Right-wing echo chamber promotes doctored and deceptive audio clip of Al Gore.

Earlier this week, the Business & Media Institute (BMI) – a right-wing front group founded by Brent Bozell – spliced and doctored an NPR interview of Al Gore in order to allege that Gore said something which he did not. The organization published a false headline which blared that Gore called the Myanmar cyclone a “consequence” of global warming. Drudge promoted it on his site:

drudge_gore_cyclone-2.PNG

But in the NPR interview, Gore asserted that melting polar ice caps — not cyclones — were a “consequence” of global warming (which is unequivocally due to global warming). BMI inverted Gore’s comments to make it seem like his remarks about the cyclones followed from his remarks about “the consequences of global warming.” Yesterday, Fox News promoted the doctored clip to make the same false allegations about what Gore actually said. The Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson, who broke the story, has the full details here.

There is a human disposition toward comfort; this extends to "information" - tell me what I want to hear, even if you make it out of whole cloth (see Bill O'Reilly, Paris Business Review). Normally, this tendency abates, with bedwetting, early in childhood. The Wurlitzer consumer is apparently suffering from severe arrested development.

...and this kinda crap journalism is supposedly different from CNN's, ABC's, MSNBC's, CBS's, FOX's march to war/pro bush policy merry-go-round, or MSNBC's court fight to bar Kucinich from the debates, or ABC lying about 9-11 in their "Path to 9-11" or the NYT sitting on timely stories to influence the elections how?

Drudge is just more obvious, but no less pwned & pravda'd, like Blitzer, Mitchell, Gregory and the rest of the paid-whore newsmanakins.

  3. Mickey Says:

And anyway, it couldn't be global warming, because we already know that cyclones and hurricanes are caused by parading homosexuals. Don't worry. McCain's friend Reverend Hegee will set us all straight...

I'm surprised they used as many words of Gore's interview as they did. In today's soundbite journalism world, any quote over five words is verbose and elitist.

This is the typical Big Lie tactics of the neo-fascist Republican elite. We saw with the Swiftboating of Kerry, the run up to the war and numerous other instances where the conservative and elitist agenda has been advanced through such tactics. What are we willing to do to stop these tactics? Is it not time to treat this as seriously as the same threat which the Nazi's and Brown Shirts posed to Germany? The inevitable path has been towards a one party stae controlled by an elite of wealthy corporatists with the masses controlled through fear.

You can say that we could not follow the same path as did Germany prior to WWII. However, you would be wrong. We have already seen extreme nationalism used to justify the Iraq War as opposed to finishing off AQ. You have seen irrational fear used to justify extreme concentration of surveillance powers in the President of the United States in direct contravention to the constitution and federal law. You have seen sweeping police powers given to the President to fight terrorism even to the extent of claiming the authority to declare US citizens as enemy combatants and confining them indefinitely. Even the Supreme Court (with its radical Republican appointed justices) confirmed that the President could hold a citizen incognito for some period of time for interrogation. We have seen laws against terrorism enacted that would not just fight radical Islam but also environmentalists and potentially others dissenting against the government. We have seen free expression shunted to barricaded "free speech" zones out of the site and notice of the public.

We must strike back at the neo-fascist control of the press and agenda setting. It is time to use whatever means possible to punish the purveyors of the big lie. It is time to consider using any tactic to end the careers and the businesses of those engaging in such propaganda.

Hurricane Katrina offered "a taste" of the disasters, and the response to them, that the US could expect as a consequence of climate change, former vice president Al Gore said on Saturday.

He cited recent research that found warmer sea surface temperatures - a result of global warming - had strengthened hurricanes and major storms around the world. Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, where climate change was one of the key issues under discussion, he also criticised those politicians he said wanted to trim government too far, as weak government was incapable of responding adequately to emergencies.

He said: "Katrina is the first sip, the first taste, of a bitter cup that will be proffered to us over and over again. It is up to us [to tackle climate change], and it does involve accepting that there is a legitimate role for government."

  19. Xisithrus Says:

Copano, the real issue with Katrina was and is the failure of the Bush Administration to act not what Al Gore said.

  20. Xisithrus Says:

Um, Picking Cotton, a meteorolgist is a weatherman, not a atmospheric physicist.

  21. jb Says:

Next we will be hearing what Al Gore's preacher says. Why are these corporate elites trying so hard to debase the widely accepted existence of Global Climate Change being caused by human activities? These head in the sand types are so greedy they would rather make a short term profit than admit the truth.

  22. Freedom Rebel Says:

Emails need to be sent to Drudge Report complaining about their inaccurate reporting. After that they need to be exposed to Keith O and Rachel Maddow. Send emails about the lies and that Fox and Friends is perputuating the lie from the Drudge Report.

If they keep getting exposed, eventually people will wake up from their complacency and pay attention. They will demand the truth.

Society will have to start making a stand for truth and justice.

  23. Xisithrus Says:

But Dr Gray [[said]], whose annual forecasts of the number of tropical storms and hurricanes are widely publicised, said a natural cycle of ocean water temperatures - related to the amount of salt in ocean water - was responsible for the global warming that he acknowledges has taken place. [This from Cotton Pickin's link]

So, Cotton Pickin, what has led to the increase of salt in the oceans? Fish? Whales? Polar Bears?

  24. Xisithrus Says:

LOL, Dr Gray admits global warming has occured, but doesnt say its from carbon dioxide but salt. Now, let me think for a minute, wouldnt melting of the polar caps reduce the amount of salt [thermohaline conveyor system] in the ocean??

  25. Zooey Says:

Zep! Don't confuse the issue with FACTS!!

    25. pickingcotton Says: Al Gore’s award-winning climate change documentary was littered with nine inconvenient untruths, a judge ruled yesterday

..and yet, from pickingnose's own link:

Despite finding nine significant errors (one example of these "errors" was that the judge claimed claimed that polar bears weren't drowning...oy!) the judge said many of the claims made by the film were fully backed up by the weight of science. He identified “four main scientific hypotheses, each of which is very well supported by research published in respected, peer-reviewed journals and accords with the latest conclusions of the IPCC”.

In particular, he agreed with the main thrust of Mr Gore’s arguments: “That climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (‘greenhouse gases’).”

    Awww...pickingnose's creative editing eats it...

Bush’s legacy: Single-handedly destroying the once superpower, United States of America. What a legacy!

    Actually,
Dinkledoofus' legacy will that he let the country succumb to the overthrow tactics HIS FATHER spearheaded (head of CIA, and VP under Ronnie Traitor RAYGUN) teaching to the tribesmen of Iraq to fend off the invading USSR.

It is HYSTERICAL that it all happened within the same family. There is no more eveidence of outright TREASON by EVERYONE in the bush family. They trained the Mujahdeen, and fed them weapons and power to fend off the USSR. The USSR continued to fund the invasion at all costs, causing their ultimate demise, and dinkledoofuss has taken us right into the same trap. In fact, I bet it will be found that we funded Saddamm between 1992 "War" and 2003 invasion, and they WANTED to overthrown THIS country. They knew of what they have left behind in Iraq, hence they figured they would find the WMD they planted, but the Iraqis/Saddam beat them at their own game and have either stowed the weapons elsewhere or sold them.
The bush cabal has concieved, oriented, planned,, acted upon, and perfomed an overthrow of the United States of America. It all started with the Hardon Prescott bush had for the Government after it brought charges against him and his company for trading with the ENEMY (Nazis) during WWII.
They HATED this country ever since, and it was drummed into their heads that the country had to be taken over.
Just look at the history and the current happenings.

Arrest, Try and Hang them all.

  31. Gregor Samsa Says:

What a moron is this pickingcotton character.

So now the courts are qualified to rule on scientific matters? And their rulings carry the same weight as scientific consensus?

This is worse than bringing up Crichton's book.

  32. Gregor Samsa Says:

As for the Drudge Report and Fox News, this is the media free from the "liberal bias": Free from the facts, free from ethics, and free from responsible reporting to their audience.

  33. Alecto Says:

    Gregor,
20 lashes with a wet noodle for bringin up Faux Snooze in the same paragraph as "responsible reporting to their audience"

Faux Snooze WENT to the ACTIVIST judges to get them to RE-WRITE the rules of Journalism. Pssst, hey journalists, Journalism no longer has to be truthful, Thank Faux Snooze.

  34. MapleStreet Says:

The funny thing is that the cyclone and its location could be a consequence of global warming. For sure, increased storm activity and shifting of weather patterns are part of the scenario. We just don't know how much of that particular cyclone is connected.

Ah, well, at Troll Central I guess what they lack in brains, they make up in tenacity.

  36. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Ever notice how the Climate Change Deniers have, like, three Foxperts that they quote over and over? I think only one of their Foxperts is even a climate scientist. The others are TV weathermen and econ professors.

  37. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Pickingcotton,

What are your thoughts on the fact that the links you provided don't quite support your opinion that global warming is not happening?

And how about linking to a source of serious scientific information on the subject of global climate change, like -oh, I don't know- the IPCC? Or Real Climate, if you must link to a blog?

On second thought, perhaps your misunderstanding is more fundamental, so here is a link for you.

  38. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Trollie thinks he can drop some delusional stink-bombs at the end of the thread and pretend that he got the last word.

Maybe he'd have more credibility if he'd stuck around to defend the last batch of feces he flung at the wall.

Nope, won't happen. Just hit-and-run trolling when everyone else is eating dinner with their families, that's all our trolls are capable of.

I guess when you've got nothing but crap to throw at the wall, you wanna do it when no one's around to call you on it, right, Trajan?

  39. Gregor Samsa Says:

    One more thing Pickingcotton,

Instead of obsessing over what Al Gore says or not on the subject, perhaps yo should spend more time reading the conclusions of the IPCC on global climate change.

(I realise this will be a tab difficult for you to fathom, but should Gore drop dead right this instant, temperatures on our planet would still rise.)

  40. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Apparently, there would be no ethanol if it weren't for Al Gore. Al Gore dragged the farm lobby and all the Senators and Congresspeople from Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana, all of the corn-=rpoducing states, dragged them kicking and screaming to support ethanol production aganst their will.

    He's diabolical, I tell you. DYE-A-BOLICAL.

  41. Gregor Samsa Says:

Perhaps the troll thinks he can "win" by the sheer amount of posts with random links to random anti-Gore web sites.

I am sure he also believes he can change reality if he closes his eyes very hard and says "this ain't happenin'!" out loud over and over and over...

  42. Gregor Samsa Says:

I hope Big Oil is not paying this troll too much per post.

I mean, the World Net Daily?

Yeah, there is a sound source of information for you (on any topic whatsoever).

  43. Gregor Samsa Says:

Not to mention that reliance on Ethanol has also been criticised by the scientific community because it doesn't address the root cause of the current global climate change, to wit, greenhouse gas emissions.

Nice try troll, but if you wanted to engage in a battle of the wits, you should have come armed.

The average temperature in April 2008 was 51.0 F. This was -1.0 F cooler than the 1901-2000 (20th century) average, the 29th coolest April in 114 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

2.39 inches of precipitation fell in April. This was -0.04 inches less than the 1901-2000 average, the 54th driest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.01 inches per decade.

  45. Gregor Samsa Says:

Ah, yes, yet another global denier who doesn't understand that Global in Global Climate Change means the whole world.

From the National Climatic Data Center's website:

    * Based on preliminary data, the globally averaged combined land and sea surface temperature was the second warmest on record for March and the January-March year-to-date period ranked eleventh warmest.
    * March 2008 temperatures were above average in Europe, Asia, northern Africa, central and southern Australia, parts of the southern states of the contiguous U.S, southern Alaska, and parts of South America.

Climate of 2008 - March in Historical Perspective

Or how about this other tidbit, from the same website:
    2. Are greenhouse gases increasing?
Human activity has been increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (mostly carbon dioxide from combustion of coal, oil, and gas; plus a few other trace gases). There is no scientific debate on this point.

Global Warming - Frequently Asked Questions

It must be tough for the deniers to realise their "proof" disproves the very same points they are trying to make.

But, hey, thanks for the link.
