Smerconish compares Arianna Huffington to a ‘hooker who gives up a john.’»

Today on MSNBC’s Hardball, right-wing radio host Michael Smerconish bashed Arianna Huffington — along with former “West Wing” actors Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff — for reporting that at a dinner party shortly after the 2000 election, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and his wife told Huffington that they didn’t vote for George Bush. Host Chris Matthews simply laughed and defended coziness between the press and politicians:

SMERCONISH: Look, I don’t get invited out anywhere. You do, Chris. … I’m grilling burgers in an hour in Philly. But let me ask you something. Isn’t this a violation of the dinner code? Isn’t this like a hooker who gives up a john? I mean, isn’t there some impropriety here?

MATTHEWS: I used to love that rule, that when you’re out having fun with each other, you weren’t sitting there with radios, you weren’t quoting them, you weren’t going to screw them in the morning. That’s the world I like to live in. But I have learned, everything you say can be used against you.

I think it’s Czechoslovakian for “McCain is sitting on my face”.

  2. Zappatero Says:

Matthews finally admits he’s not a journalist.

SMIRK-KNISH: Isn’t this like a hooker who gives up a john? I mean, isn’t there some impropriety here?

MATTHEWS: I used to love that rule, that when you’re out having fun…

I think Matthews just admitted to cavorting with hookers. Of course as a whore himself he should know the rules.

  4. abarts Says:

Arianna likes to play all sides. She played for the GOP, then switched. She swoons over Sen Obama, and bashes Sen Clinton at every turn.
HuffPo is a shell of what it once was.

Zappatero: Matthews finally admits he’s not a journalist

Yup, that’s the more important story here–not the two cents from the two-bit hack Smerconish, but Matthews admission of “the world I like to live in” where “your’e out having fun with each other”.

  6. Evergreen2U Says:

McCain, as a navy man, should have been aware that:
    Loose lips sink ships.

  7. Xisithrus Says:

This dinner code rule reeks of hypocrisy. Tell the truth in private and lie in public.

  8. 5th Estate Says:

Abarts…Arianna likes to play all sides

I’d say she’s more interested in her business than anything. Her profile has certainly increased since she launched Huffpo which frontpages a lot of crap these days.
BUT when she talks about Democratic policies on TV (rather than the politics) I find her very sharp and composed.
However, she’s got a keen eye for her own advancement and it shows.

  9. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

I think this is taking Tim Russert’s personal vendetta against Arianna Huffington a bit too far. Grow up, Timmy!

Yes, in what you just said the sentence before!

  11. Xisithrus Says:

Ahh, yes, the moral majority, blame the hooker not the hookee.

  12. Shayne Says:

Hard to understand why Smerconish never gets invited anywhere.

  13. jonny Says:

Smerconish & Tweety — johns if there ever were any. Which means, of course, pathetic suckers.

The NYT story backs Arianna bigtime — and they’re no friends of hers & vicey-versey:

Nice way to talk about woman and it’s become common. Well I guess the Republicans were right no need to Celebrate Mother’s Day anymore as woman no longer get respect.

  15. SP Biloxi Says:

And the media will cruise by the bigot Smerconish’s and Tweety’s comments like they did with Chelsea, Hillary, and now Huffington. MSNBC has shown their true colors as the biggest bigot cable network.

MSNBC: We report bigotry, you decide.

    Not as important as this:

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon is recommending changes in the handling of troops’ remains, after it was revealed that a crematorium contracted by the military handles both human and animal cremations.

A military official said there have been no instances or charges that human and pet remains were mixed. But officials are now recommending that troops’ remains be incinerated only at facilities that are dedicated entirely to humans, in order to avoid any appearance of a problem.

    Be proud you’re an American.

  36. curmudgeon Says:

The following news organizations back up Arianna’s story:

    1) The New York Times — http://www.nytimes.com/ 2008/ 05/ 09/ us/ politics/ 09huffington.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin

    2) The Washington Post —
    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/ the-trail/ 2008/ 05/ 09/ west_wing_actors_confirm_accou.html

    3) The Los Angeles Times –
    http://www.latimes.com/ news/ nationworld/ nation/ la-na-arianna7-2008may07,0,1169483.story

Oh, but the trolls will contend that the above represent the so-called “liberal news media.” Yeah, the same group that completely buried the story about Reverend Wright, but continued, 24/7, to endlessly excoriate two ministers who John McCain speaks of in glowing terms (i.e., John Hagee and Rod Parsley).

And for those who believe that last statement, let me know. I’m sure there’s someone who’d love to sell you some swampland in Myanmar.

It’s funny when these political spin whores like Smercomish try to paint someone else their color!

  43. Badger Says:

The Commercial Media is filling the airwaves with inconsequential stories like the Smercomish comments, and ignoring the elephant in the room….namely what is happening to the Republican Party.

    From Danps diary: http://dailykos.com/ storyonly/ 2008/ 5/ 10/ 5104/ 76448/ 495/ 513108

Considering how much attention mass media has spent on electoral politics it has missed the elephant in the room (pardon the pun): The extreme peril of the Republican Party.

“Republicans held all the levers of power in Washington for six years. They turned budget surpluses into huge deficits, which put pressure on the dollar. The financial industry’s house of cards got blown down and the Federal Reserve cut rates to head off a recession. That put even more pressure on the dollar. Its value sank against other currencies, and investors have taken refuge in commodities, driving those prices up. Republicans’ aggressive, swaggering foreign policy has shot uncertainty through the market, driving (dollar denominated) oil to record highs. Simply put, their policies have put us in a position where we can’t deficit spend, can’t lower prices, can’t cut rates and can’t do much to restore value to our currency. Even simpler, every time you fill up your tank or buy a loaf of bread you pay the BUSH TAX.”

Danps nails it…but you aren’t likely to hear it from the Pundits.

  44. nycbassist Says:

Note that now that the story is out there, these idiots are not too shamed to talk about it. I wonder if they were nearly as outraged when Monica gave up the blue dress.

  45. LibertyLover Says:

Everything is about sex and hookers for the right wing.

  46. Guido the Loving OBGYN Says:

This just further drives home the fact McCain didn’t vote for Bush and he repeatedly lies about it.
Presidential candidates are not entitled to dirty secrets. Not anymore.

  47. barfly Says:

Presidential candidates are not entitled to dirty secrets. Not anymore.

I await the media’s dogged pursuit for Cindy’s tax returns. A multi-million dollar fortune is ideal for political mischief, and we must know there are no conflicts of interest. It will be great fun, watching reporters quizzing McCain about why his support for a reduced estate tax would be a huge benefit for his own kids. How much would they save in taxes, if Dad’s tax policies are enacted?

  48. barfly Says:

She was really good on Democracy Now yesterday:

Here’s the problem I have with her: she has consistently shown that she’s an opportunist, with no real moral compass.

She had a conversion to democratic ideology after she divorced her gay republican husband for 25 million bucks - but she was a die-hard republican during the Reagan years. To me, that shows a past willingness to embrace political orthodoxy over demonstrable truth.

  49. barfly Says:

And I find it hard to believe she didn’t know about her gay husband until after he’d fathered two of her children - putting the multimillionaire Huffington on the paternity hook.

If he was so bad she had to divorce him, why did she keep his name?

    Opportunism.

  52. Peter C Says:

He couldn’t refute her story, nor could he deny that McCain was pandering to Hollywood, so instead, he called her a whore.

    Typical Republican behavior these days.

I think this means that McCain should be shown pandering to Hollywood whenever possible. McCain is not the darling of the religious right, and they HATE Hollywood.

  53. Kahoneez Says:

He admits his conflicts of interests, cozying up his belt way buddies , he’s not a journalist , so by default he’s nothing more than a propagandist , PERIOD and he’s not alone , most of cable is exactly like him . So there is really no VALUE in watching this idiot , When he’s not promoting his buddies , he operates as a lapdog , going after the puppet master’s enemies and I certainly wouldn’t call him a pit bull for anybody , having a big mouth doesn’t qualify for any toughness .

You’re the one making an ass of himself with your belittling comments towards people who don’t share your opinions.

Since when are any conservatives respectful of those who don’t share their opinions?
