On Friday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) raised eyebrows when he implied that the U.S. invaded Iraq for oil by saying at a townhall meeting that his plan for energy independence would “prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East.” Later in the day, McCain stumbled while trying to clarify his comment by claiming he was talking about the first Gulf War.
Ironically, one of McCain’s biggest supporters, fellow Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl (R) implicitly criticizes McCain today in a column attacking lawmakers who want Iraq to pay for more of its reconstruction with oil revenues, writing that “we must never make it appear as if we went into Iraq for its oil“:
It’s one thing to ensure that the Iraqis continue to shoulder more of the burden; it’s quite another to punish our troops if Iraq falters in its efforts. And we must never make it appear as if we went into Iraq for its oil.
At a press conference in Arizona today, McCain tried to recalibrate his oil remarks again, this time saying he will make sure that “dependence” on oil “will never be the source or any reason for us to be in a conflict in the Middle East.” Watch it:
As ThinkProgress noted on Friday, McCain’s comments echo the words of former Fed Chief Alan Greenspan, who wrote in his memoir that he is “saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil.”
Jon Kyl: ‘We Must Never Make It Appear As If We Went Into Iraq For Its Oil’
Kyl is obviously parsing words and covering his fat behind by throwing in appear.
May 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm“We must never make it appear that we are criminal engaged in a conspiracy to profit from the oil we went to war for”. It would look, well, “bad”
May 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pmGood thinking, Kyl! Heaven forbid we ever tell anyone the truth. This is politics, dammit!
May 5th, 2008 at 3:06 pmAnd we must never make it appear as if we went into Iraq for its oil.
As if anyone believes the horseshit GOP anymore when it comes to “appearances” , Kyl , outside of the most ignorant and stupid 20-something % currently occupying the planet ?
May 5th, 2008 at 3:07 pmToo late, John. The cat’s out of the bag.
May 5th, 2008 at 3:09 pmJon Kyl: ‘We Must Never Make It Appear As If We Went Into Iraq For Its Oil’
Well to do that, Jon, you need to find them damn WMDs that they said we went to war for then. Good luck.
May 5th, 2008 at 3:09 pmAnd we must never make it appear as if we went into Iraq for its oil.
May 5th, 2008 at 3:09 pmHey! was that mike on!??

May 5th, 2008 at 3:16 pmIt’s amazing that one of McCain’s biggest gaffs is that he inadvertently told the TRUTH about the reasons for going into Iraq. I can’t wait to see him during the presidential debates! We’ll have to keep watch for that “box” hiding under his jacket.
GOP – keeping up apprearances!

May 5th, 2008 at 3:30 pmGive McSenile a break. It must be difficult for a man his age to be able to remember all of the lies that make up the Republican platform. Shucks, he probably can’t even remember what he had for breakfast. Hey, what’s that red button for??
May 5th, 2008 at 3:31 pmHow many Republicans does it take to help McCain stuff that toothpaste back into the tube?
May 5th, 2008 at 3:32 pmIt’s a pure coincidence that Iraq has the #2 oil reserves in the world and sits in between #1 (Saudi Arabia) and #3 (Iran is next). It was all about the WMD they didn’t have and the leader they used to have. That’s why we must stay there 100 years. Yeah, that’s it.

May 5th, 2008 at 3:38 pmRecord oil corporation profits and the cost of crude oil’s doubling in a year .
Cheney’s secret energy agreements ,
Rolling blackouts in California ,selling electricity back to your self and profitting handsomely.
Kenny Boy and Enron ,
The complete failure to locate WMD’s in Iraq or to prove any link at all between Saddam Hussein and 911 ,while unleashing a humanitarian crisis resulting in the deaths of more than a million people , Iraqi’s included .
The refugeeing of millions more all of whom have relatives and friends who suffer in sympathy in that same country.
The SS condi rice or her occupying a seat on the board of a major oil giant .
Or … and I like this one the best …. the fact that as members of the PNAC they subscribed to the doctrine in writing that they planned on invading the Mid East for control of the resource in order to control China and the developing world , which is a war crime according to our international agreements .
“but baring a national catastrophy it will be hard to galvanize the American public behind such a scheme.” PNAC
“we must never make it appear as if we went into Iraq for its oil“: Yep, most of us honed right in on this Repubithug tripe.
We don’t need our Congress critters interpreting for us. The president has enumerated the “reasons” for this Iraq disaster. We are able to judge for ourselves the veracities and the myths generated with his hype.
May 5th, 2008 at 3:40 pmAnyone keeping track of how much time off McCain is taking on the campaign? Seems like he doesn’t work weekends! The guy is old! Way too old! Give it up, old man!
May 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pmBut wait!
30 years ago, Barack Obama was seen in the same baseball stadium as a convicted jaywalker. Does this mean that Obama supports jaywalking because he didn’t denounce this man at the White Sox game?
We’ll spend the next four hours discussing this matter instead of McCain saying we went to war over oil.

May 5th, 2008 at 3:54 pmAnd we must never make it APPEAR as if we went into Iraq for its oil.
So we don’t make it “APPEAR” that is was for oil, so let’s shift the goal posts once again and say we invaded Iraq so that they could have a Disney Style Theme Park. That would be sooooo much more truthful.
May 5th, 2008 at 3:57 pmSo, even though we obviously did go into Iraq because of oil, let’s keep pretending we didn’t. Because the rest of the world is so stupid, they’ll believe anything we say rather than their own lying eyes…

May 5th, 2008 at 4:48 pmVery good googling there. Seed dispersal is correct. Yet another amazing twist of evolution. Still not all species detach from their roots to achieve this goal. Do you think this seed scattering is why progressive thought is so much more likely to be spread rather than the stagnant/sessile thought of the right?
May 5th, 2008 at 5:03 pmThe only people McCain’s handlers are going to be able to convince are the 30% that continue to support the war and believe all the lies they were told. Most of us knew this to be the truth from the very beginning. It’s the only reason that ever made any sense, but obviously the American people would not support allowing their sons and daughters to die in order to protect oil. And there’s also a good chance that a portion of the remaining 30% might actually wake up to the nightmare they’ve supported so wholeheartedly since 2003.
May 5th, 2008 at 5:05 pmWhenever I tell conservatives we invaded Iraq to control the oil, they say “good, we need more oil”. They don’t understand that it was for the benefit of the large energy corps, not the consumers. They don’t understand that is why their gas went from 95 cents (under Clinton) to $4.00.

May 5th, 2008 at 6:36 pmIf there are still people out there that don’t realize we went over for the oil, there is very little hope for the human race!
May 5th, 2008 at 6:50 pmMajority of FOX viewers probably think Iraq was responsible for 9/11.
May 5th, 2008 at 7:08 pmThere is nothing wrong with stabilizing an area that supplies a vital natural resource to the world as long as that area actually is in turmoil. Gulf I was an excellent example. A clear invasion by Iraq with a declared intent to grab oil. A universal agreement to take action without any material benefit to firms from the United States.
The problem that we have here is that there was no immediate danger to oil supplies, no immediate threat of aggressive action (at least by Iraq) and no consensus. The rebuilding was to be financed through oil revenue (Yeah) which could be understandable if the contracts had not been let to only certain nations of the “Coalition of the Willing” who seemed to do nothing but waste the money through fraud. Now we compound the problem by ensuring that US backed oil firms will receive contracts with extremely favorable terms.
It is not that oil considerations could be involved, it is that impure motives were involved.
May 5th, 2008 at 7:12 pmThere was an immediate danger of their oil going to India, China, and Russia. There was an immediate danger of it being traded in euros instead of dollars. There was an immediate danger of the West’s Big Five Oil Corps not being in on the last half of the planet’s oil.
May 5th, 2008 at 7:20 pmI understand Progressives opposing war for oil interests. I understand progressives push for lower CO2 emissions. I also understand opposing new oil exploration that could have negative environmental impact.
But, recently, I’ve heard progressives complain about the high price of gas, as if it were a Bush failure. I heard it in an Obama speech last night.
As gas approaches $4/gal here, it’s approaching $8/gal in Europe. Wouldn’t that suggest that our past policies have been relatively positive (in terms of gas price) when compared with European policy?
I believe we use approximately 3 times the gas that Europeans use. I suggest, it’s because it’s much cheaper in the U.S. than in Europe.
If we complain about the high price of gas, and we could lower the price somehow, won’t that lead to increased consumptions? And increase emissions?
I understand most of the progressives stands in relation to oil. But, I don’t understand when progressives complain about high gas prices.
Progressives should welcome high gas prices to help promote conservation. I suggest that progressives should even promote higher taxation for gas, to fund more infastructure and further increase the price.
Higher gas prices (like they have in Europe) will promote conservation, more interest alternative with higher fuel economy and energy alternatives and overall less demand for oil. Less demand for oil reduces our dependency on the middle east and is better for our environment.
May 5th, 2008 at 8:11 pmis it just me or does it appear that the media and the dems are giving mccain another pass on a huge gaffe – why aren’t they climbing all over him on this one? – they should have dug their claws in on the iran-aq statement but let that slide pretty smartly – i turn on the tv today and it seems that this is not as important as preachers and flag pins

May 5th, 2008 at 8:47 pmDid we really invade a country to loot their oil? Why I was told we went to remove WMD’s and bring democracy and liberate the Iraqi people. Now we find out it’s all about the oil. Is that a fact? No wonder they called it Operation Iraqi Liberation, oh, wait, that didn’t poll well with the focus group. It was too obvious.
