? How stupid does she think people are?

Everyone with a half a brain realizes it was a propaganda-event to celebrate “mission accomplished” in Iraq and showcase Bush as a war-hero to the world.

And besides, if the words “Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission” could be fitted on a banner, it would have made the most ridiculous banner in history.

  27. rmwarnick says:

The history goes like this: the words “mission accomplished” were in the early drafts of President Bush’s speech. Rumsfeld axed the phrase because he believed it was premature to make that claim. But it was too late to change the banner, which had already been crafted by the White House PR team.

  28. robbez_92107 says:

This reminds me of Justice Scalia on 60 Minutes claiming that torture is not cruel and unusual punishment because it’s not punishment.

Other than Rush and Billdo, does anybody really believe this crapola?

  29. texaslady says:

Even bush has said he wished he hadn’t said those words and here we go another year and trying to whitewash yet another one of his blunders. They need to just shut up.

  30. celtic cynic says:

Actually, texaslady in post #4, it was the fault of the democratic congress for not appropriating enough funds for the complete banner.

  31. Zimzone says:

Few people know that Dana now wears Bush’s codpiece…if they

could only see behind the pulpit.

  32. moondancer says:

She is such a shitty liar. I heard her body temperature is a constant 20C. I wonder how the Stepford Wife Foundation does that?

  33. wldj says:

Perino thinks she is smarter than everyone else in America. She routinely insults Helen Thomas or talks to her like she is an ignorant child, it’s disguisting. She probably sleeps just fine because she believes her own bullshit and has no real conscience. She is just another typical neocon who thinks she is better and smarter than everyone else even though she is ignorant and arrogant and a paid liar.

  34. hussein toasterhead says:

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

AAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHAHA!

    HAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHA! AHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

It’s funny cause 4,000 Americans and 1.2 million Iraqis died.

  35. grover nerdkissed says:

And we have certainly paid a price for not being more specific on that banner.

uh, *WHAT* price have they paid????

  36. texaslady says:

What is really spooky is these idiots really thought mission was accomplished. If only they knew what the world knew that they had opened a can of worms and America now owns it. But that would have mean’t listening to more intelligent voices. LIKE EXPERIENCED PEOPLE.

  37. Exit Stage Left says:

    Those poor misunderstood neo-morons.

  38. texaslady says:

toasterhead – 4058 and counting but soldiers are only a number, per T.Snow.

  39. Exit Stage Left says:

Hound her Helen. Keep making her try to justify 5 years of bombing apartment buildings in a mad quest to kill suspected terrorists.

  42. McWars says:

Oh, now you guys have done it. The cat’s out of the bag, I admit defeat.

  43. texaslady says:

I wonder if any Republicans are ashamed of what their party has become. Certainly not all are selfish, self centered, greedy people. Some must have family being sent on 3rd and 4th tours. Some must have family in hospitals, trying to regain their health. Some must realize what the last years have done to the country we all share.

  44. Exit Stage Left says:

“Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission”

Just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?

  45. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

I can’t stand the way Perino treats Helen Thomas. Helen can wipe the floor with Perino intellectually any day of the week.

Didn’t her mother teach her to have respect for her elders?

Better question should be: Didn’t her mother teach her that lieing was wrong?

  46. fletc3her says:

At one point weren’t they claiming they hadn’t made the banner at all?

  47. texaslady says:

Perino understands that lying in this position parlays her to a wonderful lobbyist position paying a great deal more. So, depends on what you consider achievement, I guess.

  48. Exit Stage Left says:

    Banner? What banner?

  49. McWars says:

He announced at the time, “Major combat operations in Iraq have ended.” I don’t recall hearing anything in the speech singling out the ship.

    Resident trolls, your defense?

  50. Wayne says:

    Come on!

Perino doesn’t actually believe we will buy that load of crap she just dumped, does she?
Either she is stupid as hell or she thinks the American public is.

  51. McWars says:

Why does George Bush ape America?

  52. AlphaLiberal says:

For a liar, she’s a quite attractive one. The lying over killing innocent people does detract from her beauty, though.

Anything on the bombing of civilians in Sadr City?

    Hail to the chimp.

  53. VerbalKint says:

And the room didn’t explode in laughter????

Amazing, isn’t it? Do they think that anyone really believes what they say anymore? I doubt it. These are pro forma lies, not meant to be believed, just intended to go through the motions of answering the question in the most nominal sense possible. It really just amounts to the administration and its mouthpieces saying “we can do whatever we want, and you can’t do anything about it.”

  54. Gregor Samsa says:

“Pres Bush never said ‘Mission Accomplished’. He never said that. He. Never. Said. That. You’re welcome.”
    ~Exley

  55. galmud says:

    AlphaLiberal Says:

Anything on the bombing of civilians in Sadr City?

Like the 16 civilians killed in US airstrikes yesterday? Dont be silly. WH would never admit of killing civilians. US forces only kill insurgents/criminals/terrorists/militias/extremists/gunmen

US military says they dont attack if they see civilians. But Iraqi civilians are a lot like American civilians. The live and work in houses making them kinda difficult to see but very easy to kill if you bomb their houses

  56. dasm says:

These people show us every day that they have no shame, and will never accept responsibility for their own words or actions. They are reprehensible.

  57. sacopenapa says:

HELLEN THOMAS ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS A TRUE JORNALIST AND REPORTER! ONE OF THE FEW WHO STILL HAVE DECENCY! Perino bimbo should be ’slaped’USA interrogation style, everytime she tell us a LIE! It is now legal insn’t it?!

  58. RUCerious says:

America sent you on a mission to remove a grave threat

The only grave threat appears to be that there are some empty graves left.

    quick, BushitCo, fill em up!

  59. RUCerious says:

Wayne @#52, remember they ‘create their own reality’…

  60. flavorino says:

Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission

And what would that mission be, since the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln was about 2 miles off of San Diego?

    Oh, right, that would be:
“The Mission to Use Propaganda to Deceive the American People so the Military-Industrial Complex Could Loot the U.S. Treasury and Leave It Stuffed Full of IOU’s”

  61. wisedup says:

Doctor!..this is Dana, these damn sleeping pill are not working!!!

  62. sacopenapa says:

The Mission acomplished banner fiasco was designed by Karl Rove. It was his thinking behind that propaganda. Bush then declared end of major combat in Iraq. Perino Bimbo is wrong when she claims it was designed to comemorate something else. It was Karl Rove’s propaganda style thing, creating a photo opportunity for Bush. But like everything this criminals do, they only saw the moment. Not the whole picture. And with their arrogance, they also thought the FIASCO this war has turned to would never exist. ‘Greeted as liberators’, yeah… since when occupiers are seeing as liberators. Stop telling us lies Perino, go and Chenney yourself with a ‘mission acomplished’ banner behind it!

  63. Mugsy says:

I remember back on August 5, 2004 when Bush redefined the “War on Terror” as:

the struggle against ideological extremists who do not believe in free societies, who happen to use terror as a weapon to try and shape the conscience of the free world.

Just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?

The deeper in trouble the get, the longer and more convoluted their defense becomes.

  64. dajson says:

I admit the conspiracy theories make more sense in my head, but this is how I see it. The “Mission Accomplished” sign is exactly what the Bush Administration wanted to say with the usual nudge nudge wink wink they like to send along with code words to the elite have’s and have mores that Bush considers his real base. He was really saying, “the war is privatized for all the war profiteering companies in the private right-wing club, the Iraqi oil spigot is now shut down so Exxon can reap historical multi-billion dollar profits, and the Bill of Rights is now replaced with Administration sanctioned and authorized torture policies, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.”

  65. batteries says:
