Bush Once Again Fails To ‘Jawbone’ King Abdullah At His Horse Ranch Into Increasing Oil Production»

bush-king-2web2.jpg During the 2000 presidential campaign, President Bush criticized the Clinton administration for high fuel prices and said that as president, he would take a much tougher approach — “jawbone OPEC members to lower the price“:

What I think the president ought to do [when gas prices spike] is he ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots…And the president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price.

Last January, Bush went to Saudi Arabia to “jawbone” King Abdullah into increasing oil production in an effort to bring rising gas prices down in the United States. But perhaps because the jawboning session occurred in the comforts of the King’s horse ranch, the King declined Bush’s kind request.

Bush was back in Saudi Arabia today meeting with the King to make a second appeal for the oil-rich nation to increase its crude output. But again, instead of jawboning, Bush took the horse farm approach and failed once again:

The White House says Saudi Arabia’s leaders are making clear they see no reason to increase oil production until customers demand it.

President Bush was in the oil-rich country Friday to appeal to King Abdullah for greater production to help halt rising gas prices in the United States. […]

Bush was spending the day with Abdullah at his horse farm outside Riyadh, talking mostly out of public view over three tea services and two meals.

But Bush’s Saudi Arabia junkets are perhaps more symbolic than anything else. In fact, there’s evidence to suggest that even if the King had agreed to increase Saudi Arabia’s oil production, its effect on lowering gas prices in the U.S. would have been minimal to non-existent.

While “[n]obody has cracked the code” to the cause of high gas prices, there are other issues that contribute, such as a weak dollar. But seeing that the King of Saudi Arabia has little control of the dollar’s value, it seems Bush’s visits indicate his continued addiction to oil rather than any adherence to sound policy that helps Americans.

Brad Johnson breaks down other key components to high gas prices over at the Wonk Room.

In classic authoritarian style, this statement presumes that we can simply demand what we want and compliance is mandatory. Not only has this never been true, but now that Bush has managed to plunge America’s stock somewhere below Enron’s, nobody has much of a reason to listen to any of our demands.

Yes , “basic economics” stipulates that the company making the highest annual profit in human history , is not going to allow nor be involved in any way in relinquishing that stranglehold on that insane amount ………..

Viability isn’t about profit-making or economics ; and people aren’t using other sources because alternative fuel ideas and inventions have been suppressed………

  42. Jackie Says:

Two thumbs up for the Saudis they played the game well and won. The Saudi Government watched and feed the idiot Bush Family and Dark Cheney for many many years waiting like a scorpion to attack. Like the Turtle/Scorpion story. The Saudis saw idiot baby Bush and feed him what ever he wanted, while dealing the Daddy Bush. Then 2000 election came and everything was in place even Bandar was attached to keep track of baby Bush. Yes Bush/Cheney told Americans that taking Iraq would make oil prices cheaper as the US would control the oil. Little did the Idiot Team know it was poker at it’s best. Most Americans didn’t even know the US gets oil from Iran. Then the time came to call the game and the winner is the Middle East. What does baby Bush and Dark Cheney do, well they beg for more oil and what does the now Powerful Saudi King say NO! Yes it takes a smart patient Leader to win it all. While Americans were told to hate the Middle East, the Middle East has been buying up the USA. Yes China got in on the sale too. To watch a US President drop so low as to keep begging for oil is just sad. The World Leaders can tell a strong, determined, qualified, experienced Leader and right now there’s only one. But the American people just want rebate checks and watch American Idol and hope things change. When we hit our second Great Depression, Americans will wake up and demand a Great American Leader like Hillary Clinton come in and save us all. Funny how people really don’t care who saves their lives when their about to die, but it’s all about race/sex when we’re doing ok. When the 9/11 attack came there were no direction not to hit only blacks or whites the bomb just killed Americans.

We have to build an infastructure in this country to support some of the alternatives. Which should have been done at least 10 years ago. This way the transistion could have been gradual and less expensive.

The car manufacturers need to jump on board also. If the government had started making mandates for the conversion, not just in alternative fuels but in other ways such as Green Vehicles. We would not be in the situation we are currently in. Begging the Saudi’s, which have already told us “No” we want to make sure future generations will be secure.

No, much has been caused by the outsourcing of the production of many of our goods. This has helped those countries to develope their industry, raise their standard of living and started them on the path of comsumption. They are now competitors in the world market for oil. Prices will continue to rise until people cut back on consumption which will lower demand that will bring prices down.

Meanwhile, gas rationing might help, or reducing the cost of public transportation, anything to get people out of their gas gussling vehicles. Oh, we could stop the wasting of millions of gallons of fuel our military is burning up every day and bring the troops home.

Is it possible that the Saudis can’t increase their oil production?
I don’t claim to be an expert, but a quick google search shows that the Saudis have been very secretive about their oil production. There is some speculation, some of it based on satillite photos, that the Gwahar field which is the biggest in the world has peaked in output. Once an oilfield is mature, water has to be pumped into the ground to create pressure to remove the remaining oil. The Saudis are pumping in huge amounts of sea water to maintain their current production level, 5+ million barrels a day . As time goes on the water content of the oil coming out of the ground increases which eventually is very bad news for the producer.

P.S The Mexican Canterell oilfield is the 3rd largest in the world, but has ALREDY PEAKED and is in decline.
Today the Mexican Dept. of Energy announced that Mexico is going to face a severe energy crisis in the near future.
Texas oil well production rates are no where near where they were at their peak 30-40 years ago, even with more efficient technology.
Oil is not going to completely disappear, but we are in for an extreme lifestyle change. We are headed for $150-200/barrel oil very soon. In a few years gas guzzling SUV’s will go the way of the dinosaur.
Why do I have the feeling that back in 2000, Dick Cheney knew all this?

  80. tarazan Says:

    This is all hype,

America only imports 15-17 % of its oil from Saudi Arabia, what about other countries like Nigeria,Venezuela, Mexico,Norway and many others…that we don’t talk about?!!
Crude Saudi oil takes months after arrival to be processed.
American oil companies said repeatedly that hey don’t have enough refineries to process imported oil.
How much does it cost to build a refinery?!!
Then you have the Wall Street’s future commodity traders who sets the price of oil,and making billions of this commodity in short period of time.
Then you have the health of the dollar under which all sales of oil are priced and made, which lost half ot its value to the Euro in the last few years.
Then you have the tax on every sold gallon to consumers…
In many states it is about 1/5th to 1/6 of the price of a gallon.
So, it is not all Saudi problems; many of these problems are ours.
It is easy to sit down and blame the Saudis, and ignore our own share of these problems…
What have we done since 1973 Oil crisis…?!!
    nothing.
What advancements in science and technology we achieved to help save energy in the last 20 years..?
    few…
What plans do we have ,other than stupid Hillary’s and McCain plans for summer driving designed to score few political points, and put $30.00 TO $40.00 in drivers’ pockets in 3 months.? !!
Yes, we have a serious problem…and it will be bigger as our cities and population get bigger.
What mass transit systems and plans to build more do we have…?
    Not many
You can keep blaming Saudi Arabia, but that will not solve anything…
The Problem is ours..and it should be solved by us,and we should look somewhere else outside this daily hype of putting the balme on Saudi Arabia only.
Oil is a commodity, just like any commodity..and it is subject to demand and supply…when our demand is reaching the roof, and on the other hand supply is getting lesser, besides the dollar value is nosediving, then the price per gallon will go up.
We need leadership that cares and also willing to be supportive to new and fresh ideas ,not only in the Administration , but also in the House and Senate.

I thought Bush once said that America needs to REDUCE it’s dependance on foreign crude oil…

He did. In a SOTU speech from a few years ago. Said he wanted to wean the U.S. off of foreign oil within 10 years. But, a few days after that, several administration spokesmen said that Bush wasn’t being serious.

  83. Jess Wonderin Says:

America be afraid, be VERY afraid . . . China makes 90% of our underwear . . . it will be tough to cover the large number of asses in Washington if they cut production . . .

  84. Pedro el Sabio Says:

I think the Saudis are very smart….they are saving their oil for the future. Imagine what will happen to them when they run out of oil, if they don’t take care of it, they’ll be running around on camels trying to sell each other figs and goat meat.

I don’t want to sound rude, but you Americans should learn to use less fuel. Why not try driving smaller cars? Your vehicle fleet looks like it spent a month eating at McDonald’s. Also, some mass transit would help you out.

If you want to, come to Spain and see how we do it, of we can send you some our government experts to show how it’s done. But I’m not sure we can get much expertising done in the USA if you have a President like Bush.

    Leftside Annie-

WOW - please share the secret with me - if OIL is “OVER” - how should we ship our goods across this country?
And how are we continuing to manufacture “alternative” vehicles without oil? And are tractors and airplanes running on fairy dust these days?

  86. janh64 Says:

Heh - Pedro - care to compare the geographies????????
    (Not to mention the economies?)

How come some comments written without offensive language do not show up on the site? I’m specifically referring to comments written by ToddMcLauchlin that people have responded to and included his original quote, but I don’t see the quote he posted before their responses.
