Huckabee makes ‘joke’ about Obama avoiding a gunman.»

huck.gifSpeaking before a National Rifle Association convention today, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee — and ardent supporter of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) campaign — was interrupted by an “unexpected offstage noise” and commented that perhaps Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) was ducking a gunman:

“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he’s getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”

Politico’s Ben Smith notes, “Joking about Obama getting shot at is probably not the fast track to veephood.”

UPDATE: CNN aired the Huckabee clip. The conservative pundit, the liberal pundit, and host Wolf Blitzer all agreed the joke was made in very poor taste. “I’m sure the Secret Service wouldn’t be happy with those jokes either,” said Blitzer. Watch it:

UpdateObama was placed under secret service protection last year -- the earliest ever for a U.S. presidential candidate -- because of racially motivated threats.

  1. StratRat Says:

The right side is filled with poor losers. Imagine what a right side site would react if Obama or Clinton would have said the same thing. The servers at Redstate would blow up from the comments. The republican brand just got more tarnished and irrellevant.

  2. JMOHR Says:

The comment was tasteless. Contrary to the opinion of Americablog, I do not believe that it was to suggest the assination of Obama. It was meant to paint him as a coward. Just another one of the standard slurs made against Democrats.

  3. Zimzone Says:

    Hyuck, hyuck, Huckabee.

I guess if it was McCan’t holding the gun I’d be scared, too.

The way he shoots his mouth off, God only knows what he’d do with a gun.

  4. Shayne Says:

Listen Huckleberry, there’s way more guns, loaded, in one project in Chicago where Obama was an activist than at your little convention. I’d like to Huck spend a day in some of the places Obama’s been

  5. goose1 Says:

    How Christian of him.

  6. wldj Says:

The republican party is imploding because of idiots like Huckabee and their rascist bull#hit. bush’s statements are far worse and i don’t hear a lot of apologies from him or the mis_Administration. I don’t expect one the huckster either.

  7. NOLIESPLEASE Says:

Why doesn’t Huckabee tell that same joke to the parents of all the kids killed at school shootings over the last two years. Idiot. The Republicans can no longer use gun rights or Religion as the torch, those excuses expiry date was November 2004.

The Conservative Party in Canada was distroyed by former PM Brian Mullruny and the voters made sure of its death. Maybe the Americans will do the same.

  8. Guido the Loving OBGYN Says:

Just further proof that public service does not attract the best people most of the time. Joking about shooting Obama is entirely innapproriate for a public servant.

  9. McWars Says:

Of course, Obama won’t return the joke because he has CLASS.

  10. RobertSeattle Says:

Any video of Former Vice Presidential Contender Huckabee’s comment?

  11. Max-1 Says:

    .

So I CAN joke about assassinations?

    .

  12. NOLIESPLEASE Says:

Oh I forgot one thing, isn’t Huckabee a Minister? Real American….Preachers with Guns. No wonder Jesus didn’t stay in his grave, He would be spinning with all the turning over he would of done if he remained.

  13. freeman Says:

Standing at an NRA meeting and joking about the assassination of a presidential candidate is inciting gun owners to violence and far from a laughing matter ! Some legal remedy must apply here and at very least Obama should force a statement like this into the limelight to reflect the differences between himself and the morality of his opponents.
Mc Caine jokes about bombing Iran , Huckabee jokes about the assassination of the likely democratic presidential nominee.
    Real charmers .

  14. RUCerious Says:

The Huckster up to his old tricks. Perhaps the sound was a bolt of thunder aimed at Huckleberry, from an angry god.
He’d better watch out who he pisses off/on…

  15. Max-1 Says:

    .

Nope, that noise was UpChuck-a-bee’s laywer finding out he’s Cheney’s hunting partner.

    .

  16. RUCerious Says:

Could it be that his white gun and bible toting audience are bitter?

  17. McWars Says:

There’s no right-wing vote to lose in Arkansas. Joke’s away..YEE-HAW! Geet out the popper — time to make some squirrel!!

  18. Namtillaku Says:

And Christians think they corner the market on morality.

  19. nigel Says:

    Republicans flee from pies

  20. freeman Says:

If I didn’t know better I would say the republicans are trying as hard as they can to put a democrat in office in November.

  21. SP Biloxi Says:

Every time he opens up his mouth, he lets out his ignorance. Heckava job, Rev. Huckabuck and the Democrats thank you.

  22. NoOneYouKnow Says:

This is the quality of people they have running for president. Pretty telling.

  23. McWars Says:

Thanks for the update TP. After Obama wins, given the regressive nature of some people in this country, the secret service may best the DoD as the largest government employer.

  24. Vincennes Says:

Not very Christian of him, unless that’s what his christianity teaches …

  25. StratRat Says:

Yeah, Huckabee is a devout Christian, but he is more of a GOP politician than anything else. That will be a discussion between he and his Savior when the time comes.

  26. Buckie Boy Says:

Ah, the old Racist Bigots doing conservative humor…not funny.

And you wouldn’t duck? Uh, Phuckaberry?

  27. Nashoba nowa Says:

Total BS from an imbecile, showing just how high his IQ really is.

  28. Exit Stage Left Says:

To think this goober was actually in the running at one point? The GOP pride must be at historic levels.

  29. Uncle Ho Says:

    Not funny.

Imagine the reich-wing outrage if Billary had said the same thing about Huckie-boy.

  30. StratRat Says:

It is very easy for the average and typical person to see what the real GOP is all about. Just a quick review of their policies (actual policies, not the BS they say they are going to do) and it is clear they hate America; and love the Almighty and the almighty dollar. If they indeed are Christians, then there is no God.

  31. curmudgeon Says:

Words like that are surely to sexually arouse everyone who is a true neocon.

Huckleberry and his Pharisees must feel nothing but sheer contempt for the life that Jesus led. After all, if someone had the power to perform miracles, why would his words while dying on the cross be, as described in Luke 23:34 be, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”?

Huckleberry and Co. must truly consider Jesus to have been a major league wuss, and if he truly had to go through the crucifixion to save the world, then surely after he returned from the dead, he would have gathered his disciples and kicked some serious rear?

There are probably millions of decent people in this country who would seriously consider joining a church, however, when they hear statements like these emanating from the mouths of such a self-proclaimed “Man of God”, the idea instead triggers a suffocating gag reflex.

Despite the existence of megachurches that advocate little else but death and destruction, there are quite likely many other churches where concepts that Jesus advocated are honored, such as caring for the destitute, the infirm, the hungry, the imprisoned, etc. (Matthew 25:31-46). And those same churches may also take Jesus’ words seriously when he described those who are particularly blessed in The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12), which included the meek, the merciful and the peacemakers.

Unfortunately, many people are so likely to be turned off to Christianity in general when they hear the words of people like Huckleberry that they might never even imagine that such a church exists, let alone trying to find one, where they might find that they actually share much in common with its parishioners.

Perhaps the Christian Reich trolls out there could explain to all of us how Huckleberry’s words convey the spirit convey by Jesus’ words in the previous two groupings of Bible verses. And while they are at it, perhaps they could also identify the Bible verses where Jesus conveyed a sense of “humor” similar to the Huckster. Or maybe they’ll tell us that Jesus was just kidding.

  32. JBaddo Says:

The Abu Ghraib photos are worth a 100+ 9/11s. Its all numbers

  33. flag burner Says:

I just wonder if those in the audience who laughed can be identified.

  34. Marie Says:

Huckleberry, the christian, should be condemned. Many of us remember when Bobby Kennedy was shot as he announced his nomination for the presidency. Many of us worry that a lunatic will attempt somehting on Obama’s life. This was an outrageous and unacceptable comment from Huckabee.
Aside from the ignorance, the arrogance and being totally, shamefully inappropriate, if the noise would have been a shot, what would he have expected Obama to do — stand up??
His comment today has me seeing red.
He is not qualified to be trash collector — my apologies to anyone who is in waste management.

  35. Bobwurst Says:

A troll who posted a comment like that would get banned. And he’s the second best choice the republicans could find in the entire country….

  36. Ms_Joanne Says:

It’s long been known that goopers have no sense of humor.

Case in point: Dennis Miller used to be funny…really funny. Everytime I hear him now, I keep asking myself, was he ever funny or has he just lost it since he became a goop supreme?

Perhaps I misunderestimated the sucking power of the goop. They don’t just suck, they suck everything out of you.

  37. Marie Says:

With a moron who plays fast and loose living in the White House, the tone is set for the nation — this is another thing Bush has done to America. He has given tacit permission for others to be as stupid and ignorant, swaggering and bullying, cowardly and arrogant as he is.

  38. Ms_Joanne Says:

OH, St. Augustine…that is fantastic news! Thanks for sharing!!

  39. Yankeluh Says:

Perhaps someone will demonstrate marksmanship at the convention by shooting the chip off Huckabee’s shoulder.

  40. Leftside Annie Says:

    Har-dee-flucking-har.

Jebus. Chuckleboob is a bigger idiot than I thought. And I thought he was a HUGE idiot.

Hmmm. This one might make KO’s Worsts tonight…

  41. freeman Says:

Nope that sound was the sound of Mike Huckabee pulling his head out of his ass .

  42. upside99 Says:

Wonder why we haven’t heard from our usual-suspect trolls on this? Maybe they all find huck’s comments right on and support his hillbilly humor.

  43. dumbstruck Says:

Huck and Dick would be great hunting partners.

  44. osage Says:

This is the kind of cluelessly inappropriate comment that has transformed the word “Republican” into an epithet. To think that there are people who believe humor can be found in a black presidential candidate being shot at, especially coming from a southern good ole boy, is beyond the limits of rational thought. Like Bush’s WMD joke and McCain’s boom, boom Iran dance, it’s clear that the Republican sense of humor can be found somewhere right of fart jokes. Only fools make fools of themselves without realizing how painfully foolish it makes them look.

  45. McWars Says:

Classic, Ms_Joanne, just classic. You continue to post, and I will continue to faithfully read.

  46. Roket Says:

Man-boys will be man-boys. Geesh. I’m ready for some grown-ups to take charge. Now please.

  47. JBaddo Says:

Hucky Bucky and Dicky Cheney gun toting dudes………everyone’s an enemy including the duck

  48. upside99 Says:

I can’t wait for Johnnie Boy to name the huckster as his running mate. The fun we will have listening to these two assKlowns will be priceless.

  49. Shayne Says:

Too bad Cheney’s lawyer didn’t know enough to duck for cover.

  50. Leftside Annie Says:

Huh. I’ll bet Huckie thought “macaca” was hilarious.

  51. Jackie Says:

I hope that isn’t an example of Christian Republican Values. If it is we have bigger problems now. When a so called Rev. suggest a gun shot was for a Presidential candidate so nut might take Huckabee up on the assignment. What would Americans say if someone did shoot Obama, it would be funny. Now I noticed the Media isn’t saying a word about Huckabee’s comment yet they were all over Rev. Wright he just told the truth and the American History we choose to forget. I hope the Republican Party clears out the trash they have in their Party.

  52. bentley1 Says:

I’m surprised Kilo hasn’t educated us on why this is all right
    tony and Lido

  53. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre Says:

So funny, I forgot to laugh…

  54. Nashoba nowa Says:

McCains Reverends ——— what a pair John Hagee, and Mike Huckabee……….. By all means continue speaking for McCain’s campaign…………….

  55. ennealogic Says:

Just think, the media pounced all over Obama for 4 days for saying “sweetie” to a reporter. How much you wanna bet Dinglebee’s seriously horrid joke burns out before one full news cycle (24 hours)?

  56. AMcG773 Says:

That was just tacky of Huckabee.

  57. DallasNE Says:

More Christian values mouthed by Mike Huckabee. Is there any wonder that young Christians are abandoning the Republican party for lack of shared values.
