McCain on whether he’s still comfortable with Hagee’s endorsement: ‘I’ve accepted his endorsement.’

Earlier today, controversial pastor John Hagee issued an apology to the Catholic church for inflammatory comments he made in the past. But as ThinkProgress noted, Hagee has yet to apologize to other groups he has denigrated, such as the LGBT community. Asked today if he was still comfortable with Hagee’s endorsement, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) deflected the question, saying he merely “accepted” Hagee’s support and doesn’t embrace everything he says:

Look, as I’ve said many times I’ve accepted his endorsement. I didn’t endorse everything that he said. The point is that the fact that he has made an apology I think is very helpful.

But McCain didn’t just “accept” Hagee’s endorsement; he actively sought it. In fact, he “personally wooed Hagee for more than a year.” Hagee recently told the New York Times Magazine that “it’s true that McCain’s campaign sought my endorsement.”

that may be so, but be that as it may, how does Hagee feel about gay catholics?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    snicker

  2. LeftWind says:

Was that apology a result of waterboarding?

Grampy McSame says – My friends, back in the day we would have Hagee for dinner once a week, my uncle from Scotland had a great recipe for Hagee and deep fried kittens, Fritters and Hagee made me gay, we were all gay back then, why we would go to the gayest parade and they had ballons, big red ones, we would throw bits of Hagee at the feet of the band as they marched…I hope that is beef stew I just sat in.

Right Grampy, your bigot Hagee said he is sorry for political reasons only, it did not change his thinking one bit.

  4. Marie says:

To apply the same standards, McCain should denounce, renounce and reject Hagee, the man and his words.
It’s one thing to attend a church where the pastor can get hot-headed in his sermons, it is another thing to actively seek out the bigoted fanatical lunatic to be part of your campaign.
Hagee has offended catholics, gays, blacks, and women in his sermons and statements, yet, McCain not only embraces the man, he asked him to join his campaign.

Does a candidate have to agree with 100% of the views of every person from whom he merely seeks and accepts an endorsement? That seems like a nearly impossible standard.

I believe that is the entire point in seeking, and then accepting the endorsement. The candidate seeks out those endorsements which will highlight a certain aspect of the candidates platform – hopefully in a positive way. If McSame actively sought Hagee’s endorsement, then yes, he is locked at the hip with Hagee. Otherwise, why would McSame seek the endorsement of someone who is as unstable as Hagee?

  6. McWars says:

Hillary has the endorsement of hard working whites and she will win WV big tonight and her campaign will pick up extreme steam and the superdelegates will become so impressed with that win that Obama will lose 200 of his superdelegates and be written off and Hillary will ride into the convention to clinch the nomination and those hard working whites will return to vote for her in the fall against McCain in what will be a 1992 style campaign?

Am I finished telling Hillary what she wants to hear?

  7. McWars says:

I forgot to ask, is RHF a hard-working white?

    Birds of a feather.

It just doesn’t affect the MSM like a loud black preacher who scares little stupid white people.

Remember, it’s more about getting elected than having morals.

Yet it is this same “agree with 100% of the views” standard that the Right seeks to apply to Obama’s relationship with the Rev. Wright. Odd.

You know what else is odd? That there are 20 different posters on TP who have chosen the handle “anymouse”.

Or maybe it’s the same poster who’s already been banned 19 times under that moniker.

  11. TXProgressive says:

If the gop wants to play the guilt by association game as they obviously do, just hang Hagee around McCan’t’s neck, right alongside old GWB. There’s an obvious double standard where the religion issue and the candidates are concerned, that much is obvious. I find it disgusting – and I find people like Hagee that claim to be christian yet prove daily that they are not equally nauseating. How does anyone with 2 live brain cells follow this vile human being?

Amazing, isn’t it? Why do trolls always want to be where they’re really not welcome?

I miss Good_Golly. I dream of it no longer able to post on our “watch” site, with the creator quitting to spend more time with its Latin kings, and opting to resurrect right here, at Thinkprogress.

    Wait a minute…

What’s interesting is that anymouse wants to set the standard for others, but then not to abide by it herself.

This makes anylouse a true right-winger.

Oh, and the straw man arguments are another dead giveaway.

    Crap. What an unholy hypocrite!!

  16. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

This endorsement will make absolutely no difference in whether or not catholics vote for McGruber because they will anyway. The mere fact that the GOP does the things they do in the name of god is an offense to all church goers and that still doesn’t stop them for voting republican.

  17. Leftside Annie says:

I heard a comment last night (on Countdown, I believe, from Bill Moyers) that Rev. Wright has preached over 200,000 minutes worth of sermons over the last 36 years in the pulpit – and yet, he is condemned as a scary black nutter for what he said in only 3 or 4 of those 200,000 minutes…

How about we apply that same standard to the numerous batshit crazy WHITE preachers shouting condemnations of America from their megachurch pulpits – and on the teevee – every freakin’ Sunday?

  18. nanlichi says:

Buckie Boy, you are really good at that! Thanks for the laugh.

  19. StratRat says:

Probably because his church is reported to have 19,000 + live members, is carried on 160 TV Stations, 50 radio stations, 8 networks and his evangelical Christian membership usually votes Republican.

What you just did, dear boy, was identify the dead end last gasp 27%r’s who believe 4 more years of the same train wreck is a good thing for America. Bragging about how much bigotry he can spew to his low information, rapture bound members is NOT something I would bring up.

Frankly, your points are old and worn. If you want to vote for someone who embraces a bigot, then fine. No problem. Just keep your mouth shut when it comes to Obama and his faith. This nation has HUGE issues which do not get debated when we waste time talking with an idiot like yourself. Cheers.

They are a pair aren’t they, certainly they deserve one another and McCain wanted his support badly, he got it and hopefully everyone will remember election day………………..Hagee certainly sticks by what he has said about Katrina striking our area because of homosexual activity, which he would come and visit southwest Mississippi, and the coastal area, I do believe that his opinion would change rather quickly.

How about the gays John “Scumbag” McLame? How about all the comments from the other shithead JesusMongers that are endorsing your pandering dumb ass!!!! You suck to the very core of your very being!!!!!! Rot in hell!!!

  24. Chocolate Jesus says:

Keep hitting McLame with this guy.. my gut tells me there is much more dirt out there on him as well…if you can bring up enough dirt that MCCain is forced to denounced him, the right wing screwballs will eat mccain alive….

ps. yes Anonynmous Goon Golly, if you actively seek someones endorsement it means you are effectively giving your blessing to their views and opinions…if those views are consistently radical, you’re going to get in trouble, especially if you sought the guy out for an endorsement. I laugh when you try to minimize the things Hagee has very radical views about…these arent minor policy decisions, this is the a guy who thinks we should kickstart armageddon with a few nukes, to you know, speed the stuff in the bible along. and hes so nutty he thinks even other sects of christianity are false..introlerance even toward those of your own religion is a defining mark of a fanatic..

    More than a fanatic…a lunatic…a simpleton…a racist…a jebus mongerer…a dream catcher…a boy toucher…a crook…a liar…a useless citizen in this modern world!!!!!

    AND A REPUGNISCUM!!!!

  26. sectionop92 says:

I’d like to invite Hagee to celebrate mass and see how many members of the church “turn the other cheek” or would that be “slap those fat cheeks on his mongoloid head” when they see him. Then take him up to get the body of Christ…all he can eat, even when he can eat no more! While we get the “blood bong” so he can taste the liquid refreshment of the lord’s goodness…something he knows nothing about, given that the lord he praises is the goat in his bedroom. He’ll feel the Catholics in a way no school child has since they took the Inquisition tools away from the Nuns.

BTW…I don’t go to church, I just wanted to rant. I am Catholic, but more Agnostic. It is hard to explain.
