Huckabee: ‘I apologize that my comments were offensive.’»

Earlier today, while speaking at the NRA convention in Louisville, KY, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee made an offhand joke after being interrupted by an offstage noise. In his joke, Huckabee claimed that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “dove for the floor” when “somebody aimed a gun at him.” Huckabee has released a statement apologizing for the remark:

During my speech at the NRA a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention.

Obama was placed under secret service protection last year — the earliest ever for a U.S. presidential candidate — because of racially motivated threats.

Another unapologetic apology. Here, Huckleberry, let me help:

“I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I was wrong to say it, and I apologize for doing so.

Why is that so hard for politicians–either party–to say? How can presumptive leaders be so afraid of even this token accountability?

  3. sectionop92 Says:

I think Huckabee was trying to be funny in a sophomoric sense but he staggered majorly in his delivery and a really bad joke turned into a nuclear mess. In-essence, he shot himself in the foot and then in the face…badda-bing!

Obama might be having the best two days ever since his campaign started. Hell, the GOP is inadvertently mending the wounds of the Democratic Party by just being loud and dumb. Who knew those two things would be an good thing?

  6. Merlin Says:

I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention.

This apology is not sincere. It is a joke. He got caught saying what he believes. He believes Obama is a coward. (Leave the possible racial context out of it for the moment.) A scardy cat that jumps at the slightest noise. It was a joking put down, demeaning and belittling Obama behind his back when he had no chance to answer the taunt. His chosen audience laughed appreciatively at the joke, which he reveled in.

I would like to see this hypocrite explain what he meant by saying it, IF indeed there is another reason.

Meanwhile, back at the NRA Convention:
(HaHaHa, Mr. Huckabee that was a good one! But it was offensive and you should apologize! Know what we mean? wink, wink.)

  13. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

The apology rings hollow. As mentioned earlier, he was clearly trying to paint Sen Obama as a coward and it was, therefore, a disparaging remark.

It’s too bad that the NRA refuses to educate people about the difference between an individual right (such as to a speedy trial) and a collective right (such as “the right of the people to keep and bear arms”.) The people can have a well-regulated militia (uh-oh, there’s that word “regulated” again!) and they can decide how and where arms will be used and stored for their militias. There is no individual right to own any kind of weapon you can imagine in the Second Amendment.

    Now go have your fun.

  21. BigGuy Says:

Huckabee’s off-hand remark was not humorous. He and his supporters have NEVER given Hilary and Bill Clinton and Al Gore the benefit of the doubt when they have said their comments were not meant to offend or disparage, but have impugned their motives.

He is a man of the cloth who is willing to speak and throw excrement for a laugh.

May he live to bury his own children. May he and his wife suffer from starvation so great that they are forced to eat the afterbirth of her miscarriages to survive. May his mind and body be as crippled as his soul. May sulphurous fumes fill the air he breathes to the end of his days. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

It’s too bad that the NRA refuses to educate people

If I were a gun owner, and I am not, I would have great difficulty belonging to an organization like the NRA. I’m sure there are good people who belong to the NRA but their reputation sure is bad.

  24. Zooey Says:

It’s all or nothing with these gun idiots.

    **eyes rolling**

  25. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

If I remember my NRA history, I believe they were founded after it was discovered that many of our soldiers who died in the Spanish-American War did so needlessly because they didn’t know how to properly use and maintain their weapons. So the National Rifle Association was founded to teach gun safety and proper gun maintenance and use. And I applaud that. And I wouldn’t care if they had stopped there. But then they started to get very politcal.

And somewhere along the line they got the idea that any attempt to limit the acquisition of guns would mean the eventual seizure of all of them. I do believe that the Supreme Court has already decided that there is no absolute individual right to own guns and that they can be regulated to a certian extent.

It is my belief that the vast majority of NRA supporters could not quote the Second Amendment in its entirety. All they seem to know is the part ion the NRA’s headquarters, “…the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” They like to pretend that the pretext for this, “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state,…”, does not exist, and that only the part about you owning guns applies. They need to work on their education programs more.

  26. Zooey Says:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

    Moron.

  27. LiberalVoter Says:

The poster in #25 is exactly the type of person who gives the NRA a bad name. I guess cleaning up their own, and screening to keep weapons out of the hands of these types is beyond them. Probably the same low intelligence types that have no idea how to properly handle a weapon and misuses it to shoot holes in trash cans and signs in national forests. Very sad. Hopefully the poster will seek out help for mental issues.

  28. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Okay, this is the last time I’ll address you, Savage_Weiner_Rules, as you clearly do not understand the issues. And you seem to have reading comprehension problems as well.

I stated that there is no individual right to own guns. I never said that we should take them all away from you. You made that up in your own mind.

I am impressed that you could find a copy of the Second to quote, but I see you ignored the part I said the NRA ignores. The context of this right “of the people” (not of a person.) If you are part of a well-regulated militia, then you may have a gun.

Are you part of a well-regulated militia? Probably not, so the right in this amendment would not apply to you. (I would consider police officers to qualify as a well-regulated militia in this context, so cops can have guns.)

And you really should stop making veiled threats against my life. That kind of talk could get you in trouble with the law. Have fun pointing your guns at them.

    Good night.

  36. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Well, in the first place, I think you’re lying about reporting me to the FBI. That doesn’t surprise me, nor would it bother me if you did. For I have made no such “threats”. I have simply stated that you do not have the right you think you have. And, for the record, unlike Stalin and the other heroes of yours with whom you compared me, I have never killed anyone nor fired a weapon at another human being, even during my time in the Air Force.

  50. Jeremy in Denver Says:

Well, ain’t that grand. My comment is awaiting moderation. I guess it had to do with the acronym ‘I am not a lawyer’…

Let me restate it so I can get in the conversation without waiting on TP’s moderating staff to log in in the morning.

The full text of the second amendment is ‘A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of the free State, the right for the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.’ What the likes of Savage_Rules doesn’t get is that the second amendment has strings.

A ‘well regulated militia’ is what is key. IMO, and ‘I am not a lawyer’, a militia doesn’t have to be the National Guard. Militias are, after all, nothing more than citizen armies that are raised or even raise themselves for homeland defense. However, all militias need to be ‘well regulated’. What does this mean? There are regulations you must follow to keep and bear arms. These regulations are up to the cities and states to code. Most of them deal with who is eligible to wield a gun (we don’t want a guy who just tried to bash his wife’s head in with a baseball bat to buy a gun, for example), what must be done to prove that eligibility (show that you’re up to the responsibilities that go with that right), and handle others rights NOT to be in the middle of a crossfire (concealed carry permits, for example).

If Savage_Rules really wanted to keep his guns, his first goal would be to familiarize himself with the rules and regulations. His second priority would be educating those around him and doing everything in his power to ensure that only those who are competent, well trained, and conscientious can carry firearms. When some yahoo decides to go rambo in the community school or some idiot leaves his gun and ammo easily available so little johnny can get them and go on a killing rampage at the local highschool to punish all the guys who called him a dweeb and all the girls who wouldn’t go out with him, communities decide they don’t want to let people have guns.

The problem is that people want all the rights and none of the responsibilities. It’s easier for Savage_Rules to rant about ‘evil libruls tryin’ to take mah gunz!’ than become a responsible gun owner and fight to keep guns from being used irresponsibly. The responsible gun owner understands that guns are a dangerous thing and that responsible gun owners must do everything in their power to avoid furthering the image that all gun owners are cowboys and loose cannons that are just going to get us all killed.

As a responsible gun owner, I definitely think that Savage_Rules is the perfect example of why gun ownership is so heavily regulated. When you threaten to kill someone with a gun, you’ve become part of the problem, not part of the solution…

  63. Bluestocking Says:

Pay very close attention to the specific wording of that so-called apology, kids. I don’t think it’s a real apology at all — or rather, he’s not apologizing for the substance of his remarks but only for the fact that some people found them offensive. Whether even he realizes it himself or not, Huckabee is lying through his teeth when he says that he had no intention of offending or disparaging Obama — if that intention weren’t lurking somewhere in his mind, he wouldn’t have come out with those sort of remarks in the first place.

I’ve said it before and might as well say it again…perhaps this is a side effect of the fact that most of my psychology professors were Freudians, but I’m of the opinion that people never (and I do mean never) say anything like Huckabee did without meaning it on at least some level. Make no mistake — whether Huckabee is willing to consciously acknowledge it or not even in the privacy of his own thoughts, he very much intended to offend and disparage Obama. However, it wouldn’t be politically expedient for him to admit that — hence the pseudo-apology. Had the sentiment not already been in his head and in his heart, it could not have come out of his mouth — it’s that simple. It’s possible that he can’t consciously acknowledge it even in the privacy of his own thoughts — after all, deliberately disparaging and offending other people is not something that a (supposedly) God-Fearing Good Christian(TM) like Huckabee should be doing — but even the Bible acknowledges that all human beings, including good Christians, are sinful and often do things they shouldn’t be doing.

  80. Badger Says:

I just checked Obama’s website . While he addresses most important issues, I could not find his position on Guns.

Americans hold widely divergent attitudes towards Guns, hunting, Crime, Self Defense. and the Second Ammendment. In my rural area of the country, many voters vote against their own economic interests because of their attitude towards guns.

Obama needs to present a nuanced and persuasive policy on Guns, that will allay the fears of some gun owners that “the
Democrats want to take their guns away”…while providing common sense, effective methods of keeping guns away from people who shouldn’t have them..children, mental patients, criminals etc.

I expect Obama to win Big in November, but if crucial swing states become critical, a common sense policy on guns will be very important to his candidacy.

  81. Imichael Says:

    Badger,
Did you catch Bill Maher’s show on Democrats and the second admendment? He said that gun owners have to be stupid if they really think Democrats are trying to take away there guns. Fear is the only desperate act left for the Repukes.

Huckabee’s comments were not only offensive, they were dangerous. We don’t need people joking about shooting Obama when that threat is very real because of the number of racists that are still left in this country.

  83. Dirty Hippie Says:

Huckabee: I made an offhand remark cuz I had some bad squirrel for lunch. I meant to say “macaca”.

    God Bless,

    Mike

  84. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

    Merlin Says:
This apology is not sincere. It is a joke. He got caught saying what he believes. He believes Obama is a coward.

I would like to see someone aim a gun at Huckabee and see how quickly he would hit the floor.

The right wing is in panic mode. There will be more incidents like this because they don’t know how to put their brain in gear before they put their mouth in gear when they are in this mode.

  85. Badger Says:

    IMichael,

While I am a big fan of Bill Maher, I didn’t see the show you mentioned.

I don’t think most gun owners are stupid, but many have been mislead by skillfull propaganda from the NRA and other gun rights groups. They cite examples like Washinton DC’s gun policy, and claim the democrats want to do that to the whole country. I agree that the notion that the Govt. could or would take away peoples guns is absurd. Equally absurd is the notion that a “one size fits all” gun policy is workable.
Gun policy in rural areas should not be the same as gun policy in crime ridden urban areas. Gun PURCHASES could allow a National solution. No one with a mental illness, like the shooter at Virginia Tech, should find it easy to buy a handgun, regardless of where they live.

While it would be nice if most people would educate themselves on important issues ,by keyboard or other methods, a lot of voters simply won’t spend the time.

That’s why Obama needs to Spell it out. It won’t be easy, but it will help him.

  86. stewarjt Says:

We knew he was a religious wacko, now we know he is a racist.

He was joking about a presidential candidate being shot in front of the NRA for chrissakes! The NRA!!! How is that not offensive to everyone, but them?

  87. Kay Says:

    Repeat after me:

    1/20/09

  88. Guido the Loving OBGYN Says:

Yep, Huckabee issued a standard Republican non-apology apology.

  89. ThomasMc Says:

Leave it to a born-again Christian to suggest an assassination attempt on a black presidential candidate!

  90. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Perry logan Says:

Now I’m scared. A Republican apologizing is a sure sign of the Apocalypse.

Rest easy, Perry. If you look closely at Huckabee’s response, you’ll see it isn’t really an apology at all.

I guess Bush will have to bomb Iran to bring about the Apocalypse, as originally planned.

  91. OleHippieChick Says:

Do I hear “Dueling Banjos”? Jayz, whatta backwater guy Huckles is.

They’d be surprised to know how many of us Socialists got guns, too. Self-defense knows no politics.

  92. Innocent Bystander Says:

After finally watching the video, I now have a completely different impression of this ‘Joke”. I think the noise ( a chair dropping?) was staged to give Huck the opportunity to make his prepared “joke”. Look at the timing of Huck’s comments…there’s no time to formulate a random idea to make a joke after that distraction. He starts his “joke” as soon as the noise is made.

This was no offhand comment, this was planned.

  93. xegar Says:

I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention.

Whatever. I don’t think an apology is necessary here.
What we need is an explanation as to why Huckabee thinks this kind of humor is funny. Remember, this is a man who has lived through the assassination of liberal leader after liberal leader, all of which began with the aim of a gun.

  94. xegar Says:

I would like to see someone aim a gun at Huckabee and see how quickly he would hit the floor. - Bilbo
You are getting close to the bone here, Bilbo.
Huck had a moment of terror when that noise startled him. and like every faux-tuff republican with a shrivelled dick, he cast his reflexively cast his own fears onto his enemy. or something like that.

  95. williamf Says:

This is a bulls**t pseudo apology. The smart ass is hedging and I am certain where he’s coming from. When I saw this alleged apology, I thought the appropriate question would be “but how do you feel about it?” He’s playing to the gunsick duckhunters and rednecks in Arkansas. His base would be mighty angry if Huck turned out to be one of them liberal candy asses.

  96. Buckie Boy Says:

Uh, yes they were meant to be offensive and just saying “my bad” does not make their intent go away.

  97. DaTruth Says:

Racism is one of the most REPUBLICAN of all “virtues”.

  98. eve Says:

I don’t like Huckabee. His remark was offensive, tasteless, and crude.

But he did apologize. He did not do the non-apology, apology.

When they say “…IF my remark offended anyone…” or “…IF my remark was offensive…” that is a non-apology. Saying “if” implies that the remark might or might not be offensive.

Huckabee didn’t use the “if”. He clearly stated that his remark was offensive and he apologized.

I agree that this is a major gaffe. Particularly for someone who would like to be picked to run as VP. Pardon the wording, but he is too much of a loose cannon.

  99. LiberalVoter Says:

FYI: I notice the admins removed some offensive posts of savage_rules. I referenced the number of the post in my replies and when the removal occured, posts got renumbered. My comments were directed at savage_rules and not Wayne as it now appears. Lesson learned to not reference the number of the post but the user.

I respectfully disagree with the premise of your theory. I know plenty of people with a quick, sharp sense of humor who can react to noises or things people say with a very funny remark. Now, having said that, while I can see that Huckabee was quick-witted enough to recognize that an opportunity to make a joke presented itself, he was unprepared for such spontaneous improvisation, and his joke wasn’t a very good one. And he was making a disparaging remark about Sen Obama, and his “apology” was a hypocritical lie.

  101. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    LiberalVoter,

I recognized that comments were deleted, and I know that nothing you said was directed at me, so I took no offense. :)

If I may suggest, since TP refuses to follow our oft-repeated suggestion to replace deleted comments with things like “Offensive comment deleted by admin” or something, I suggest copying the entire “time-stamp”, as you see other posters do. It can be cumbersome, but at least it removes any doubt about to whom or what you’re referring.

  102. frantaylor Says:

This idiot is a minister. If he is still a minister after this, it just tells you how corrupt his religion is.

  103. danawonk Says:

I was appalled when I heard the remarks. How could someone somewhat intelligent say something so offensive and downright dangerous. And then think it was funny! How sick!! Then he apologizes after everyone came down on his sorry a–! I will never think of Huckabeebee the same way after this. Where I once thought of him as a somewhat decent person I know see him as some dumb southern hick!!! Reverend my —!

  104. OICUR2 Says:

This so-called “joke” by the so-called “ordained Southern Baptist minister” is absolutely appalling. It makes the dumbest of the dumbest things that Cowboy Bush has said, in the past, seem somewhat intelligent.

IF, GOD FORBID, there were to be ANY type of assassination attempt on Senator Obama, there would be such an uprising with an enormous amount of mutiny, rebellion and revolt; and at a level that that this country has not experienced in recent times!

Also, we would know where to look first… and that is at the GOP. They would be the party of “DETESTATION & HATRED” for a long time coming; especially if they keep these types of tactics up, they’ll be well on their way!

I hope the GOP finds it in their best interest to request additional support, from the Secret Service, specifically dedicated to Senator Obama. In my opinion, this comment has actually planted the thought into some, if not many, wacky souls out there and therefore cannot be downplayed! It’s NO JOKE!

The GOP is so desperate that they have become very cruel, vindictive, spiteful, nasty, pitiless, callous, harsh, vile, wicked, contemptible and downright EVIL!

The GOP, and their past tactics are SIMPLY PATHETIC!
