McCain on equal pay: ‘I don’t think you’re doing anything to help the rights of women.’

Last month, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) skipped the vote on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would have made it easier for women and other workers to pursue pay discrimination claims. At the time, McCain explained his opposition to the bill by saying that instead of equal pay protection, women simply needed “education and training.“ Asked about his opposition to the bill at a townhall today, McCain told a 14-year old girl that he didn’t think protections for equal pay would do “anything to help the rights of women“:

McCain singled out a 14-year old woman who questioned why he opposes eliminating the statute of limitations on lawsuits over workplace discrimination, arguing it amounted to opposing “equal rights for women.”

“If you eliminate the statutes of limitations, and you make it unending, you may be violating the rights of the individuals who are being sued, whether they’re a man or a woman,” the senator responded. “I don’t think you’re doing anything to help the rights of women, except maybe help trial lawyers and others in that profession.”

McCain has a long record of failure on women’s issues, earning him a 0 percent rating from NARAL ProChoice America six years in a row, from 2001-2007.

Moron McCain just doesn’t have a clue about simple reality: a new law with legal teeth to help women get equal pay will help women get equal pay. Duh… Even a child of 71 can figure that one out… Unless he or she is too farking senile to actually being able to think a simple thought…

I have a question for corporatist McCain: should we refer to corporations as “he” or “she”?

  3. hussein toasterhead says:

Well thank goodness Senator McCain is sticking up for those poor, poor corporations who could be victimized by lawsuits. If he doesn’t speak up for the glass ceiling, who will?

  4. raynman says:

It’s a good thing we have McCain to defend these corporations and their oh so small and untrained legal staffs from the legal juggernaut that a woman who’s been making $10/hr less than her male counterparts can bring to bear.

McCain’s response on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is about as archaic as if this was 1964 and he said something like “Why eliminate Jim Crow? The civil rights act won’t do anything to help the rights of black Americans, and all it will do is help trial lawyers. Besides, things are just fine the way they are.”

Since McCain seems to feel that the statute of limitations should stay, perhaps he would be willing to introduce a bill that would require employers to disclose their payroll information to all employees, so those who are being discriminated against will at least be aware of it while the clock is ticking?

Yeah, CNN was covering how she is still trying to coerce superdelegates. She is going to fight all the way to the Convention it seems.
Rawstory has an article about a superdelegate that felt Clinton was trying to bribe her for her vote.

  35. JMOHR says:

This issue just again highlights the deference that the Republican elite makes to their corporate masters. The case involved a woman who was obviously discriminated against by her company. It took years for her to discover that her pay raises were not keeping up with those of male plant managers. She was consistently rated ahead of her peers in performance. Additional education would not have helped her. Pay is kept secret by most employers with some companies willing to fire employees who spread what they get. It makes it hard for an aggrieved employee to discover the discrimination since she would not know what her peers are getting or whether a lower pay raise for a year actually reflected a temporary performance issue or a financial conditions. However, you would only have 180 days to discover it and make your decision.

The corporation comes out ahead. It is literally told that it comes off free if it can make it for six months. Women, who have historically been underpaid, are simply cannon fodder to feed corporate greed. Indeed, most corporations probably do not look at it as sex discrimination, it is just another trick they can get away with to maximize profits.

Well. The Alpha and Omega of my admiration for McCain is the moral heroism he showed by not accepting his captors offer of release from Hell on Earth in the Hanoi Hilton unless his fellow POW’s came with him. I can only hope I’d be made of that stern of stuff, but if you can’t admire that you can’t admire much.

On the war, I am very torn. Obama would be a huge gamble on the foreign policy front. He would either completely baffle and bamboozle the Irans of the world and perhaps remake international politics without a shot being fired. That is the Progressive ideal vision; it could work. Or it could fail utterly, ans the price could be steep indeed. McCain’s got a more conservative view of how force plays into human history and international politics, which tends to jive more with my beliefs about the way the world really is, instead of how I wish it was.

His age doesn’t bother me in and of itself – that is why I mentioned the debates, I am curious if he is as befuddled as he is being made out to be or if it is all contextual. Most often, when I hear him talk he doesn’t come across as totally out of it, but the debates will reveal that. He held his own during the Republican debates.

His immigration policy seems pretty similar to Obamas, though he has been forced to the Right somewhat on the security front which I am okay with.

In all, without dissecting his every position (we have six months to do that) I think he was by far the best candidate the R’s ran this season, and I think even many Progressives would agree with that. I am currently leaning toward Obama. But I am an independent and I haven’t made up my mind yet.

    Response to Keltoi:

McCain showed great heroism during his time as a POW and that is a good thing. It is too dated and really does not speak to whether he would be a good president. McCain has lost a good deal of moral courage through the political process. He just panders and flip-flops too much. His embracing and now going one up on Bush tax cuts and his policies generally reflect an extension of the Bush years. I am concerned about his age and ability to keep up in the office. Reagan showed declining mental processes by the time that he left office. Besides, McCain just is not that smart. He concedes ignorance of academic issues, he graduated number 5 from the bottom of his class at the naval academy. His support of a gas tax holiday was mere pandering or an awful ignorance of economic issues.

McCain’s POW record should not be the primary criteria by which we judge him.

If I were Prez and I knew that JAM or Al-Badr militiamen were being trained by Hezbollah or Al-Quds inside Iran or Syria I would have to very, very seriously consider using airstrikes to destroy those camps. I would owe it to the troops on the ground who would otherwise have to fight those same men in the casbah. Same thing with Iranian munitions factories turning out EFPs being used.

I am certain McCain feels the same way. I am not as certain Obama does. If I became convinced he didn’t I would have a hard time voting for him. But I am very hopeful this is a question that will be made clear during the debates.

  92. gummitch says:

    Prytania Says:

How much do you really know about Cindy McCain, John McCain’s wife. All I have ever seen is this beautiful, well dressed blonde woman standing by his side. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal on Cindy McCain. I was surprised how talented and involved with world affairs and problems she is. This is a summary of the article.

She has had two back surgeries and became addicted to pain killers. She talks openly about it which she says is part of the recovery process.

This is what happens when you think the Wall Street Journal is an objective source for information about a Republican.

You should read this before you go on about how open Cindy was about her addiction.

What McEachern and the others didn’t know was that, far from being a simple, honest admission designed to clear her conscience and help other addicts, Cindy McCain’s storytelling had been orchestrated by Jay Smith, then John McCain’s Washington campaign media advisor. And it was intended to divert attention from a different story, a story that was getting quite messy.

I know, because I had been working on that story for months at Phoenix New Times. I had finally tracked down the public records that confirmed Cindy McCain’s addiction and much more, and the McCains knew I was about to get them. Cindy’s tale was released on the day the records were made public.

But the story I was pursuing was not so much about Cindy McCain’s unfortunate addiction. It was much more about her efforts to keep that story from coming to light, and the possible manipulation of the criminal justice system by her husband and his cohorts.

  93. texaslady says:

As I recall this was about McCain’s refusal to back help for women or people not being paid the same for the same work. This would fit with McCain’s treating the military with the same disdain. And why would Americans want that type of leadership ? Strange that someone who was a POW to forget others suffering from the effects of an illegal war.

I despise bullies and you are as childish a bully as I have ever seen.

You possess all the depth of a drop of bug urine , which you eerily resemble physically………….

    Oooohhh,hurt me, hurt me.
That one was about the maturity level of a 12 year old.

I’ll keep poking at ya to find out.
Been too long since I had a troll to torment, this will be fun.
