Today, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled “that a 2004 ban against gay marriage also blocks governments and state universities from offering health insurance to the partners of gay workers. … Up to 20 public universities, community colleges, school districts and local governments in Michigan have benefits policies covering at least 375 gay couples.”

Another empty victory for bigots. God, I hate bigots.
May 7th, 2008 at 5:55 pmWell, that sucks.
May 7th, 2008 at 5:56 pmThe 21st Century is arriving a little late this year.
Yoo, hoo! America! Time to wake up now!
May 7th, 2008 at 5:56 pmNothing like an already economically depressed state accelerating its own brain drain through the auspices of bigotry.
May 7th, 2008 at 5:56 pmIf this issue really was about moral beliefs, but it is about money, money that domestic partners would get in Social Security benefits, medical insurance on and on. I am sick of someone’s religous belief dictating our laws.

Astute observation, paleolib, but, perhaps, they want to breed Republicans.

That can be done simply by visiting your local Porta-San or septic tank ……………….
May 7th, 2008 at 6:11 pmAs a former resident of the great lake state, I’m glad I do not live there any longer.
Go Wings!
May 7th, 2008 at 6:19 pmAnother victory for the XianFundiesWho’dLikeToTakeUsBackToTheMiddleAges.
May 7th, 2008 at 6:19 pmCan anyone tell me what they are afraid of? Is it that people just might be happy, is that the problem?
May 7th, 2008 at 6:21 pmMust we always have somebody to spit on? Is that the American way? Is that what make us a “Christian” nation?
May 7th, 2008 at 6:39 pmSince gay marriage is not recognized in Michigan, then it’s logical that health benefits to partners of gay workers shouldn’t be allowed either.
May 7th, 2008 at 6:45 pmFirst change the gay mariage ban, then…
Actually Annie, it’s not logical. If gay marriage were legal then there wouldn’t be the need for health benefits for same sex couples. It’s precisely because same sex couples can’t get married that they need other protections. It’s kind of obvious really.
The bigots who are against this are afraid of their own closets. Just ask larry craig.
May 7th, 2008 at 6:55 pmMichigan is the most economically depressed state in this country right now. Businesses and residents are leaving in droves. This state now has a law and a Supreme court ruling that effectively makes it an inhospitable state for a not-insignificant segment of the population. This will surely encourage more people to leave the state and discourage others from moving their or starting businesses there. I certainly wouldn’t want to live in a state that wouldn’t welcome the relationships of my friends or make it just as easy for them to make a living there as it would be for me and my spouse.
The decision is a ridiculous interpretation of a stupid law.

Moto-We hate them gays
May 7th, 2008 at 7:22 pmMy wife and I know many gay couples.
May 7th, 2008 at 7:22 pmThey are as happy as we are.
This Sunday we will be married for 35 years.
Why can’t gay couples celebrate their love? (Lesbians included.)
Love is love.
If you don’t like it, remember that Jesus said love and accept everyone. God forgives everyone. Maybe that is why fundamentalists are against gays. God forgives them for their radical views?
But the gays much make sure they pay their fair share in taxes or go to jail. Yes no benefits for gays but they have to pay benefits for everyone else. Talk about Equal Rights!
May 7th, 2008 at 7:26 pmWe can’t be having any “special” rights for teh gays.
Giving them partner benefits might make them forget that they are going to burn in hell for all eternity.
May 7th, 2008 at 7:35 pm/sarc
Michigan is mired in the past. Someday they may join the real world community.
May 7th, 2008 at 8:19 pmCan someone, anyone explain in simple terms so that I might understand the absurd premise that gay unions can not be dignified becuase they pose a “threat” to heterosexual unions. I never get that part? Am I just an idiot or does that stupid canard make no sense?
May 7th, 2008 at 9:20 pmLet’s have some more court stacking–elect more Republicons. We need more hate in this country.
May 7th, 2008 at 9:35 pmI bet most Conservative leaning courts will follow this ruling!
May 7th, 2008 at 9:39 pmSomebody is listening to God. It is Michigan.
May 7th, 2008 at 9:45 pmWhen you follow God’s principles, he rewards you. I feel a surge of blessings coming toward the Michigan area. Michigan, accept it.
May 7th, 2008 at 9:48 pmActually Daryll, that “surge” you feel is explosive diarrhea. God sent it to you for presuming to judge your fellow humans.
May 7th, 2008 at 10:43 pmSorry D but Michigan is a someplace not a somebody. Still I am heartened to see you a little more revitalized. Still the real crazy zeal is lacking but I think you might be on the mend
best-
May 7th, 2008 at 10:55 pm.
Daryll believes God will reward him for condemning and denying his fellow neighbor the common decency afforded by God to Daryll… How very Christian of Darryl… NO?
Hea Darryl,
I’m gay…
I’ll save a seat for you in hell… MINE!
.
May 8th, 2008 at 3:50 amGay people pay the same in taxes but do not get basic rights. Makes absolutely no sense.
May 8th, 2008 at 3:50 amGosh, this should serve as a huge boost to that state’s robust commerce and economy.
May 8th, 2008 at 7:42 amAs a fellow Michigander, I lower my head in shame.
Our jobs here are being outsourced exponentially.
The economy sucks.
Gas prices are unheard of.
Crime has increased.
But what should we worry about?
Making sure them thar gays don’t get benefits like everyone else.
Again, as a Christian, I am ashamed.
(Oh, and yes Dr. Matt….GO WINGS!)
May 8th, 2008 at 9:35 amAs a Mi resident I was floored when I heard this judgement by the courts. I have gay friends and I know they are disheartened and saddened by the religious REICH and their hatred of gays and anything that is not REICH. It is a sad commentary on the state of this country and where we are headed because of religious persecution of gays, discrimination because of skin color or gender bias and not to mention the current state of economic class warfare, it is sad!!!!!!
May 8th, 2008 at 9:48 amActually, Daryll, if you could look past your own religious bigotry and try to understand that we, as gays, ARE HUMAN BEINGS, TOO - then perhaps you wouldn’t be on such a high religiously screwed up horse.
You are celebrating the forced denial of common decency that any common-sense thinking person abandoned long ago. But I guess religion doesn’t need common sense. It’s all a big academic exercise for you BECAUSE YOU AREN’T AFFECTED BY THE RULING.
May 8th, 2008 at 10:31 amAnd another thing, Daryll, are you following God’s principals by being hateful toward a whole group of people? Come out of the closet already!
May 8th, 2008 at 10:32 ammethinks daryll is a self-loathing homosexual in denial.
May 8th, 2008 at 2:54 pmAwww sad new for fudge packers.
May 8th, 2008 at 3:17 pmIf economic disaster is a blessing then so be it. God will indeed bless them with a harsh lesson. Scare away everyone with half a brain and see where that gets you.
