Since Washington University in St. Louis announced it would honor anti-feminist activist Phyllis Schlafly with an honorary degree at Friday’s commencement, protest has been swift. Yesterday, 14 law school faculty members wrote to the university chancellor asking that he rescind the degree; a similar petition has 240 faculty signatures. Schlafly, however, is unrepetant, yesterday calling the protestors “a bunch of bitter women“:
“They are a bunch of bitter women,” she said of her detractors. “It was 25 years ago that we buried the Equal Rights Amendment and they are still whining about it.”
Her suggestion to them?
“Get a life. Move on. Try to do something with your life.” [...]
“If they make a scene, they just make themselves look ridiculous,” Schlafly said. “It doesn’t bother me. I’m not going to let a bunch of tacky women ruin my day.”
Write a (polite) e-mail to Washington University Chancellor Mark Wrighton here to object to the Schlafly award.
Gee, she doesn’t believe in equal rights, but she will accept an honorary degree she didn’t earn.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:34 amHypocrites, I’m so friggin tired of them.
take care
tony and guidedog Lido
“Bitter?” “Whining?” “Ridiculous?” “Tacky?”
Put down the mirror, Schlafly.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:35 amLindsay Beyerstein did a solid post on this the other day at her blog Majikthise
May 14th, 2008 at 10:36 amI have no desire to be polite about this, so I’ll vent here and write my civil objection to Wrighton thereafter.
Schlafly is either an ignoramus or a hypocrite of the first water; I’ll err on the side of both. She complains of women occupying positions of public influence, and yet wields it herself. She insists that women remain domestic paragons, and yet she violates her own expectations. “Tacky women?” You’re a jackass, Schlafly, and your willingness to exploit the very opportunities that you would deny every other American women makes you a fraud and a blight on democracy.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:37 amPhyllis — these people (and I’d bet they aren’t all women) weren’t addressing you with their letters and petitions. They were addressing the university chancellor.
You are tacky, irrelevant, and not worth anyone’s attention. However, these faculty members DO care about the university and its image.
So STFU.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:38 am“Get a life. Move on. Try to do something with your life.” […]
Standard cheap insult. Signifies nothing. Means nothing. Pure robospeak.
Retire from public life and stop pretending to be relevant, dirt. That’s where these “bitter” women are taking issue, your irrelevance.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:39 amProjection, much, Phallis?
May 14th, 2008 at 10:40 amMiss Molly just pwned Mrs. pastime Schlafly.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:42 amSyphyllis Schlafly is a virus on modern progress. She’s all stuck in the 50s.
Go write a letter to President Eisenhower about that “bitterness,” Schlafly. In your mind, I’m sure you’ll get a response.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:45 amWell, Miss Molly said everything I wanted to say, and more.
Oops, one more…f_ck off Phyllis, you stale old gas bag.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:45 amI’ve changed my mind. Schlafly SHOULD get an honorary degree from the university and I suggest that it be a B.S. in Women’s Studies.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:47 amSince the letter from the faculty was not exclusively women, it seems to me that Shlafly (calling the protesters ‘bitter women’) already has a canned response to people who protest her, not realizing that men have just as much right to be offended, disgusted and appalled that a major university would tacitly support what she promotes.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:48 amSchafly: “Get a life. Move on. Try to do something with your life.”
– - Isn’t that what modern women are trying to do yet Schlafly wants to tether them to the kitchen.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:53 amI’d heard HP was scoutin’ her for CEO.

Did you mean to post it somewhere else? It would make a good discussion topic for another thread.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:04 amMs. Schlafly asserts women “are too emotional to handle intellectual or scientific debate…” And yet there she is out there trying to handle intellectual debate. Would there be any women at Washington University if they couldn’t “handle intellectual or scientific debate?”
May 14th, 2008 at 11:06 amDoes Ms Schiafly understand that without modern feminism she would not be able to vote or even, in an ironic twist, recieve recognition from a university. She seems two seems to be two tickets short of a raffle this one.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:11 amI’m so proud that my daughter, who is five, can hold an intelligent debate on whether she needs her hair washed in her evening bath. “I didn’t play in the dirt, Daddy”!.
So Phyllis, you’ve been punked by a five year old.

If ever you feel the need to blow beverages out of your nose, I can recommend going there and using the random search button.
It’s very quick to use as many articles are about as long as the average snarky comment here at TP.
Here’s a small example of the heights of Conservapedia’s intellectualism and authority ( measured in millimeters I think):
The 19th Century:
“The 19th century was the time period between 1800 and 1901. It was a busy time, because lots of things were going on at once. ”
“…Other major powers included France, which controlled most of North Africa and part of Canada and Asia; Belgium, whose territories included much of Central Africa, Asia, South America, and New Zealand”
Amazing, huh?

Is this the same “Conservapedia” where “homosexuality” is looked up far more than any other topic? To the point where I’m convinced the entire site is set up to give homophobes justification for their viewpoints?
Since Andrew has a gay brother that he’s probably trying to disavow, this now makes sense.
BTW — I thought that bit about New Zealand being a Belgian colony was hilarious. Not to mention all the Belgian influence in South America.

May 14th, 2008 at 11:56 amCheck your brain at the door, you dizzy broad.
Submit to your husband. Forget your feelings. The marriage contract says he can do what he wants with you. Any time. If you aren’t in the mood for sex, close your eyes and think pleasant thoughts. Grin and bear it. If it helps his ego, fake your orgasm before he’s finished in his 30 seconds on top. Take one for the team.
Give up any goals of being anything but a vessel for reproduction.
Channel the 1950s.
If you have a career, pull up the ladder that got you there so that no others can better themselves.

LOL, thank you for sharing that. It brought back a great memory of my daughter when she was that age. Except it was with her sand box and the pound of sand in her hair.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:57 amHow come Phyllis can call people “bitter” and get away with it?
May 14th, 2008 at 11:59 amHell yes I’m bitter, you heinous, cloying old whore! I am bitter that women like her have cut the legs from under my generation. She can not shuffle off this mortal coil fast enough for this bitter feminist. I have my red dress picked out for her funeral.
May 14th, 2008 at 12:15 pmIn 1992, her eldest son, John, came out as homosexual. Schlafly has declined to comment on the matter in interviews.
“Get a life. Move on. Try to do something with your life.”
Words to live by , eh you stupid old bat ?

May 14th, 2008 at 12:32 pmSomeone please explain to me why would a university give an honorary degree anyway? And what kind of standards would allow a cavewoman like Schafly to get one?
May 14th, 2008 at 12:48 pmon 5th estate’s advice, I decided to do random searches on Conservapedia…man oh man, did I find funny sh1t. Like this page…it’s not even an article, it’s just a bunch of unabashed right-wing propaganda…and at the top of the article, the note about citations is just too funny. It contains NO citations, which I would consider inadequate haha.

Liberal Myths are heavily promoted falsehoods motivated by a liberal belief system. They include:
The claim that the population has increased by a large amount, and human beings are beginning to overpopulate. (This myth is an attempt to justify abortions)
The claim that people today are more knowledgeable than in prior centuries.
The claim that the Bush tax cuts substantially reduced 2006 revenues and expanded the budget deficit.
The claim that the Bush tax cuts have not helped the economy.
Anthropogenic Global Warming.[1]
The claim that a fetus is not a living human being.
The claim that gun control reduces crime.
The claim that abortion and breast cancer are unrelated.

Hey, at least they admitted that friendship, logic, and style are all liberal characteristics which by opposition means that being a friendless loser, stupidity, and lack of style are conservative traits! Sounds about right to me.
May 14th, 2008 at 12:52 pmI think Phyllis may be due for a good old fashioned egging at that speech.

May 14th, 2008 at 1:00 pmThey also refer to Mr. Fred “God Hates Fags” Phelps as a “liberal activist.” Hilarious.

A conservative supremacist is one who acts as if he is intellectually superior to others because he believes in the conservative ideology.
Often people are surprised to learn when a conservative supremacist actually has relatively weak intellectual achievements.[Citation Needed]

Why can’t Schflay live upto to her own position and shut up and get to a kitchen…?
.
May 14th, 2008 at 1:29 pmWasn’t Schafly the one who said women should meet their ‘man’ at the door wearing nothing but Saran Wrap? Red Pill had it spot on…denying women the same advantages she herself enjoys…she isn’t in the kitchen, she isn’t being the dutiful little wife to Mr. Schafly, she’s a corporate whore still raking in the dough with her throwback philosophies. I thought she was irrelevant 25 years ago. Now I’m sure.
May 14th, 2008 at 1:55 pmAs a graduate of the law school at WashU, I did indeed write a polite e-mail to the Chancellor. Still waiting for a response. Interesting that my checkbook will remain closed for the foreseeable future until I receive a persuasive response from the good Chancellor and/or the Schalfly mockery is shelved.

C’mon. Women are much better at multitasking than men. During that 30 seconds on top, some women are making the shopping list. :)

May 14th, 2008 at 4:35 pmEven the ignorants have their day, its just Ms Shlafly’s turn. Rather than accepting with class, she obviously needs to discount her gender further. Isn’t that what she is being awarded this “honor” for having done lo these many years? This is Washington University’s pick for an honorary degree? Talk about low hanging fruit; you can’t squeeze juice from rotted apples once they have been laying in the dirt this long. I remember when a degree from this university meant something.
