House votes to subpoena Addington.»

This morning, the House Judiciary Committee voted to subpoena David Addington, Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff, to compel him to testify about the administration’s interrogation programs. He has said he will agree to testify if subpoenaed. The AP also reports that John Yoo, author of legal memos that sanctioned torture, has reversed course and agreed last night to testify before the committee as well, along with Douglas Feith and former Attorney General John Ashcroft. Former CIA Director George Tenet “is still in negotiations with the committee, according to House Judiciary Committee spokeswoman Melanie Roussell.”

Well, hey, let’s just all stand up and give them a standing ovation for doing their jobs. ‘Bout time.

  2. liberal traitor Says:

    po,
They haven’t done anything yet. Once I see that smug b-tard Addington in the hot seat, and I hear some actually relevant and hard lines of questioning, then maybe I start thinking about standing. But it will only be to get a better view. Saving my applause, just in case.

  3. RUCerious Says:

Let me guess, no transcript, not under oath…Betcha.

  4. A Patriot Acting Says:

I sincerely hope that these traitors show up and attempt to defend their ideology rather than invoking Executive Privilege on half of the questions and taking the 5th on the other half. It would actually be refreshing to hear someone from this Administration take a stand and state, “Damn right we did it and we’re proud of it!”
Something tells me that it’ll just be more of the same though. If you read through everyone’s transcripts who have been in this Administration that has appeared on the Hill for questioning, practically each one’s lying, “I don’t recall”s and Executive Privilege invoking makes it obvious that NOT ONE OF THEM is actually PROUD of what they have done. Is there not one neocon, sycophantic Rightie out there who will stand up to declare, “I did it, I said that and I am proud of it!”?

    …crickets…I thought so

  5. Zooey Says:

And when he refuses to comply…?

  6. Zimzone Says:

‘To Catch a Feith’ may make a good movie, but I’ll hold my applause as liberal traitor states above.
Addington, Feith, Yoo, Aschcroft & Tenet, eh? At first glance, it would appear two relevant names are missing…Cheney / Bush.

The House of Commons in the UK has a unique way of allowing members to verbally harass those speaking. It would be a hoot to see these traitors be called what they truly are in public, eh?

Still, it might represent a chink in Bush’s armor. Bush’s regime was always built on a house of cards, protected by smoke and mirrors. Like you, I’m certainly not ready to declare victory yet but I will take hope where I can find it.

  8. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

My fantasy is that Congress has already gotten some secret testimony about the conspirators who violated the Constitution and treaties against torture. I dream of questions that lead to a couploe of BushCo conspirators committing perjury in their testimony to Congress. I long for that lone conspirator, seeking to minimize his own consequences, singing the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Yes, Virginia, there is an American’s Dream.

  9. Uncle Ho Says:

Zooey; when the targets of the subpoenas refuse to comply, John Conyers will write 8-10 letters to them expressing his disappointment.

    SNARK!!!

There are still hundreds in Guantanamo none of whom has ever seen a trial but whats new , the USA is responsible for MANY 100’s of 1000’s being tortured all over South America by dictatorships we helped install there , death squad diplomacy and the toppling of any democracy which put the interests of the vast majority of their people ahead of the interests of ” American “corporations”…..Recuerdo .
A CIA sponsored coup in Venezuela and the vast amounts of money spent in effecting the Palestinians “free” elections are sad proof that very little has changed since United Fruit in Guatemala in the middle of the last century.

I can already give you a transcript of the testimony:

“I don’t remember. I don’t recall. I have no memory of anything at all.”

  15. ConcernedParent Says:

They are working on their stories right now, its all Powell’s fault

  16. celtic cynic Says:

You beat me to it, ToonGuy, but you left out the Fifth Amendment gibberish along with executive privilege bafflegab.

  17. Buckie Boy Says:

And does anyone really think that someone connected with the Bush Crime Family is going to tell anything but lies?

They will do some of that republican ‘Word Smithing’ that they are so fond of.

Sorta like ‘It’s OK if a republican does it’ thinking.

  18. po Says:

iberal traitor, trust me, i’m not applauding or even thinking anything will come of this. if they all actually testify (doubt it), it’ll be theater (probably not even good theater what 7 years into the play), but not much else.

  19. L. Hussein Annie Says:

    Can you say …executive privilege??

I’m not going to hold my breath.

  20. freeman Says:

Crimes don’t go away , even if the guilty enjoy a drink in their country club together . The history is there for all to see and will be remembered .

  22. tokin librul Says:

somebody tell me please what there is to ‘negotiate.’

subpoenae work like this: you get a legally binding order requiring you to be somewhere, at some time, to tell what you know about some matter. there’s no ‘negotiation’ involved. You get a subpoena, you show up. if you don’t, they issue a warrant for your satchel-ass, and haul you in as a perp when they catch you. none of these guys should be that hard to find. Negotiate this, Tenant!!!

  23. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    A subpoena, huh? Not bad.

Too bad they couldn’t do anything that had consequences for not complying, though.

Still, it makes a good show.

  25. The Shadow Says:

This is nothing more than a sham. The Democrats are so weak they wouldn’t dare try to enforce the subpoena against Addington. They are doing this for show and that all. I’m the most partisan Democrat on the planet, but I see this for what it is. They Democratic party is made up of whimps mostly who care about the same things we complain about, but never do anything about. There hasn’t been a tough Democrat in Congress since Dan Rostenkoski, D-Ill, who got sent to jail for bribery.

The other tough Democrat was Tipp O’Neal, my campaign and hero who is sorely missed and under appreciated in the history of our party. The average Democratic member of congress today is afraid of his/her own shadow and bought and paid for by special interest lobbists. That is exactly why we don’t get anything of substance don’t with our party in the majority. The Republicans threaten to use the so called “nuclear” option on several occasions to break a 60-40 log jam. That’s because 60 votes are needed to do anything in the Senate. The Democrats have failed to use this threat to stop the war and they haven’t completely shut the Republicans out on most of not all votes. In other words they are afraid to run over the Republicans the same way they ran over them with they (Republicans) had power.

What is required is some persuation from voters to do what is right instead of taking lobbist money and voting against our interest. This is what voters don’t understand when they vote for Hillary Clinton over Sen. Obama. She is an insidered who takes money from lobbist to change her vote or vote a certain way. If she got elected we’d have gridlock and nothing would get done. Why? When you are bought and paid for by lobbist, they aren’t going to allow her to change things or get off the gravy train. How do you think they made 20 millions dollars last year and 109 million since Bill left office? It’s because the lobbist they know got them sweetheart deals on everything they did. Think about it, how many people do you know who made 20 million dollars last year without working for it?

  27. Zed Lefflin Says:

He might show up but he will have undergone a full frontal lobotomy by Darth Cheney with his hunting knife and won’t remember anything about anything just like Gonzo.

  28. tokin librul Says:

I agree. Addington and all the rest may agree to show up but i doubt they’ll actually testify. A bunch of 5th amendment pleadings, a couple of arrogant snubs, and they’ll walk.

Give them a 10 minutes of ‘waterboarding’ (drowning torture) before letting then in! Bring them in orange suits and black hoods and shackled! Slap them as many time they “legally” approved!

  31. StupidGit Says:

If I am ever given a subpoena I wonder if the authorities will let me negotiate the rules of questioning before I agree to appear in court. Doubtful. But then, I’m a lowly peasant in our great American caste system.

  32. freeman Says:

You may take 3 baby steps .

  33. Bonnie Says:

Wake me up is something happens.

  34. FearandSmear Says:

You may not like what I’m about to say but I think it’s true.

This gives David Addington a boner.

He is getting the constitutional showdown he’s been wanking to in his dreams since the early 70’s.

He wants to shove their face in it….and he just might, too.

He’s that good and Congress is that lame.

And I have ALMOST completely given in to hopeless cynical-f**kism.

  35. Robt Says:

Just be ready for these guys to go Scalia on them. You know, Scalia drew the difference of mistreatment (cruel and unusual treatment) and torture.

I suspect they will try to make the case that waterboarding is a technique of persuassion and not torture. Defining torture as bamboo shoots under the finger nails and disfiguremented bodies from breaking bones and the “rack”.

Therefore be prepared for President Bush to act on V.P. Cheney’s orders (I mean advice) to use his Presidential powers ordering them not to testify for reasons of Presidential privacy. I’m not sure if I remember what privacy is, do you?

  36. republicanSScareme Says:

“Former CIA Director George Tenet ‘is still in negotiations with the committee.” Since when does Congress have to negotiate with criminals?
