On Tuesday, 12 nuns in their 80s and 90s fell victim to Indiana’s strict voter ID law when they were turned away from the polls because they lacked a valid photo ID. Time’s Karen Tumulty notes that nuns in Missouri are now basically “rap[ping] the Supreme Court’s knuckles with a great big ruler” and objecting to these ineffective voter ID laws:
“This may sound like a good idea at first,” stated Sister Sandy Schwartz of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary regarding voter ID requirements, “but once you stop to think about who would really be affected, this is going to keep a lot of our loved ones from being able to vote.”
Today, the Missouri House gave final approval to a controversial constitutional amendment that pushes the state a step closer toward adopting a voter ID law. Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D) said that if approved, an ID requirement could “put the voting rights at risk for up to 240,000 registered Missouri voters.”

Why on earth would an honorable American want to discourage citizens from voting? What possible good could it bring to make them think that they are not welcomed into the democratic process. Oh yeah, now I have it: Republicans don’t like democracy unless they can rig the outcome.

May 8th, 2008 at 5:53 pmThe nuns may have a good argument that the Indiana law is invalid as applied to them in federal elections. They may have a valid claim of exemption under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (42 U.S.C. 2000bb et seq.), as interpreted in Gonzales v.

I am still interesting in knowing the great state of Missouri’s firearms purchasing laws. I have this hunch that the nuns would find it easier to be a “well armed militia” than a simple voter in a society where individual voter fraud is statistically zero.
May 8th, 2008 at 5:56 pmI find it truly amazing how the trolls never, EVER take a contrary position to anything these right wing fascists do or plan to do. You can scan retinas all you want, but it doesn’t address the issue of whether the person being scanned is a US Citizen. Unless, of course, they can provide the necessary documentation, in which case they wouldn’t need their damn retinas scanned.
What the trolls and other Republics continually refuse to acknowledge is that a lot of Americans, especially old and poor Americans, were not born in hospitals and their births were not documented. In this case, at least some of the nuns had expired passports, which definitely had photos. Did they stop being citizens because they stopped traveling and didn’t need a passport?

Yet they were offered one, and they refused. So you’d prefer to GUARANTEE your vote didn’t count, than attempt to make it count? Where exactly would that ‘reluctance’ come from? Certainly not from a rational decision. Especially if it’s so critical to vote, and this law has been on the books for years, yet no attempt was made to get your free ID? Sorry, but this is political theater, pure and simple. These ladies were not disenfranchised, they chose not to vote out of their own volition.

Also a distortion. They told them their votes wouldn’t count unless they went and obtained their ID within 10 days - a reasonable period by most people’s standards.
Their votes won’t count, if they refuse to vote, and refuse to go get their IDs, but in both cases it wasn’t someone preventing them from voting, it was them CHOOSING not to vote, and to not get their IDs. Sorry, but this was a protest, pure and simple.

Try doing any of those things without any money… you’ll run into trouble, as well. So let’s just cut to the chase shall we?
A modest proposal…
We just need some type of bond to assure that people are who they say they are. When you arrive at the polling place you merely make a small deposit of some negligible amount, say $20, that assures the poll worker you are who you say you are.
May 8th, 2008 at 6:47 pmThen you are given a ballot and if the ballot is later determined to be valid the money is returned to you! Of course, if your ballot is deemed invalid for any reason then the State would keep that money and use the proceeds to improve voter security!
We’ll call it a poll tax!
Or maybe the poll dance fee!
Or maybe unconstitutional… that’s what the supreme court called it.

Between the taxi ride to the records office, the fees, and the time spent waiting, do you really have the stomach to tell a 90-year old person that they have to endure this ordeal just so that they can vote?

That is the standard GOP playbook: admit to nothing, if the other side is right - attack the character of the messenger. So, Nazi, instead of explaining what your position is/was/will be, you simply start calling people names. People who are much, much smarter than you. Your little GOP playbook might get you some mileage at Redstate or Malkins site, but not here. What a loser…

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews gave a speech last night at Harvard’s Institute of Politics Forum where he made a few eye-opening confessions:
“I am here to make something of a confession,” Matthews said. “Television is limited in the way it can tell the political story of our time.”
Matthews then went on with some confessions about the media. Via Michael Calderone at The Politico:
“Well, it’s not official.” (LAUGH) “Well, I don’t think Joe Scarborough has. And I don’t think Tucker Carlson did. And Keith does his thing. He does his thing–it’s something and it’s very successful. I do my thing. I don’t think that’s true. I think… my sense is that everybody that lives in New York is for Hillary.”
“The people I work with–all my bosses–seem to be for Hillary,” he added. “I just sense it. They don’t actually say it, but there’s no sense from the top I can tell you that it’s pro-Obama… by any means.
“That’s not what I get,” he continued. “And it was basically pro-war during the war.. the bosses were. And I was up against that. And if there’s anybody telling me to push Obama, I haven’t heard it yet. And by the way, they’re so fickle…. but there seems to be a New York thing about Hillary. Just the people from… it’s like the Yankees and the Mets… it’s their thing. You know? It’s Hillary. You know? And I feel it. I find it. It’s hard to figure sometimes. But I don’t know who you are talking about. I know who you are talking about.”

May 8th, 2008 at 7:01 pmI think it’s fun to get him to call me the c-word. :-D
I don’t, he was being very rude to you; but maybe he has limits to his vocabulary. I remember you didn’t like it when I referred to you as ‘Ma’am’ a few days ago. THAT was supposed to be a compliment. Cheers…Is is still chilly up in Idaho?

I was joking when I took “offense” at being called ma’am. I knew you were being complimentary. :)
Yes, he was being very rude to me, quite ugly in fact, and I know he’ll get to that level on his own. But I’d rather make him do it — he shows himself to be the pig he is on MY TERMS.
It is still a bit chilly here, but the sun has been shining all week, which is heavenly.
May 8th, 2008 at 7:10 pmGood for you! It’s always fun to read what you have to say.

Ten days would be a reasonable period of time to get an ID, but there are a couple of other factors worth considering.
1) What about the nuns who have no birth certificate or other ID? It takes ID to get ID, and if the election board won’t take a voter registration card as proof of identification, why would any other ID place, such as the DMV?
2) Are the nuns going to be able to get their photo ID at no charge? If they have to pay for identification that they need for no other purpose than to be able to vote, this amounts to a poll tax, which is illegal.

Yes. :-)
May 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pmFrom the AP article:
They weren’t given provisional ballots because it would be impossible to get them to a motor vehicle branch and back in the 10-day time frame allotted by the law, Sister McGuire said. “You have to remember that some of these ladies don’t walk well. They’re in wheelchairs or on walkers or electric carts.”
This is a law aimed at making it more difficult for the poor, the infirm and the elderly to vote, constituencies that typically tend to not vote Republican. The has been no proven need for this law. When this law is combined with wholesale voter purges, which well may have happened to these nuns, it stacks the deck even further.

May 8th, 2008 at 8:52 pmNuns, old people, veterans, soldiers, college students, anybody who just moved to the state from another state, the disabled (those who don’t drive), and others I can’t name will all be challenged at the polls in November unless the Democratic party passes a new law (redundant though it is) that guarantees the vote to any citizen of this country. You jump through their hoops and jump through their hoops, and still it isn’t enough. The Nazis will only be satisfied when only the rich white guys and Cindy McCain can vote. Screw em. Contact your state legislators if your state is on the verge of keeping you from voting. And Howard Dean might spend a few bucks and a few brain cells on telling people what they need to do in each state. If everybody knew where and how to register and where to vote, we wouldn’t have this problem, but both parties have cooperated in keeping voters stupid.
How about a class action suit to force uniform voter laws in every state for federal office? How about verifiable voting and required recounts if totals are within a certain percentage? I am so sick of this debate. Aren’t there some powerful experts or lawyers or elected officials out there who have the money and time and access and ideas (and who have taken oaths to uphold the constitution) to get this done? Or are they all working for Hillary Clinton? This is exactly what Karl Rove has been angling for all these years. Roberts and Alito have put the fascist frosting on the cake, and KKKarl must be laughing all the way to the bank.
May 8th, 2008 at 10:04 pmWell, if you know there is a Voter ID law in your state…shouldn’t affected voters be mobilizing now to put everything in-order instead of hoping for any retraction of the law? I’m all for fairness, but politics is anything but that. Plus I’ve stated before that having a valid state ID gives a person ownership of their identity. The GOP uses much more than electronic voting machine fraud to rig “swing” states/areas. Taking identities from groups of voters without an identification, spiking the vote in their favor and then they get away with it when it becomes an “irregularity” during the recount is becoming a standard tactic in their playbook.

Is the Indiana Supreme Court that ignorant to not even consider that oxymoron?

May 9th, 2008 at 1:01 amDon’t the Repubs. realize that our Supreme Court completely ignored the 24th amendment which prohibits a poll tax. The ID law is a poll tax. It may be free, but some people cannot get to the capital to get their 3rd Reich ID.

Clinton takes Indiana by a ‘razor’ and Obama wins North Carolina by a huge margin. Nevertheless, Kentucky, Montana and West Virginia are still to come.
The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive – and most likely to be decided by superdelegates
If you’re tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama
If you haven’t done so yet, please write a message to each of your state’s superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com
Obama Supporters:
Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it’s appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It’s that easy…
Clinton Supporters too …. !
It takes a moment, but what’s a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !

May 9th, 2008 at 6:53 amRepublican voter suppression writ large and completely white washed by the corporate Mainstream Media. How to commit election fraud while convincing the public you’re actually protecting the integrity of the election process. Stunning.
May 9th, 2008 at 8:42 amIf you don’t drive, or are poor, your so unamerican that you are deprived your vote.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:10 amIs this the USSR?
Might it be that if the price of gas becomes to high, people will give up driving, and let their licences and their vote expire?
May 9th, 2008 at 9:16 amConsequently, in the end, if you can afford gas you get to vote.
The Rapeublicans ALWAYS urge their side to VOTE ABSENTEE, even if they live at home and go nowhere.
As a paper ballot by mail, they know it will be counted. When I moved to Seattle, I was offered absentee as a choice and I took it.
EVERYONE should simply vote absentee, and ALL balloting be done by mail.
