Last month, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) repeatedly made the false claim that Shi’a Iran is training Sunni al Qaeda. In a Washington Post discussion today, a questioner observed, “I’m surprised that more hasn’t been made out of all of the verbal slip ups by McCain.” The Post’s Michael Abramowitz brushed over McCain’s many gaffes, saying the press has sufficiently critical of McCain:
ABRAMOWITZ: I don’t think McCain is being cut a break by the press for verbal miscues: When he confused the Sunni and the Shia, the press was on it immediately.
As Media Matters has documented, media outlets including CNN, The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, Reuters, and the AP ignored or overlooked over the gaffe in their reporting. Just last week, Abramowitz stuck up for McCain’s premature declarations of Mission Accomplished in Iraq, stating:
ABRAMOWITZ: I think McCain will certainly be attacked over the war during the campaign but I doubt that he will be blamed for “Mission Accomplished” because he was always more sober than than the White House about progress in Iraq.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again –
I can’t wait for the presidential debates!
Can’t you just hear the “gaffes”??? Watch for the box on McCain’s back, or the soup cans and string running to Lieberman.

Or, in other words, “business as usual” for the “liberal media.”

May 6th, 2008 at 4:06 pmThe other day I called a Mormon a Catholic by mistake, boy was he pissed. I explained that I just misspoke, but he wouldn’t let it drop, said the Catholic Church was the Church of Satan.
Silly mistake, could have happened to anyone. Good thing I am just a peon and not a person of power whose confused mumblings might send a message.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:07 pmThe main stream press isn’t covering McCain’s misstatements and his completely off the radar remarks.
Michael Abramowitz is not a journalist. Just a shill.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:08 pmThis is satire by the Abramowitz, right? Or is the author confirming membership in the: “I forgot, and I forget a lot of things” voting bloc in our nation?
May 6th, 2008 at 4:09 pmAbramovitz also added,
“John McCain is a maverick free-talker after all, who did 5 years in a tiger cage for his country. Have I mentioned what a maverick he is? I mean how can you possibly say we’ve been easy on such a tough SOB like Saint John the Hero?”
May 6th, 2008 at 4:11 pmThis is just unbelievable. They spend the better part of two months parsing every word that Reverend Wright said in the past, and attributing it to Obama, but on at least four separate occasions that we know of, McCain demonstrates an inability to distinguish between the two major groups trying to kill each other in Iraq, and the press apparently thinks it’s cute or something. Until I see some analysis of this, then we have to assume that McCain is getting a free ride.

There’s a war going on for your mind
Media mavens mount surgical strikes from trapper keeper collages and online magazine racks
Cover girl cutouts throw up pop-up ads
Infecting victims with silicone shrapnel
Worldwide passenger pigeons deploy paratroopers
Now it’s raining pornography
Lovers take shelter
Post-production debutantes pursue you in Nascar chariots
They construct ransom letters from biblical passages and bleed mascara into holy water supplies
There’s a war going on for your mind
Industry insiders slang test tube babies to corporate crackheads
They flash logos and blast ghettos
Their embroidered neckties say “stop snitchin’”
Conscious rappers and whistleblowers get stitches made of acupuncture needles and marionette strings
There is a war going on for your mind
Professional wrestlers and vice presidents want you to believe them
The desert sky is their bluescreen
They superimpose explosions
They shout at you
“pay no attention to the men behind the barbed curtain
Nor the craters beneath the draped flags
Those hoods are there for your protection
And meteors these days are the size of corpses
There’s a war going on for your mind

Yes, my local paper had a banner headline and ran with the story on page one for a week. They did the same thing last year when McCain was claiming he strolled through a peaceful Baghad market. They really roughed him up and didn’t drop the story for weeks!
That’s the press, here in Opposite World.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:15 pm“More sober” than a dry drunk – what a recommendation!
/snark off
May 6th, 2008 at 4:17 pmMcCain has NOT been sober about his pronouncements on Iraq. He was cheerleading along with the Mission Accomplished bullshit, echoing what Cheney and Bushstump were saying about ‘dead enders’ and ‘in the last throes.’
May 6th, 2008 at 4:20 pmHeard a young fella recently, after watching his dad stumble on a memory, describe it as “A McCain moment.”
Not a senior moment, but “a McCain moment”
“McCain moment” as a coined-phrase is very versatile. Along with a memory lapse moment, it also could be used in response to a temper tantrum, a flip-flop, or an awkward lie.
Or a dumb statement like “100 years.”
The vernacular of street politics and it’s ongoing evolution never ceases to amuse me.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:21 pmMost Zionists support old men who like war.
For example, take McCain…please!
May 6th, 2008 at 4:24 pmI’m starting to have a ‘McCain moment’ about the whole press attitude. Are they so stupid as to keep this crap up? Can’t they see that the trends are not in their favor and that it would behoove them to may, oh gosh, I don’t know, DO THEIR JOBS and factually report on what McCain is misspeaking, misspoking, misapplying, mismanaging and mistaking?
May 6th, 2008 at 4:26 pmIf Cindy McCain ever comes down, I wonder if her eyes will focus…
May 6th, 2008 at 4:26 pmWho is this Abramowitz putz-person anyway and why are we supposed to take his word for anything?
May 6th, 2008 at 4:27 pmI would like to ask that everybody PLEASE go and send this putz the Media Matters FACTS on the lack of MCinsane coverage!
Bombard this prick!

Nothing is going to change with the media thay are bought and paid for just like our politicians.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:56 pmABRAMOWITZ: I don’t think McCain is being cut a break by the press for verbal miscues: When he confused the Sunni and the Shia, the press was on it immediately.

Um…maybe that’s because confusing the Sunni and the Shia is like confusing the Union with the Confederate Rebels? The Axis and the Allies? The IRA and the British Parliament? The Yankees and the Red Sox? This is something that someone who wants to be president should know.
If McCain had done this once and had immediately corrected himself without Lieberman prompting him, that could be written off as a misspeak. But he did this several times — which indicates that he was deliberately attempting to conflate a Sunni terrorist organization with Iran to ramp up support for bombing Iran OR he truly IS a senile, confused old man. Either way, it deserves media attention.
