On MSNBC’s Hardball tonight, right-wing radio host Kevin James attempted to defend President Bush’s comments comparing Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) to Nazi appeasers because he favors talking with our enemies. James compared Obama to Neville Chamberlain, about whom James could only cry: “He’s an appeaser!”
Matthews pressed James at least 19 times over five minutes to simply explain what Chamberlain had done in 1938 and 1939 to make him an “appeaser.” James could only shout his talking point over and over, prompting Matthews to threaten to end the interview:
MATTHEWS: You don’t know what you’re talking about, Kevin. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Tell me what Chamberlain did wrong.
JAMES: Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, Chris. Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, all right? […]
MATTHEWS: I’ve been sitting here five minutes asking you to say what the president was referring to in 1938 at Munich.
JAMES: I don’t know.
MATTHEWS: You don’t know, thank you.
Watch it:
Matthews was trying to prompt James to explain that Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler in 1938, which allowed Hitler to occupy part of Czechoslovakia in exchange for peace with Britain.
Matthews rebuked his clueless guest — and the entire Bush administration — for being “blank slates in terms of history”:
You don’t understand there’s a difference between talking to the enemy and appeasing. What Chamberlain did wrong, most people would say, is not talking to Hitler, but giving him half of Czechoslovakia in 1938. That’s what he did wrong. Not talking to somebody. Appeasement is giving away things to the enemy.
Matthews’s other guest, Mark Green, advised James: “When you’re in a hole, stop digging.”
See what happens when a rightie talking head only gets the talking points but not anything to explain it. Might be why the rusher’s audience are called “ditto-heads” and have a double digit IQ.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:26 pmOh man, that was just pathic wasn’t it?
May 15th, 2008 at 6:28 pmGood grief. What an idiot. Good for Tweety. ;o)
May 15th, 2008 at 6:29 pmTweety should have asked him about the Bay of Pigs, as well.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:30 pmJAMES: Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, Chris. Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, all right? […]
MATTHEWS: I’ve been sitting here five minutes asking you to say what the president was referring to in 1938 at Munich.
JAMES: I don’t know.
Nothing like being exposed to a Chimpy leg humping stooge , who simply parrots what the most dim-witted , dishonest , incompetent president in US history spews , to make dropping battery acid seem like not such a bad idea………
May 15th, 2008 at 6:30 pmThis is exactly what I have been referring to the lies and ignorance of the Republicans. They throw out slogans that impugn the character, patriotism and dedication of Democrats without any knowledge as to what those slogans mean (in the best case) or deliberately misrepresenting the application of those slogans to the Democratic candidate under attack.
Tweety needed to follow up with:
1. Munich was not about talking with a fascist leader. It was about the British and French giving Hitler a carte blanc to invade and occupy part of another country in return for a promise of peace. No one has suggested that any of the candidates are backing such a plan.
2. Do you really want to make this comparison now knowing what appeasement means when it was a Republican who sold Iran weapons in exchange for weapons to support its operations in South America? When it was Republican presidents who gave Saddam intelligence and WMD precursors to remain in power?
May 15th, 2008 at 6:31 pmWell done Mr. Matthews! You showed what a complete doofus Kevin James is.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:32 pmI might have to (reluctantly) revise my opinion of Tweety. Maybe he should be known henceforth as MR. Tweety.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:36 pmMatthews rebuked his clueless guest — and the entire Bush administration — for being “blank slates in terms of history”:
Ummm , what can anyone expect from those whose party does nothing other than constantly evoke their own revisionist history ?
May 15th, 2008 at 6:38 pmClassic Tweety. The dim bulb I guess thought if he yelled appeaser loudly and often enough he would get a pass. Maybe on Fox but not when Tweety smells ignorance. Tweety is ruthless when he smells ignorance, like a shark to blood. Bravo. The sad thing is, the dim bulb has not clue he just got the equivalent of his tightie whities pulled down around his ankles for the world to see his tiny endowment. Too funny.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:38 pmClean slate Republicans.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:40 pm“…and the entire Bush administration — for being “blank slates in terms of history…”
Change to read “…and the entire Bush administration IS a blank slate in terms of history…”
May 15th, 2008 at 6:46 pmRight-wing radio host Kevin James
Obviously , a remedial grasp of history is not a necessity in having a radio show , right-wing style………
May 15th, 2008 at 6:46 pmWow, is that idiot one of our trolls?
That is what’s wrong with Reichwing idiots, they don’t know jack shit and they think they do. It’s like showing a monkey how to do something so they will repeat it. They don’t know that they are just repeating it or why.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:55 pmI was wondering how the “Press” would react to this UNPRECIDENTED Fallacious Political Attack from beyond the US Border.
In the past, the news media would have not done their homework and followed thru like Mr. Matthews has apparently done.
The Blogs, the Internet, and U Tube have changed the game. Sen. McCain and the Republican attack machine had better get their “Facts” straight.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:55 pmWe appeased the Jews when we gave them Palestine.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:55 pmWow. I can’t go back to hating Matthews for at least a week, now. That was really pretty brilliant of him.
May 15th, 2008 at 6:56 pmKevin James = PURE MORON KOOL-AID GUZZLER!!!!

May 15th, 2008 at 7:00 pmdamn… just when i was so sure of my hate of Chris Mathews and his jackassy-ness… he goes and shows he actually has a brain. He does this ever so often and it just leaves me dizzy.
in the words of Colbert… Pick a side!! we’re at war!!
May 15th, 2008 at 7:04 pmps… I love how his voice keeps getting higher and higher as he tries to salvage his reputation…
CLASSIC
May 15th, 2008 at 7:07 pmI can’t believe a Matthews video is now going to be ranked up there as one of my top 5 all time favourites. My hat’s off to you this time Mr. Matthews.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:07 pmWell props to tweety for now. But we’re still watching Chris. You are to Keith. Better stay on your toes.

May 15th, 2008 at 7:13 pmBush’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, helped to create the Nazi war machine and supported Hitler’s blossoming evil regime:
“Under the Trading with the Enemy Act, the government took over the Union Banking Corporation, in which Bush was a director. The U.S. Alien Property Custodian seized Union Banking Corp.’s stock shares, all of which were owned by Prescott Bush, E. Roland “ Bunny ” Harriman, three Nazi executives, and two other associates of Bush.”
“President Bush’s family had already played a central role in financing and arming Adolf Hitler for his takeover of Germany; in financing and managing the buildup of Nazi war industries for the conquest of Europe and war against the U.S.A.”
“The President’s family fortune was largely a result of the Hitler project.”
“It was not inevitable that millions would be slaughtered under fascism and in World War II. At certain moments of crisis, crucial pro-Nazi decisions were made outside of Germany. These decisions for pro-Nazi actions were more aggressive than the mere “ APPEASEMENT ” which Anglo-American historians later preferred to discuss.”
Bush’s family HELPED the Nazi’s, let alone appeased them. What does Bush have to say about that? Why isn’t the MSM calling him out on this?!?

May 15th, 2008 at 7:16 pmDamm it all to he1l when I want to hate Tweety and he does something like this. Yes, this was priceless.
But I think Mr. Matthews fears for his ratings. He sees the Olbermann writing (ratings) on the wall.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:22 pmThe look on Mark Green’s face, he was the other guest, was priceless.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:23 pmJMOHR,
You wrote: This is exactly what I have been referring to the lies and ignorance of the Republicans. How is it any different than Barack Obama criticizing the Bush administration for using all of the rab translators in Iraq leaving none for Afghansitan? When they do not speak Arab in Afghhansitan. I am not picking a fight, I just think that it is very easy for people to pick apart everything someone does or says - just because we don’t agree with them.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:26 pmWow…I may have to stay up and watch the 3am rebroadcast of this.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:26 pmJames apparently took the same world history class as Dana Pinochio. Doesn’t know jack-shit about anything, but is a willing spokesman for whoever pays him the most.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:26 pmYea, Green is a lawyer and one smart dude. If he actually would have debated James, there would be nothing but a grease spot left in the rightie idjit’s chair.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:27 pmYou’d think that James would have done research before going on the show! That is embraassing for him.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:28 pmSure indymoans, Hitler = Translators. You’re off topic and going to get flagged.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:28 pmThat made my day. I laughed my ass off. If you’re going to try to beat people over the head with historical comparisons, you better know your history. Kevin James makes a living as some kind of sock puppet of the regional variety?
We’ve got a couple of those here in Oregon. They talk (and write) like they’re whacking off to Cheney’s picture at the same time
May 15th, 2008 at 7:29 pmShayne,
That is not off-topic at all. I was drawing a parallel between two incidences that are very similar.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:29 pmMan, Matthews owned James’ ass and his tactic of “If you don’t know what you’re talking about, talk louder”.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:29 pmTweety’s got balls. Finally.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:32 pmHe’s my new hero.
What is even more incredible is this moron will be back on the airwaves tomorrow and his leg-humping listeners will be hanging on his every word.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:35 pmTypical Right wing nuts argument. They think by screaming and shouting loudly they can win that argument.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:38 pmI have heard a lot of them…They will not pass the easiest test about the Middle East.
They talk as if they know it all about that part of the world.
All what this guy Kevin James has to know is few words..Hamas,Alqaeda,terrorism..Islam, they hate us, BINGO..and he is ready to go on the radio and act as an authority.
He did not know what Chamberlain did,or said…yet he kept repeating the name to support his argument but with no knowledge.
We have a big problem in America today…we want to lead the world..but our people know little about this world we want to lead.
If the majority are educated or have sufficient knowledge about the world, there will be no room for people like Kevin James ,Limbuagh, colter, Hannity and many like them.
But alas..!!
DIXIECrats.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:38 pmThat was perfect.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:40 pmReminds me of Anne Coulter’s famous history lesson on Canadian Troops in Vietnam:
Or Press Secretary Dana Perino’s famous history lesson on the Cuban Missile Crisis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYSi0BDdjjo
I’ve always wondered why none of the talking heads ever point out the irony of bush, the *history* major at yale, making idiotic statements such as those today about appeasement.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:42 pmOne idiot gets the best of another - seems to have happened a lot during the last 7 1/2 years.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:42 pmI am the type of guy who can forgive someone for misspeaking as well as they are well-intnetioned. However, in james’ case, he wwas criticizing someone else, which makes it hard for me to feel sorry for him.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:45 pmindyjones Says:
How is it any different than Barack Obama criticizing the Bush administration for using all of the rab translators in Iraq leaving none for Afghansitan? When they do not speak Arab in Afghhansitan.
Afghanistan people don’t speak Arab. Al-Qaeda fighters (you know, Osama and friends) speak Arab and have been hiding in or near Afghanistan. So, when someone intercepts an Al-Qaeda call or something, in Afghanistan, they’re very probably gonna be speaking Arab. Therefore, translators that speak Arab are needed in Afghanistan.
It then follows that Obama is right.
Therefore, your comparison between James and Obama is wrong.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:48 pmThis guy IS actually an attorney. He’s a member of the California State Bar, an Assistant U.S. attorney for three years and in private practice for 10 years. How anyone graduates from both college and law school without having any historical knowledge is amazing to me!
By the way, I saw this segment and Newsbusters claim is a flat out lie.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:48 pmYou should’ve seen it as it was happening. PRICELESS!!
May 15th, 2008 at 7:51 pmMy immediate thought was how quickly it would ge tposted to HuffPost. I was not disapointed.
Luis,
You are correct that some of the fighters may speak arab. However, the premise of your argument is wrong. I highly doubt we are using translators to talk with those captured in battle (I don’t think we are doing much negotiating with them enemies) but this was clearly a misstep on Obama’s part and he threw out the “arab fighter” thing to cover it up.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:53 pmImpeach, since when is truth a requirement of a right wing site? It’s lies.
Check out my blog on Bush et al being charged with war crimes and look at the bottom few comments. Lies, twists, strawmen, etc.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:53 pmindyjones Says:
You’d think that James would have done research before going on the show! That is embraassing for him.
Why would you think that? There are any number of radio “hosts” that don’t let little things like history and details get in the way of their opinions. This guy is a classic. He’s apparently used to bloviating away on his show using whatever buzz words are available, without even knowing what they mean. Chris Matthews could just as easily have asked the question “What does appeasement mean?” and he wouldn’t have had an answer.
It’s pathetic that this idiot is getting paid to offer his opinions on any number of foreign and domestic issues and doesn’t even know what the hell Chamberlain did.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:54 pmgummitch, I agree with you that it is scary that this guy, and alot of uninformed people in general, have too much forum and not enough fact or rationale based on sound reason.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:56 pmI am going to guess that there are, unfortnately, a lot of poeple who do not have a strong overview of history. But thank god we are not telling other people how to think!

You’re as bad as Kevin James. You can’t stop and admit you’re wrong. Al Qaeda is primarily an Arab group and the leader, remember him? He’s from . . . Saudi Arabia. His speeches are in . . . Arabic.
And you are seriously contending that no one interrogates “those captured in battle”? Do we just shoot them out of hand? Because I could swear there has been a lot of discussion about what constitutes appropriate interrogation methods lately, and that would be pretty moot if all they were doing was shooting the captives in the head.
It’s probably time for you to start putting your comments in ALL CAPS, which would be the equivalent of this bozo shouting “appeasement appeasement appeasement!!!”

You’re joking, right? People like Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh have made their entire careers out of telling people what to think. You know, “dittoheads”? That’s all they do, for god’s sake.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:01 pmGummitch, Do you really believe that Obama was referring to the fighters? And, no, I am not as bad as kevin james. I undersatnd what I am talking about and it comes down to whether one believes that we are desperate need of Arabic translators in Afghanistan to translate between our forces and the fighters (I assume the ones we capture). I think it is obvious that Obama issued the statement after the fact to cover up his gaffe. Please, let’s remain civil.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:03 pmO’reilly, yes. Maher, yes. Hannity, yes. Franken, yes. The list goes on and on and is not exclusive only to the right.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:05 pmGummitch, By the way, I was agreeing with you.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:05 pmThis was something to see live. James’ eyes were bugging out and he kept saying “Chris, chris, chris”. Mathews chewed him up and spit him out.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:36 pmKevin James cited ‘Pathway to 9/11′ as a factual document….priceless.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:42 pmDirty Hippy says: “We’ve got a couple of those here in Oregon. They talk (and write) like they’re whacking off to Cheney’s picture at the same time”
This made me laugh. I assume one of your references is to the Lars Larsen creature. Talk about hateful..

Well here’s where we have a different assumption.
You’re talking about captured fighters. We’re talking about spying on Al-Qaeda communications. Two different scenarios, even if they’re both happening in Afghanistan as we speak.

May 15th, 2008 at 9:18 pmThis is on the Verdict with Dan Abrams. Damn funny stuff. “38 or 39 what year do you want” James actually said that.
Damn funny stuff. Where is this hack on the radio?
May 15th, 2008 at 9:27 pmINDYJONES, it’s spamming, false argument trolls like you that send people fleeing this site. Why you are still here I don’t know. But really people have described their issues to you and then you move the goalpost just like the sicko little trollie you are. Nobody cares what you think or what you want to discuss. Why don’t you just STFU.

May 15th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
First of all, the language is called Arabic. Not “Arab.” Arabs are the people, Arabians are the horses, Arabic is the language.
Second of all, al-Qa’ida and the people we’re actually looking for in Afghanistan are most likely going to be speaking in some variety of Modern Standard Arabic as a lingua franca, even if several of them speak Pashto or Urdu or Dari as their first language. Hell, even Arabs don’t all speak the same language - they speak one of five major regional dialects that have radical differences in verb conjugation, vocabulary, and consonant pronunciation.
Third of all, Obama knows that they speak other languages in Afghanistan. He also knows that it was primarily Arabic translators who were fired because they had gay.
May 15th, 2008 at 9:35 pmOf course. Mr. James will spend the next few days making the rounds with Bill0, Hannety, Becky etc. and blather on about how he owned Tweety. And the loyal “folks”(TM) will eat it with a spoon. He’ll be a fricken Reichwing hero.
May 15th, 2008 at 9:36 pmThe conservatives only pay attention to the “headers” in the big picture history books that look appealing and scary, then try to create the talking points off of them like they have a doctorate in the subject. The trouble is they don’t get into the details of a lot of these things and neither do their handlers, since a lot of Americans don’t pay attention in any history classes themselves. So when they “caw” like this, it takes a Chris Matthews moment like this to expose them for the frauds and outright liars that they are.
May 15th, 2008 at 9:53 pmHussein, Everything you say is true with one excpetion - whether or not Obama knew that when he spoke the other day. I claim he did not.
May 15th, 2008 at 9:59 pmShayne,
You are beginning to annoy me. In a way, you kind of remind me of Ike Clanton in the Tombstone movie. That aside, can you please engage in civil discourse without resorting to name calling? Also, please, look up the definition of the term “troll” and tell me - please - how I fit that definition? If being a troll is visiting a website that offers opinions that differs from one’s own and the intent is to engage in civil discourse, then maybe I am a troll.

May 15th, 2008 at 10:09 pmDO you not see that he/she has made an incorrect comparison. Obama’s statement HAS NO frame of reference to CHamberlain. PERIOD.

And I claim that you’re a meathead. I have quite a lot of evidence to back up this claim.
May 15th, 2008 at 10:14 pmAlecto,
You must have misunderstood. I was not comparing Obama’s statement to that of Chamberlain. I was comparing it to the statements/gaffes made by James, pointing out that there are folks on both sides - left and right - who misspeak, and that it is funny when it happens and we should all laugh. But we should not apply the false logic that if one misspeaks that he speaks for an entire group of people such as JMOHR did, as did a lot of other folks here. And, let me get this right. If I agree with everything you believe … then I am not a troll?
May 15th, 2008 at 10:17 pmhussein,
Okay. Discourse over - now let’s attack. Why is it so hard to discuss these things like adults? read through my posts and show me where I have been off-topic or espousing lies? Please..
May 15th, 2008 at 10:19 pmWhen Bush comments that Obama is an appeaser, like Neville Chamberline was to Hitler, Bush is speaking with authority since Bush himself, like Hitler, knew how to take advantage of appeasers —- as Bush has been doing with the entire Democratic Party for more than five years to advance the interests of his own Nazi-like, corporatist/ fascist Empire.
May 15th, 2008 at 10:27 pmWhen one considers the blathering idiots they worship, is it any wonder the leg-humpers are idiots as well?
May 15th, 2008 at 11:27 pmAbsolutely perfect.
This tape needs to be preserved for generations to come, as an explanation of how a percentage of the American population came to sputter talking points as their defense of any — and every — political confrontation.
No facts. No history. No wisdom.
Just bumper-sticker mantras. It’s worked for eight years. Maybe, hopefully, time’s up on the charade.
“He energized, he legitimized, he was an appeaser.”
Wipe the dry board clean, boys; time for a new slogan:
“Embolden”
“Foment”
And another new one, this one in terms of gas prices:
May 15th, 2008 at 11:57 pm“This issue didn’t happen overnight.”
Actually, in the broad scope, prices certainly have risen overnight, but you Republicans can stick to your version of the truth, like Karl Rove’s math.
Where does all this slim come from?? I had no idea that KoolAide came in all these flavors….
You can have green or you can have, uh, green!
Pete (#79) had it right….

May 16th, 2008 at 12:02 amBelieve it or not, it’s not so much the ding dongs like this that are the problem as much as it is the concerted effort by a group of media moguls to hijack and mold the political discourse in this country.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:34 amIt is no coincidence that people like Kevin James, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity exist. Their purpose is to villify and marginalize the Democratic party and liberal thinking. They do this by appealing to the lowest of human traits, xenophobia. People that are different from us are automatically wrong.
However, I have noticed a sea change in the media since Obama began his run. More dingbats like this are being called on their divisive talking points and more people are asking in depth questions of them.
In many ways, the problems that the Republican party faces today are due to the Hannitys and Limbaughs out there. They have ramped peoples fears up to the point that they will not accept anyone except a person as dysfunctional as they are. This lets moderates like McCain out and sets it up so that they are forced to pander to the ultra conservative side to gain any support. The problem is that the ultra conservative view is not one that is shared by the majority of Americans. This puts any Republican candidate between a rock and a hard place when it comes to speaking on the issues and elucidating a platform. The Republicans are put in the unenviable position of eating their own young.
To quote Mike Huckabee, a Republican I respect for his straightforward approach and his fair mindedness, (though I couldn’t vote for him), “It used to be that all you had to do was ride into town on an elephant to be elected. Nowadays, if you do that they’ll shoot the elephant out from under you.”
Megakudos to Chris Matthews for exposing the shallow mindedness of the right wing noise machine.
It’s not that we don’t want to hear what Republicans have to say. We all have something to contribute to the discourse. It’s that we don’t need to include those whose purpose is not to add to the conversation, but disrupt it.
.
Let this be proof, a collage degree does not denote intelligence.

May 16th, 2008 at 1:46 amjlang57, I have a news flash for you. Read this website. Read these threads. What do you think they are doing here, if not “vilifying” and “marginalizing”?
It just depends on what side of the fence you’re on.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:57 am#27 dotmafia is 100& correct. Sadly that’ll never see the light of day; Americans have no sense of history, they prefer to relive the mistakes of the past.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:37 amWTG Chris!
Matthews says some stupid things sometimes. But this was some good hilarious ass whoppin. Good of Chris not to let this one go and prove his point these guys dont even know basic history
pathetic indeed
May 16th, 2008 at 3:18 amHe scored 100 points in one game with the 76ers. He helped the Lakers set a record for wins in a season. And he scored with a few thousand ladies after the games.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:27 amIt’s late here in Seattle, but I recommend anyone interested in seeing a archetype rightwing moron self-destruct, checkitout!
Chris Matthews, you have won yourself a lifelong friend and fan.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:00 amKevin James isn’t wearing a flag lapel pin, he must be an appeaser who hates America according to neoclown logic.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:10 amYou mean they don’t put history lessons in the right wing talking points memos?!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:00 amIt was a bad day for the radical right. Dan Abrams, Jonathan Alter, and Catherine Crier had the smarmy Cliff May similarly levitating by the end of this clip. (May need to click on video titled Bush league tactics).
It’s good to see these propagandists being exposed for the ignorant extremists that they are. Alter was clearly livid at what Bush did - among many other things he said trying to get a word in edgewise amidst May’s ramblings, he called it a “disgusting perfomrance by the President.”
May 16th, 2008 at 8:18 amThe term “appeasement” has been trhown around too much over the past eight years (and in general). Modern history has taught us that there have been and are several world leaders whose contempt for the United States and oru allies pose no real threat to us (Castro, Qadaffi, Khomeini, et al.). It is time that we begin to repect the fact that they do not agree with us and sit down with them to agree to disagree. It is not necessary that everyone in the world share the same opinion as long as we can learn to co-exist and seek common ground where common ground is possible. Where I have been extremely critical of this and prior administrations is the attitude that we are right and they are wrong, so we should attack and kill. I also know that the likes of Ahmenijad and OBL do not represent all Islams and we need to know that by attackign all Islams because their leaders hold a radical view is essentially declaring war on an innocent people.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:28 amHuh? Because some twenty-something radio host isn’t familiar with history (gee, doesn’t that describe most people these days?) ALL who disagree with your point of view are getting bashed. Go back to school and learn something useful besides left-wing lip-flapping.
Here’s a brief history lesson:
In 1938-1939, Neville Chamberlain was Britain’s Prime Minister. At the time, Adolph Hitler was actively and aggressively expanding his reach across Europe. He had annexed Austria and was seeking to add the Czechoslovakian Sudetenland (Southern Territory). Chamberlain flew to Munich and met with Hitler in an attempt to reduce the latter’s aggression. The result was the Munich Agreement, which permitted Hitler to annex the Sudetenland and most of Czechoslovakia in return for a promise of no further aggression.
Returning to England, Chamberlain declared the agreement signaled “peace in our time.” Much of England and even France, were happy about the agreement, at first. Winston Churchill, on the other hand, declared, “We have sustained a defeat without a war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road.”
Of course, Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia, Poland and the rest is history. Hitler despised Chamberlain and essentially played him like a violin. These days, the word “appeaser” is associated automatically with Neville Chamberlain.
Wikipedia has an available history of the Munich Agreement, as does virtually any web site dealing with 20th Century history.
Just because some loudmouth didn’t do his homework, doesn’t alter the facts of history.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:58 amRsinss,
You are correct. It really bothers me that the likes of Chris Matthews, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, BIll Maher …. bring in these guests who have little knowledge base and the proceed to do their best to discredit an entire party/ideology just because one of their own does not have all the facts. You are also correct in that James did understand appeasement and ist historical meaning; he just did not know the particulars. I am sure he was doing no more than repeating what he had heard from others withou basing his opinion on solid evidence. Unfortunately, that is all too common nowadays.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:22 amKevin James is representative of the “DUMBING DOWN OF AMERICA”, which has been going on since the days of TRAITOR Ronnie Reagan.
Just like TRAITOR Bush, knows NO history, and really doesn’t care. Just spout LIES like Rush to your ill-informed audience.
The ESSENCE of Fox “news”.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:23 amBush is a Nazi, Granddaddy was a Nazi, and Daddy Bush IS a Nazi, and KNEW Saddam, Osama, Musharraf, etc.
70 YEARS of Bush TREASON against the USA.
Bush and Cheney need to be TRIED, CONVICTED, and EXECUTED by a US military FIRING SQUAD for TREASON and WAR CRIMES.
The PENALTY for committing TREASON in “wartime” (even if it’s YOUR war…).
May 16th, 2008 at 10:25 amArn,

Yup, but the MAJORITY come from Rush, Coulter, Malkin, O’Dildo the Felafel man, and Fox “news”, the Rapeublican PROPAGANDA outfit.
The TRUTH is NOT in the “middle”. It is in the TRUTH.
GW Bush has LIED us into a quagmire, along with Cheney, etc, and he is a TRAITOR to the USA, another in the line of Bush
TREASON against the USA.
He and all his PNAC buddies need to be TRIED, CONVICTED, and EXECUTED by a US military FIRING SQUAD.
The TRUTH is not “right, left, or middle”. It is the TRUTH, and it has been a CASUALTY of the Bush administration, and its Nazis
from the days of Nixon, Reagan, and TRAITOR Daddy.
As is the US Constitution.
The TREASONOUS Bush WAR CRIMINALS and the PNAC have NO USE for the TRUTH.
It is their ENEMY…
May 16th, 2008 at 10:33 amTruth can only be found if we remain in the middle and seek out truth where it exists. I have found that by isolating ourselves at the ends of the spectrum we are not open to truth, wherever it may lie (un less of course it aligns with our political affiliation).
May 16th, 2008 at 10:43 amAbout the Newsbusters thing…
CM did say that the Cole happened under Bush I, however he wasn’t being serious, he was revising history off the top of his head to make fun of KJ, it’s pretty obvious by his tone and the fact that he’s laughing as he says it.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:48 amI didn’t think we’d find someone who knew even less history than Droolin’ Chris Matthews..
“…no, no Chris it’s not the USS “Gary” Cole, and pssst, Clinton was President at the time
But then Arn Gunnutes surfaces from his rat-infested sewer.
Aren’t you reasonable and civil leftists so pleased he’s on your side?
By the way nut… I think you must be thinking of Teddy, Bobby and JFK’s nazi lovin pa, Joe Kennedy who, as the US Ambassador to Great Britain admired Hitler greatly.
He constantly urged the US to right-off Britain and make an accomodation with Nazi Germany. That’s why his own Presidential ambitions sank faster than a torpedoed U Boat on December 7, 1941. Look up the date, as I am sure you have no idea what it signifies.
Incidentally, thank for showing your true colors in attacking former President George Herbert Walker Bush. He is an actual war-hero whose plane was shot down whilst fighting actual Nazis and their allies Japan.
And thank you for your addition to public discourse. I hope you graduate High School someday, like 99% of the US military.

Again, the MAJORITY of the LIES happen from the RIGHT.
The web is full of DOCUMENTED lies by Bush, etc.
Rove is the MASTER PROPAGANDIST, who, if he has NOTHING TO HIDE, wouldn’t be trying to use “executive privilege”.
He would do his PATRIOTIC DUTY as an AMERICAN to TESTIFY UNDER OATH and TELL THE TRUTH.
He WON’T, because he is a TRAITOR, just like the Bush and PNAC WAR CRIMINALS.
Just like Traitor Ronnie Reagan, now DEAD and BURNING for his LIES and GENOCIDE.
Fox “news” SUED FOR THE RIGHT TO LIE, and WON.
Sorry, the TRUTH is the TRUTH, with FACTS to support it.
The WAR CRIMINALS and TRAITORS such as Bush are LIARS and DESERVE TO BE IN JAIL until they DROP DEAD.

And TRAITOR Ronnie Reagan, now DEAD and BURNING for his LIES and GENOCIDE.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:16 amYou are being unreasonable, Arn. There are lies on both sides. We could fill a book with lies of all politicial parties (10 chapters for republicans and 10 for Democrats), but what good would that do, other than provide fodder for hate to be directed to our fellow Americans? I think it is time for this country become united and we can only make it, together, if we are willing to set aside our hate and try to understand what and why others feel the way they do. You are very critical of the U.S. and Bush for not taking this approach with other countries yet you will not apply this same stabndard to yourself. Please, let’s try to understand each other better and not sling hate.

Yeah, the poor DUPES who are DYING for the LIES of MURDERER Bush the COXUCKEK punk TRAITOR to the USA.
The COWARDLY little PUNK who was AWOL for 18 months. What a SHINING EXAMPLE for the troops, huh?

Nope. Not “unreasonable” at all. I have WATCHED the last 8 years of LIES from TRAITOR Bush and Rupert Murcoch.
TOTAL LIES AND PROPAGANDA from Fox “news” and the Bush administration. That’s ALL they have done for 8 years.
So, SHOW us some of the “lies” from the LEFT.

Hey, Nazi azslicker, YOU say that they BOTH lie so voluminously.
But THEN you REFUSE to provide ANY of the “lies”.
Like I said, here is a START: TRAITOR Bush’s LIES:

So, NOW, YOU can start telling us ALL about the “lies” of the LEFT, OK?

Just the BS “they ALL do it”.
And, YES, you ARE a TRAITOR against the USA, if you support TRASONOUS and MURDEROUS WAR CRIMINALS like Bush, Cheney and Rove.
Who, if he had NOTHING TO HIDE, wouldn’t HIDE behind “executive privilege”, when in fact he has COMMITTED TREASON.

Please, please, write something in regular font, not bold, just for a little bit of variety.
Jack Bauer,
Come on man, it’s pretty obvious that Matthews’ Cole comment was made in jest in order to make fun of James. Listen to his tone when he says it. He’s making the incorrect statement on purpose because he’s saying what does it matter, James won’t know the history anyway.
Matthews’ whole point is if you’re going to go around yelling “appeasement” you better know the relevant history. The fact that this guy, who has no idea what the history actually is beyond calling Chamberlain an appeaser, is being sent out to defend the President’s pathetic remarks that violate the concept of politics stopping at the water’s edge is disgusting.
Obama said he would TALK to Ahmadinejad, not give him half of Czechoslovakia. Talking is DIPLOMACY, giving them whatever they want with in nothing in return in the hope that they will be nice is APPEASEMENT.

After all that has been said and done to those who were not living the lie that was/is the Republican (Repuppetcan) brand these past 7 years, for you to all of a sudden say and think that we will come together is a fantasy in and of itself. There have been some horrendous accusations and straight out lies directed to/at us non-Bush backers. Even I as a 22 year Army retiree (1 Dec 2007, YES!) 4 time Iraq/Afghanistan combat veteran, 2 time Purple Heart recipient, has been called Un-Patriotic by people who have not only not served, but know of noone personally who has.
The divisions that are rampant in this country have been made by thise of you who would/could not see that this administration was/is corrupt, incompotent, deceitful,etc.. And NOW, NOW when it seems that there will be a new direction you call for peace, when you know that if a Democrat (aka Scaredy-crat) wins the WH, all of a sudden there will be calls for accountability and oversight, then there will be calls for transparency, then the so-called media will use their powers of investigation instead of compliance, and only then will you and your ilk see what is going on right under your noses.

May 16th, 2008 at 11:54 amJust because this man is ignorant doesn’t make him wrong.Afterall Shakespear frequently used the court jester to make his most cogent points. In answer to Mr. Matthews who did not seem to realize that the Munich conference was in 1938 not in 1939-It was a lame attempt by well meaning representatives of France and Britain to avoid a replay of the first world war.THey therfore carved up the post world war 1 state of checkeslovakia handing Herr Hitler the Sudetenland which had a large ethnic German population.Sadly the check representative in Berlin was informed after the treaty was signed. In return for acquiring the sudetenland Hitler promised not to invade any other european country and both Chamberlain and M.Deladiet announced”Peace in our time”.In MARCH 1939 hITLER TORE UP THE AGREEMENT AND SWALLOWED up the rest of the check and slovakian state enteringPrague in 1939.It is fair to say that the leadership in Iran has threatened to wipe Israel off the map. They are pursuing nuclear weapons to accomplish this.As Jewish history is replete with slaughter the Jewish people must take the Iranian President at his word.Ironically, when history is writtten Bush may end up being right that discussion with such aregime by an Obama Presidency ended up in a second holocaust buying time for the fanatics to get their hands on the means to kill 7 million poor Jewish souls living in Israel. And so Matthews may have proven that this guy is a clown but sometimes clowns end up having the last word and being sadly correct.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:58 amNo I dont, but the calls of peace and love (yea right) going out by “former” Bush supporters and Republicans in general seem a bit hollow to me. You will NEVER get me to forget the things that have been said and done by those of YOU who have betrayed EVERYTHING this country STOOD for.

May 16th, 2008 at 12:05 pmTired,
I don’t blame you for being angry with the administration. that is fine. But, keep this in mind: there are a good number fo conservatives who feel similarly about the left and some of their policies. I am a Catholic and I firmly believe that an abortion is the killing of an unborn child. I don’t think it gets more offensive than that. Now, you can say that you don’t agree with me - that a child in the womb is only a fetus and therefore it is not murder. That is fine - that is what you believe. But do acknowledge that there are others who feel strongly, very strongly, that it is murder. I will be honest. If there was a democratic candidate who was pro-life, i would strongly consider voting for her/him. And if he/she ran against a republican who was not pro-life, there would be no questions which way i would vote.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:33 pmArn is the extremely pissed off American that most of us hold back. Maybe we shouldn’t be holding back. I’ve always said that if you are not pissed off at bush/co you haven’t been paying attention!

Bern,
It is so tricky trying to figure out whether Ahmenijad is a real threat or not. If he is and we do nothing, we (US) will be criticized. If we do seomthing we will be criticized. I don’t know what to think about Iran. I also ask myself when is war apropriate. These are complex questions for thoughtful individuals to ponder. I have no answers but am open to hearing what the rest of you think
May 16th, 2008 at 1:09 pmI take particular offense to the fact that conservatives and republicans at large, argue that some how they are more patriotic, more eager to protect this country. Kevin James and other conservatives argue from a position of ignorance. How can anyone with a radio show not know what concessions Neville Chamberlain made to Hitler? Armed with unwieldy word conjugations like “appeaser” they set about misinforming an audience that is unwilling to seek out the truth.
Why is it that the notable Conservative talk show hosts, the same hosts that McCain is so supplicant to, just happen to be people who did not get through college; Rush, Hannity etc. Why are we having a national debate about life and death issues with these ignorant bluster-peddlers(my one unwieldy word- for this life time)? How about we MEET and TALK with them? That’s ALWAYS a “good first step”.
The FIRST word I started hearing when the Bush TREASONISTS took over was the word “enemy”.
Also, war is appropriate for DEFENSE, when it can be shown with FACT (not LIES and rhetoric) that a country is a threat.
ALL the religious leaders that Bush met with, from Pope John Paul to the head of the Methodists, told Bush his war was
NOT JUST, and was a WAR OF AGGRESSION, making Bush and his PNAC boys WAR CRIMINALS.
You mentioned “going to heaven”.
Do you REALLY believe, given the LIES and the GENOCIDE caused by TRAITOR Bush, that Jesus will recommend him for “heaven”
to the Almighty God??
God SEES the GENOCIDE and HEARS the LIES by Bush, and He will judge JUSTLY and ACCORDINGLY.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:32 pmArn Gunnutes
I agree with your criteria for a just war. Please do not shout, it is too much like a Republican to do that. Wisdom whispers.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:40 pmArn, to your points:
1)We should talk to them
2)History has taught us that the disnction between a legitimate threat and a false threat are quite blurred
3)Religious leaders - God bless them - are experts in matters of spirituality, not defense or foreign policy.
4) You may be right and if we try Bush as a traitor he should eb joined by every senator and congressman who voted to send troops into Iraq, as well as by the leaders of the various other countries who also supported the invasion.
5)It is not to me to determine people’s motives or how they will be judged. Only one can do that. You are correct though, he will “judge justly and accordingly” and those who reap hate will sow hate in the afterlife.

4) Sorry. Even if they gave Bush authorization (under threat of being called a TRAITOR if they DIDN’T), Bush and his PNAC WAR CRIMINALS made the call to invade.
They DIDN’T HAVE TO. But they DID. WAR CRIMINALS. THEY come first in any trials. They you can ask about trying Senators.
5) That’s TRUE. God is the ULTIMATE JUDGE. And he SEES the GENOCIDE and HEARS the LIES committed by Bush. The BIBLE would tell us that he is MORTALLY breaking the Commandments.
And again, I HATE absolutely NO ONE. I am just disgusted by MURDERERS, TRAITORS and LIARS like Bush who have SHREDDED the

May 16th, 2008 at 1:51 pmIf we are seruious about trying trying traitors (and the acts of Bush/Cheney and leaders across both parties are found traiterous according to the constitution), I would have no problem with all of them receiving their due, led by Bush and Cheney. if we have evidence that he lied under oath, that’s all I need to know.
God is the Judge - we agree.
One point though, you say you hate no one
May 16th, 2008 at 2:14 pmbut you are quick to call me a nazi traitor and one who has nazi heroes. These are not true and you know it. please rescind these hateful remarks and let’s - as two fellow Americans who love their country - continue to engage in civil discourse.

“leaders”? Nope. Just ILLEGALLY selected WAR CRIMINALS who have POLITICED the DOJ, TREASONOUSLY outed CIA spies for revenge, and jailed both Americans and non-Americans WITHOUT CHARGE.
Who planned to attack Iraq BEFORE 9/11 (Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill has said so based on meetings he attended).
So, what is “success” in this ILLEGAL INVASION and OCCUPANCY?
More DEATH to US soldiers and MORE TERRORISTS created, as the CIA had WARNED Bush would happen if he invaded Iraq.
And Osama is STILL FREE (or DEAD, if you believe Benazir Bhutto before she was KILLED), and TRAITOR Bush DOESN’T CARE.
By the way, if Rove HAS NOTHING TO HIDE, then as a “patriotic” amerikkkan, he shouldn’t HIDE behind “executive privilege”
concerning the Siegelman and US Attorneys’ cases.
But he DOES have something to HIDE.
TREASON. HIS, Bush’s and Dick Cheney’s.
So, if YOU believe in “leaders” who are TRAITORS, then YES, YOU are a TRAITOR to the USA as well.
And will end up burning in hell with the TREASONOUS Bush Crime Family, and TRAITOR Ronnie Reagan, already DEAD and BURNING.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:33 pmGood sir, I need to step away from you now (you are getting under my skin a little bit - and when I start to get angry like this, I know I cannot engage in civil discourse) because you continue to imply that i am a traitor based on illogical associations. I hope you have a nice day and I look forward to discuss this controversial issue with you at another time. I am confident that by virtue of our dialogue, we have begun the healing process and I no doubt believe that in the near future we can stand united together again. I feel better now and wish you the very best.

Yup. Go pray to your TREASONOUS heroes, Bush, Cheney and Reagan.
And ask the Almighty God to FORGIVE you for your support of TREASON and GENOCIDE by Bush and Cheney….
I wish YOU the best also. Start being a REAL American and REJECT its takeover by Nazi Fascists like Bush and the PNAC.
Buh-bye!!

Arn is the extremely pissed off American that most of us hold back. Maybe we shouldn’t be holding back. I’ve always said that if you are not pissed off at bush/co you haven’t been paying attention!
You’re so right specialist f. In the days of our forefathers these men would have been tarred and feathered and rode out of town tied backwards on their horses. There’s is incredible anger seething right now, as was shown by the flare-up over Bush’s Knesset remarks. A figurative call-to-arms is in order.
For my part, I fear the creep of religious intolerance. This guy Rod Parsley calls for the US to destroy a major world religion, calls US Muslims disloyal, and McCain legitamizes him with praise calling him a great American leader. My @ss! No great American leader would preach religious intolerance. WAKE UP AMERICA. Do your part to end the Bush/McCain madness or there are dark days ahead.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:09 pmindyjones,
When (if) you come back:
The comment by Obama you cite may be roughly comparable to McCain’s remark about Iranians (Shiites) helping al Qaeda in Iraq. Neither is as disingenuous or, in my opinion, as odious, as claiming that engaging in diplomacy = appeasing (as in making major concessions, hoping they will be satisfied) and especially, attempting to exploit the understandable emotional reaction Jews have to Hitler.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:18 pmThank goodness for Newsbusters.
Chris Matthews really gave that right-winger a history lesson!
May 16th, 2008 at 5:43 pm… except he said Bush was in office when the USS Cole was attacked.
Thank goodness for
