How come some comments written without offensive language do not show up on the site? I'm specifically referring to comments written by ToddMcLauchlin that people have responded to and included his original quote, but I don't see the quote he posted before their responses.

Leftside Annie-

WOW - please share the secret with me - if OIL is "OVER" - how should we ship our goods across this country?
And how are we continuing to manufacture "alternative" vehicles without oil? And are tractors and airplanes running on fairy dust these days?

I think the Saudis are very smart....they are saving their oil for the future. Imagine what will happen to them when they run out of oil, if they don't take care of it, they'll be running around on camels trying to sell each other figs and goat meat.

I don't want to sound rude, but you Americans should learn to use less fuel. Why not try driving smaller cars? Your vehicle fleet looks like it spent a month eating at McDonald's. Also, some mass transit would help you out.

If you want to, come to Spain and see how we do it, of we can send you some our government experts to show how it's done. But I'm not sure we can get much expertising done in the USA if you have a President like Bush.

Max-1 Says:

I thought Bush once said that America needs to REDUCE it’s dependance on foreign crude oil…

He did. In a SOTU speech from a few years ago. Said he wanted to wean the U.S. off of foreign oil within 10 years. But, a few days after that, several administration spokesmen said that Bush wasn't being serious.

This is all hype,

America only imports 15-17 % of its oil from Saudi Arabia, what about other countries like Nigeria,Venezuela, Mexico,Norway and many others...that we don't talk about?!!
Crude Saudi oil takes months after arrival to be processed.
American oil companies said repeatedly that hey don't have enough refineries to process imported oil.
How much does it cost to build a refinery?!!
Then you have the Wall Street's future commodity traders who sets the price of oil,and making billions of this commodity in short period of time.
Then you have the health of the dollar under which all sales of oil are priced and made, which lost half ot its value to the Euro in the last few years.
Then you have the tax on every sold gallon to consumers...
In many states it is about 1/5th to 1/6 of the price of a gallon.
So, it is not all Saudi problems; many of these problems are ours.
It is easy to sit down and blame the Saudis, and ignore our own share of these problems...
What have we done since 1973 Oil crisis...?!!
nothing.
What advancements in science and technology we achieved to help save energy in the last 20 years..?
few...
What plans do we have ,other than stupid Hillary's and McCain plans for summer driving designed to score few political points, and put $30.00 TO $40.00 in drivers' pockets in 3 months.? !!
Yes, we have a serious problem...and it will be bigger as our cities and population get bigger.
What mass transit systems and plans to build more do we have...?
Not many
You can keep blaming Saudi Arabia, but that will not solve anything...
The Problem is ours..and it should be solved by us,and we should look somewhere else outside this daily hype of putting the balme on Saudi Arabia only.
Oil is a commodity, just like any commodity..and it is subject to demand and supply...when our demand is reaching the roof, and on the other hand supply is getting lesser, besides the dollar value is nosediving, then the price per gallon will go up.
We need leadership that cares and also willing to be supportive to new and fresh ideas ,not only in the Administration , but also in the House and Senate.

Perhaps the oil companies have decided the best way to force drilling off American coastal waters is to jack the price up, and cry about middle eastern supply.

Is it possible that the Saudis can't increase their oil production?
I don't claim to be an expert, but a quick google search shows that the Saudis have been very secretive about their oil production. There is some speculation, some of it based on satillite photos, that the Gwahar field which is the biggest in the world has peaked in output. Once an oilfield is mature, water has to be pumped into the ground to create pressure to remove the remaining oil. The Saudis are pumping in huge amounts of sea water to maintain their current production level, 5+ million barrels a day . As time goes on the water content of the oil coming out of the ground increases which eventually is very bad news for the producer.

P.S The Mexican Canterell oilfield is the 3rd largest in the world, but has ALREDY PEAKED and is in decline.
Today the Mexican Dept. of Energy announced that Mexico is going to face a severe energy crisis in the near future.
Texas oil well production rates are no where near where they were at their peak 30-40 years ago, even with more efficient technology.
Oil is not going to completely disappear, but we are in for an extreme lifestyle change. We are headed for $150-200/barrel oil very soon. In a few years gas guzzling SUV's will go the way of the dinosaur.
Why do I have the feeling that back in 2000, Dick Cheney knew all this?

The cure for high gas prices IS High gas prices. When gas was less than a dollar a gallon, NOBODY was talking about any of this.
America needs a Massive retrofit in it's infrastructure. We need lightweight electric cars, and renewable energy to power it.We need out communities redesigned away from dependence on the automobile and commuting to work and shop. 30 years ago, president Carter Warned us about this...the moral equivalent of war was his phrasing. No One Listened..now we are running out of time.
We Can do this...we must do this...but first we need Real Political leadership...and the oil men out of the whitehouse.

Leftside Annie Says:
Prytania: the age of oil is OVER.

Too bad so many of you reichwingers are too bloody stupid to see it.

If that statement were only true. You my friend are the stupid one for thinking you can flip a switch and end our need for oil. This situation is very complicated and by just simply stating the age of oil is over show your lack of understating. I wish the problem were as easy as just blaming Bush which by the way is an obsession of this site and it followers. Sounds like a good bumper sticker. Have a problem? Just blame Bush!!

Someone posted this earlier. The last thing that Bush wants is OPEC and SA to increase production.

Read it and weep. This is from Greg Palast.
