“The Bush administration has not found disaster recovery files for White House e-mails from a three-month time period in 2003…raising the possibility that messages sent before and after the invasion of Iraq may never be recovered.” The White House claims a court proposal to search and preserve White House e-mail records would “yield marginal benefits at best, while imposing substantial burdens and disruptions.”

Despite scattered problems attributed to Indiana’s new photo ID law, a record-breaking 1.6 million voters cast ballots in Indiana’s Democratic and GOP contests yesterday. This figure “smashed the 1992 primary turnout of a little more than 1 million votes.” North Carolina also reported “unprecedented” turnout.

Today, the House is set to begin debating a sweeping housing rescue bill that “could see the government buy up $15 billion of abandoned homes.” It would also help half a million homeowners facing foreclosure by offering “fresh spending, tax credits and a new government guarantee on many risky loans to bolster the national housing market.” President Bush has threatened to veto the legislation.

Anti-war Republican Rep. Walter Jones (NC-03) “comfortably defeated” a primary challenger in his conservative congressional district yesterday by a margin of 60-40% after facing stiff opposition “over his outspoken stance” against the Iraq war. Camp Lejuene, one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the country, is located in Jones’s district.

House Veterans Committee chairman Bob Filner (D-CA) “lashed out” at Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary James Peake yesterday during a hearing for having previously attempted to “cover up” veterans suicide data. “What we see is a pattern — deny, deny, cover up, cover up,” Filner said.

In the “most specific assertions to date,” lawyers for detainees at Guantanamo Bay say they believe that government agents have “monitored their conversations.” One lawyer is so concerned that she said in an affidavit that she is “no longer accepting new clients of any type because she could not assure them of confidentiality.”

Yesterday, EPA Associate Deputy Administrator Jason Burnett – dubbed “the John Yoo of the EPA” — announced his departure from the agency. Burnett had been responsible for crafting legal arguments that promoted arsenic in drinking water, catered to industry on mercury regulations, overruled scientists on soot health standards, and defied the Supreme Court’s decision on global warming.

President Bush “sent the Senate a new slate of Federal Election Commission nominees” yesterday in an apparent effort “to break a Senate confirmation deadlock.” But the move was “greeted coolly” by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) because Bush retained Hans von Spakovsky and removed David Mason, who clashed recently with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

And finally: Radar writes, “Looking to steal a car? Tucker Carlson’s unlocked Volvo station wagon is available and probably in the parking lot at D.C. hub The Palm right now.” Carlson recently told The Hill that he never locks his car, even though a woman once stalked him. He also once found a man “asleep and wrapped in newspaper in the back seat of his Volvo station wagon. ‘I beat on the windows and made him get out,’ he says.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

It’s true that many of our military families tend to lean Republican, and Camp Lejeune is no exception. However, even though military families are understandably proud of their loved ones in uniform, they are quite weary of the third, fourth, and fifth deployments to a pointless cause. It makes perfect sense that an anti-war candidate would do well in their district, regardless of party.

I’ll be interested to see if he maintains his stance on the war if rethuglican campaign money is hanging in the balance.

I predict a flood of super delegates coming out for Obama today. I suspect he has had them in his pocket for a while and he will release them today to put forth the inevitability of his candidacy. Unfortunately HillaryRove will probably try to spin her 2 point win in Indiana as a mandate to stay in the race. Is there anything that will stop her? Common sense obviously has been thrown out the window. I hate to say it, but I am starting to feel sorry for Hillary.

I’m just waiting for Hillary to mention the “African-Americans turning out for Obama in North Carolina” (never mind that white voters supported Obama in droves here), and also for her to tout her razor thin margin in Indiana as proof that “she can win the big states” (Indiana is not a “big” state, while North Carolina is the 10th largest state in the country).

Meanwhile, Obama’s speech last night was gracious, inspirational, and not mean-spirited. Yes, he criticized the Republican policies of the past eight years and said we need change, but he didn’t trash Hillary — in fact, he spent a fair percentage of the speech touting party unity. The only snark I could hear in the entire speech (and it was a mild one) was when he referred to North Carolina as a “big state, a swing state”.

And now that we have so many new registered Democrats here, there’s no reason why we can’t be blue in November. Even with the high level of military here.

  27. DRxJ Says:

of course, I probably should spell the first name of our next president correctly.
Make that Barack, not Barak. There, now at least it doesn’t look like president Borat!!!!

Just curious, why the new hurdle regarding the requirement of photo ID when voting (and yes, I did vote yesterday).
I thought the process of going to your voting district, presenting you voter ID card, or simply announcing your name and address, to which the “voter police” would highlight your name (indicating you were present and voted, and prevent anyone else using your name), worked pretty well.
Not really sure why the extra step was warranted.

That still won’t help the millions of people in this country who don’t have any of those forms of ID. I was shocked to read an article, the last time this issue came up, that said there were millions of people in this country who don’t have a birth certificate or a drivers license. They mostly live in rural areas and are mostly over 70. These are people who were born at home and rarely get off their farm. Getting these people photo ID is very difficult. So, should they not be allowed to vote because some Republican is scared that they might be impersonating someone else to vote?

Besides, I’m not really sure what the fear is. If someone comes in a votes in your name and then you show up to vote, then you won’t be allowed to vote. There are not going to be two votes in your name. And since there have been zero proven cases of this happening, whats the reason for the law other than to disenfranchise voters?

I certainly hope you are correct about the super delegates. At first, I too, felt sorry for Hillary at one time, but she did this to herself. She could have been the first woman president, but her sense of entitlement did her in.

She figured she had everything wrapped up with Super Tuesday and she found out otherwise. She ran on her name and the fact that her husband had such high ratings. When that didn’t work, she turned to the Karl Rove method of winning elections. I no longer feel sorry for her.

  31. Marie Says:

Obama was his usual gracious self last night. He has the nomination sewed up, yet he can let Clinton make her own way to the door on her terms. I don’t expect she will drop out soon, but perhaps wait until she pulls another victory or two in the primary season, and then she will leave on a high note. Obama will let her leave with dignity and he will retain his usual calm and graceful demeanor.
Even her “victory” speech last night wasn’t really a victory speech to my ears, but more of a rally to her supporters, and — a little bit of talk about party unity.
The most important thing to keep in mind is winning in November. The Repugs are in trouble in many ways; McCain being a huge anchor for them for one. Yesterday he spoke of appointing more Supreme Court judges like Roberts and Alito; the thought of which should send chills down the spine of every American patriot.

  32. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I think Obama should, from this day forward, ignore HillaryRove and take on McCain. Only address her if she does something particularly nasty. Otherwise, ignore her.

I also think that Obama needs to run more against Republican policies than specifically against McCain. I have a real premonition that McCain is not going to be the Republican candidate. I think they have put him out there as their sacrificial lamb, but at the convention they are going to choose Romney/Huckabee. They will probably say that McCain is too sick. He does, after all, have cancer. That’s another inconvenient truth the media is ignoring.

  33. McWars Says:

    Good morning Bilbo,

Hillary’s herculean comeback effort was obviously minimized last night, as projected.

Every additional point Obama adds to his delegate lead has strengthened his political dollar, now that only small states remain. My jaw dropped last night at the projected margin at which he won NC, the last big state. Final estimates set his margin of victory at least 10%. I think it will be more.

As for TP, I hope they didn’t come on board in 2005 in anticipation of Hillary’s campaign. Her campaign did take a former TP staff member to become director of research, didn’t they?

  42. And the beat goes on Says:

Pentagon Targeted Iran for Regime Change after 9/11

WASHINGTON - Three weeks after the 9/11 terror attacks, former U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld established an official military objective of not only removing the Saddam Hussein regime by force but overturning the regime in Iran, as well as in Syria and four other countries in the Middle East, according to a document quoted extensively in then Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Douglas Feith’s recently published account of the Iraq war decisions.

Feith’s account further indicates that this aggressive aim of remaking the map of the Middle East by military force and the threat of force was supported explicitly by the country’s top military leaders.

Feith’s book, “War and Decision”, released last month, provides excerpts of the paper Rumsfeld sent to President George W. Bush on Sep. 30, 2001 calling for the administration to focus not on taking down Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network but on the aim of establishing “new regimes” in a series of states by “aiding local peoples to rid themselves of terrorists and to free themselves of regimes that support terrorism.”

In quoting from that document, Feith deletes the names of all of the states to be targeted except Afghanistan, inserting the phrase “some other states” in brackets. In a facsimile of a page from a related Pentagon “campaign plan” document, the Taliban and Saddam Hussein regimes are listed as “state regimes” against which “plans and operations” might be mounted, but the names of four other states are blacked out “for security reasons”.

“…millions of people in this country who don’t have a birth certificate or a drivers license. They mostly live in rural areas and are mostly over 70. These are people who were born at home and rarely get off their farm. Getting these people photo ID is very difficult.”
    _______________________________________________

Here in North Carolina (and I assume in other states as well), the Department of Motor Vehicles addresses the problem of people who have no birth certificates by being fairly lenient with any kind of evidence of birth. It’s not uncommon for elderly people looking for a photo ID to provide an old family bible with their birth recorded in it. When people were born at home in rural areas decades ago, this was how births were recorded, and the NC DMV understands this (although they aren’t going to accept a 20-year old applicant who just jotted his name in a brand new bible — common sense is exercised). My grandfather was born at home in the country and never had an official birth certificate. However, his birth was announced in a small rural newspaper, and he kept this dated clipping for years as proof of his birth.

All that being said, however — it’s obvious that the Indiana law is more about disenfrancising voters than curtailing voter fraud, as you said. Oh, advocates of ID laws always seem to have stories about carloads of people coming to the polls to vote, going around the block and arriving to vote again, dead people voting, etc. etc. But where are the specifics? Have there been any specific cases of this type of voter fraud that have even been worthy of investigation? If people really are serious about curtailing voter fraud, they should start with machine hacking, voter caging, intimidating robo-calls to voters suggesting their registration is void, and other similar mischief.

I clearly want NC to go true blue. I spent the first decade of my life in Jacksonville, NC, home of Camp Lejuene, “Expeditionary Forces in Readiness”

Say, what kind of governor do you think your state will elect this fall? A democrat? A dixiecrat?

Even her “victory” speech last night wasn’t really a victory speech to my ears, but more of a rally to her supporters,

and more of a plea for finacial help…

  61. satirev Says:

Finding these missing emails is a piece of cake and everyone knows it. These suspicious emails will be used to indict everyone associated with administration for “war crimes”. Let’s get on with it. The technology is there. This is pure, undadulterated bullshit.

  62. satirev Says:

Katy: Good catch. I noticed her less-then-victorious commentary as well, as did some of the pundits commenting on it. I guess it’s apparent now that with only a 2% win over Obama in Indiana (which would be comprised of Rethugs changing party just to vote for her because they fear an Obama presidency so much) the delegates are going to jump ship. Besides, there’s no way she can catch up with Obama. He’s smokin’ her at every turn now.

  63. GeeDubs Says:

It was the same when the shill from the Republicans was saying they would never be able to tell who altered the Congressional legislation about the road in Florida earmarked by Don Young of Alaska. They know who did it, they’re all hiding behind each other.

  64. satirev Says:

Besides, how can Hillary, the candidate, EVER distance herself from her Iraq war vote? Of her votes on pursue the same nonsense with Iran? Then there’s her lie about sniper fire - how can anyone interpret that any other way than negatively?

The words of one’s pastor pale in comparison to a candidate caught lying. Hillary’s cooked.

  65. DieNowForPeace Says:

there WERE a great many repubs who voted for OBAMA, after all…
but, it’s probably not a stretch to say that those who voted for their favorite
    gal-to-hate were following limpball’s orders…

Clinton is also shown as being way ahead in polls in Kentucky which is coming up on May 20. This one is going until June folks.
    ________________________________________________

Indiana showed Clinton “way ahead” in polls leading up to yesterday’s primary — as much as 16 points less than a month ago. Yet Clinton only won by 22,412 votes, or 1.8%. So I wouldn’t put too much stock in the Kentucky polls.

I suspect that due to Hillary’s determination, this may go all the way to the convention in August. There aren’t enough pledged delegates left for either candidate to clinch a majority on pledged delegates alone, even if Florida and Michigan are factored into the mix in whatever scenario is most favorable to Hillary. Therefore, Hillary is going to go tooth and nail for the supers, and she will use every absurd argument she can think of to sway them.

Unfortunately for her, Obama is focusing on party unity and beating the GOP in the fall. He is doing this in a gracious and high-road manner, which is making Hillary’s tactics look petty and pathetic by comparison.

And the story is even worse as these were retired nuns, many in wheelchairs, etc. such that getting them to the DMV is a major undertaking.

  74. satirev Says:

Miss Molly: What’s occurring right now is a concerted effort to skew the polls. Everyone knows that exit polls have been the “gold standard” for predicting elections. Everyone also knows that in 04 the scrubbing of the exit polls was massive in Ohio. I find it ridiculous that none of the other polls include what has become our “second party” - the I’s. How can they say that McTorture and the 28%ers could be in a dead heat with anyone? Particularly when the reg. dems and reg. I’s total 72%??? The must be taking their math from Bush’s library.

They’re attempting to prove that the polls are not accurate so they can “put in the fix” on the voting machines without detection or counter argument.

Makes sense to me, Snagglepuss, I mean Exit Stage Left. Whatever source you can find to bolster your, hem, ‘argument’ is what will get you through the night. Even if it shows up the idiocy of your argument.

Am I misreading your syntax here? I’m not sure which of my idiocies you’re referring to.

And that would be MISTER Snagglepuss…or as I prefer…Jack

  76. McWars Says:

Yep, I think Obama has bounced back from the ‘elitist’ crap and has broken the door lock of the room holding him and his pastor. Hillary/McCain/MSM thought swallowing the key would do the trick.

And thanks, DnFP for letting us in on Hill’s financial troubles.

At least Mitt was willing to do his own math and bow out despite depositing a chunk of his fortune into his bastardized campaign.

She’ll be forced to exit the race next month — with her campaign at least $10M in debt. Additionally, the couple’s fortune is down $11.4M as of now.

  77. satirev Says:

I smell the acrid odor of a coming revolution. Perhaps it’s necessary to the resurrection of our democracy after the gutting Bush and his cadre of criminals have done to it. Time will tell. The people are becoming very restless and extremely angry.

These same people are disgusted with Hillary’s smear tactics which resonate and echo the tactics of the Repukes. When people are starving and losing their jobs because they can no longer afford the commute to work, not to mention losing their homes, these kinds of crude shenanigans are repulsive. It’s obvious to me that the lure of a “third term” by Bill is reaching a lustfilled crescendo. He’s so hungry to get back into the WH that he’s drooling all over himself.

The people are rejecting these smear tactics and we will see traditional Repuke stronghold states turning Democratic in the Fall. These stronghold states are in a state of flux and the Democratic party is in a state of confusion.

No more dirty pool from Hillary. The fractured party cannot withstand her dirty, lowball tactics any longer before it implodes.

  78. MarkD Says:

In other words, the White House admits that it broke federal law and did not follow the Presidential Records Act.

These clowns just handed over their own indictments on a silver platter. Sure, it’s not exactly a high crime, but Al Capone was nailed for tax evasion, not murder and corruption.

So what in the holy hell is Pelosi and Reid waiting for?! DO SOMETHING ALREADY!!

I wonder if next year, after a Democratic windfall, the telecoms will release all those e-mails that “went missing” in 2003 AS WELL as all those RNC e-mails that they are illegally holding on to. If the surveilance program is as in depth as has been reported, then everything has been intercepted and backed up by this Administration as well as on back up tapes at the telecom. An Obama Presidency could settle this handily by offering immunity to the telecoms in return for coming forward with all these missing e-mails as well as details about the Bush Administrations illegal surveilance activities. There should be more than enough retrievable data to put many of these scumballs away for a long time.

    ________________________________________________

I predict our next governor will be Democrat Beverly Perdue, who just spent the last eight years as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor.

She’s considered a moderate who wants to improve education, health care, and wages in the state, but also wants to attract new business to NC and stop the hemorrhaging of NC jobs overseas. My only real complaint about her is that she supported (and continues to support) the NC Lottery.

And we really don’t have “dixiecrats” anymore — they kind of died out with Strom Thurmond. There are still some holdouts, but they really don’t do all that well politically.

I honestly don’t think Hillary sees the Democratic Party as an entity that’s bigger than herself. I think she truly believes that she and Bill ARE the Democratic Party, and she is entitled to the nomination for this reason.

And if she can’t have the nomination, I don’t think it really matters to her if the party is in shreds. I suspect she would have a Cheney response — “So?”

Yes, the thing is that in other democracies the exit polls play a key role in verifying the legitimacy of the vote. In America in 2004, the Repubs and mainstream media simply blew off what the exit polls were shouting about the illegitimacy of that vote. In other countries, like Ukraine, if the exit polls do not match the “official” results, there can be a revolution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Revolution In the oldest existing democracy in the world, we allowed ourselves to be hoodwinked. What a joke. And it could easily happen again because nothing has changed.

They’ve been very good about getting everything counted and results published on Election Day, although this year, who knows? The Democrats have registered 115,000 new voters and turnout for this primary is likely to be huge, especially because vote by mail removes all those problems with getting to the polling place, standing in line, etc.

There is also a vigorous primary campaign between two liberal Democrats to determine who takes on Gordon Smith in November. And it’s a measure of Smith’s nervousness about that result (especially with the huge increase in Democrats and shrinkage of Republicans) that he’s already taking out commercials attacking both candidates and calling himself the candidate of “change.” Seriously.

And here in Portland, an interesting mayoral race, city council races and county commissioners. All in all, should be fun and get a lot of voters.

    ______________________________________________

Her mouthpieces have been spinning so much that they now have the world’s biggest ball of yarn. Clinton didn’t “come from behind” in Indiana. She was leading in Indiana for the past two months — often by double digits. That lead got eroded as Election Day drew closer, with an occasional poll putting Obama slightly ahead (however, an average of polls still showed Clinton in the lead).

Her double digit lead faded to a razor thin victory. If anything, it was Obama who came from behind.

However, Clinton’s talking heads are under orders to paint her as the odds-on favorite, no matter how absurd the story has to be.
